HOW ARE WE DOING?
We want to hear from you. Email us your thoughts at feedback@shawmedia.com.
Morrison Lions fulfilled two service projects honoring Earth Day on two consecutive Saturdays in April.
On April 13, several members cleaned up trash along a one-mile stretch of Route 30 east of Morrison and on April 20, the Morrison Lions provided a community recycling event at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds. Lions members, along with local partners, provided the community with fast and efficient service during the three-hour event. Both service projects have been completed for many years by the club as we fulfill our motto – We Serve.
Some statistics of interest regarding the successful community recycling event are that the Morrison High School FFA Chapter stayed busy as they sorted 8,354 pounds of metal and electronics. There were a large variety of items received, ranging from large appliances to small household items. Boy Scout/Cub Scout Troop 96 collected 340 pounds of aluminum cans, which was their second-highest total pounds collected during the past six recycling events.
From the more than 200 cars passing through, the Lions Club collected 167 pairs of glasses, 32 cellphones, 165 small ink cartridges, four hearing aids, onehalf pound of keys and 50 pairs of tennis shoes. These items are taken to the Lions of Illinois Foundation office located in DeKalb.
Paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines and soft-covered books also were collected, filling a trailer to the brim. The paper shredding truck was kept busy throughout the morning. Morrison Police also collected ammunition and unused medication and Lions members collected a number of car batteries.
The club is appreciative of the generous donations received at this event from community members who dropped off items to recycle. Because of this generosity, the Lions will be able to donate a portion of the money received to Boy Scout Troop 96, MHS Key Club and the MHS
Several youth volunteers were able to count their hours toward the Sauk Valley Community College Impact program. A donation also will be given to the Whiteside County Fair Board for use of the facility and to the First Presbyterian Church for their volunteers. Any funds remaining will go toward future Lions community projects.
In addition, our thanks to all the event volunteers and community members who donated.
We would like to thank our generous community partners and sponsors including the city of Morrison staff, TBK Bank, Farmers National Bank, 1st Gateway Credit Union, Resthave Home and Rehabilitation, Republic Services, Kunes Auto Group of Morrison, CarQuest,
American Legion, Yarbrough Appliances and Ron Shank. We also would like to thank Joe Robbins, Doug Kuehl and Brandon Peppers for the donated use of trailers and a dump truck.
Without the cooperation and support of the community and these great partners, we could not have held a successful Recycle Day event.
Mark your calendars for next year’s recycling event, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the fairgrounds.
Morrison Lions meet at noon on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Happy Joe’s, 109 W. Main St. in Morrison. Anyone interested in learning more about the Lions and our motto, WE SERVE, can check our website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/morrisonil/ contact.php.
Waves being monitored in Mississippi River near Fulton
The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will place monitoring equipment this week at several locations in Pool 13 of the Upper Mississippi River between Bulger’s Hollow Recreation Area and Lock and Dam 13 in Clinton.
The equipment will be placed below the water’s surface to monitor waves and water clarity from late May through mid-September, according to a news release.
Orange buoys will mark locations
where monitoring instruments have been placed. The equipment is sensitive, and the public is asked to avoid these locations so as not to disturb the research project.
Hunting, fishing and recreational activities are not restricted near monitoring locations, but the public should not tamper with or disturb monitoring equipment and should be careful navigating around buoys.
Public assistance to report unexpected events, damaged property or suspicious activity around the monitoring equip -
ment is appreciated. Local, state and federal officials have been informed about the placement of this equipment. Scientists will use the data collected in Pool 13 to better understand how waves affect water clarity and the river’s ecosystem, including native freshwater mussels and aquatic plants such as wild celery. The results can inform rehabilitation efforts in Pool 13 and elsewhere on the Mississippi River, according to the release. For information, contact Kristen Bouska, USGS research ecologist, at 608-781-6344 or kbouska@usgs.gov.
Fire department breakfast serves more than 1,200
By ANAKIN WESTON For Shaw Local News NetworkThe Morrison Fire Department hosted its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser May 19 at the station, where firefighters served more than 1,000 people.
The department’s firetrucks were parked in a nearby parking lot so the department could host crowds of hungry community members eager to donate to the cause. The goal for the day’s event was to serve one thousand people. Joe Bielema, a firefighter with more than 40 years of service to the department, said, “If you hear the fire alarm whistle, we made a thousand.”
