ADOLESCENT VS. ELDERLY DENTAL PROBLEMS

MEDICAL EXPENSES

Q: Do dental issues get better or worse as you get older? A: Every stage of life has its challenges and opportunities. That applies to dental issues as well. Dental health doesn’t necessarily get worse as you age, particularly if you have been attentive to your teeth all your life. Adolescents, for instance, have to deal with gingivitis, the gum inflammation that some researchers think is a by-product of hormonal change at puberty or the result of a typical teenage diet and poor oral hygiene. They may also deal with appliances their parents opt for to straighten their teeth. The elderly, on the other hand, deal with changes like receding gums, a condition that leaves the cementum that covers each tooth’s root exposed. Hence the saying, “long in the tooth” for a person who is aging. The exposed part of the tooth is susceptible to decay and to abrasion from brushing. Older adults who have not consistently practiced optimal oral hygiene could also be dealing with the problem of lost teeth. In addition, seniors are also prone to a potentially serious problem with wrinkling around the mouth, a condition that stems from skin that does not contain as much water and fat as a younger person’s does. Every age presents its challenges when it comes to oral health. The best way to be prepared for these challenges is to visit your dentist regularly and practice good oral hygiene all through your life.

could be important deductions for 2014. Since our out-of-pocked medical costs keep rising (and our incomes are less due to lower interest rates), you should check your expenses, including: • Medicare insurance and the drug premium • Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not pretax) or deducted from your pension and Cobra costs • Non reimbursed medical and especially dental costs • prescription drugs • hearing aids and batteries • medical mileage @ 23.5 cents/mile • long-term care insurance

While medical expenses are only deductible over 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over 10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizing this year since their medical costs plus real estate taxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add up to more than their standard deduction.

In 2014, 31 businesses opened in Woodridge, but 35 also closed. Zawila said the opening and closing of businesses is just one factor in evaluating economic development. “We’ve had some great vacancy numbers, he said. Seven of the 31 new businesses that opened in 2014 are industrial, and the rest are retail or service businesses.

WOODRIDGE – 2014 saw new businesses and fewer industrial and office vacancies in Woodridge, as staff continued efforts to grow economic development in the village. In 2014, Art Van Furniture, a 68,000-square-foot store at Boughton Road and Woodward Avenue, opened its doors to the community, as did Hobby Lobby at Centerpointe Shopping Center where Sports Authority used to be. “Woodridge is unique in that we’ve been promoting that Woodridge is a business-friendly community, Community Development Director Michael Mays said. Staff has been working on promoting outreach and economic development on the village’s website, said Mays, explaining it’s also important to talk with the businesses in town about what is working and what isn’t working and make sure they know the village is a resource for them. Woodridge had a 4.9-percent vacancy rate in industrial space toward the end of 2014, which is down from a 6-percent vacancy rate in 2013. The office vacancy rate also decreased from 19.8 percent in 2013 to 13 percent in 2014. However, the retail vacancy rate grew in 2014 to 10 percent from 6.2 percent in 2013. Village Planner Jason Zawila said the 2014 rate would have been 5.47 percent if Dominick’s had not closed at the end of 2013.

economic development, and being located in the village makes his store easily accessible off of Interstate 355. “The demographics of the community seem to fit our products, Hasan said. In addition to new businesses opening, many restaurants, including Clara’s Restaurant, Woodridge Caffe and Wendy’s, also completed remodeling projects. Since 2007, Woodridge saw a net gain of about 68,800 square feet of retail, showing significant improvement after the recession. Woodridge staff now is promoting the vacant Dominick’s location to grocery users and general retail, according to a village report. “Woodridge is working with several other DuPage communities to promote the vacant Dominick’s stores, said Mays. The Woodridge Dominick’s site is at 63rd Street and I-355. Another project for 2015 is filling a 9,000-square-foot retail site at the southwest corner of Boughton Road and Woodward Avenue. A tanning salon is one business planned for that site, Mays said. The village continued its trend of a growing number of new construction for single-family homes in 2014 with 30 permits issued, compared to 27 permits the previous year. By 2019, the village predicts close to 300 additional family homes will be built. “It’s been very encouraging in terms of developer interest, said Mays, referring to housing, industrial and retail opportunities for the village.

