Designing beautiful and functional spaces for living, working and playing at home (BPT) - Over the last year, life has been synonymous with ongoing changes, and chances are your home has had to adapt to these changes too. Your kitchen table might now be your office, the living room now serves as a classroom and your kitchen island is now a space for virtual social hours with friends. Are you longing for more functional and flexible spaces that work for your evolving needs? You’re not alone. “Spending more time at home and needing it to work in new ways has caused homeowners to rethink their spaces,” says Leigh Spicher, National Director of Design Studios for Ashton Woods. “With more of your life at home you need spaces focused on how you live with the ability to transform, as necessary.” While some people are remodeling their homes to accommodate the new normal, others are selling and taking advantage of historically low interest rates in order to build their own home to perfectly fit their needs. No matter which category you fall into, Spicher shares the top trends in home design so you can elevate your home to prioritize agility, functionality, comfort and style. Design rooms for dual purpose Gone are the days of single purpose, defined spaces like “living,” “dining” or “bed” rooms. With the need for home offices and virtual learning spaces, families need more room to complete the tasks within their homes. But imagine the functionality your home would have if creative solutions allowed one room to flex for multiple purposes, embracing the practical needs of your home today with flexibility for tomorrow. Designer tips: • Carve out space in larger-than-necessary rooms for different purposes. For instance, an open area in the owner suite or extra walk-in closet makes room for a nursery. Or the seating area in a home office may better serve as a home gym. • Clean out the hall linen closet and add a small desk with playful artwork to serve as a child’s learning space. It will be less distracting than a playroom or bedroom

and creates a space all their own. • Add a built-in or console for office organization in a dining room or clean out old and unused dishware from the china cabinet to make room for office and school supplies. Both solutions offer a beautiful focal point in the home while being utilized for more practical everyday needs.
feel warm or cool, and then ensure those layers of light all work towards the same color temperature. When you purchase lightbulbs, the packaging will include this little detail.
Usher in light in the new year Rooms are often not designed with proper lighting. Objective layers of lighting and correct temperatures of that lighting play a key role in not only how your space looks and feels, but also how it functions. A single layer of lighting often leads a room to be too dark or one dimensional, while many layers of different temperatures can make a room feel “off.”
Create a space for what’s most important Functional spaces are made for the way you live while offering opportunities for connection - and trends are following suit. Spicher says homeowners are adopting a “new traditional” style that is both comfortable and contemporary - making way for natural spaces where memories can be made. This means family rooms are designed with group gatherings in mind with furniture and flow that encourages conversation and interactions.
Designer tips: • Ensure each room has the four layers of fundamental lights as needed. Each room should have a main source of lighting like recessed can lights. Then add task lighting like a reading lamp or under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. Accent lighting such as small track lighting should be used to illuminate a focal point. And finally, add a decorative light such as a chandelier or sconce to complete the room. • First, determine if you want your room to
Designer tip: Make sure there is a room or at least a “zone” in your home that is absent of technology. Turn off and cover the TV to create more room for those games, puzzles and good conversation without distractions. Think back to that “traditional” formal living room and design spaces intended for connection and visiting with friends that are a more approachable and comfortable look for everyday living.

