Florence Yung, a student at Naperville North High School, is one of several teens who volunteered to plant a butterfly garden May 15 at Lisle Library District, 777 Front St. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife sent the library a packet of milkweed seeds to start the garden. Monarch populations have been rapidly declining throughout North America for a variety of reasons, including the disappearance of milkweed plants, according to the library’s website. Q: What are some good practices for a person wearing an orthodontic appliance? A: The first good practice is to follow explicitly the instructions given you by your dentist or orthodontist. But some general do’s and don’ts would include these: • Handle and store your appliances with care, and keep them in a safe place. For some reason, dogs find orthodontic appliances and dentures irresistible.

Premium Money Market

• If you wear a removable appliance, take it out before swimming. • Whether they’re permanent or removable, braces readily trap food particles. Try to brush your teeth after every meal and snack. When brushing, pay particular attention to the danger zone between the appliance and the gum line. If you wear a removable appliance, take it out and clean it.

For a limited time, earn a premium rate on balances up to $100,000.

• If your braces are permanent, protect them and your mouth with a mouth guard when playing a sport. • Avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage appliances. Eating hard-crusted bread, nuts or bagels, and gnawing on bones are not advisable. Sweets, like caramel and chewing gum, sugarless or not, are a bad idea. As mentioned above, follow instructions to the letter, particularly regarding the number of hours you should wear your appliance and/or headgear. The more closely you follow the instructions, the sooner you’ll reach your goal.

Forest preserve district suspends sales of horses DuPage County district plans horse retirement proposal soon By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com

The fate of a pair of former DuPage County horses remains unknown, but the forest preserve district is taking steps to care for its aged equines moving forward. In a May 5 board of commissioners meeting, several attendees called the sale of a pair of longtime Kline Creek Farm horses, Buddy, 27, and Annie, 25, into question. Many asked whether the duo had been sold to “kill buyers,” who buy horses at auctions like the one Annie and Buddy were taken to in March in Topeka, Ind., and send them to slaughterhouses. “We as a board have heard their concerns,” board President Joseph Cantore said during a May 19 meeting. The district has yet to confirm the location of the two horses, district Director of Communications Susan Olafson said May 20. Cantore said he placed a moratorium on the sale of horses without board approval and directed staff to create a more holistic policy on what the district does with aging and retired horses. The board also unanimously voted to extend the policy for horses at the Danada Equestrian Center requiring anyone interested in adopting a horse go through an application procedure to apply districtwide. Robert Lahey, the district’s director of community services and education, said during the May 19 meeting the district hoped to have a policy proposal for horse retirement in the next 100 days or so. Commissioner Linda Painter said she appreciated the public comment that brought the issue to the board’s attention. “I think this is a good example that we do listen to what the concerns are of the public,” she said.

Supportive housing ends homelessness Now’s the time to revel in OUR VIEW

nice weather, great events

In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Shortsleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • Lemont Beer Fest on June 6 • Lemont’s Sunset Soiree Concert Series during June, July and August • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on June 13 and 14 • Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove

from June 25 to 28 • Lemont’s Heritage Fest on July 11 • Taste of Westmont from July 9 to 12 • DarienFest from Sept. 11 to 13 You can find a lot more than these in our online calendar at planitlife.com. These are much more than backup plans for when your out-of-town plans fall through. Many of these events will draw folks from out of the area to our towns. It’s an opportunity for you to get out into your community, mingle with your neighbors, maybe stumble across some aspect of your own hometown that you’d never noticed before. And, incidentally, patronizing local events is a great way to vote with your dollars for local businesses and groups. Any time you can spend a few bucks locally, you’re helping to keep your local community vibrant and thriving. Just one more way it benefits you. By fall, the number of great events will begin to dwindle again, holidays aside. There will come a weekend when you’re stuck inside, listening to the winds howl, knowing that even if there was some great event going on somewhere, you’d rather not brave the elements. Don’t let yourself regret that you passed up a chance to take advantage while the weather was nice.

Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

Cleveland stopped smiling in 1987. He was working a steady job and had been there for five years when one day he came home to the worst news a parent can receive. Cleveland’s 1-year-old son had been beaten to death by his baby sitter. “I still feel the chill down COMMUNITY my spine every time I think VOICE about it,” Cleveland said. Carol Unable to cope, he stopped caring about his life. Simler “I became angry and mad at the world. I turned to alcohol and drugs, which caused me to lose everything – my home, my family – and I ended up in prison. I could not handle the pain and walked around homeless for many years.” Cleveland said the turning point in his life was DuPagePads. In addition to basic needs like food and shelter, DuPagePads connected him with a case manager who helped him find counseling to deal with his addictions and inner anger while obtaining the needed medication to stay in a stable mental state. Cleveland is now clean; no drugs or alcohol. He was reunited with his children and said the best day of his life was the day he opened the door to his DuPagePads Supportive Housing apartment. “I did not believe this could be my life again.” Last year, DuPagePads Supportive Housing program served 115 individuals, including 34 children. As a result of continued supportive services, 88 percent of those individuals have had a place to call home for a year or longer. Homelessness often causes illnesses and makes existing mental and physical illnesses worse. Supportive Housing apartments, such as Cleveland’s, improve physical and mental health. This in turn reduces the need for expensive inpatient mental health care and hospitalization. Now that Cleveland is in housing and his health has stabilized, he is no longer using emergency rooms or the criminal justice system, which are expensive for taxpayers. More affordable than housing in state hospitals, prisons or nursing homes, Supportive Housing is an investment in our community. With the proposed state budget cuts, funding for this program is in jeopardy. To learn about this issue, visit dupagepads.org. As Cleveland can attest, Supportive Housing ends homelessness. “DuPagePads cared about me. They wanted me to get better, for myself and for my other children. My case managers made me want to be a better person.” “Housing is such a blessing. I feel good about providing a home for my children to visit. One of the biggest changes that people notice about me is that I now smile – life is good now. I want to thank DuPagePads for saving my life.”

In regard to the writer that wants to thank the College of DuPage trustees [Kim] Savage and [Nancy] Svoboda for the service to the College of DuPage, you must kidding! ‌ These two were instrumental in creating the chaos currently taking place, which includes wasteful taxpayer money, embarrassing publicity, investigations into possible wasteful and illegal spending matters by the administration and the very board of trustees ‌ they were part of. Not to mention patterns of behavior by the very president they chose and supported. May I suggest to anyone else that feels they need to thank these individuals and others who served on the board before this last election that they just fade away with their tails between their legs along with Mr. [Robert] Breuder.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees hosts a meeting May 21, where votes were taken on almost 20 individual items.

Board shifts power through policy changes and more By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.

1. Board gives itself more power

The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president • Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures • Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed-session recordings. The trustees also greenlighted the provision of board

office space and the requirement of board approval for any trustee reimbursements exceeding $335 in any fiscal year and empowered its members to become a more influential part of the longrange planning process. “We are charged with policy here on this board,” Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said. “Our job is to give a structure. And we pass on the implementation of that to the president and the president in turn creates policies with staff and faculty, and in the past, … the board has not been able to reach down and correct problems as readily as needed.”

2. Consent agenda axed

Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t planned to have been discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about all but two topics on the eight-item consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for the items, calling specifically for public bidding informa-

tion and program goals in each purchase proposal. She said she was surprised staff hadn’t been asked for the requested details before and that there was a “learning curve” for staff to adjust to the new postelection board. “I would hope that the administration is going to be more detailed in the information they give not just merely to the trustees but to the public … so that everybody has the ability to view this information in advance and can genuinely vet the decisions that the administration is making,” she said.

4. Birt (mostly) stonewalls board

3. No long-range plan?

5. Guns, guns, guns

While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future. However, Hamilton urged her fellow trustees to consider not moving forward with a plan until after the school implemented other policy changes and went through a state policy and financial audit. “I believe it is not the time to adopt it,” she said. “I, for one, do not envision any further development of a plan until many open questions at COD are resolved. Our strategic plan for the time being has to be identify, repair and transform.”

