Peterson allegedly tries to hire hit man By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com

Drew Peterson leaves the Will County Courthouse on May 30, 2008. He now faces charges he tried to hire a hit man to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow. At one point, Glasgow had called a news conference for Monday afternoon. But it was later canceled. Glasgow was questioned by reporters outside of his office, but would not comment other than to say yes when asked if he may be called as a witness in the murder-for-hire case. “It’s unbelievable,” said Peterson’s former defense attorney Joe Lopez. “I never noticed any animosity Drew had toward Glasgow during the trial. “I wonder if this is just based on some jailhouse snitch or if there are recordings to support it,” Lopez added. “[Peterson] knows better. It’s very out of character.” Peterson made national headlines after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, vanished in 2007. In September 2012, he was sentenced to 38 years for the

murder of Savio, who was found dead in a bathtub in her home in March 2004. While never charged, he remains the only suspect in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson. On Jan. 30, the Bolingbrook Police Pension Board voted unanimously to reject Peterson’s motion to delay a hearing that could stop his pension. Public Safety Director Tom Ross said the board also denied a motion Greenberg filed on Peterson’s behalf to have the charge be made more specific than “a felony conviction.” The Pension Board expects to hold the hearing during their April 24 meeting.

BOLINGBROOK – A 13-year-old Bolingbrook boy died Feb. 4 after collapsing during a basketball game. Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Dramon Ratcliff collapsed during a game at Plainfield Central High School, and he was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Ratcliff was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 8:24 p.m. “An autopsy revealed a previously undiagnosed cardiac condition,” O’Neil said Thursday. Ratcliff was an eighth-grade student at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Plainfield, said Tom Hernandez, spokesman for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202. An honor roll student, Ratcliff played basketball for John F. Kennedy in seventh and eighth grade, Hernandez said. “He was a good student, a good young man,” he said. Hernandez said JFK’s principal, A.J. Hundal, described Ratcliff as a polite young man who got along with his peers and respected his teachers. “His mother said that he loved being a student at JFK, and she knows he was loved by everyone at JFK,” Hernandez said. On Feb. 4, Ratcliff was at Plainfield Central practicing with a private basketball team using the space, Hernandez said. Social workers and counselors were on hand at the middle school Thursday for any students who needed someone to talk to, Hernandez said. “We’ll keep that in place as needed,” he said. O’Neil said toxicology results still are pending in the matter.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow issued a brief statement Monday, saying he may be called as a witness in the murder-for-hire charges filed against Drew Peterson. Peterson was charged Monday with trying to hire a hit man to kill Glasgow, who successfully prosecuted the former Bolingbrook policeman for murder. The Illinois Attorney General’s office announced Peterson, 61, was charged with one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder. The charges allege Peterson, between September 2013 and December 2014, solicited an individual to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against Glasgow. Peterson made an initial appearance Monday on the charges at the Randolph County Courthouse, according to a news release from the attorney general’s office. A message left with his attorney, Steve Greenberg, was not immediately returned. Peterson is in Menard Correctional Center in Randolph County after being convicted in 2012 for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. A spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office would not comment on how the alleged plot was discovered but said information could come out at a preliminary hearing scheduled March 3. “I have absolute faith in law enforcement and our criminal justice system to handle this case appropriately,” Glasgow said in a written statement issued Monday afternoon. “It is unfortunate that prosecutors sometimes must deal with allegations of this nature,” he said. “However, in no way will a threat to my personal safety deter me from the important work I perform as the state’s attorney on behalf of the citizens of Will County.”

District 99 seeks electronic signs By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99’s pursuit of electronic message board signs at North and South high schools remained undimmed by the village council after its meeting Feb. 3. A motion during the meeting allowed further discussion for an amendment that would permit the signs in the campus-scale institutional and public district, also known as INP-2. As of Monday, the zoning ordinance prohibited electronic message board signs in all zoning districts. A vote on the amendment was scheduled for the council’s meeting Tuesday. The school district has been working with the village to begin the application process to rezone its two school properties from residential to INP-2. “District 99 has had an interest in digital content signage for almost a decade and we do understand the prohibitions regarding such signage in the village,” said Superintendent Mark McDonald at the Feb. 3 meeting. “However, we believe our schools have unique and compelling communications reasons that are per-

