Zazzo’s Pizza & Catering A neighborhood favorite Story and Photos by Gregg Pill When Zazzo’s chose its current Westmont location to open a second outpost, comments ranged from “Oh, really” to “I wish them luck” to the more outrageous “I think it’s jinxed.” Not only has Zazzo’s Pizza & Catering defied the odds and successfully conquered the second location expansion syndrome, it has flourished in a location that previously was home to at least five restaurants over the past 20 years. Their recipe for success – start with a successful big brother located in Darien and a pizza lineage that includes grandparents from the legendary Vito & Nick’s on South Pulaski. Create a family friendly atmosphere and loyal following. Finally, add in reasonable pricing and generous portions creating good value. All of this happens under the ever present and watchful eye of owner Dominic Barraco. Open for lunch and dinner seven days per week starting at 10 a.m. to catch the early birds, Zazzo’s also offers takeout, delivery, catering, banquet space in Westmont, patio dining, reservations, lunch buffet & specials and pizza options that will keep you satisfied whatever your preference!
There’s also a lunchtime buffet available Monday thru Friday. Winner of the Reader’s Choice Award for Best Italian food, the pasta section of Zazzo’s menu has all your Italian favorites. Lasagna arrives blanketed with a mantel of molten cheese hiding multiple sheets of pasta. Chicken Parmesan is a large breast and sided with pasta while the Spaghetti in a served with a thick meaty Bolognese sauce. Cheese Ravioli are available either as standard issue with a nice red sauce, or as Zazzo Ravioli topped with a spinach cream sauce. Tomato & Basil pasta sautés penne pasta with tomatoes, basil, garlic and olive oil. When you combine great value and great flavor, the result is a truly memorable dish. Zazzo’s Sausage & Pepper Platter is the home run. Three large links of grilled Italian sausage arrive - the charcoal aroma of grilling
hit the table as the plate was served with a nice flavor of fennel and other spices. The bright green of the al dente green peppers paints a contrasting hue adding to the picture. Sided with penne pasta with light sauce and parsley along with a cup of marinara sprinkled with parmesan, this platter is both dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. So whether you try Zazzo’s at the Taste of Westmont, relax on their patio, cater a party, buddy up inside with family and friends, you are sure to see why Zazzo’s has been a Westmont Reader’s Choice and succeeded where others have not. – Gregg Pill
Quell your craving with Zazzo’s thin crust pizza. With a near perfect topping ratio, crispy crust and a sauce that is neither to sweet nor to bland, thin crust put Zazzo’s on the map and helped it garner this year’s Reader’s Choice Award for Best Pizza. Several specialty pizzas are also available or create your own favorite from the long list of toppings and the four available sizes. Deep Dish, Sicilian and Stuffed also are available as well as a Gluten Free pizza. Zazzo’s also has slices available to thoroughly cover any pizza cravings! Lunches at Zazzo’s get special treatment with a full line-up of Lunchtime Specials for $6.90. Add a drink for a buck or the same price for fries or onion rings. Choices range from Chicken Parmesian to Burgers to Italian Beefs to Wraps and lots more.