Council votes down electronic message board signs By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – During its meeting Feb. 1, the village council opted not to pass a motion to allow electronic message board signs, ending Community High School District 99’s pursuit of the signs at North and South high schools. The school district has been working with the village to begin the application process to rezone its two school properties from residential to campus-scale institutional and public, or INP-2, but also sought a text amendment to the zoning ordinance to permit the signs. The ordinance prohibits electronic message board signs in all zoning districts, including INP-2. According to village documents, the INP-2 district was designed to accommodate development of properties larger than 4 acres for public, civic and institutional use. The only property zoned INP-2 in the village is the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital campus. Village documents indicate other properties that could be eligible for INP-2

“I have concerns about digital signs anywhere in the village, but I am not completely closed to this idea. I am going to be supporting this.” David Olsen Commissioner

zoning include: District 99 properties, Downers Grove Grade School District 58 properties, the Midwestern University campus and park district, forest preserve and village properties. The idea of electronic message board signs in the village was cause for concern among many members of the council. “I am not comfortable to opening this to residents,” said Commissioner Greg Hose, who expressed worry for community members living in proximity to properties affected by the proposed amendment. Commissioner Geoff Neustadt also said he didn’t feel the signs were right for Downers Grove.

Residents who were unable to attend the meeting submitted remarks online via the village website. Of the 11 remarks submitted, the majority supported the district’s appeal for electronic signage. Two members of the public spoke during the meeting, one in favor of the signs and one against. “I have concerns about digital signs anywhere in the village, but I am not completely closed to this idea,” Commissioner David Olsen said. “I am going to be supporting this.” Superintendent Mark McDonald acknowledged the school district’s desire for electronic message board signs is separate from its pursuit of INP-2 zoning, and said before the council’s Feb. 3

meeting, the district believed only Good Samaritan and Midwestern University, in addition to North and South high schools, were eligible for INP-2 zoning. McDonald said the district acknowledges the text amendment question is different if applied to each school and park district building in Downers Grove. “I also want to note that at the Feb. 3 meeting, District 99 showed examples of digital signage at Naperville Central and Hinsdale Central high schools,” McDonald said. “Those examples were intended to be examples of comparable high schools, but in no way was our intent to offer council a specific sign for approval, nor did we discuss specific digital technology available, nor a specific sign for review by the council.” The intent was to proceed with a text amendment that would provide parameters, he said. McDonald said while he was disappointed with the council’s vote, he respected its decision. “We will continue to go forward with INP-2 zoning with the village,” he said. The motion failed 4-3.

Legislators respond to COD buyout of Breuder By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com Illinois Senate Democrats announced the formation of a new subcommittee to investigate executive compensation at public institutions in a news release Feb. 11. The announcement comes in the wake of the fallout following the approval of a massive severance package for Col- Robert lege of DuPage President Breuder Robert Breuder. The subcommittee will be part of the Senate Higher Education Committee and will steer reform efforts and ensure tuition and tax dollars are used responsibly. It will have three members: Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge; and a Republican who has yet to be selected, according to John Patterson, director of communications for the Illinois Senate Democrats. “Taxpayers are demanding to know how we compensate administrators, why we are compensating them and what safeguards we can put in place to end the type of abuses we’ve recently

“This money could be better spent on providing an affordable, world-class-college education for students. It could be used to offer much needed tuition relief for families. Taxpayers cannot afford to pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting club memberships and other lavish perks for public servants.” Dan Kotowski D-Park Ridge seen,” Cunningham, who will head the subcommittee, said in the release. The issue was thrust into the spotlight when the College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to approve a $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who will retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. The college will also name its new Homeland Security Education Center after him. The vote drew outrage from the public, as 400 people attended a board meeting in January about the severance package. Board Chairwoman Erin Birt said at the meeting the board quantified 1.5 years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to the agreement. “This money could be better spent

on providing an affordable, world-classcollege education for students. It could be used to offer much needed tuition relief for families,” said Kotowski in the release. “Taxpayers cannot afford to pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting club memberships and other lavish perks for public servants.” Several local representatives are looking at legislation regarding Breuder’s buyout and others want to prevent similar severance packages in the future. Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filed two resolutions related to the buyout. The first is a request for the Illinois Auditor General to perform an audit of the college’s state funding from the past three fiscal years. After Ives’ re-

quest, the college asked the auditor general to move forward with the audit prior to receiving legislative approval. Ives also is sponsoring a resolution urging trustees to reconsider the buyout and the building naming. At the January meeting, several members of the public expressed an interest in naming the building after Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native awarded the Medal of Honor after dying in combat in Afghanistan. Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced earlier this month he would introduce legislation known as the Breuder Rule, which would ban excessive severance packages at public institutions. At a House Republicans news conference after the buyout was approved, Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, announced he would pursue legislation banning the use of state money in such severance packages. At the news conference, legislators also announced other possible laws including cuts in state funding for the college and reductions in the length of board trustees’ terms, which are currently six years. When reached for comment, college spokesman Joe Moore declined.