Find out how they voted To learn the outcome of Tuesday’s council vote on the amendment, visit www.mysuburbanlife.com/ downersgrove. haps different than any other entity in our community.” McDonald said while communications strategies have changed dramatically over the past decade, people still rely on North High signage for information relating to the school, and continue to remark about the lack of signage at South High because of a tornado in 2011. Jim Kolodziej, director of physical plant and operations and purchasing at District 99, presented the proposed signs for the two schools. For North, the plan is to keep the base of the existing sign and add the LED sign on top. The digital sign would be similar in size to the current sign at 8 feet 6 inches tall and 10 feet wide, he said. The South sign would be identical in size to North’s and would be about 30 feet from 63rd Street and 90 feet from Dunham Road. The monument-style signs would of-

fer full-color display on two sides, static text and images and automatic display dimming at night. The messages on screen would last about 12 seconds before disappearing and being replaced by a new message. The signs would be used for school announcements, crisis notification, weather-related closings, notification of drills in progress, government agency announcements and invitations to events, according to District 99 Communications Director Jill Browning. Mayor Martin Tully was on the village council in 2007 when the district first brought up the idea of electronic message boards that the council ultimately rejected. “While I struggle with the digital sign concept, technology has changed, things have changed for the better,” he said. “The most important thing is the new category of INP-2 zoning. That didn’t exist in 2007.” However, Tully expressed concern that allowing INP-2 in one place could lead to widespread use in areas such as the business sector, where the signs wouldn’t provide information that benefits the public. “From my perspective, I would be in

favor of seeing what an ordinance might look like,” he said. According to village documents, the INP-2 zoning district was designed to accommodate development of properties larger than 4 acres for public, civic and institutional use. The only property zoned INP-2 in the village is the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital campus. Village documents indicate other properties that could be eligible for INP-2 zoning include: District 99 properties, Downers Grove Grade School District 58 properties, the Midwestern University campus, park district properties, forest preserve properties and village properties. Commissioner Greg Hose didn’t feel the digital sign concept warranted further discussion, citing concerns for residents in proximity to other properties that would fall under the new ordinance. “In this day and age with technological advancements being what they are, we have myriad ways to communicate. The sign just doesn’t have the same impact,” Hose said. “In terms of the rezoning I am fine, in terms of the location of the South High sign, I am fine with that. But as far as digital signage, I cannot support it at this time.”

Q: How often should I have my teeth cleaned? A: The short answer is you should go for a teeth-cleaning session with your dentist every six months, the same interval that’s recommended for a checkup. Professional cleaning is necessary because no matter how diligent you are in brushing and flossing at home, there’s no way you will be able to reach every nook, cranny and fissure where plaque can accumulate and harden into tartar. The dentist’s office, for one thing, is equipped with the tools that can effectively get into those small spaces. And the work will be done by either the dentist or by a dental hygienist, a licensed professional. They will use either hand-held scalers – small tools used to scrape off the plaque buildup – or perhaps an ultrasonic machine that uses sound waves to loosen the plaque. Then they will wash the plaque away with a jet of cool water. As a precaution against periodontal, or gum, disease, the dentist or the hygienist will also clean the sides of the roots of the teeth. In some cases, this may require the use of an anesthetic, either topical or injected, to eliminate discomfort. As a final step, they will polish your teeth to make them sparkle and to help resist plaque accumulation. Talk with your dentist about the importance of regular professional cleaning.

By Gina Kraman Count carbohydrate grams. Exercise. Check blood sugar levels. Inspect feet to avoid infections. Take medicine. Repeat. Diabetes is a high-maintenance disease, requiring constant vigilance and daily dedication to be well. “Diabetes is a challenging condition,” says Dr. Winton Thein-Wai, an endocrinologist, Woodridge Clinic and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. “Patients need to be committed to their health.” He adds that even with good intentions, patients can get discouraged as their diabetes medicines are expensive and compliance requires self-discipline. Thein-Wai says patients who make a lifestyle commitment to maintain a healthy weight and choose nutritious foods experience more successful outcomes. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics have too much sugar or glucose their blood. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Their bodies don’t produce insulin, the hormone necessary for cells to convert

sugar and starches into energy needed for all bodily functions. With lifelong insulin supplementation, Type 1s can manage their condition to live long, healthy lives, according the American Diabetes Association (ADA). In contrast, Type 2 diabetics’ bodies don’t properly use the insulin they do produce. The most common form of diabetes, Type 2 is often the result of poor lifestyle choices, genetic factors, and being overweight. Sometimes just better nutritional choices and fitness can control Type 2 diabetes. For optimum health, both types need to strive to keep glucose from building up in the blood, to avoid complications to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart. “Type 2 is a progressive disease,” Thein-Wai adds. “Treatment regimes that were successful at one time, may need to be re-adjusted at a later date.” The ADA advises, “For diabetics to reach their goals, they need to stay active, eat well, and find the right team of skilled health care professionals to help them manage their disease.”

