THINGS TO DO

Discover the charm of Woodstock, a quintessential small town where arts, culture, and community come together in perfect harmony. From lively festivals and vibrant nightlife to unique shopping and dining experiences, there’s something for everyone. Stroll through the historic Woodstock Square, where every corner tells a story, or catch a world-class performance at the iconic Opera House. Whether you’re planning a visit, starting a business, or looking for a place to call home, Woodstock welcomes you.

STROLL THE HISTORIC WOODSTOCK SQUARE

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, two historic structures dominate the Woodstock Square — the Woodstock Opera House and the Old Courthouse Center. The Park in the Square is home to year-round festivals, concerts, and events, making it the heart of the community, surrounded by shopping, dining and entertainment. Visit realwoodstock.com to plan your trip.

WOODSTOCK OPERA HOUSE

121 W. Van Buren St. (South side of Square) (815) 338-5300 | www.woodstockoperahouse.com

Majestically positioned on the Woodstock Square for more than a century, stands the historic Woodstock Opera House. Built in 1889 and lovingly restored by the community in 1976 and 2024, this grand intimate theater serves as an active performing arts and cultural center. Located in the heart of McHenry County, the Opera House welcomes a diverse audience from both near and far and has been a fertile training ground for numerous luminaries and artists including Orson Welles, Paul Newman, Tom Bosley, Louis Nettleton, Shelly Berman, and Geraldine Page. Featuring historic

furnishings, stained glass windows, tin ceilings, original woodwork, and hand drawn stencil ornamentations, the Opera House is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the Midwest and one of the most recognized historic theaters in Illinois. Today it is home to four resident companies the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Theatre 121, the Judith Svalander Dance Theatre and Off Square Music. Equipped with all the amenities of any modern theater while surrounded by historical elegance, the Opera House is available for rent as the backdrop for your next private party, celebration or corporate event.

Operated by the City of Woodstock and serving as the cultural heart for the community, the Opera House coordinates and supports the annual city band concerts, movies in the park, Groundhog Day event, the Lighting of the Square and Memorial Day services at the Park on the Square. The adjacent Stage Left Café

venue serves as a secondary performance space for the historic theater and hosts a variety of local and regional artists and musicians on a weekly basis and can also be rented for meetings, special events, and private parties. The Opera House’s Community Room hosts receptions, special events and the annual Christmas Tree Walk during the holidays. Make sure your next visit to Woodstock includes this remarkable venue.

OLD COURTHOUSE CENTER

101 N. Johnson St., Woodstock oldcourthousecenter.com

Woodstock serves as the seat of government for McHenry County, and its Historic Square is home to two iconic landmarks: the Old McHenry County Courthouse, built in 1857, and the Sheriff’s House and Jail, added in 1887. These nationally significant buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are owned by the City of

Woodstock and stand as proud symbols of the city’s rich history. The Old Courthouse, designed by Chicago’s renowned architect John Mills Van Osdel in the Italianate style, is one of the few pre-Civil War courthouses still standing in Illinois. Its design bears a resemblance to the Cook County Courthouse of 1853, which was lost in the Great Chicago Fire. Adjacent to it, the Sheriff’s House and Jail famously housed Eugene Debs, the labor leader of the 1894 Pullman Strike, during his six-month imprisonment for defying a court injunction. These buildings served as McHenry County’s government headquarters until the early 1970s when operations moved to a larger facility in Woodstock.

After years of careful planning, the City of Woodstock began a full-scale interior restoration of the Old Courthouse complex in February 2022. The revitalized Old Courthouse Center reopened to the public in August 2023, marking a new

chapter for this historic property. Situated on the west side of Woodstock’s Historic Square, the restored Old Courthouse Center encompasses approximately 30,000 square feet of vibrant, mixed-use commercial space. The comprehensive renovation updated all three stories of the building and included the addition of a modern glassand-brick stairwell and elevator, ensuring accessibility to every level. The updated space is now home to retail units, a restaurant, a catering kitchen, a large event venue, and versatile meeting spaces.

The restoration included the installation of new gas, water, sanitary, stormwater, and power systems, along with a state-ofthe-art geothermal heating and cooling system. This energyefficient upgrade delivers an estimated 40% savings in energy use, underscoring the City’s commitment to sustainability while preserving the historical integrity of this treasured landmark.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Chester Gould, creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip which ran 1931 to 1977, lived in rural Woodstock for 50 years. The Dick Tracy comic strip originally premiered in the Detroit Mirror, then in the New York Daily News, followed by the Chicago Tribune, and then on to nationwide syndication, and eventually to international audiences. The crime fighting adventures of Gould’s Dick Tracy character were so popular that the comic strip appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News for 45 consecutive years, and it was seen in 27 foreign papers. It is one of the top 10 longest running comic strips of all time.