“As I’ve said, we need to grow our way out of our problems,” he said. “We can’t just cut our way out of our problems. Purely cutting alone without structural, pro-growth reform won’t get us there.” Sanguinetti said the governor would appoint 15 representatives from across the state to the task force in the next month. The group will lead a study to determine which agencies and unfunded mandates to recommend the governor examine. The task force wil be required to submit its findings to the governor and the General Assembly by Dec. 31, at which time it will be dissolved, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Illinois averages nearly 54 units of local government per 100,000 residents, Sanguinetti said. She said too many layers of local government aids corruption and heightens taxes. Consolidation efforts will be a big part of the future of Illinois, according to Sanguinetti. “Every dollar we save is a dollar that goes back into the pocketbooks of our taxpayers,” she said.

Government consolidation, DuPage style, may be coming to counties across the state. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Executive Order 15-15 to form the new Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandate Task Force headed by Wheaton resident and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti during a press conference Friday at the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst. Rauner called it an “exciting step towards turning our state around.” “We need to encourage the streamlining of local governments and of school districts to reduce costs and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” he said. “The [task force] will get the conversation started on how to streamline [and] end duplicative services and improve efficiency.” Rauner previously has praised consolidation efforts in DuPage, most notably in his State of the State address Feb. 4. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who said he will play a leadership role in the task force, spoke

Board considers dissolving DuPage Fair & Exposition Authority By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The latest DuPage County consolidation effort may funnel some much-needed cash into the hands of the County Fairgrounds. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin confirmed the county was looking at dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority. The organization is charged with receiving and distributing annual payments from the Illinois Department of Agriculture to the DuPage Fair Association to put on the five-day summer county fair. Cronin said the authority was an unnecessary layer of government. “I always was prepared to dissolve the authority, but we wanted to make sure there was a clearer picture about the condition of the buildings and what the future of the fair might be,” he said. The Fair Association’s lease for the grounds is up in 2020, which has led county officials to look into what they should do with the property and fair. The county recently received a report detailing suggestions for the future of the fairgrounds as well as more than 300 building code violations on its grounds. Many of the violations have already been addressed, DuPage County Fair Association Treasurer Jim McGuire said in January, but work remained. Should the authority be dissolved, the Fair Association would likely receive the about $240,000 the authority had in reserves as well as be the $204,000 the authority receives from the Department of Agriculture each year. County Board member Jim Zay publicly brought up the idea during a Feb. 10 County Board meeting after speaking to Cronin about it, Zay said. “We’re the only county in the state that has a fair authority and a fair association, every other county has a fair association,” he said. “So why do we need that extra layer? We don’t.” Mike Formento, chairman of the authority, said he supported shutting down the body. Originally, the authority was set up in the 1980s to be a watchdog of sorts over the money, eventually take over the fair and also eventually accumulate dollars for future real estate development. The real estate angle never

Raising expectations with PARCC tests is good for students Standardized testing is changing dramatically in Illinois. Out are the old, familiar tests; they are replaced with the new PARCC tests – which stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. PARCC will measure how well students meet the state’s new, more demanding standards known as Common Core State Standards. COMMUNITY By state and federal VOICE mandate, District 99 must Gina issue the test to students this spring. Ziccardi Not everyone is excited about the PARCC tests. For example, administering the test poses a variety of challenges. The assessments will be computer-based, which creates some logistical hurdles for us – and a departure from the pencil-and-paper tests that students are accustomed to taking. Also, assessments will be given over nine days, for two hours each day. That’s a lot of time, and we’re adjusting schedules to try to minimize the disruption and stress to students. Despite the obstacles, we believe that the PARCC tests better reflects our curriculum than previous tests ever could. For example, for English questions, students must read multiple passages carefully, pull out key ideas and evidence and then write persuasive arguments. For math problems, students must show their work and write their reasoning. Students must synthesize information, which is a more complex task than anything we’ve asked students to do before on a standardized test. But it’s what teachers ask them to do all the time in class, and so we know there is value in it. We anticipate the results of the PARCC tests will help our teachers to make better informed decisions about their instruction. By analyzing where our students succeed (and where they fall short), we will be able to adapt lesson plans, increase student understanding and create new measures of accountability for ourselves. District 99 has been at the forefront of adapting our curriculum to align with the more rigorous standards, and we’ve seen the positive impact on student learning. Raising our expectations of what students are capable of achieving isn’t easy, but we know that it is good for students.