Rauner’s leadership could revive Illinois Following years of fiscal mismanagement that has led to a crippling state budget, rising unemployment and record-high outmigration rates, Gov. Bruce Rauner laid out his agenda Feb. 4 for Illinois in the State of the State address. He wants to “make Illinois the most competitive and compassionate state in America.” Branding his initiatives as COMMUNITY “The Illinois Turnaround,” VOICE the governor stressed his Christine commitment to passing bold Radogno reforms that address revenue shortfalls, taxes, the state deficit, workers’ compensation, minimum wage, unemployment and education. It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on long-term solutions to the state’s problems. For years, Republicans have proposed fiscal initiatives that gained little traction in a Democrat-controlled state government. Now, we have a Republican governor who outlined a bold plan to advance an agenda that mirrors our proposals to grow jobs and stimulate economic growth. His plans to establish minority small business investment startups and job training programs, and to implement competitive tax rates to entice more businesses to Illinois, could provide a much-needed boost to Illinois. Gov. Rauner emphasized reforming state government to make it more “efficient and compassionate.” I am confident he will work with Republicans and Democrats to reverse the years of corruption and lack of transparency in the budget process. As a suburban resident, I know many property owners will share my interest in his plan to provide property tax relief. Gov. Rauner cited property tax rates as “one of the biggest impediments to growth.” I’m interested to learn how he plans to empower taxpayers to take control of their property tax obligations. Gov. Rauner stressed the importance of giving local governments the power to decide how to allocate their resources, whether they’re considering collective bargaining issues or government consolidation. This emphasis on local control could be a key component of “turning Illinois around.” Lastly, the governor touched on one of the most important topics that affects all Illinois, and that is education. He emphasized the need to invest more in technical and vocational training – giving students more opportunities for success, as well as providing families a choice in where they send their children to school. Illinoisans have been without a strong, capable leader to make hard decisions. Gov. Rauner has already showed signs of bipartisan leadership and I look forward to working with him.

Starting in 2016, seniors in Woodridge will have a new option for affordable housing. Rauner unveils broad agenda in State of State By KEVIN P. CRAVER | kcraver@shawmedia.com Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in his first State of the State address laid out a broad agenda to revitalize Illinois’ economy that focuses significantly on stripping the power and influence of labor unions. Rauner in his 40-minute speech to state lawmakers Feb. 4 called his proposals “bold” and “aggressive” but “necessary and very doable” to repair the state’s deep financial troubles, and make Illinois more competitive with other states. “The time is now for all of us, Republicans and Democrats, to do big things – the right things – for the people of our great state,” Rauner said. “Now is the time for bold and decisive action. It is make or break time for the Land of Lincoln.” But while Rauner preached the need for bipartisan cooperation to stop what he repeatedly called on the campaign trail the state’s downward spiral, he almost certainly will find a number of his proposals, especially those blunting organized labor, a very hard sell to Democratic lawmakers who hold House and Senate supermajorities. Among his top priorities for economic growth are implementing more significant workers’ compensation reform, tort reform, implementing true competitive bidding for public works projects while limiting prevailing wage requirements, and allowing local voters to decide by referendum whether or not local government employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment – Rauner dubbed the localized rightto-work areas “employee empowerment zones.” “Employee empowerment zones will increase jobs for

residents, increase economic activity for local businesses and generate more tax dollars for local governments. It’s a win-win-win proposal,” Rauner said. Rauner also seeks to limit organized labor’s influence by extending the existing ban on political contributions for businesses with state contracts to all organization with a collective bargaining agreement with state government, and organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds. In exchange for the business reforms, Rauner said he supports a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased in over seven years. While Rauner in his speech did not address the state’s $111 billion unfunded pension liability – a 2013 reform bill is awaiting an Illinois Supreme Court ruling regarding its constitutionality – his priorities list included a proposal to move state employees into a new tier of benefits or into 401(k)s while protecting the pension benefits they have accumulated to date. Another proposal seeks to give state government employees merit-based raises. A number of Rauner’s proposals are aimed at the local level, such as lowering the property tax burden on Illinois homeowners. Besides the right-to-work and prevailing wage reforms that he said will decrease local government’s