Refresh your home’s appeal with furniture paint MS) — Furniture, bookcases, cabinets, and doors present opportunities to add or change color throughout a home. Woodcraft offers an extensive line of furniture paint, tools and supplies necessary for successful painting projects. In addition, Woodcraft retail store associates are always ready to help customers, and extensive how-to material is a click away at woodcraft.com. Lori Harper, Woodcraft public relations manager and blogger, offers some advice about updating a kitchen: “Painting kitchen cabinets is a big job, but it can transform the look of your kitchen at a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. It may sound daunting, but breaking it down into bite-size steps can take away the fear factor.” To read her project blog, visit Woodworking Adventures on Woodcraft.com and search for “Kitchen Cabinet Conundrum.” Paint & Color Selection
Three easy-to-use and easy-to-mix paints are:
• Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint is a water-based, low-VOC, matte finish paint for indoor use that requires only cleanup before painting, except in the case of chips and scratches, and adheres to wood, metal, glass, ceramics, and plastic. • General Finishes Milk Paints are premixed water-based acrylic paints suitable for a variety of interior or exterior applications from furniture to crafts. • General Finishes Gel Stains are heavy-bodied gels formulated to flow evenly for consistent color control. Before you pick up a paint brush, consider which colors are best for the area you plan to refresh. Choices will need to complement wall color and colors of other pieces or accents in a room. Two handy color guides are the 36-page General Finishes Milk Paint Fan Deck and the Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint Color Recipes (available for download as a free PDF on Woodcraft.com). For more than just a change of color, consider creating decorative effects, such as distressing, antiquing, faux marble, or rag rolling. Choose General Finishes Pearl Effects to make it easier to create specialty finishes. Repair If furniture, cabinets and other surfaces need repair prior to painting, the Mohawk PermaFill Wood Touch-Up and Repair System is an easy answer. Just pop in a color cartridge (six color families available), power on the battery-operated dispenser, aim, fill and level this durable repair. Briwax ChaiRX is perfect to fix loose parts in chairs. Drill a small hole, inject ChaiRX, and in 12 hours the thin unique formulation will penetrate the wood cells and permanently swell the joints and bond them together. Visit https://youtube/ iWMu6OKyOUE to watch a video that demonstrates these products. For more extensive repairs, use the Kreg Jig R3 Kit to reinforce weak parts with pocket holes and avoid complete disassembly of your project. Clean and Prep Use Krud Kutter TSP Substitute to remove dirt, grease, smoke, mildew, food stains, crayon, wax, and more from surfaces to be painted so paint will adhere better. For sanding chores associated

with painting, consider the Porter-Cable Restorer Handheld Drum Sander with attachments, which is designed to remove paint and finish from wood, brick and fiberglass, as well as remove rust and polish metal. The Porter-Cable 382 5” Random Orbital Sander and the Norton 5” Random Orbital Sander are other good choices. For sanding with hand power, the Preppin’ Weapon Sanding Block Kit and Norton 41⁄2” x 51⁄2” SoftTouch Sanding Sponges are handy helpers. Application & Topcoat If spraying is your preference, HOMERIGHT Finish Max Fine Finish and HOMERIGHT Super Finish Max HVLP Sprayers are easy to use on everything from furniture to fences with oil- and water-based products such as chalk-style paint, latex paint, milk paint, enamels, primers, polyurethanes, stains, and varnishes. Large and Small Spray Shelters make painting furniture easier. For painting by hand, Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint Round Brushes, made from both natural and synthetic bristles, and Redtree Matey Synthetic Bristle Brushes work well. Give paint extra protection with Black Dog Salvage Guard Dog and Show Dog Topcoats and General Finishes Gel and High Performance Polyurethane Topcoats. To learn more about these and other products, visit your local Woodcraft store, call (800) 535-4482 or visit www.Woodcraft.com.

Start 2021 on a high note with these hacks (BPT) - While 2020 was a rollercoaster of emotions, this year doesn’t have to be. These hacks will help you navigate the new norm this year - and make sure 2021 kicks off on a stressfree note. 1) Make your home cozy Make your home extra cozy this season since everyone is still spending more time at home. Missing family members who can’t visit? Incorporate their photos into your decor to invoke family memories and to feel closer. Cheery decor can improve your entire vibe - so whether you deck the patio with string lights, buy some new cozy candles or spice up your bar cart with festive beverages, embrace the at-home life. 2) Protect your packages with in-garage delivery If you’re planning to do most of your shopping online like the majority of Americans, it’s even more important than ever to be prepared with a secure and contactless delivery solution like Key by Amazon In-Garage Delivery. Amazon recently expanded the service to millions more Prime members in more than 4,000 cities across the United States. Ensure your packages are protected against damage, theft and weather. All you need is a myQ smart garage door opener linked to Key by Amazon app to have packages delivered directly into your garage. myQ technology can be added to all leading brands of garage door openers in minutes via a myQ Smart Garage Hub. 3) Start a new family tradition Since life is slowed down and everyone is snuggled in at home, consider making the most of the situation and putting some extra thought into starting a new family tradition for special days in 2021. Try experimenting with new delicious family recipes (perhaps spark some friendly competition with a bakeoff over Zoom?), having an online trivia party for your birthday or maybe even try building an ice-skating rink or putting green on your lawn. 4) Entertaining and need extra space to spread out? Consider your garage Your garage is an extension of your home and can be a great place this year to remain socially distant. If you’re entertaining and need extra space to spread out, why not utilize your garage? The indoor/outdoor space lets in fresh air and creates additional room for hosting loved ones. Add space heaters, twinkling lights, some fun music and pour the hot cocoa!

