Lisle Planning Commission gives positive review of Old Village Hall site proposal By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com LISLE – The Lisle Planning and Zoning Commission gave a proposed redevelopment of the Old Village Hall site a positive recommendation Wednesday night. The commission gave a unanimous (7 to 0) recommendation for the project, which would construct a 206unit apartment complex and 15,000 square feet of commercial space on the 3-acre site on Burlington Avenue between Main Street and Center Avenue. The proposal will now go to the Lisle Village Board. Community Development

News to your phone Visit shawurl.com/texts to sign up for news and weather text alerts from Suburban Life. Director Tony Budzikowski said the board could hear the proposal at either its Dec. 1 or Dec. 15 scheduled meetings, with the latter the more likely date. At that meeting, the developer – Marquette Cos. – will make a presentation on the project to the board. That will be followed by board discussion and an open forum with public comments, Budzikowski said.

Marquette Cos., which earlier this year purchased the site from the village for $1 million, hopes to build two five-story buildings on the property. But public opposition to the proposal has surfaced at board meetings. In September, more than 40 community members turned out for a board meeting to express concerns with the project, including the size and density of the development and lack of impact studies and public awareness surrounding the proposal. Marquette is seeking departures from village standards in the structure’s height, parking availability

and apartment placement. Proposed elements for the commercial portion of the development include a roughly 5,200-square-foot anchor tenant consisting of a sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating, as well as a fitness center and two public plazas, documents state. The apartments, which would primarily be one-bedroom units, would cater to young professionals with onsite personnel, a leasing office, a clubhouse, a pool and a rooftop dog park. In exchange for purchasing the land, Marquette will receive about $700,000 in incentives, Village Attorney Rob Bush said.

Woodridge encourages shoppers to shop local SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WOODRIDGE – The village of Woodridge is encouraging residents to shop local on Small Business Saturday this weekend. “As you start your holiday shopping, keep several of your local Woodridge businesses in mind,” a news release stated. “Woodridge is home to some

of the most dynamic retailers, restaurants, service providers, markets and specialty stores in the region.” A business directory of locally owned Woodridge businesses is available on the newly renovated Shop Woodridge website at www.shopwoodridge.net. Mayor Gina Cunningham reminded shoppers of the ad-

vantages of shopping in the village. “Woodridge not only has businesses to meet your holiday shopping needs – it has a lower sales tax rate than many of its surrounding communities,” she said. “Paying less in sales tax means more money in your pocket this holiday season.” Linda Hymes, chair of the Seven Bridges Business Asso-

ciation, also encouraged local shopping. “Shopping Woodridge small businesses is not a mere exchange of money for product – it is an important investment in our local community, “ she said. “When you shop Woodridge small business, you are telling the merchant/service provider that you support that business.”

WOODRIDGE – Inspired by the true story from a book they read, the sixth-graders at William F. Murphy Elementary School in Woodridge have raised more than $2,400 for the charitable organization Water for South Sudan. “For the last three weeks, we’ve been inundated like crazy with a project that started with a book,” Murphy sixth-grade teacher Karen Lawrence said. The book is “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, which tells the story of Salva Dut, one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” who fled the country during its civil war. Dut, who escaped to the U.S., founded Water for South Sudan to raise money to drill fresh water wells in the country. Murphy sixth-grade teacher Maureen Pacana read the book during the summer and was eager to share the story with her students. Pacana teamed with Lawrence to add the book to the curriculum. “After we were finished reading, the kids wanted to do something,” Lawrence said. The teachers learned about Water for South Sudan’s Iron Giraffe Challenge, which asks schools to raise at least $1,000. Murphy’s sixth-grader classes raised money by selling copies of the book for $10 and bottles of water during lunch for 50 cents. They also received donations from people in the community. Pacana said it took the students only a week to reach the $1,000 and they have set a new goal of $3,000 by the end of the school year. “Unbelievably, people are just donating,” she said. “It’s

children will have more time to spend on their education. “Our kids really want that for the other kids because they know how important it is to be educated,” she said. Pacana said she hopes the project is instilling a philanthropic spirit in the students. “We keep saying that the feeling of giving and helping other people can make a difference,” she said. Lawrence said she hopes to have more activities related to the project, such as a Skype

She said the students also are eagerly awaiting the delivery of an iron giraffe flag as a reward for passing the Iron Giraffe Challenge. She said a team of sixthgrade students is responsible for raising the flag outside the school each morning. “They can’t wait until the giraffe flag gets here and they get to raise it for the first time,” she said.