Rauner’s speech earned high praise from local Republican legislators and even received positive words from the other side of the aisle. Illinois Senate Republican

Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said she’s encouraged by Rauner’s early signs of bipartisan leadership. “It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on long-term solutions to the state’s problems,” she said. State Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, believes Illinois is now on a path to re-emerging as the “economic engine of the Midwest.” “Clearly Gov. Rauner was elected to make bold moves and take swift action to put Illinois back on the path to fiscal solvency and get our state’s economy going again,” Connelly said. Rauner’s commitment to government consolidation tapped into a major talking point for many local officials. State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, hopes the state can mirror the success witnessed in DuPage County. “The DuPage County model has achieved an estimated $100 million in taxpayer savings,” Sandack said, “and I hope to see that effort extended statewide so that taxpayers everywhere can experience tax relief.” State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged” by the governor’s pledge to consolidate units of government after she was part of the bipartisan effort in DuPage County. Conroy also agreed with Rauner’s focus on the state’s fiscal crisis. She said she’s committed to working with Republicans to pass a “fiscally responsible budget while preserving funding for education and other vital services.” “I look forward to hearing the specifics of Gov. Rauner’s plan and will continue to work with my colleagues in the House and Gov. Rauner to find balanced solutions to our state’s fiscal problems,” Conroy said.

“The time is now for all of us, Republicans and Democrats, to do big things – the right things – for the people of our great state. Now is the time for bold and decisive action. It is make or break time for the Land of Lincoln.” Gov. Bruce Rauner During State of the State address

costs, he wants a two-year freeze on property taxes and an increased emphasis on consolidating local units of government – Illinois at almost 7,000 has far more than any other state. Lawmakers will meet again in two weeks when Rauner delivers his proposed 2016 budget, which will give a more complete picture as to how he plans to pay for initiatives such as increased funding for K-12 education, and at the same time what needs to be cut. Besides a multi-billion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year beginning July 1. A much-criticized 2011 increase in the state income tax was allowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised. While Rauner said he wants to keep income taxes “low and competitive with other states” and keep the state’s flat tax over a progressive one based on income, he wants to extend the state sales tax to include a number of services. He likely will find pushback from members of his own Republican caucus, some of whom oppose any attempt to find more revenue over cutting spending.

POLICE WARN OF LATEST PHONE SCAM The Downers Grove Police Department would like to alert our citizens to the latest telephone scam. A citizen contacted the Crime Prevention Unit and advised that they received a suspicious phone call at their home. The resident checked caller ID before answering his phone and was surprised to see his own home phone number displayed. The resident answered the call, but the caller then hung up without speaking.

Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), caller ID spoofing is illegal if it is used with the intent of defrauding, causing harm, or wrongfully obtaining anything of value. Persons receiving these types of calls are encouraged to contact the FCC by phone (1-888-CALL-FCC) to file a complaint. As with any other suspicious phone call, never provide personal and/or financial information to any incoming phone call. If you receive a call, hang up, and call the financial institution or governmental agency directly via the phone number given on your banking statement or the agency’s website.

BUCKLE-UP YOUR VALENTINE The Downers Grove Police Department reminds you to "BuckleUp Your Valentine" during the holiday and throughout the year. Valentine's Day is about showing the ones you love how much you care about them. One easy way you can demonstrate your love is to buckle up and insist that everyone you love does the same anytime they are riding in a motor vehicle. Unrestrained or improperly restrained children riding in a motor vehicle are twice as likely to die or be severely injured in a crash. The single most important thing you can do to protect your children is to buckle them up properly, every trip, every time. Make sure your child safety seat is the right fit for your child and your vehicle. Downers Grove residents that need assistance installing their child safety seat can call Supervisor Tim Sembach at (630) 434-5636 to schedule an appointment with a certified child safety seat technician. On Valentine’s Day, and everyday – Buckle-Up Your Valentine.

BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

That was as big as making the shots.” Benet also maintained its shot at a conference title, as the Redwings remain one game behind first-place Notre Dame. “Every game at this time of year is a must win,” Heidkamp said. “Notre Dame is undefeated, and Marist, St. Viator and us all have one loss.” Benet shot just 14-of-39 from the field but was 7 of 16 in the second half, with four of those shots being 3-pointers. “We rely on each other,” Heidkamp said, “and tonight it was Danny’s night to pick us up in the second half.”

LISLE – Dan Sobolewski’s second-half shots kept alive Benet’s shot at a conference title. With the host Redwings trailing Marist 25-19 at halftime Friday, Sobolewski scored 12 of his game-high 16 points after the break as Benet (17-6, 5-1) rallied to a 45-38 win. “Their 1-3-1 zone was good and we weren’t attacking it the way we wanted to,” Sobolewski said of the first-half struggles. “We made a few switches, moving me to the corner and [James] Dockery up top. That got me some open looks and I was fortunate enough to knock them down.” A trio of Sobolewski 3-pointers during a just more than two-minute span of the third quarter turned a 25-22 deficit into a 32-29 lead the Redwings never relinquished. “Danny’s been a good shooter all year,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. “A major emphasis at the half was to come out with more aggressiveness and not just settle for taking jump shots. Danny made some 3s, but a lot of his 3s were kickouts where we were able to penetrate a little bit.” Colin Bonnett had carried Benet in the first half, scoring 10 of his 13 points before the break. Five points each by Sean Liszka (all in the fourth quarter) and Dockery (three steals) aided the Redwings’ attack, and Benet’s defense was another huge factor. Winters, Trojans thwart crosstown rival Mustangs

Downers Grove North center David Edwards shoots over an Oak Park River Forest defender Jan. 23 during a conference game. Edwards recorded his first career double-double Saturday in the Trojans’ win against rival Downers Grove South.

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North senior Peyton Winters received an unexpected ovation before Saturday’s rivalry game against Downers Grove South. With the lights dimmed in the DGN gym, Congressman Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton) took the court and surprised Winters by presenting her with a certificate recognizing her appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. “I have no doubt she will make her friends, family and our entire community proud at the U.S. Naval Academy,” said Roskam, who nominated Winters for the Naval Academy when she was going through the application process. “I look forward to hearing of her continued success on and off the basketball court.” “It definitely caught me off guard, I had no idea it was going to happen,” Winters said. “Once I saw him there, I caught on to what was happening. I was a little lost for words, it was a humbling experience and an amazing gesture.” But when the crosstown rivalry tipped off, Winters’ play spoke for itself. Coming off her first career triple-double (24 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocks) against Glenbard West on Thursday, Winters wreaked havoc early and often in the low post against Downers Grove South. The 6-foot-2 senior tallied six points and four blocks in the first quarter as the Trojans raced out to a 17-8 advantage and held on for a 43-34 victory. Matched up against 5-foot-8 Mustangs forward Kiera James, Winters and the Trojans limited Downers Grove South’s interior play, regularly forcing the visitors to settle for jump shots and increasing their lead to 28-12 by halftime. “You expect that type of dominant play from your seniors,” DGN head coach Stephan Bolt said. “The ball has to go into her and we have to get her touches. She did a great job of finishing today and being aggressive and going to the basket.” In the second half, the Trojans were able to answer after each Downers Grove South offensive outburst. The Mustangs opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit to 10 points before the Trojans ended the period on a 6-2 run of their own. Kasandra Rugienius and Addyson Wesolowski then drained back-toback 3s in the fourth quarter to pull

Downers Grove North prevails against South in matchup of crosstown rivals By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Downers Grove North’s Brigid Miller breaks through the Lemont defense and goes up for a shot Jan. 27 in a nonconference game.

