If bleeding comes on suddenly, rinse your mouth out with water and see if you can identify the source of the blood flow. Depending on the volume of bleeding, or what you see, you may want to contact your dentist immediately. But if your gums bleed after brushing, for example, and they are sore and appear red and puffy, the bleeding can be an early sign of periodontal (gum) disease. That is a condition you definitely want to address as soon as possible. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. As with most health issues, the sooner you start treating gum disease, the easier it will be to get it under control and eliminate it.

Darius Smith, 43, of 5148 S. Marshfield Ave., Chicago, was charged at 11:50 a.m. Jan. 9 with obstruction of justice, driving while license suspended, and operating an uninsured vehicle after a traffic stop on Lemont Road at Cheese Road.
A: Under various circumstances, bleeding can occur in the mouth. Bleeding is to be expected after a dental procedure like a tooth extraction. Your dentist will tell you what to expect in a circumstance like that. Bleeding can also occur after an accident, like biting your tongue or the inside of your cheek.
As mentioned, bleeding after a tooth extraction is normal. You should follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. Generally, a blood clot will develop in the site within an hour or so after the procedure. You should leave the clot undisturbed for a day or two until the wound begins to heal. If bleeding persists, you can press a gauze pad on the wound to stanch the flow. Talk with your dentist about the causes of bleeding in the mouth.

Heroes are needed for special-needs families We need heroes. At Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, we rely on heroes in order for us to be able to serve the many families with special needs in DuPage County. These heroes aren’t wearing capes and masks. They aren’t flying through town in search of villains. But they are saving the day. COMMUNITY Who are these heroes? VOICE They are people just like you, Sandy your friends, neighbors and Gbur your family members. They are people who champion for our participants and families. We see heroes every day at WDSRA. What makes them heroes is how they support WDSRA and in turn our families. It may be through a recommendation made to a family looking to help their son or daughter make friends. It could be the cheers of encouragement given as our athletes compete on the field or in the gym. It is often a simple act of kindness shown by coming over to speak with our young adults who are enjoying an evening of socializing. Heroes make it possible for Joey to be a part of a Special Olympics team his family would not be able to afford without a scholarship. Once on the team, Joey is a part of something bigger than himself. He not only has teammates but friends who embrace him for who he is. Because of heroes, Olivia can settle into camp even though she struggles with transitions. There is an iPad customized with apps specifically for her and a variety of sensory tools available to make those transitions go more smoothly. Mom and Dad finally have that elusive feeling of being at ease knowing that Olivia will have a positive experience each and every day. Right now, we need heroes who can show their support through ticket purchases, donations, sponsorships and the magnanimous giving associated with our largest fundraising event of the year, The Black & Red Bash. Leading up to the event, we are looking for donations for our silent auction and our wine/ spirit pull. Sponsorships are appreciated because they greatly help offset the cost of the event and add to the financial success of the evening. On Feb. 28, we need you, your friends, neighbors and family members to attend and give from the heart. Your support will contribute significantly to the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams of families like Joey’s and Olivia’s. This is one evening we need our heroes by our side. Consider making a donation, securing a sponsorship or buying tickets to The Black & Red Bash. You too can be a hero! Learn about The Black & Red Bash and buy tickets at www.wdsra.com or 630-681-0962.

Lisle Library District Board Vice President Jay French (far left) and Board President Richard Flint (far right) present certificates to Cathy and Patrick Cawiezel on Jan. 14 during the naming of the Albert F. and Marilyn W. Cawiezel Meeting Room, honoring their parents.
A meeting room at Lisle Public Library has been renamed the Albert F. and Marilyn W. Cawiezel Meeting Room in honor of the Lisle couple. In the late 1960s, Albert and Marilyn charitably allowed the library to operate out of a space they owned at 1017 Front St. The library stayed there until moving to its current home in April 1981. Marilyn later became president of the Lisle Library District Board of Trustees. After assessing damage from a Jan. 8 flood, the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville has scheduled its reopening for April. A main water line burst overnight, causing flood damage to all three floors of the museum. While closed, the museum will continue to offer off-site programs. For information on museum programs and repair updates, visit dupagechildrens.org.

Technology not required
A few years ago, The New York Times had an article reporting that most of the schools in the Silicon Valley area did not allow any electronic devices in the classroom and encouraged the parents not to let their children to use them at home. The students actually learned how to add, subtract, multiply, etc., and use their brain and memory. When educated and it was needed, the students could learn how to use a calculator or computer in a few hours or less. If this were true here you might be able to find a young checkout server in a store that could actually make change without using the cash register.

traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents. This section of the village is about one-eighth the size of the total. Ridiculous.
Underpass could save lives
I’d like to respond to the overpass/underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/ underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.

It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a

Kudos to the person who wrote that “reminder” to keep pets inside. If you have a pet, it is indeed a “member of the family” and should be treated as such. At the very least, they should be treated right. This means they live inside, have proper food and vet care. They should be housed inside during hot weather as well as cold weather and rainy weather. In other words, they need to live inside just as their “pawrents” do. People who cannot or won’t do this should not have pets.