SOME FACTS ON CHEWING TOBACCO Q: What are the dangers of chewing tobacco? A: The dangers of smoking tobacco are far better known – lung cancer most prominent among them – but chewing tobacco poses its own set of risks. Chewing tobacco goes by a variety of names: dip, spit, snuff, tobacco, chew, and so on. But by whatever name, it’s to be avoided. Smokeless tobacco, according to the National Cancer Institute, contains at least 28 chemicals known to cause cancer. Chewing tobacco is known to cause oral, pancreatic, and esophageal cancer. It may also cause or contribute to heart and gum disease, and cause pre-cancerous oral lesions. A study done a few years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that tobacco chewers were 400 percent more likely to develop tooth decay than non-chewers. The habit of chewing tobacco can also leave you with some highly unattractive side issues, foul breath and discolored teeth among them. And chewing tobacco can be as addictive as smoking it. Studies have found that nicotine levels in the blood of people who chew tobacco are similar to those who smoke. Using smokeless tobacco can also diminish the senses of taste and smell, which can contribute to unhealthy eating habits. Your dentist can tell you more about the dangers of tobacco, regardless of what form it’s in.

Envisioning the future of facilities in D-99

Jim Kolodziej is the director of facilities at District 99, which includes North High School and South High School in Downers Grove. Laura Burke, general manager lburke@shawmedia.com 630-427-6213

Dave Lemery, editor dlemery@shawmedia.com 630-427-6250

Much like the rest of Lisle, the Lisle Lanes parking lot was under water after more than 7 inches of rain fell on the area in April 2013.

The village of Lisle was notified this month it has been awarded $2,889,864 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help fund flood mitigation projects. This is great news for the village, as the funds are much needed and will be used to demolish thirteen residential structures and elevate six structures above the base flood elevation to reduce future flood-related damages, according to the village. Thanks to FEMA and the village for working together for an important task in town. Thanks to all of our loyal readers of Woodridge Suburban Life. We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope you enjoy the company of friends and family and, of course, a delicious meal! David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

The combined square footage of our facilities at Downers Grove North High and South High is more than one million square feet, which represents a lot of nooks and crannies. It’s my job to know the condition of every inch of our schools and to make sure we spend our resources wisely to repair and improve our schools. To keep both buildings runCOMMUNITY ning efficiently, every year VOICE we develop a comprehensive Jim list of maintenance and repairs and then whittle the Kolodziej list down to address the most pressing needs. Just as it is essential to maintain what we have, we believe it also is our responsibility to plan for the students of tomorrow. The additions made throughout the years to North High (which opened in 1928) and South High (which opened in 1964) happened at a time when enrollment was growing. Today, enrollment is steady or even declining; however, technology has impacted every classroom and facet of how we teach students, and we need to adapt to that fact. To determine how our facilities need to function and support our students in the future, we have started to develop a master facility plan. So far, we’ve finished a detailed audit of the condition of each building. We also have sat down with teachers to hear firsthand how they’d like our spaces to adapt to support their work. From those conversations, we’ve identified several key areas for improvements. We’re now asking you for your input and hope you will choose to participate in one (or both) sessions: • 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 8: North High School Facility Review and Input Session • 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 10: South High Facility Review and Input Session We’ll talk about how we envision transforming our spaces and then ask you to contribute your thoughts in a small group setting. At 8:30 p.m., a tour of key areas of the buildings will be offered. Refreshments will be served. To learn more or to register, visit www.csd99.org/d99buildingfutures. The future is never certain, but what all of us at District 99 are certain about is we will continue to always do what’s best for students. And we believe that at least starting the conversation of how we should evolve and sharing our dreams for what might be possible is a good place start.

SOUND OFF I read a couple weeks ago in a Sound Off about Westmont’s CUSD 201 referendum. It blew my mind that it was defeated eight months ago at 78 percent. It came back and got defeated again this month, and the school indicated it might try again. Is the referendum going to keep coming back until it wins? Enough is enough. Taxing bodies get one chance, if at all, to choke us out of more money. A referendum that is voted down should be dead upon all votes counted. If you’re sick of this, go to meetings and voice your opinion. No more re-referendum.

The proposed five-story high, nearly one-block long development on the site of soon-to-be demolished Edwards House on Maple [Avenue] in Downers Grove is not meant to provide affordable housing. In fact, the developer described it as 55 luxury condos. The many other empty new condos in Downers Grove’s business district have so far had zero stimulant effect on business. Maybe the proposed 55 luxury condos will quickly sell out to new owners who are eager to patronize Downers Grove stores if given an exclusive name to reflect their luxury status. How about Denburn Towers? With a name like that, they’re as good as sold.