Game breakdown Downers Grove North 43, Downers Grove South 34 DGN LEADER n Peyton Winters: 12 points, 9 blocks, 6 rebounds within seven, but it was too little, too late and DGN held on for a nine-point win. DGN guard Lauren Porcelli led all scorers with 14 points, Izzy Greenblatt had 10 points and Peyton Winters had 12 points and nine blocks Following a 74-62 victory against Hinsdale South on Friday, DGS head coach Lyndsie Long lamented that the Mustangs were out of sync early against their crosstown rival. “Our shots weren’t falling and we were rushing through our offense in the first half,” Long said. “It took a little longer than expected to get in the groove of the game and we just came up short.” Still, Friday’s win capped a 10-2 West Suburban Gold record and second-place conference finish for the Mustangs, who will host a West Suburban Crossover game against Hinsdale Central at 6 p.m. tonight before beginning playoff action next week. The Trojans will go on the road Wednesday for a crossover game against Hinsdale South.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Trojan boys put an end to Downers Grove South’s recent dominance on the hardcourt. For the first time since the 2007-08 season, Downers Grove North prevailed in a regular-season, crosstown rivalry game, defeating the Mustangs 66-53 on Saturday. DGN guard Jordon Kedrowski scored a game-high 24 points and center David Edwards recorded his first career double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds) as the Trojans turned a tightly contested first half into a comfortable victory. “The atmosphere was electric tonight, I didn’t really expect it to be that crazy,” Kedrowski said. “Just coming out to a packed gym with a bunch of Downers North and South fans is a really cool experience.” Both teams exchanged baskets in a frenetic first half that ended with Downers Grove North on top 16-13. But DGS quickly responded in the second frame, as a Denis Alibegovic 3-pointer gave the Mustangs their first lead. Kedrowski then seized momentum for the home team, knocking down consecutive treys before converting a three-point play that gave the Trojans a 25-17 advantage. “My teammates did a great job of finding me in open spots on the break,” Kedrowski said. “But credit Downers South, they are a hardworking group and did a great job of bottling us up after that.” Sophomore T.J. Clifford was the catalyst for the Mustangs’ ensuing run, sinking a game-tying 3 with 1:30 left in the second quarter then throwing down a furious left-handed dunk to give Downers Grove South a 32-30 halftime lead.

Game breakdown Downers Grove North 66, Downers Grove South 53 DGN LEADERS n Jordon Kedrowski: 24 points n David Edwards: 12 points, 11 rebounds DGS LEADER n Denis Alibegovic: 22 points But in the third quarter, the Trojans used their size and inside-out game to their advantage. Back-to-back baskets by Edwards opened the scoring in the second half and swung momentum in favor of the home team. The 6-foot-7 center then converted a three-point play early in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 49-42. “That was the most complete game I’ve seen Edwards play,” DGN head coach Jim Thomas said. “He was dominant on both sides of the ball and scored in double figures for the first time in his career.” A pair of Kedrowski 3s and several clutch free throws sealed the victory for the Trojans. Downers Grove North guard Myles Farley scored 12 points while Alibegovic paced the Mustangs with 22 points, 18 of which came from behind the 3-point arc. Both squads dropped conference games heading into the crosstown rivalry game. Downers Grove South lost to Hinsdale South 56-50 on Friday, while a buzzer-beating 3 propelled Glenbard West to a 54-53 win against Downers Grove North.

Downers Grove South’s Ahmir Hooks (top) wrestles Morton’s Edgar Grimaldo on Saturday, taking first place at 126 pounds in the Morton wrestling regional in Cicero.

A pair of Lisle wrestlers will participate in sectionals this weekend after winning regional titles Saturday. Drew Sonnefeldt came in first in the 120-pound class while 170-pound senior Jack Pawlowicz also won a regional crown. Jackson Beshears (126 pounds) and Joey Ventrella (138) also advanced to the sectional meet, which will be Saturday at Wilmington.

Downers Grove North

Class: 4A Seed: 12 Regional: Bolingbrook Sectional: Oswego East Opening game: 7:30 p.m. Mon-

day vs. Lockport or Plainfield North Outlook: The Trojans could be shorthanded when the postseason begins Monday. Leading scorer Jaida Green has been dealing with a stress fracture in her left leg and hasn’t played since a Jan. 27 game against Lemont. Additionally, Madison Farnsworth recently suffered a hand injury and is unlikely to suit up in the playoffs. Downers Grove North is

Downers Grove South’s Kasandra Rugienius drives to the hoop Jan. 12 during a home game against York. 13-12 and 4-8 in the West Suburban Silver with one win in its past four conference games. But the Trojans have strung together back-to-back wins against Glenbard West and Downers Grove South, as senior Peyton Winters and guard Lauren Porcelli have shouldered much of the offense in Green’s absence. The 12th-seeded Trojans open 4A postseason play with a favorable matchup against No. 21 seed Plainfield Central. Should DGN advance, the girls will face regional host and fifth-seeded Bolingbrook in the second round. Oswego East and top-seeded Benet loom in regional finals and sectional semifinals.