VILLAGE OF WONDER LAKE

The Village of Wonder Lake is the fastest growing community in the State of Illinois as announced by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2024.

The Hancock Drive business district was annexed into the village in 2024 and a $12M water/sewer expansion to serve the east side area is underway.

The Meadows of West Bay has completed construction and opened their park and boat launch on the lake. The Stonewater development continues to build towards its planned 3,700 homes which includes areas of retail and commercial activity. Their aquatic center opened during the summer of 2023 and expansions to the center are planned.

The Village has established a full-time Public Works, Building, and Water Department. This expansion of services places experienced staff in a position to provide responsive customer service during regular business hours.

The village was incorporated in 1974 as the Village of Sunrise Ridge with a subsequent name change to the Village of Wonder Lake. The population of the Wonder Lake area is approximately 15,000 with just over 4100 residing within the corporate limits of the Village of Wonder Lake.

The Wonder Lake community is privileged to be the home of the Wonder Lake Ski Show Team. Nationally recognized, they entertain on the lake nearly every Friday evening

during the summer. The community supports many clubs and organizations, the oldest social one being the Yacht Club. Sailboat races occur every Sunday in the summer. The Wonder Lake Sportsman’s Club, which is the oldest, actively helps manage wildlife in and around the lake. Fish stocking, bird management and wetland protection and restoration are part of their mission.

Numerous village sponsored events occur throughout the year. These include a winter holiday festival, a weekly summer farmers market, Fall Fest and the Fourth of July celebration. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Wonder Lake Community.

The Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proud to serve the Wonder Lake community and welcomes all new businesses and residents to the area! Together we can be a cohesive voice in local matters. You can stay informed of new developments in the area, network with an expanded business community and engage with community leaders. We look forward to growing this relationship with the Wonder Lake community!

TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT

Township Government is older than 1776. It originated in the mid-1600s, more than 100 years before our country became an independent nation. Township government in Illinois dates back to 1787, when Congress established the Northwest Territory and designated counties and townships within the territories. When the second Illinois Constitution was adopted in 1848 it gave counties the option to include townships in their governmental structure.

A majority of Illinois counties chose the township system in a general election of 1849, among them being McHenry County, where the voters almost unanimously chose township government in a referendum in November of 1849.

A Township, as a political and geographic subdivision, is a municipal corporate body that can sue and be sued, own property, borrow money

and levy taxes. The officials may act for the electorate in the Township’s name when conducting business. Townships have many duties and some permissive powers. Services expressly required of all townships include providing for welfare assistance, building and maintaining rural roads, assessment of property and preventing the spread of communicable disease. In addition to this, townships may establish libraries, medical clinics, museums, community buildings, public rest stations, mental health facilities and youth committees.

McHenry County is divided into 17 townships. There are generally eight elected officers in each township. These are the supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner and four trustees. The term of office for each position is four years. Terms are synchronous rather than staggered. The annual meeting of the township electors is held

the second Tuesday in April each year.

The Supervisor is the Chief Executive Officer of the township and is responsible for the township funds, serving as treasurer of all funds and records all transactions in an official book.

The Supervisor must file a statement of the financial status of the township with the township clerk. A summary of this report must be published annually.

One of the most important functions of the Supervisor is in the area of General Assistance. The Supervisor of General Assistance gives aid to the needy. Money used for this purpose is raised by local taxes and non-State receiving units, which applies to most of the 1,400 plus townships in Illinois. The money thus raised is used to provide food, shelter, utilities, medical care and burial whenever necessary.

EDUCATION

Woodstock School District 200 serves students in grades PreK12 who live in the communities of Woodstock, Bull Valley, Greenwood, the west side of Wonder Lake, and unincorporated McHenry County. The school district was formed in 1969, when two elementary districts and one high school district consolidated, but education in Woodstock started in 1847. Today, our schools offer a strong standardsbased educational program that is based on best practices and innovation but that is also rooted in the rich traditions of our 150-year-old community.