This is bullying and intimidation and it’s disgusting. Vote out the three incumbents this spring and get Dianne McGuire and Chair Erin Birt forced out, by court order if necessary. They are a disgrace to COD and they’ve embarrassed all of us with national attention for their abuses. Let’s restore COD’s – and our own – reputation by replacing the board with more independent voices.

EVANSTON – Downers Grove North’s girls swimming team did it again. A year after winning its first state trophy with a second-place finish at the 2013 state meet, the Trojans repeated the feat by scoring 118 points Saturday at Evanston to tie Rosary for second place. Loyola won the championship with 148 points. “I knew we could do really great things,” Downers North senior Gabriele Serniute said. “So this is so great to see what I thought we could do actually play out.” While still blessed with a strong corps of swimmers, Downers Grove North was viewed as being weaker after graduating star twins Gabby and Maddy Sims, who now swim for Harvard and Northwestern, respectively. But the Trojans didn’t buy it. The skeptics only fueled the fire of a great senior class that includes Division I recruits Serniute (Illinois) and Emily Albrecht (Ohio State) as well as University of Chicago signee Daria Wick. “I think we had more fire this year because we had so much to prove,” Serniute said. “I just feel like we had more excitement. It’s crazy.” Downers Grove North coach Judy Busse figured she had a top-five team and made a strategic decision to have her four best swimmers pass up some individual glory by doing all three relays in an effort to win another trophy. “I think we pretty much figured out early on when we made the decision to go with the relays that the purpose was to make sure that we could get to a third place,” Busse said. “In the end, [a trophy] was the goal. We just didn’t know which it was going to be.” The tactic paid off as the quartet of Albrecht, Serniute, Wick and sophomore anchor Lindsay Mathys racked up 80 points with a trio of top-four finishes.

The girls basketball season has tipped off with many teams playing in tournaments to start the campaign. Here’s the outlook for Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Lisle and other area teams:

ished fifth in the East Suburban Catholic Conference last season, arguably the toughest girls basketball conference in the state. Bradley University commit Emily Eshoo spearheads an offense that returns three starters and five seniors from last season, including 6-foot senior Emily Schramek and Kathleen Doyle, who averaged double-digit points as a sophomore and led the team in blocks, steals, assists and charges taken. Returners Kendal Schramek, Morgan Thomalla, Emma Hlavin and Colleen Pfister will be counted on for scoring depth and leadership. Sophomore Katherine Jaseckas also joins this year’s team and gives the Redwings some much-needed height in the low post. Benet is hosting the Naperville Central High School-Benet Academy Tip Off tournament this week before facing Loyola on Dec. 2.

Outlook: The Trojans are the front-runners in a West Suburban Silver conference they won last season. With a solid corps of returning players, DGN also is eyeing another long playoff run, as the team captured a regional title before bowing out in the sectional semis last season. Head coach Stephan Bolt’s offense will run through Jaida Green, who averaged 16 points, four assists and four rebounds per game as a sophomore. A proven scorer, Green improved her strength and rebounding skills during the offseason, according to Bolt. Returners Peyton Winters and Lauren Porcelli also will be factors on both sides of the ball. Winters is a force in the low post and averaged 11 points, seven rebounds and more than five blocks per game last season. Porcelli added seven points per game and provides tenacious on-the-ball defense. Izzy Greenblatt, Madison Farnsworth, Colleen Miller and Brigid Miller should see ample playing time for the Trojans. Downers Grove North is finishing up play at the Glenbard East Invite to start the season before hosting conference rival Hinsdale Central on Tuesday.

Swing forward and premier defender Kate Twaddle, last year’s assist leader, and Leah Reeves are seniors that will be counted on to score and log big minutes. The Lions are playing in the Riverside Brookfield Thanksgiving tournament before a Dec. 1 matchup against Seneca.

Outlook: The departures of guard Aysia Bugg to University of Pittsburgh and forward Ryaen Johnson to Loyola University marks a new era for Bolingbrook girls basketball. Head coach Chris Smith’s talented yet unproven squad is again vying for a finish amid the top teams in the conference. Among the returners is 6-foot-3 Parris Bryant, who will anchor the low post when she returns from an injury. Forwards Alecia Gulledge and Cara Davis will provide depth in the paint, while a slew of guards will anchor the backcourt. Bolingbrook girls will travel to Tennessee this weekend to participate in the Turkey Jamm Shootout. The team then plays a home game against Joliet Central on Dec. 10.