Downers Grove South

Class: 4A Seed: 6 Regional: Romeoville Sectional: Oswego East Opening game: 7 : 3 0 p . m .

Wednesday vs. Romeoville or Waubonsie Valley Outlook: One of the most improved teams in the area, Downers Grove South finished in second place in the West Suburban Gold with a 10-2 conference record. The Mustangs are led by four-year varsity player Ava Porlier, who is averaging more than 13 points per game, and senior Vashae Easley. Sophomores Kiera James, Kasandra Rugienius and Addyson Wesolowski have all matured into regular starters, adding scoring depth and a defensive presence.

DGS was awarded a No. 6 seed and a first-round bye and will play the winner of Romeoville (No. 11 seed) and Waubonsie Valley (No. 22 seed) in the second round. If the Mustangs make the regional finals, they will likely be trying to pull off an upset against third-seeded Oswego. Neuqua Valley, the No. 2 seed in the sectional, could face DGS in the sectional semis.

Lisle

Class: 2A Seed: 2 Regional: Aurora Christian Sectional: Lisle Opening game: 7:30 p.m. today

vs. Westmont Outlook: After an up and down start to the season, Lisle excelled in conference play by going 11-1 in the Interstate-Eight. The well-rounded Lions are led by seniors Sarah Mogensen and Kate Twaddle, while sophomore TyAnn Legrand-Melton and freshman Natalie Takahashi are proven scorers who can take over stretches of a game. Lisle received a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye and will face rival and third-seeded Westmont in the second round. If the Lions can defeat the Sentinels for a second time this season, the girls will likely play for a regional title against host Aurora Christian, one of four top seeds in the sectional bracket. Seton Academy, Cristo Rey Jesuit and John Hope are the other three No. 1 seeds.

WRR

CICERO – Both Downers Grove schools had wrestlers advance from the Morton regional Saturday, and now members of the Mustangs and Trojans will compete at the Downers Grove North sectional this weekend. Downers Grove South was second at the regional as Ahmir Hooks (126 pounds), Tyree Johnson (138) and Ryan Gurski (182) won regional titles, and Mark Leflore-Chapman (152), Ramy Abd (170) and Sergio Villalobos (195) also advanced to the sectional. Hooks, Johnson and Gurski qualified for sectionals last year, but none of them won a regional title. The DGN sectional has a number of top teams, so state spots will be hard to come by, but Hooks is hoping to embrace the underdog role. “It feels good,” Hooks said after winning the regional. “I just want to wrestle as hard as I can, cause an upset if I can. I have to try and play as much close as I can.” For Downers Grove North, Pat Walker’s title at 113 pounds was the highlight, but five Trojans in all advanced out of the regional. Freshman

Nate Cummings (106 pounds), sophomores Austin Maher (145) and Sky Arend (182) and senior E.J. Phillips (heavyweight) also qualified for the sectional meet. Walker’s title, which included a 9-0 win against Proviso West’s Jaleel Hollingsworth in the final, was his second regional title, giving him his third sectional appearance. Last year, he qualified for state at 106 pounds and went 2-2 at state. This year, he moved up to 113 pounds. Walker said his experience of getting to state last year will give him more confidence at this weekend’s Downers Grove North sectional. “I’m feeling pretty good,” Walker said. “It was a pretty good day.”

vs. Aurora East or Joliet West Outlook: Benet’s big three have powered the Redwings to a 25-3 overall record and have the team eyeing a run to the state final. Senior Emily Eshoo is one of the top scorers in the area, averaging 18.7 points per game, while forward Emily Schramek has a 15.7 pointsper-game average and junior Kathleen Doyle is scoring at a 12.8 points-per-game clip. The Redwings are the top seed in the Oswego East sectional and should have no trouble with either Aurora East or regional host Joliet West in the second round. The girls’ first big test will be either eighth-seeded Naperville Central or ninth-seeded Naperville North in the regional finals. Benet may then face fourth-seeded Oswego East, No. 5 seed Bolingbrook or upset-minded Downers Grove North in the sectional semifinals.