Former board chairwoman Birt largely continued her streak of opposition. Before leaving the meeting early because of a schedule conflict, she voted against or abstained from nearly all the items the board considered. Birt also was not in attendance for the May 14 special meeting because of a schedule conflict and led fellow returning trustees Joseph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire in a uniform no-vote protest April 30, saying the agenda was compiled without the consent of the entire board. One of the items taken off the consent agenda was the purchase of $31,213.72 for 59 firearms for the Homeland Security Training Institute. Although some trustees and members of the public called the pricing into question, institute Associate Dean Thomas Brady said staff requested several “brandname” guns – 24 Colt M4 carbines and 24 Glock .40-caliber handguns – to align with what many local law enforcement officers use, as well as 11 more Smith & Wesson handguns for public use at the institute gun range. The motion passed 4-3, with Birt, Mazzochi and Napolitano against, and the latter two citing spending as a concern.

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. It’s stressful and difficult for a love one to accept that they need more help with daily activities. They often feel a sense of loss. They’re experiencing loss of independence, loss of their home, and loss of the ability to perform basic tasks. It’s best to respect these new emotions, and be sympathetic to their situation. Fear of the unknown can intensify any other emotions they have. Over time, as they adjust, these emotions often turn to joy and excitement as they experience how beneficial community life can be. Discover more about what to expect during a transition and important questions to ask the communities you’re considering. We’ve put together a free guide called: “7 Questions to Ask When Screening Senior Living Communities - and Two Points to Consider Before Making Your Final Decision”. It’s an unbiased guide to help. Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story

f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

It is recommended that anyone with a family history of hearing issues schedule a check-up. orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”

Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

GAME REPORT RED STARS VS. FC KANSAS CITY SAT. MAY 23

RED STARS: 2

KANSAS CITY: 1

Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs

Copyright Daniel Bartel

Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The ball was met inside the penalty are by rookie Huerta, who redirected it through traffic and inside the left post courtesy of an exquisite touch with her right foot. Huerta’s fifth strike of the season sent the reigning NWSL Player of the Week to the top of the NWSL goal-scoring charts, where she is tied with Washington’s Crystal Dunn. Home side Kansas City had a promising opportunity of its own in the closing stages, as a long ball long through ball released Hagen and the forward released a powerful, right-footed attempt from the top of the box that whistled wide of the far post. U.S. international Hagen continued to threaten adno=S0254466

after the break, making a strong near-post run in the 52nd minute to get her foot on a cross from the right flank, only to see her redirect roll trickle just wide of the left post. Kansas City kept up the pressure and could have scored on either of a pair of 56th-minute cornes, the second of which saw Hagen smash the ball dangerously over the bar on a close-range volley at the far post. FCKC finally drew level in the 68th minute, Erika Tymrak sending in another corner from the left and fellow U.S. international Amy LePeilbet back-tracking to head the ball down and past surprised goalkeeper Dalton for a well-taken goal. The Red Stars showed a strong response to the equalizer, as Head Coach Rory Dames’ managed to keep their mighty opponents from taking control of the match and pushing for the lead. Instead, defender Hemmings gave Chicago all three points by nodding home the rebound following a Danielle Colaprico corner kick from the left and a header by center back Michelle Lomnicki that had been tipped against the post by netminder Barnhart. Kansas City’s only quality look in the closing stages was a Yael Averbuch rocket on a free-kick from 35 yards out, the Red Stars’ Dalton doing well to leave her feet and tip the ball over the frame. It would be the game’s final chance, as the visitors subsequently slowed down the pace and held on to a crucial victory that saw them increase their lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through seven regular season games when they travel to take on current Shield holders Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, May 30. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Hackbarth’s hard work ‘well worth it’ South junior takes 800 title, DGN’s Moravec is second By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Michaela Hackbarth came into the Class 3A girls track and field meet May 23 with the top time in the 800-meter dash. The Downers Grove South junior maintained that standing and captured the 800 state title with a time of 2.11.24. “It means everything. I’ve been working so hard for this,” Hackbarth said. “I’ve been injured for a lot of the year, throughout the cross country season, so trying to come back from that and work hard and finding creative ways to train around that, it’s awesome. Knowing that all my work has paid off and knowing all the blood, sweat and tears that went into it is well worth it.” Last year, Hackbarth was second in the state in the 800 with a time of 2:13, about three seconds behind winner Lauren Van Vlierbergen of Jacobs. Hackbarth made sure to keep an eye on Van Vlierbergen while running the race she wanted to run. Hackbarth didn’t get sucked in to any early battles for position and saved her energy for the end of the race. “I knew just staying relaxed in the first 200 [meters] and not to go crazy because nobody wins in the first 200 of a race,” Hackbarth said. “At the 400 [mark] I knew I wanted to stay within 10 meters of [Van Vlierbergen] because last year she just gapped everyone and no one could make it up. I just wanted to stay that close in the first 400 and the next 150 try to catch back up