A first-time, Benedictine University event provided a colorful glimpse into Native American culture. The Winter Traditional Powwow featured intertribal singing and dancing, native food, cultural presentations and an arts marketplace. The push for some kind of intervention in the Robert Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is to receive. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening. Do better next time

Regarding the recent snow removal effort by the village of Downers Grove: The people in charge, including the mayor and anyone up for re-election, would be wise to familiarize themselves with the story of Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic and the blizzard of 1979. Remember that something as simple as a bad snowfall could be your downfall as an elected official. Please do a better job next time.

Start COD building name petition

I just read the article from the person who suggested that the Homeland Security Education Center at [College of DuPage] be named after Sgt. Robert Miller, who was a Medal of Honor recipient, instead of the outgoing president. I wish that person would initiate a petition and get publicity on that. He or she should call back in and tell people where to go to sign this petition. It’s a worthy reason to change the name.

U.S. needs to take action against terrorists groups

The murder of American hostages by Muslim extremists is terrible. How does the U.S.A. stop this? First, imagine how a President Roosevelt, Eisenhower or Reagan might have responded to such murders. Immediate carpet bombing of manufacturing centers and terrorist enclaves is a good guess. With today’s technology, enhanced security and pin-point retaliatory capability, a terrorist group would be certain of self-destruction, ordered by presidents who cared more about the safety of

Did you know that Elmhurst has seven “municipal parking holidays” that include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas? I live on Singer Avenue in Lemont. Could the village please put up a sign on the corner of Singer and Peiffer, the 900 block of Singer, stating, “No overnight parking. Parking for residents only,” so that we the people who live on Singer can park in front of our own houses? Why can’t the people from the apartment house park on both sides of Peiffer Street, and why don’t they have village stickers?

Check speeders on Frontage Road in Lemont

This is a response to a Feb. 6 Sound Off about “Don’t use church for speed trap.” I say good for Lemont police for possibly preventing an accident. If that’s where they have to sit and catch the speeders, good for them, and if the person didn’t like it, it’s probably because they’re speeding through there. I wish somebody would sit on the Frontage Road. They use the Frontage Road from Lemont Road to Woodward as an alternate 355. They speed through here; they drop garbage. I’m paying taxes, but there’s no one ever sitting and checking the speeders here.

What happened to the children of Jackie Robinson West is shameful. Those children played their best. They did everything they were supposed to do. The adults let them down! I hope those coaches are banned from ever coaching again. To them, it was more important to win than show the boys that honesty and integrity are what counts. Imagine the hurt the coaches have caused these boys. I just hope the boys can see this for what it is and not let it destroy their hopes and dreams.

I do understand you have to put snow somewhere – is the handicap spot between those two businesses. I am thinking now, you’re putting people on snow and ice, having to walk a distance with a handicap. I’ve seen elderly people almost fall. Second winter in a row, there’s a million spots that they can use to put the snow, but they pick the one handicap spot in that whole area, and that’s just a grave concern to me.

Cronin said the issue had been a concern for years, and it was time for a serious look. tion district in spring 2014. “We’ve been concerned about the buildings and the economic viability of the fair as it currently exists for some time now – it all seems to be coming together,” he said. He believed the board could take action as soon as August after ensuring the county or association could still receive the state funds. While he hoped the fair could continue, Formento said he wasn’t sure if the Department of Agriculture would continue its funding due to the state’s economic problems. Should that dry up, the fact the association’s lease was up soon may not matter as it would be hard to continue the fair in its current form. “It would be regrettable to see the fair go away, but like all things that may end up being the alternative that may be available,” he said.

ton Winters recorded her third double-double in four games with 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Although the Trojans were again without leading scorer Jaida Green, who will likely miss the remainder of the season with a stress fracture in her left leg, Downers Grove North received contributions from up and down the lineup Monday, enabling the team to run away with the victory. “Anytime you are missing 18 points per game from your leading scorer, your offense is going to take a hit and it took us a few games to adjust,” Bolt said. “But it gives other kids a chance to step up and make some plays. “We just have to share the ball; our team mentality is to find teammates shots. Make it easy on the team and know when to pass up OK shots for great shots. We need to take great shots every single time down the floor.” Porcelli led all scorers with 15 points while Colleen Miller finished with 12 points. Downers Grove North advanced to a regional semifinal matchup against Bolingbrook on Tuesday. The winner will play Oswego East or Plainfield North on Thursday for the regional title.