The various ways to repurpose dressers One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Here are a few ideas to get started. • Television stand: Sand and paint or stain the dresser to match the color scheme of your living room or family room. Remove the top row of drawers from the dresser to have cubby space to house electronics, such as cable boxes or DVD players. The remaining drawers can hold movie collections, spare remote controls, gaming systems, and much more. • Serving bar: Paint the dresser in an eyecatching shade and make sure to seal-coat
it with a finish that is impervious to moisture. If time or budget allows, attach a piece of glass or tiles on top of the dresser to create a water-resistant, strong surface area. Store various serving glasses and cocktail accoutrements within the drawers. Place a few bottles of your favorite spirits and a decanter on a decorative tray. • Storage shelving: Remove the drawers from the dresser and turn it into a storage mecca by using stackable plastic containers in spaces once occupied by the drawers. Keep craft supplies, collectibles or anything else you can think of inside. • Kitchen island: Small dressers can be repurposed into kitchen islands with a few modifications. Install casters on the feet so it can be moved around when necessary. Place butcher block wood or stone on top so you’ll have a sturdy cutting or preparation surface area. Hooks hung on the side can hold frequently used kitchen utensils. • Changing table: Turn an older dresser into a changing table for a new baby. In addition, add a cushioned pad and some decorative trim to serve as a frame that keeps the pad in place. The drawers will keep wipes, diapers, onesies, and other supplies at the ready.
• Bench: Remove the top drawers from the dresser. Add a piece of plywood to make a seat. Use the removed drawer faces on the inside back of the dresser since this area will now be visible. Paint the entire piece or stain it as desired. Fashion a cushion for the seat, and the bench is ready for an entryway or wherever you have space. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

The benefits of working with an interior designer
Home is where the heart is, and it’s also where homeowners express their style. Though interior design may come naturally to some homeowners, many more can benefit from a little help defining their style and translating that style into a beautiful home. In such instances, interior designers can be the most valuable investments homeowners make in their homes. Homeowners may hear “interior designer” and immediately hear the sound of cash registers ringing in their heads. However, many interior designers offer various services, including hourly consultations, that can make them cost-effective, especially for homeowners who are still trying to define their style and decide just how they want their homes to look. That’s just one of the many benefits of working with interior design professionals. • Interior designers can save homeowners money. Much like it’s best for homeowners with no DIY experience to hire professional contractors when renovating their homes, paying an interior designer when you have little experience with design can help you

avoid potentially costly mistakes. Interior designers are skilled at transforming homeowners’ visions into finished products, and that’s a valuable skill homeowners don’t necessarily have. Trial and error when designing a home’s interior can be costly, even if you’re not knocking down any walls or swinging any hammers. For example, after renovating on their own, homeowners may find they need to replace a new couch or dining table that they realize contradicts their design scheme. Interior designers can help homeowners avoid such costly mistakes and get it right the first time.
predominantly rustic, and interior designers can help homeowners avoid such mistakes.
• Interior designers can help you coordinate your style. Each and every component of a home’s interior says something about its owner. Whether it’s their choice of lighting fixtures, furniture or even appliances, homeowners make a statement any time they choose a design component for their homes. Interior designers can help homeowners coordinate their styles so each room seamlessly transitions to the next one. An ultra-modern living room may stick out like a sore thumb in a home that’s
• Interior designers are well-connected. Interior designers often collaborate with contractors. Those professional relationships can help homeowners avoid the headaches of finding the right professionals to work with when renovating their homes. Many a homeowner has benefitted from working with interior designers. Such partnerships can help homeowners transform their residences into the home of their dreams.
• Interior designers recognize what’s trending. Interior designers tend to be up-to-date on the latest trends. That can be incredibly valuable, especially for homeowners who are anticipating putting their homes on the market in the near future. In such instances, designers can help homeowners invest in updates or renovations that will appeal to today’s buyers, increasing the likelihood that their homes will sell more quickly, and potentially for more money.