The department’s Facebook page May 20 said 1,208 people had been served.
The annual pancake fundraiser is a tradition that dates to 1999. The department at that time needed to borrow thermal-gas griddles from Albany and Fulton. As time went on, the fundraiser grew in popularity. The department eventually needed to invest in griddles of its own and even made a pancake griddle within the station.
The fundraiser now is run by a committee of four that rotates every year. Fundraisers such as the pancake breakfast and the pork chop drive-
thru contribute to paying for the station’s equipment needs. Using the funds from last year’s breakfast, the department was able to buy new Scott
Air-Paks to replace outdated ones. The department received a Compeer financial grant to cover the majority of costs for a new battery-operated fan.
Tickets dismissed in 2 fatal Whiteside County crashes
By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.comMORRISON – Charges filed in two fatal Whiteside County crashes have been dismissed after the Whiteside County State’s Attorney’s Office made motions saying more investigation is needed in each case.
A charge of improper passing within 100 feet of an intersection filed against Gustavo Cervantes, 39, of Crest Hill, in connection with an April 3 fatal crash, was dismissed May 8, according to court records. Cervantes was charged in the
crash that killed Matthew Dean Miller, 41, of Rock Falls. Miller was driving a tractor north on state Route 40 about 9:20 a.m. and preparing to turn west onto Route 172/Star Road when a northbound semitractor-trailer, driven by Cervantes, entered the southbound lane to overtake the tractor. The two vehicles collided at the intersection and went off the northwest side of the road, Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said.
Cervantes was to appear May 13 in Whiteside County traffic court in Sterling, but the charge was dismissed five days earlier.
That dismissal came two weeks after a charge of failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash was dismissed against a semitractor-trailer driver involved in a March collision near Tampico that claimed the lives of three teenagers.
Korey L. Hostetler of Deer Grove was cited on that charge April 1 in connection with the March 28 crash on Luther Road near Tampico. According to Booker, Keyan L. Crow, 17, was driving his 2003 Ford pickup north about 1 p.m. on Luther Road just outside of Tampico when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was
struck by Hostetler, who was traveling east on Hahnaman Road. Crow’s passengers, Jayden Hanson and Channing Swertfeger, both 14, and Douglas “DJ” Dorathy, 16, died at the scene. Crow was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Crow, also of Deer Grove, was cited April 2 for failure to stop and violating his graduated license restrictions. Those charges were dismissed April 10.
Hostetler was to make his initial court appearance April 25. The charge filed against him was dismissed April 22.

Hopson was released with a notice to appear on a future date.

More information on the leaky gut phenomenon is discussed YOUR HEALTH
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D.Part two begins with a summary of what we’ve talked about so far. A number of factors outside the gut, such as food, toxins, stress, drugs, infections or other compromises in the body, lead to inflammation in the gut. This calls attention to further food intolerance, which then leads to problems with the immune system, resulting in the autoimmune phenomena. While some people may have a genetic setup, anyone can develop this condition due to the factors above.
Doctors known as Functional Medicine Doctors may order different tests to evaluate this condition. Most other doctors will end up treating symptoms or presume you have leaky gut and make recommendations accordingly.
Ways you can “eat dirt,” so to speak, are to go for a walk outside, preferably barefoot. Taking a pet who gets in the soil also is a way to pick up harmful organisms that may rub off on us as we clean them. Pregnant women who crave dirt may benefit from eating organic bentonite clay twice a day with a teaspoonful in a glass of water. Eating probiotic rich foods along with prebiotic measures, such as sauerkraut, kiefer and yogurt, can be quite helpful. Raw
honey and bee pollen may be beneficial, although the pure type is superior to anything processed. Swimming in the ocean is another way to “eat dirt.”
A supplement known as shilajit may be helpful and raw milk from a local source may have benefits. Unfortunately, these are removed in the pasteurization process. Goat and sheep milk that is unprocessed, raw and fermented may be much better for an individual. Gluten and other grains can be particularly challenging to leaky gut. A healthy substitute for regular flour is coconut flour, and, to a degree, almond flour.