This program is by appointment only. To take advantage of this free service, contact the program coordinator for an appointment: Mary Wennerstrom Drug Disposal Coordinator (630)-434-5681 mwennerstrom@downers.us Residents who are unable to drop off their medications may request a Crime Prevention Officer to come to their home for collection. It is estimated that each day 2500 teenagers get high for the first time on unused drugs they find in medicine cabinets at home or at their grandparents’ homes. There are also incidents of accidental ingestion of these medications by children, the elderly, and pets. The medications will subsequently be disposed of using the protocols followed for disposing of drugs held in evidence. There is no charge for this service.

Trojan boys dominate for sixth straight win By DAVE OWEN msleditorial@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The pregame inductions of John Lackaff and Rebecca Rusch into the Downers Grove North Hall of Fame were just the first tributes to Trojans’ history Saturday. Hitting 10 of 11 field goal attempts in the first quarter, the Trojans’ boys basketball team rolled to a 60-33 win against Andrew to run their win streak to six games. “I’m hearing we’re the first team to do so [win six straight] since 2001,” Downers Grove North senior guard Jordon Kedrowski said. “We’re pretty excited about it. “I thought we came out in the first quarter and executed what we needed to do. [We played] A great first quarter, and it propelled us through the rest of the game.” Kedrowski led Downers North (105) with 15 points, but balance was the key as seven different Trojans scored in the first quarter, which ended with the Trojans up 24-11. “I thought we were patient, and defensively we stayed in the stance and got some stops and contested some shots,” Downers North coach Jim Thomas said. “And we got some easy runouts early that allowed us to build up a little bit of a lead.” A 3-pointer at the buzzer by Evan Jakobsze capped the near-perfect first quarter. North’s defense limited Andrew to 24 percent field-goal shooting on the night (11 of 46), including 3 of 23 in the second half. The Trojans cooled a bit from their hot start but led 37-20 at halftime and 56-28 with 2:55 left. The Trojans’ six-win streak started with the late December return from injury of 6-foot-7 football standout David Edwards. “Dave’s a huge piece,” Kedrowski said, “and everyone’s putting personal agendas aside and we’re playing as a team. It doesn’t matter who scores. Different guys can step up each night, and everybody’s contributing.” Forward Matt Mahlke provided an instant spark off the bench Saturday with six points and a blocked shot in the decisive first quarter. Jack Fallbacher, Jakobsze (five points), Colin Kramper (four points, five rebounds) and Myles Farley (four rebounds, four assists) were other key contributors. Even with 2014 all-conference swingman Devin Blake (ankle) sidelined, the Trojans are rolling through

January and hoping for more. “The six wins are nice, but that’s not our goal,” Kedrowski said. “We want to finish strong in conference because we didn’t have a good first half. We’re trying to have a better second half, pick up some key wins over good teams and then get a good seed in sectionals.”

Benet takes third at MLK tourney SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WHEATON – Playing its fourth game in three days, the Redwings rode a combined 42 points from Colin Bonnett and Dan Sobolewski to a 71-62 overtime win against Wheaton South on Monday in the third-place game of the Wheaton South MLK tournament. The Redwings (12-6) erased a sixpoint deficit in the fourth quarter and held a three-point advantage before the tournament hosts sunk a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Although Benet was held without a field goal in the extra period, the boys made 13 of 14 free throws and played shutdown defense to run away with the overtime win. Sobolewski and Bonnett each scored 21 points for Benet while James Dockery chipped in 11 points.
The Redwings advanced to the third-place game with hard fought victories against Downers Grove South and Metea Valley on Saturday. Bonnett’s 16 points paced Benet in the 63-50 opening-round game against DGS before Sobolewski scored 16 in a 58-54 win against Metea Valley. Benet’s only tournament loss was a 62-51 defeat to eventual tournament champion Champaign Central in the semifinals. Sobolewski and senior Cameron Graves each had 13 points and Dockery chipped in 12 points. Bonnett was the lone Benet player named to the all-tournament team. The Redwings resume conference play against St. Viator at 7 p.m. Friday in Lisle. North followed Friday’s win with a 5246 loss against Marist on Saturday at the McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook as its record slipped to 10-7. Green had 12 points and six rebounds, and Winters finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. In spite of Saturday’s loss, the victory against Hinsdale South showed the Trojans are on the right track with the postseason rapidly approaching. “We defended better than we have in a while,” Bolt said. “We didn’t allow them to score in the first quarter. We can be really good defensively, and that needs to be our identity. “It was a good team win. With a young team still trying to find its identity, it’s good to find a way to win.”