Ruta Restaurant A taste of Europe
Ruta Café & Restaurant serves traditional Lithuanian fare. The red beet salad is a solid choice to start your meal. Herring, a Lithuanian staple, is served in generous portions with garnishes, including roasted potatoes, beet salad, pickled onions, tomatoes, dill and scallions. Hearty Eastern-European style soups include the cold beet soup, and a rotating selection of daily soups. The dense, dark seedless rye compliments the soup perfectly. Chicken and pork are menu staples and available in many combinations. Kabob or cutlet, sauced, breaded or both – there is an option for most diners. Potatoes are also featured prominently. The cepelinai, or zeppelin dumplings, combine grated and riced potatoes to form a smooth puree. Hand flattened and filled with Photos by pork mixture, they are rounded into mini football shapes Bill Ackerman (zeppelins), then boiled. Topped with warm bacon and onion, this dish is found at the center of most Lithuanian tables. Potato pancakes arrive sizzling hot, the outside crust golden, the inside, creamy smooth. Desserts are beautifully presented often with fruit, sauce and a powdered sugar garnish. Dishes are reasonably priced and often provide the next day’s meal as well. Inside, Ruta is bright and cheery. Tables are decorated with fresh-cut flowers, and easily joined to create formal dining for large parties. Stop in for lunch, dinner, coffee and dessert, or carryout. Johnny’s Blitz Great games and great food Gaming has been taken to a different level at Johnny’s with its private game room featuring five machines and Chicago-themed décor offering players an environment that’s beyond compare. “Every bar has machines exposed, but what distinguishes us from those other guys is our private setting,” owner John Dasoqi said. “And you can enjoy one of our many signature cocktails or drinks while you play”. And there are certainly many great drink and food choices at Johnny’s. Great craft beers, featuring local breweries and favorites from around the country, are always available. Amazingly, as creative as some of the names of the sandwiches maybe, they taste even better, including the “Moo, Moo, I love you,” burger and “The Jay Cutlet” chicken sandwich which reminds Bears fans that he may have let you down, but Johnny’s 8-oz. chicken breast will make you feel like a SuperBowl champion. There are also salads, lots of appetizers –including Johnny’s amazing wings – as well as the vegetarian option, The Almost Impossible Burger, which you wouldn’t know was meatless, if you didn’t read it here or on the menu first. Now that you know you can quench your thirst, fill your belly and scratch your gambling itch at Johnny’s, what’s left? How about live entertainment? Johnny’s features a wide variety of live music, concentrating on Blues and open mic nights several nights a week that provides Westmont with its own Chicago-like music venue without the drive into the city. Check out our Events tab on our Facebook page for a complete list of scheduled entertainment. “We have a lot of craft beers that are always rotating, and with our massive doors, allowing for open air dining, we can bring the outside in,“ Dasoqi said. It’s a Chicago feel, always clean and always inviting. “

Maura’s Mediterraneam
Taste the heart and soul of the region Set in the heart of downtown Westmont, Maura’s Mediterranean Cuisine has established a loyal following. As the menu and awning proclaims, “Falafel – Hummus – Shawarma – Kabob” is the heart and soul of Maura’s. It’s also the heart and soul of Mediterranean cuisine worldwide, and Maura’s is a fine representation. Falafel, a Mediterranean staple, is a family favorite. Chickpeas, parsley, garlic, onions and spices are shaped into orbs and then deep fried. Served with tahini sauce for dipping, falafel also is available as a sandwich wrapped in pita bread and layered with tomato, pickle, cucumber, parsley, mint leaves and hummus. Maura’s baba ghanoush is available in two equally delicious versions, served with addictively seasoned pita chips – prepped for maximum dipping – or soft pita bread. Fatoush is a bite-sized chop of ice cold lettuce, topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions and Maura’s own salad dressing. Toasted pita chips add a nice crunch as a substitute for croutons. Tabbouleh offers parsley, tomatoes, onions and cracked wheat are tossed with olive oil, lemon and seasonings.
Photos by Gregg Pill
Maura’s sandwich selection is heavily influenced by shawarma. Seasoned and grilled meats, similar to a gyro, are sliced thin and served in a pita wrap. Choose from chicken or a lamb and beef combination. Add in pickles, tomatoes and a sauce. If you are really hungry or in the mood for sharing, Maura’s mixed grill is a perfect choice. The menu version includes a chicken tawook kabob, a shish kabob and a kofta kabob on a massive platter with rice and a few grilled veggies. The chicken kabob is marinated, seasoned and grilled, while the shish kabob is beautifully seasoned cubes of lamb.