There are many ways to sabotage the bacteria in your gut, including toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gym and even children’s chewable vitamins. Most fitness waters, soft drinks and flavored beverages contain toxins, as do salad dressings, many yogurts, breakfast cereals and snack foods. Stevia, on the other hand, is a safe substitute, especially the type made by Green Leaf.
It may be helpful to keep in mind that there is a constant assault on the environment by toxins, whether in the air or pesticides in soil and everyday chemicals around the house. This includes products such as sodium lauryl sulfate, found in shampoos, cosmetics and tooth-
paste. Parabens are found in shampoos, shaving gels and makeup. Phthalates are chemicals in hairsprays and fragrances that lengthen the shelf life but cause problems to the gut. Volatile organic compounds or petroleum-based products, which are toxic to the nervous system, are found in many toiletry products. DAEA is a foaming type of agent in many shampoos and toothpaste, which disrupts hormones. Chlorine, which is used in many swimming pools and water supplies, may cause issues as well. Unfortunately, this increases antibiotic resistance, and the list could go on.
After a person has removed as many toxins as they can, it is time to restore measures. This includes the items mentioned above such as walking barefoot outside, playing with the dog, consuming a tablespoon of local raw honey, consuming two servings of fermented foods daily, eating medicinal mushrooms and foods such as green algae. Shopping at the local farmers market for organic fresh produce also is a positive measure. Bone broth can be a basic and important way of restoring the proper bacteria balance. Coconut products, including coconut flour, coconut milk and coconut butter may be helpful. Supplements with probiotics may be beneficial while keep-
ing in mind that the closer you are to nature, the better. Sprouted seeds and high-fiber foods, including Chia seeds, flax seeds and hemp seeds, are good additions to the diet.
Other important supplements include magnesium and certain types of tea may be beneficial. Digestive enzymes, such as protease, lipase and lactase, may be helpful for many people. The supplement L-glutamine has anti-inflammatory properties as well. Licorice root and collagen, which is found in bone broth, can be helpful.
More specific types of nutrition and replacement plans may be found in the book “Eat Dirt” by Dr. Axe, which gives five different types of gut conditions. The first is candida gut, which is heavily affected by sugar, cow’s milk, dairy, bananas and wheat bread. Stress gut comes from the impact and intersection of stress with excess sugar and carbohydrates. Immune gut is triggered by antibiotics and other medications along with grief and depression. Gastric gut comes from chronic poor digestion and toxic acids when a diet high in bad fats and toxins overworks the liver system, including the gallbladder. The details of eating for that particular type of gut are found in his excellent research.
Morrison True Value to celebrate 50 years with open house
By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.comMORRISON – A little more than 50 years ago, Don Jevne was in his first year as a music teacher in Scales Mound.
Deciding the profession was not for him, Don joined his father, James, in his brand-new venture of owning and operating a hardware store in Morrison.
As they say, the rest is history – one that has lasted 50 years and will be celebrated with an open house at Morrison True Value on June 6.
It all began in the early 1970s when James and his wife, Emily, were residing in Villa Park, a suburb of Chicago. James had worked for retailer Spiegel for years. When he retired at the age of 55, he began looking for his next line of work.
“He retired and decided he wanted a hardware store, so he started looking around Illinois for a hardware store and lo and behold, Morrison, Illinois,” Don’s wife, Jackie, said during an interview with Shaw Local.
James and Emily bought the store on June 11, 1974, from previous owner Morry Myers at a time when there were other hardware stores and two lumber stores in town, Don said.
Don, who had graduated with a music teaching degree from Southern Illinois University and wanted to be a junior high band teacher, instead was teaching vocal music and band to all grade levels in Scales Mound and didn’t want to continue teaching.
James asked Don to come to Morrison and
help him set up the store, Jackie said.
“They came into here with a music degree and an accountant and said, ‘Ahhh, let’s do hardware. It can’t be hard,’ ” Jackie said.
Don, at the age of 23, served as the merchandiser and buyer, figuring out whatever was needed to make the business successful. Don and his dad continued working together for 15 years until James died in 1989.
Today, Don continues to run Morrison True Value, which he moved from Main Street in 2012 and into the former Spahn and Rose/Blackhawk Lumber building at 104 S. Genesee St.