BOLINGBROOK – Downers Grove North’s girls basketball team notched a fourth-quarter shutout during a dominant defensive performance in the regional quarterfinals game against Plainfield Central. The Trojans held Plainfield Central to 11 points or less in every quarter, keeping the opposing offense off the scoreboard for the final eight minutes of a 54-22 victory in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. “We rely on our defense to make other team’s uncomfortable and set the tone for our offense,” said DGN guard Lauren Porcelli. “We got a couple stops early in the fourth quarter, and I think that gave us a boost on offense and helped us go on a run.” Ahead 34-22 going into the final frame, Trojans guard Brigid Miller nailed backto-back 3-pointers from the right wing. On an ensuing offensive set, Porcelli then split the Plainfield Central defense, drawing a foul before sinking a right-handed layup. She finished off the three-point play and extended the lead to 43-22. The Trojan’s fourth-quarter starting lineup scored another nine unanswered points before head coach Stephan Bolt unloaded the bench with about three minutes left in the game. “The Plainfield Central zone defense was giving us some trouble early, but we were then able to work the ball inside and kick it out to the Millers, who hit some big 3-pointers,” Bolt said. Sophomore twins Brigid and Colleen Miller combined for five 3-pointers, while Pey-

Kedrowski excels with new Downers Grove North team By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Jordon Kedrowski has taken his game to another level in his only season on Downers Grove North boys basketball team. The senior, who transferred from Neuqua Valley to DGN at the start of the school year, quickly established himself as the Trojans’ most consistent scorer, and through 19 games he leads the team in points per game (12.4) and 3-pointers (109). Additionally, the 6-foot-2 guard is the team’s primary ball handler and has matured into an offensive catalyst, leading area teams with a 5.7 assist-per-game average. “The transition has gone pretty smooth, and it’s helped that the coaches implemented a new offense this season, so the rest of the team was learning a new system as well,” Kedrowski said. “We came in and had a lot great practices to start the season. I credit my teammates for that, they were a huge help.” Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com Kedrowski also attributes Downers Grove North’s Jordon Kedrowski works the ball around the his success to the Downers York defense Thursday during a conference game in Downers Grove. Grove North coaching staff,

especially head coach Jim Thomas, whose tough love approach has helped him mature as a player and a person. “He’s hard on me, he gets on me a lot in practice,” Kedrowski said. “But I think it’s because he sees potential in me; he knows I want to play at the next level and he just wants me at my best on every single play. He’s a fantastic coach, I’ve learned so much from him that goes beyond basketball.” Thomas’ tutelage of Kedrowski goes back farther than this basketball season. The coach first took Kedrowski under his wing when the guard joined his Mercury Elite AAU team this past spring. “We had some really nice players on that team, and Kedrowski was the point guard that set up the offense and distributed the basketball,” Thomas said. “So he’s really taken on a new role with this team [Downers Grove North]. He’s still a great passer, but he’s shown that he’s an effective scorer, too.” Like Thomas, who played guard for Augustana College, Kedrowski hopes to contin-

Lisle girls basketball team’s season ends in regional semifinals By ALEX SOULIER

Game breakdown

asoulier@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Lisle girls basketball season ended in the regional semifinals Thursday against Westmont. Facing their rival in Class 2A Aurora regional semifinals, the Lions fought back from a 23-18 halftime deficit to take a third quarter lead, but could not hang on in the waning minutes of the game, as Westmont prevailed 43-40. In the first half, Westmont out-hustled Lisle, winning battles for loose balls and rebounds. But the second-seeded Lions began the second half with four-straight points on baskets from Kate Twaddle and Sarah Mogensen. When Lisle took its first lead of the game on a four-point play by freshman Natalie Takahashi with less than three minutes to play in the third quarter, it

we’ve preached since day one are defense and rebounding, and we didn’t do those two things very well tonight,” Lisle head coach Nick Balaban said. “They took it to us on the boards tonight, and that was the dif-