District 200 currently operates 12 schools: the Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center where all of the community’s youngest children begin their education; six elementary schools serving students in grades 1-5; two middle schools for students in grades 6-8; two comprehensive high schools; and the Clay Academy, a therapeutic day school for students in grades 3-12 with special needs.

A 2006 referendum allowed the school district to complete $105 million in school construction which included new elementary, middle and high school buildings, an addition to the early learning center, and the remodeling and conversion of a former middle school to an elementary school.

District 200 provides a wide variety of programs to help every child to succeed. Early childhood education, dual language, bilingual and gifted programs, Advanced Placement classes, career and technical training, and special needs programs strengthen the general

education curriculum. A districtwide focus on reading, writing and mathematics combined with the use of technology as a learning tool help prepare all students for success in and outside of the classroom.

District 200 high school students excel at the state and national levels in both academics and extracurricular activities. District 200 high school students perform very well on ACT and Advanced Placement tests, and our graduates attend some of the top colleges and universities in the nation. Elementary and middle school students consistently score above the state average on standardized achievement tests.

The Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center is a recognized model for early childhood education. Outside of the classroom, District 200 provides an extensive selection of athletic, fine arts, enrichment and extra-curricular programs. Students regularly excel at the state level in a variety of competitions, including music, mathematics, graphic arts and athletic events.

Located in Woodstock and established in 1959, Marian Central Catholic High School is a small co-educational, college preparatory school that makes a big impact. Each student receives a personalized education plan to ensure individual achievement, academic success, and personal growth. The Marian Central Advantage is the ideology that each student is a part of a tight knit learning group, where academics, spirituality, athletics, and student life come together as one family. Marian’s academic program includes regular, honors, advanced placement, and dual credit college preparatory courses. 80% of the students achieve

honor roll status and 98% of seniors are college bound at esteemed colleges nationwide. Over $18.2 Million in college scholarships were earned by our Class of 2024 (76 students) and Marian Central continues to be the area leader in Illinois State Scholars.

Marian Central Athletics embody both a competitive spirit and skill, where sportsmanship and character are fostered in a motivating environment. With 23 sports to choose from, students can compete on a variety of different teams. In addition to athletics, students also have opportunities to join our 35 clubs, activities, and extensive opportunities in Music, Art, and Theater.

We proudly welcome students from 35 area schools, both private and public. Marian Central has an inclusive transfer policy, where transfer students are admitted into our family at various times of the school year. Our top priorities include student safety, educating the entire person, instilling Catholic Christian values, and supporting our students as they grow towards future success. Financial assistance and a student work/job program is available, as well as daily bus service. ABOUT HISPANIC CONNECTIONS

Hispanic Connections, hosted by the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry, was born from a vision: to unite the community of Woodstock, by fostering a supportive network that encourages individual and collective growth while making a meaningful difference in our community. What began as a dream of collaboration has grown into a movement—a force for connection, celebration, and leadership in Woodstock.

BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN CULTURES

At the heart of our work is the belief that unity strengthens communities.  Recognizing a need for representation and understanding, we’ve dedicated ourselves to closing the cultural and social gap, ensuring that the Hispanic voice is heard, valued, and celebrated. We demonstrate how two cultures can come together, not as separate entities, but as partners in building a thriving, inclusive community.

Through our events and initiatives, we foster opportunities for cultural appreciation and shared experiences:

Mexican Independence Day Celebration: An annual highlight, this event brings thousands to the Historic Square together in celebration of Mexican heritage with music, food and so much family fun.

Day of the Dead: Hosted in collaboration with the Woodstock Opera House, this beloved cultural event honors traditions while educating and inspiring the community.

Cookies and Churros with Santa: In partnership with the City of Woodstock, this family-friendly event celebrates the holiday season with a blend of traditions, bringing joy to children and families alike.

In addition to hosting these events, we proudly have donated to non-for-profit organizations throughout McHenry County. We support scholarships and multicultural programs in our local District 200 schools, investing in the next generation of leaders. Since 2018, we have sponsored Hispanic candidates for the annual Miss Woodstock Scholarship Pageant, empowering young women to represent their heritage with pride and confidence.

JOIN US

Our journey is just beginning. The future of Hispanic Connections is as bright as the community we serve, and we invite you to become a part of our story. By joining us, you’ll become part of a leadership movement dedicated to creating opportunities and giving voice to the Hispanic community in Woodstock and McHenry County. For more information, call (815) 338-2436 or find our Facebook page, “Hispanic Connections Woodstock”.