The Fremont Bar & Grill For those who like great food
Great food, cozy-family friendly atmosphere, great service, cold beer, drinks, and cool games. To top it, plenty of TVs and two big screens for all those sporting and entertainment events. That’s what on tap at the Fremont Bar and Grill. And those burgers. Try any of the Fremont’s creative burger options made from three premium cuts of beef and all ½ -pound patties. For those bacon lovers, prepare for The Fremont Bar & Grill newest menu item, the new 50/50 Bacon Burger. That is 50 percent bacon and 50 percent ground beef in the ½ pound patty. There is something to say about that marinade, an original recipe created by the owners. It is used in many entrees including the popular pulled pork sandwich and the Cuban sandwich which prior to cooking, the premium cuts are marinated for days giving the cuts a tender, distinct flavor. The Fremont sauce is another original recipe. This mayonnaise-based sauce offers a flavorful kick to a variety of delicious menu items and definitely popular with the My Way Sandwich and Turkey Ham Club. It also makes a fantastic dipping sauce for fries. Dinner and lunch, The Fremont Bar & Grill offers an array of options. On the lighter side, popular entrees include the grilled salmon over a bed of seasoned orzo and the Two-Day Marinated Chicken Breast which marinates for a couple days in the Fremont’s original famed marinade. Chicken entrees are always fresh, never frozen. Along with that, add an ice-cold beer or drink from the bar. There is always a menu item on special every day at The Fremont Bar & Grill. Visit the Fremont on Sunday-Funday when all beverage options are half price. Also, inquire about group events and catering.

Sushi House
Beautiful food and taste unrivaled
Located just down the road from the Oak Brook Shopping Center, it’s the perfect respite after a long day of shopping, a stop as part of a beautiful date night, or just for fun. Walsh’s Bar & Grill A sandwich like no other By GREGG PILL - editorial@mysuburbanlife.com I visit area restaurants several times before completing an article, looking for ambiance, service, self-correcting flaws, history and, most of all, food quality. Walsh’s Bar & Grill offers a unique combination of all those things. Built more than 100 years ago in the midst of farmland, it was a short walk from the fledgling railroad line. The rail stop, which originally opened for the shipment of bricks into Chicago after the devastating Great Chicago Fire, ushered in the Whiskey Hill era, with bars and brothels dotting the area. Walsh’s was both – with separate quarters for each of the overlapping businesses. Home to a mob hit in the 1930s, the building has stories as colorful as the regulars who call Walsh’s home. Owners Tim and Julianne Walsh took over George’s Bar in 1998, renamed it Walsh’s and are now entering their 21st year of serving the community. Open seven days a week, Walsh’s offers a full selection of adult beverages along with video gaming. Food is served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with cold sandwiches and pizza available during all hours. The signature sandwich at Walsh’s is the Hot Pocket. Start with a flour tortilla, then choose from more than a dozen fillings, as well as a half dozen sauces and condiments. The rectangular wrap is placed on the flattop, weighted down and grilled until golden brown. The unique sandwich benefits from customization. Patrons mix and match sauces [two are included] for the inside and for dipping. If these walls could talk, the stories could go on forever. Take a close look amid the memorabilia and you’ll find a few gems. And encourage Tim to share a few stories over a bowl of White Chicken Chili, so that in another 100 years, any walls that talk might mention you.

Tasty Treat Scooping up more than ice cream While most businesses owners say they cater to their customers, that saying may be especially true at Westmont’s Tasty Treat. Since Tina Kasson purchased the building that houses Tasty Treat — she operated a tavern at the site before turning it into an ice cream shop in 1999 — it’s been much more than just a typical ice cream joint. Instead, she said it’s a hangout that attracts people from across the Chicago area. “It’s all word of mouth,” she said. “One person tells someone, then they tell someone. Now we get people who come here all the way from Indiana just to get ice cream.” On weekends, families are often lined up waiting to get inside. The ice cream costs about $2.20 per scoop and they only serve Wilmette-based Homer’s Ice Cream, which Kasson said is the best, all-natural ice cream available. She said buses of people also come in for the ice cream, some as far away as Franklin Park. Since Kasson also owns the building next door that houses L&F Pizza, people sometimes tailgate in the parking lot after events, football games, school plays and other activities. The shop is usually open until 11 p.m., and sometimes even later. “One time, we closed up and went to Jewel to shop before they closed at midnight,” Kasson said. “We came back here to drop off stuff and there were people waiting outside, asking us if we could open and have some ice cream, so we did. “It’s things like that that set us apart from other places,” she said. “And I think our customers see that.” -Dave Heitz