Don has seen a lot of changes in the hardware business over the years. The store on Main Street, which in 1979 expanded into the building to the west, had a basement full of toys for sale and sold lawnmowers, lawn furniture, housewares and guns alongside paint and traditional hardware items. The Jevnes would go to market to select the merchandise they would sell in the store.
The move in 2012 to the former lumber business building put the store in a modernized building that is more accessible for shoppers.
Jackie, who ran two clothing stores in downtown Morrison, said the community has been supportive of the business, pointing out her husband has run the only remaining Morrison hardware store for several years.
The open house will be Thursday, June 6, with cake and refreshments, games, gift certificates, giveaways and a Morrison Chamber of Commerce ceremony at noon.

Morrison takes fourth at 1A state track meet
SHAW
NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
CHARLESTON – Morrison had a day to remember at the Class 1A boys state track and field finals, finishing fourth Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.
The foursome of Camden Pruis, Levi Milder, Zach Milder and Brady Anderson zoomed to a first-place time of 42.42 seconds to win the 1A 4x100 relay. The same four doubled their first-place medal count by hitting the tape in a time of 1:28.08 to capture first in the 4x200.
Pruis said he was the most shocked by his performance, mostly because Winnebago star sprinter Supreme Muhammad was in the relay. Muhammad won the 100 dash in a scorching time of 10.72.
“We were pretty scared how Supreme ran the 100s,” Pruis said of the 4x100 relay win. “This was my first time running track, so this was a special day. I didn’t go out for the first three weeks, but my coach gave me a hard time, so here I am.”
Levi Milder said he knew he had to push it during his 4x100 leg.
“I saw it was going to be a close race and I had to really push to make it hap-
pen,” he said.
Zach Milder had a showing for the ages during his leg, helping Morrison seize control.
“I had to really make up some ground and run really hard,” Zach Milder said. “I knew I had it in me to do well. It felt pretty good to set up Brady.”
Anderson, who said he was disappointed in his fifth-place medal in the 100 individual dash in a time of 10.84, bounced back with a sizzling finish to lead Morrison to the first of three relay state titles.
“I knew (Muhammad) was fast because we ran against him a couple of times this year,” Anderson said. “I knew it was close, so I had to go. I could hear the announcer during the race. This feels good to win this relay.”
The foursome of Zach Milder, Pruis, Chase Newman, and Anderson capped off the day with a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 3:21.89.
Levi Milder finished sixth in the 200 in 22.38.
Riverdale’s Braeden Bode took eighth in the 3,200 in 9:48.57.
Erie-Prophetstown’s Aidan Jepson finished 14th in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet, 113/4 inches.

USDA is now accepting applications for funds to help cover OCCSP costs
SPRINGFIELD – Through the Organic Certification Cost Share Program, USDA’s Farm Service Agency will cover up to 75% of organic certification costs at a maximum of $750 per certification category. FSA is now accepting applications and organic producers and handlers should apply for OCCSP by the Oct. 31 deadline for eligible expenses incurred from Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024. FSA will issue payments as applications are received and approved.
“Costs associated with obtaining organic certification can be a barrier for Illinois producers wanting to get certified,” said Scott Halpin, FSA state executive director in Illinois.
“Through OCCSP assistance, FSA helps Illinois organic producers obtain certification and leverage related benefits like premium prices for commodities and access to broader markets and additional technical assistance.”
OCCSP was part of a broader organic announcement made by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on May 15, which also included the Organic Market Development Grant program and Organic Transition Initiative.
OCCSP provides cost-share assistance to producers and handlers of organic agricultural commodities for expenses incurred obtaining or maintaining organic certification under USDA’s National Organic Program. Eligible OCCSP applicants include any certified organic producers or handlers who have paid organic certification fees to a USDA-accredited certifying agent.
Cost share assistance covers expenses including a pplication fees, inspection costs, fees related to equiv-

SVRC welcomes Alleluia Quartet to outdoor worship June 2
Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road in Fulton, welcomes Alleluia Quartet to the outdoor stage at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Come and join us for an evening of praise and worship. The quartet has been blessed to share this music in many different settings all over northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio. They share a message of hope, grace and love wherever they go.
A freewill offering will be taken. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors.