DOWNERS GROVE – As a 6-foot-2 forward, Peyton Winters doesn’t take many 3-pointers. But the Downers Grove North senior drained a 3-pointer then assisted on Izzy Greenblatt’s trey to provide some late highlights in the Trojans’ 40-29 win against Hinsdale South on Friday. Winters also scored six points in the first quarter as North grabbed an early lead and never let go for a senior night win. “It was good to see Peyton be as aggressive as she was offensively and be as dominant as she was defensively,” North head coach Stephan Bolt said. “She came to play, and she picked us up and gave us a boost.” The Trojans led 11-0 after a quarter with Winters and the three other seniors – Ashley Bihun, Greenblatt and Ashley Wojciechowski – getting the starting nod alongside junior Jaida Green. It was an 18-0 game in the second before Hinsdale South broke into the scoring column. Junior Lauren Porcelli scored seven points in the second quarter to help propel North to a 22-9 halftime lead. “I was really excited that our seniors brought a ton of energy to the team,” Porcelli said. “We’ve been working a lot on defense in practice and it really showed. We had each other’s back and it was just the team together that had a great start.” Hinsdale South clawed back to make it 32-23 heading to the fourth quarter, but the Trojans quickly pushed the lead back to double digits on a Green layup and Winters’ 3-pointer.
Lisle boys continue recent domination of Westmont By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com
Game breakdown
LISLE – Regardless of the year, lineup and location, the Lisle boys basketball team seems to have Westmont’s number. The Lions orchestrated a second-half comeback Friday to defeat Westmont 62-58, marking Lisle’s fifth win in the past six meetings against the rival Sentinels, a stat that dates back to a 40-33 victory at Westmont on Jan. 13, 2012. Since the 2011-12 season, Lisle has beaten Westmont four times in the regular season and once in playoffs. The Lions’ lone loss to the Sentinels came in an Interstate Eight conference tournament game in January 2013; but the boys bounced back the following month by knocking Westmont out of the regional playoffs. During Friday’s most recent rivalry matchup in front of a raucous Lisle crowd, the home team erased a threepoint halftime deficit then held on for a four-point victory. “Our fans were crazy tonight, so I’m
Lisle 62, Westmont 58 LISLE LEADERS n Nick Massura: 18 points n Mark McGrath: 15 points n Ryan Gillen: 11 points glad we could send them home with an emotional win,” Lisle guard Nick Massura said. “We fed off that energy and were able to come up with a great first quarter.” Lisle dominated in the early going, jumping out to a 12-2 lead and holding a 14-point advantage before closing the first quarter ahead 21-11. “It was a great atmosphere tonight, the administration and athletic department did a great job of promoting the event,” Lisle head coach Mark LaScala said. “We host a regional this year and this game had that type of playoff energy.” But it was Westmont that came out
hot in the second quarter, opening the second frame with a 13-3 run to even the score at 24. Westmont center Marcus Mott-Larson had 13 first-half points to help the Sentinels take a 34-31 into halftime. The Lisle defense responded in the second half, forcing several Westmont turnovers that resulted in odd man rushes, layups and open looks for Massura, who had nine points in the third quarter. “We have to force some turnovers because we’re so tiny,” LaScala said. “There were times when I thought our defense looked like Swiss cheese. If we don’t force some turnovers I think we’re in trouble, and we forced some timely ones.” A Ryan Gillen steal and a basket gave Lisle a seemingly insurmountable 58-51 lead with 1:30 left in the game; but the Sentinels again stormed back to cut the game to two points before a pair of Lions free throws put the game out of Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com reach. Massura led Lisle with 18 points, Lisle’s Mark McGrath tries to make a move while sophomore Mark McGrath Friday during a game against Westmont at chipped in 15 points and Gillen added 11. We hope you see how warm and welcoming our school community is - it’s something we value and hope to pass on to all who visit with us.” St. Joseph School offers challenging

Blankets For Babies An Exciting Service Project! SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese The holidays are traditionally a time of giving, sharing, and doing things for others, especially for the less fortunate. Although there are many families who need assistance throughout the year, the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons offer many opportunities to consider helping others through tough times. Sharing Connections, www.SharingConnections.org, is an organization that provides gently used furniture and household items to families at or below the poverty level who are struggling with fire, flood, or job loss, or with domestic violence relocation. They also provide services to veterans suffering from war trauma. Sharing Connections provides their clients, who live mainly in DuPage County and Metropolitan Chicago, with items they can’t afford to purchase. On December 10, 2014, Sharing Connections received a special delivery from Mikaela Maurer, an eighth-grader at St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic School. Mikaela
recruited some friends from her eighth grade class to work with her to create eight fleece blankets for underprivileged families. The project was part of her required Sacrament of Confirmation service project. “Blankets for Babies” was the name of Mikaela’s special project. Her friends who helped create the blankets included Betsy Romenesko, Emily Aument, Katie Stapleton, Melissa Bohanon, John Snyder, Joe Vogrin, Liam O’Connell, John McSweeney, Eddie Rodrigez, Alex Luka, Lauren Moore, Cassie Cahoon, Lauren Myczek, Mia Albian, and Anna Brady. St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Parish and School was established in 1891, and currently serves over 2,800 parish families. Children have been attending St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic School for over 100 years. The school offers an excellent education in a caring and giving community, as evidenced by Mikaela Maurer’s “Blankets for Babies” project. Students are well prepared for high school and college, with a strong academic, extra-curricular, and spiritual foundation. For more information, contact: St. Mary’s of Gostyn Catholic School 3-yr.