J. Fleming’s Absolutely Delicious A melting pot of flavors At J. Fleming’s Absolutely Delicious, the diversity of the menu and specials are all lovingly crafted by Executive Chef John Fleming to reflect the American melting pot of different cultures and tastes. Appetizers include crab cakes dressed with celery root slaw and a red pepper remoulade, as well as coconut shrimp with a Napa cabbage slaw and plum chili sauce. The baked French onion soup is always fulfilling. Caramelized onions combined with hearty beef stock, form the perfect base for the rich mantel of cheese and the crisp garlic crostini. Sandwiches include the selection that put them on the map – the Cuban. Thin-sliced roast pork pairs with spicy capicola and is topped with Swiss, Mojo sauce, tomatoes, onions and a pickle slice before being griddled on sturdy Tuscan style bread. Dinner options are numerous, spanning the sea of cultures that is America. Campanelli Romesco features bell shaped pasta with a ruffled edge, so as to hold the tomato and Romano cream sauce. Grilled pork chops are prepared bone-in for flavor, with a light lingonberry glaze and spätzle, pan browned with fresh herbs and nutmeg. Grilled Squash Roulade features zucchini and yellow squash slices topped with four cheeses, pine nuts and fresh basil, served with sautéed spinach, grilled portabellas, and fresh marinara sauce. Desserts include a tart of sweet, dark cherries wrapped in piecrust, baked to a flakey golden brown and plated with ice cream. Bread pudding always is available and several versions of tiramisu work their way onto the specials list. Open for lunch and dinner, and an extensive weekend brunch. Enjoy live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.
Chef John Fleming has over 30 years experience in the restaurant business. He believes America is a melting pot of many different cultures …. and he has sculpted J. Fleming’s Absolutely Delicious with an American theme. Absolutely Delicious features a comfortable indoor setting, private room available, and a comfortable outside patio when weather permits.

DJ’s Sports Bar & Grill Keeping The Neighborhood Bar Tradition Alive DJ’s Sports Bar and Grill has been a neighborhood fixture for more than 25 years. As DJ’s has won the Westmont Reader’s Choice award for Best Burger 4 years in a row, expectations run high. Burgers are half pound, lightly seasoned, char grilled on a toasted brioche, or gluten-free bun. With your choice of cheese and a thick tomato slice, it’s worth returning for. So is the Deep Fried Hotdog, chosen as the best in the area this year, as well. Begin with made-to-order tortilla chips, hot, crispy, and perfect for dipping in cheese sauce or salsa. Or, go all in with the nachos. A mountain of fresh-made chips topped with nacho cheese sauce, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, salsa and sour cream. Finish it with chili, grilled chicken breast or steak. Speaking of steak, The New York Strip steak sandwich is bedded on a lightly toasted roll with a touch of garlic butter, and topped with melted Swiss, grilled onions and sautéed mushrooms. Sides are often an afterthought, but not so at DJ’s. Fresh-cut fries, fresh- cut chips, Cole slaw or onion rings all are winners. DJ’s also was honored by the community as the best sports bar and best video gaming experience in the area, speaking to the experience, as well as the food. The unique interior stems from the building’s history as a 1917 family home at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Blackhawk Drive. Each owner converted a bit more home into a bit more bar, and 100 years later, it’s a community favorite for food, friends, and a great game. Catch the Blackhawks or your favorite team and enjoy an evening with friends, at DJ’s.

Del Carmen
Traditional Mexican and more Traditional Mexican dishes may be the norm, but it’s the specialties – and the smiles - that keep people coming back to Del Carmen Restaurant, now with a carry-out, delivery and catering location, in Westmont. For owners Carmen and Hugo Blanco, fresh, cooked-toorder cuisine that features the best quality ingredients is just the start. Growing up, Hugo dreamed of owning a restaurant and was inspired by his family’s recipes. Executive Chef Pedro Hernandez, a native of Pueblo, Mexico, utilizes his extensive experience creating delicious Mexican and Southwestern dishes from family recipes to build a delectable offering. Freshly prepared classics such as tacos, burritos, tortas, and tostadas line the menu, but some of the specialty items are certainly worth exploring, too. Featured dishes such as the Camarones al Ajillo – shrimp sautéed with garlic and mild guajillo peppers are sure to please, while the Tres Amigos – a New York Strip steak, grilled chicken breast and shrimp served with rice, beans and tortillas is bound to fill any appetite.