Emma Moravec helped make it a Downers Grove sweep at the top of the podium in the 800 run as she clocked a 2:12.22 to take second in the Class 3A meet with a new personal best time. “I just went for as high as I could get. DOWNERS GROVE – Until last year, Downers Grove South senior Nick Kersting spent his athletic life only playing soccer. When he decided to join the track and field team, he was told of a need for hurdlers. “Actually in the beginning, I tried many different events,” Kersting said. “I just had a knack for [hurdles]. I just enjoyed it, wanted to get better.” Kersting earned his first berth to the Class 3A state meet by taking second in the 110-meter hurdles at the Downers Grove South sectional. The state meet starts May 29 at Eastern Illinois University. Senior Josh Jones and juniors Jack LaLonde and Nick Mitchell also qualified for state with top-two finishes or by achieving state-qualifying standards at the meet.

Downers Grove South’s Jack LaLonde (left) and Downers Grove North’s Alec Danner compete in the 3,200-meter run May 22 at the Downers Grove South sectional meet. Both LaLonde and Danner moved on to the state meet in the race. Kersting’s time of 15.09 seconds helped him improve from sixth place at the 2014 sectional. Jones won triple jump (45 feet, 3 inches) and Mitchell was second in discus (160-2), both with lifetime best marks.

LaLonde’s third-place 9:27.88 in the 3,200 beat the 9:29.04 qualifying standard. Mitchell previously threw beyond the 156-6 qualifying standard only at practice. “When I heard 160 I was like,

Sophomore Alec Danner knew his 3,200 time was on the bubble for qualifying for state. At the Downers Grove South sectional May 22, Danner advanced by 0.01 seconds. His fourth-place time of 9:29.03 – a lifetime best by more than eight seconds – edged the qualifying standard of 9:29.04. “It’s pretty incredible that it was that close,” Danner said. “Just the wait after the race and hearing the results was pretty much torture for me. Once I found out, and it was that close, I was so elated.”

Seniors Ryan Clevenger, Alex Janicki and Max Sale and junior Zack Hogan also advanced to state. Clevenger won the 1,600 run (4:18.32) and Hogan was second in triple jump (season-best 44 feet, 3 inches) after being third at sectionals last year. Janicki (158-4) and Sale (158-3) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in discus, but both surpassed the 156-6 qualifying standard. At state last year, Clevenger was third in the 1,600 behind two seniors with a school-record time of 4:11.20. His 1,600 at the sectional was emotional after he anchored the 4x800 relay, which suffered a dropped baton and had a third-place time of 8:09.04 that missed the 7:58.04 state qualifying cut. The relay was an all-state group in 2014 with an eighth-place showing. “I was going to get down to state and make it for them, too,” Clevenger said.

One goal down as Mustangs beat Glenbard East to win regional title LOMBARD – Meghan Riordan knew she had to stick with the play, and Ava Porlier knew she had to get to the front of the net. It was the recipe for success for Downers Grove South’s girls soccer team. Riordan corralled a corner kick that sailed through the penalty area and fed Porlier for a tap-in goal in the Mustangs 1-0 win against host Glenbard East in a Class 3A regional championship game May 22. “During halftime, we knew we had to get every ball and focus, so I knew I couldn’t just let it roll by,” Riordan said. “We had to get a goal. [Winning a regional] has been one of our team goals from the beginning of the year, so I knew I had to stick with it and I knew I had my teammates to back me up.” Rather than dropping back on defense to prevent a possible breakaway, Porlier went to the front of the net and waited for Riordan to send the ball in. “I always have conviction in Meghan’s crosses” Porlier said. “She sends amazing crosses …

and I had complete trust that Meghan was going to get that ball and send a perfect cross. A thing like that you have to capitalize on, and luckily we did.” The Riordan-to-Porlier goal came with 27:44 left to play, and after the score the Mustangs kept up the pressure. Sara Foernssler and Miyax Leon put shots on net within

five minutes of the score, and Natalia Pinto nearly curled a corner kick into the net midway through the second half. Glenbard East managed just one shot on net in the second half, that coming with less than five minutes to play, as the Mustangs moved on to face Lyons Township in a sectional semifinal May 26 at Hinsdale Central.