Common home accidents and how to avoid them Some of the most common and dangerous emergency situations occur at home. Precautionary measures can make homes as safe as possible, but accidents can still happen. The National Safety Council says that 25 million in-home injuries occurred in homes in 2018. Accidental death is the third-leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, the NSC says the home injury death rate increased by 150 percent between 1999 and 2018. The top five most fatal household injuries in the United States are poisoning, falls, choking or suffocation, drowning, and fires/ burns. Recognizing the threat these accidents pose can compel people to make every effort possible to prevent them from happening. • Poisoning: Poisoning can be attributed to exposure to household chemicals, but illicit drugs and alcohol use, as well as prescription drug overdoses, have become major contributors to accidental poisonings. Keeping medicine and liquor cabinets locked can prevent children and teens from accessing items that are off limits. Disposing of unused or expired prescription medication can help remove drugs from the home. Educating children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol also may help. • Falls: Falls can happen at any age but they’re most common among the very young or very old. Installing grab bars in bathrooms, improving indoor lighting and removing tripping hazards like area rugs or toys from high traffic areas can reduce the likelihood of falls. Young children should be carefully supervised and deterred from climbing. • Choking/suffocation: U.S. News & World Report says airway obstruction — which includes choking, suffocation and strangulation — claims about 1,000 lives a year. Children often put objects in their mouths and swallow them, resulting in choking. Eating too quickly and failing to chew adequately at any age can cause food to become lodged in the throat. Older adults may lose the ability to chew or swallow adequately due to cognitive disorders or other conditions. Suffocation can occur when children are put in unsafe sleeping environments. Too many blankets or toys can impede youngsters’ ability to breathe. Keeping a home clean, monitoring children and seniors while eating and learning the Heimlich maneuver can help prevent injuries. • Drowning: A young child can drown in just inches of water, but pools, bathtubs and other standing water can be of greatest concern. Install fencing with self-latching gates and supervise children at all times when they are around water.

• Burns/fires: Install plenty of working smoke alarms and hold fire drills to reduce the risk of fire-related deaths and injuries. Turning down the temperature of a home water heater to avoid scalding and exercising caution in the kitchen, where many fires originate, also is key. Never leave food unattended on the stove. Home accidents can happen, but awareness of common incidents may compel people to place a greater emphasis on prevention.

How to tackle deep-cleaning tasks around the house (BPT) - You know it must be done, but you just don’t want to. It’s been on the to-do list for far too long. You may try to ignore it, dodge it or even cover it up. It’s your mess nemesis - your least-favorite cleaning task and you dread having to tackle it. Not all cleaning is equal While some people enjoy cleaning more than others, everyone can agree that not all cleaning tasks are created equal. In fact, 88% of American adults have a least-favorite cleaning task, according to a new survey from the makers of home cleaning brand CLR (pronounced “clear”). When asked to liken their least-favorite cleaning task to a person, 33% of Americans said it’s like a scam caller. When asked to choose between activities, almost half (43%) would rather go to the dentist than handle their leastfavorite cleaning task. Cleaning during quarantine Considering the extra time people are spending at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, messes are more frequent and
can quickly become bothersome. The frequency of cleaning has increased for most Americans over the past several months, but Americans are, understandably, split on
their level of cleaning productivity during this time: 53% have tackled a cleaning task they’ve been avoiding for years during the pandemic and 42% have avoided at least one

cleaning task during the pandemic. Tips for conquering a mess nemesis Whether it’s soap scum, mildew, rust, stinks, stains or spills, it’s time to show your mess nemesis you mean business. Follow these tips to get the job done right: 1) Set a date: It’s easy to keep avoiding tasks you loathe, so set a time for when you plan to focus on cleaning and be specific. For example, at 10 a.m. Saturday you’re finally giving the boot to that lime and calcium buildup on the shower door. Put on some cleaning clothes, play some motivational music and focus on getting the job done once and for all.
The Right Mortgage for You
2) Stock ample supplies: Stock necessities, such as sponges, scrubbers and rags, before diving into any cleaning mission. Having the right supplies for the specific job makes tasks simpler. Use proper cleaning formulations for your task, such as the CLR line that has products designed to get rid of the grime in areas of the home, from the kitchen and bathroom to the patio, garage and beyond. 3) Follow directions and use safer products: Always follow the directions on any product to ensure you get the results you want without making the mess worse or damaging the items. Use products that clean effectively without unnecessary use of harsh chemicals. Look for products approved by the EPA Safer Choice Program, meaning they’re recognized as a safer alternative to traditional cleaning options that rely on the use of harsh chemicals to be effective, such as bleach. 4) Rally the troops: Whether it’s a big mess that requires multiple sets of hands or a tough mess that requires a few people strategizing, help can make a big difference. Even if you need to focus on the mess nemesis while other people handle regular household chores, this can keep things moving forward thanks to teamwork. Get your partner, spouse, kids or roommates in on the action.