ference. They were getting rebounds off of missed free throws and they were getting second and third opportunities.” Westmont’s Mara Casper sunk a three with 20 seconds left in the game to give the underdogs a 43-40 lead. Lisle had chances to tie on two ensuing possessions, but could not muster another comeback. “We’ve got six seniors who aren’t feeling good right now and I told them I was proud of them and I loved them,” Lisle head coach Balaban said. “We went through a lot this year to get to this point. I’m sure we would have liked to ad-

vance and had an opportunity to play in the regional championship, but tonight they were the better team and they won the game.” After an up-and-down start to the season, Lisle ended the year with a 19-10 overall record, going 10-1 in the Interstate Eight and earning a share of the conference championship. The team will say goodbye to its six seniors, Sarah Mogensen, Monifah Davis, Kate Twaddle, Kelsey Kretman, Leah Reeves and Courtney O’Connell. Freshman point guard Natalie Takahashi had a breakout season for the Lions, averaging 7.4 points per game and nearly three rebounds per game, and will return to the team next season. Sophomore TyAnn LeGrand-Melton (8.1 points per game) and juniors Sammi Maas and Melissa Ericson are also expected to be back.

Johnson, Walker and Phillips qualify for wrestling state final DOWNERS GROVE – Tyree Johnson crossed one wrestling goal off his list Saturday. Then he immediately made a new one. The Downers Grove South junior won three consecutive backdraw matches at the Downers Grove North sectional tournament and finished fourth at 138 pounds to lock up his first state tournament berth. “It feels good,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been down state in my three years, and I feel like when I get down there I should accomplish my goal and place top-5 in the state.” While this will be Johnson’s first trip to state, he has a good idea of what to expect when the tourney begins Thursday and how best to prepare for success. “Morning practices, more intense practices, keeping my conditioning up and stay focused,” Johnson said. “I’m expecting really tough competition.” Downers Grove North’s Pat Walker locked up his second-straight state tournament berth with a 2-0 win in a backdraw semifinal at 113 pounds, then improved his state seeding with

an 8-3 win in the third-place match. “It feels pretty good,” Walker said of getting back to state. “I just know what’s going to happen [at state] and I know what to expect.” North’s E.J. Phillips won his first three sectional matches to reach the finals at 285, where he finished second while earning his first trip to the state tournament. The Trojans also saw Sky Arend, Nate Cummins and Austin Maher compete at the sectional but come up short of state berths. Ramy And, Ryan Gurski, Ahmir Hooks, Mark Leflore-Chapman and Sergio Villalobos were in the same boat for the Mustangs.

HINSDALE – Downers Grove North gymnast Ellia Leger had to wait a long time to perform her uneven bars routine Feb. 11 at the Hinsdale Central sectional. But the patience paid off as Leger ended an even longer wait – her school’s 10-year drought between state qualifiers. The senior was the last competitor on bars and she rocked her set for a 9.35 score, good enough for fourth place and an automatic berth at the state meet at Palatine High School. Leger’s bars routine completed her sectional meet and also allowed her to advance to state in the all-around competition. Her 36.775 was good for fifth place. “I’m just really excited that all my hard work that I’ve [put] in the past year has paid off,” Leger said. “I was actually really, really anxious before I was going [on bars] because I knew what I had to get and what I had to do. I just really wanted to go out there and do the best routine that I could.” Leger, who also qualified on balance beam with a fourth-place score of 9.15, is the first Downers North gymnast to qualify for state since Kathy Zeles and Maggie Bronny went in 2005. Leger is North’s first allaround qualifier since Krista Lewis

WRR

and Casey Panko in 2003. “I was hoping for bars and I wasn’t really expecting to make beam and allaround,” Leger said. “I just couldn’t be more excited and happy.” Downers Grove South sophomore Kayla Carlson was in a similar mood after qualifying for the first time. She stuck her Yurchenko vault for a career-high 9.45, good enough for fifth and the final automatic bid. “I’m really excited to go and never thought I’d be able to do it,” Carlson said. “But I listened to my coaches. They’ve been telling me I could do it all year.” Carlson achieved tremendous height on the Yurchenko, the toughest vault being done at the high school level, and knew right away she was going to stick it. “I’ve seen videos [of it] and still can’t believe it,” said Carlson, who earned an at-large state berth in the all-around, where she finished eighth with 36.25, and beam. “I could feel it while I was doing it I knew it was a good one and I was just happy with that.” Downers Grove North, which was making its first sectional appearance since 2005, finished fifth in the team standings with 138.075 points, while Downers Grove South brought up the rear of the six-team field with 136.95. “I have a lot of young kids on the team,” Downers North coach Linda