“It means a lot to us because this is something we’ve been working hard for, so it means a lot to us to be able to take that [regional championship plaque back to school],” Riordan said. First-year head coach Chris Hernandez echoed Riordan’s sentiments. “One of our big goals at

Downers Grove North

The Trojans went to penalty kicks in a Class 3A regional championship game against York on May 23, but they lost 2-1 against the Dukes. The score was knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation and through overtime, but York converted five penalty kicks to North’s four to win the game.

WRR

the beginning of year was to reach a regional final and win one. It’s been a few years since we’ve been at this stage, and given the history our program has it’s important to get back to that and understand that’s the expectation,” Hernandez said. “The girls have matched my expectations for that and surpassed that in terms of their effort.” The regional title was the first for South since finishing third in the state in 2012. Porlier was part of that team and sees some similarities between the two squads. “I was on the team freshman year when we went downstate, and it feels like exactly like it did. There’s no turning back now. I think we have things in our sight.”

‘Wow. OK,’ ” Mitchell said. LaLonde struggled the past month but recently learned he had an iron deficiency. “I couldn’t really tell why [I was struggling], so it kind of means a lot that, even through that, I was able to qualify,” LaLonde said.

Lisle comes up short in regional title game

PREP ROUNDUP

Downers North softball ends Downers South’s winning streak SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – In the end, Lisle’s baseball team was left with plenty of what-ifs. What if Trevor Stitt’s ball in play got through the hole? What if David White reached on a dropped third strike in the seventh inning? What if one hard-hit ball fell in the outfield? The Lions didn’t have any immediate answers after a 6-5 loss against Westmont in a Class 2A regional championship game at Timothy Christian. “Have you seen defense played like that? They made every single play,” Lisle head coach Pete Meyer said. “How many times did we have a ball hit to the outfield and they made a play on it? We did the same thing. That was just a great high school baseball game.” The Sentinels recorded eight putouts by the outfield, but two other plays were just as big. With the Lions (12-17) mounting a rally in the top of the sixth, Westmont second baseman Anthony Powers ranged to his left into the outfield grass to get Stitt at first for the last out of the inning, in the process preventing Mark McGrath from scoring from third. David White was out on a bangbang play on a dropped third strike for the last out of the game. “I don’t think you could hit the ball harder than we did today,” Meyer said. “We had seven hits, and of the balls we didn’t get through, they were hit as hard as our hits. We hit it right on the nose and they were able to make the plays. “I told the guys, I said, ‘Guys, that’s

DOWNERS GROVE – Zoe Varsbergs singled and later scored on a Jaclyn Pasakarnis single for the decisive run in Downers Grove North’s 2-1 win against Downers Grove South on May 21. Maddie Christ scored and Rae Meents had the other RBI for the Trojans, who put a stop to South’s 30-game winning streak and handed the Mustangs their first loss of the season. The Trojans followed with a 3-1 win against Riverside Brookfield on May 23. The Mustangs got back on track by taking two games against York on May 23, winning 2-1 and 9-2. Payton Buresch struck out 10 and yielded two hits while Caroline Hedgcock doubled twice and had an RBI in the 2-1 win. Megan LoBianco had four hits, including three doubles, in the game two win. Lisle’s George Swedie makes contact May 23 in a regional final game against Westmont at Timothy Christian in Elmhurst. Swedie pitched a complete game but was on the wrong end of a 6-5 loss. baseball. That’s what that was.’” McGrath drove in three runs on the day, including a two-run double in the sixth that plated Grant Haen and Ryan Joyce. Haen scored two runs in the game. George Swedie pitched a complete game for the Lions, battling a stacked Westmont lineup all game long. “There’s not many teams as good one through nine as they are, and I knew in a big game like this [Swedie] would come up big and they would come up big,” Meyer said. “That’s what happened.”
