WOODRIDGE – A Northlake man pleaded guilty Monday to the December 2012 murder and sexual assault of his former girlfriend in Woodridge, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release. Adam Belmont, 26, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault in the stabbing Adam death of Alyssa Van Me- Belmont ter of Woodridge, the release stated. About 11:30 p.m. Dec. 15, 2012, Woodridge police officers responded to a burglary/death investigation call and found a deceased Van Meter on the bedroom floor of her apartment with a stab wound

The police investigation revealed that at about 9 p.m., Belmont gained access into Van Meter’s apartment by climbing up the outside balcony and through a window. Once he was inside the apartment, a physical altercation ensued between the two in which Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious, the release stated. Belmont then stabbed her one time in the chest, piercing her heart, and sexually assaulted her, according to the release. Van Meter was starting to regain con-
sciousness when she was stabbed, but it is unclear to what degree, said Paul Darrah, State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman. Following the murder, Belmont fled the scene. He was arrested later that evening without incident, the release stated. Belmont previously pleaded not guilty to Van Meter’s murder in January 2013. His trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday, Darrah said. Belmont’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 15 for the return of the pre-sentence report. His sentencing date is scheduled for June 23, according to the release. Belmont faces 20 to 60 years served at 100 percent in the Illinois Department of Corrections on the murder charge and six to 30 years served at 85 percent on the sexual assault charge, the release stated. The sentences will be served consecutively.

GUM DISEASE & YOUR HEART
Q: Can gum disease cause other health problems? A: It’s long been known that your oral health is closely related to your overall health. New research has found that chronic periodontitis, an inflammatory gum disease, is potentially related to the severity of heart attacks, also called myocardial infarctions. Researchers from the University of Granada in Spain studied 112 heart attack patients and tested them for a variety of conditions, including periodontal health. Their preliminary findings were that there is a relationship between gum disease and the severity of heart attacks. Their findings were published in the prestigious Journal of Dental Research under the title, “Acute myocardial infarct size is related to the periodontitis extent and severity.” Research is continuing. Medical experts have known for some time, however, that bacteria from gum infection – and from other ailments in the mouth – can get into the blood stream and cause problems. Researchers have found, for instance, that people who suffer from gum disease are twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without gum disease. Several years ago, as published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, doctors determined that in the case of a 35-year-old mother who had a stillborn birth, the baby’s stomach and lungs contained the same strain of oral bacteria the mother had in her untreated gum disease. Talk with your dentist about the steps you can take to avoid gum disease.

Woodridge Park District gears up for sports seasons SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WOODRIDGE – The Woodridge Park District is preparing for its summer tennis and fall soccer programs. The district, together with Midwest Tennis, will host a spring open house from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hobson Corner Park, 2910 Hobson Road in Woodridge, to share information about the Quick Start Tennis program. The program will be offered by the Park District beginning in June. Quick Start Tennis originally was designed for children to help them develop tennis skills using smaller-sized racquets, low compression tennis balls and
smaller court sizes, according to a Park District news release. For the third year, the district is partnering with Midwest Tennis to offer Quick Start Tennis classes for preschoolers to adults. Those interested will be able to meet with instructors and try out the racquets and balls during the open house. Although the event is free, pre-registration is required at woodridgeparks.org. Early bird registration for the Woodridge Soccer Association’s fall soccer program will continue Wednesday and Saturday at the Woodridge Park District Community Center, 2600 Center Drive. The registration sessions
will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. A previous session took place May 2. Early bird registration saves registrants $10. The early bird rate for residents is $70 and non-residents is $100, compared to the regular registration rates of $80 and $110. Regular walk-in registration will be during business hours May 11 through June 16. No fax, online, mail-in or drop-off registration will be accepted. The eight-game fall season runs from Aug. 22 through Oct. 17. Visit woodridgeparks.org/wsa.php for more information.
Lisle shredding event recycles 8.5 tons of paper SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – About 8.5 tons of paper was shredded during the Lisle Park District’s seventh annual paper shred event April 18, according to a district news release. More than 400 vehicles came through Lisle Community Park to drop off documents for free, on-site destruction, the release stated. The Park District offers this shredding event every April on a Saturday close to Tax Day. At the annual shred, an industrial shredder destroys documents into high-security, confetti-size pieces, according to the release. Event volunteers included members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle as part of the church’s WeServe volunteer
community service program, the release stated. The 2016 event will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 23, 2016. In addition to the shredding event, the Lisle Park District always is collecting non-confidential paper, newspapers, magazines, crayons, athletic shoes and textiles for recycling at the Community Center, 1825 Short St. The district recently was awarded a certificate of sustainability by its partner in textile recycling, USAgain, for recycling 3,736 pounds of textiles in 2014, according to the release. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook resident won $450,000 when she used family birthdays to play Lucky Day Lotto, according to an Illinois Lottery news release. Marie Colon’s ticket matched all five numbers – 01 - 06 - 07 - 15 - 27 – in the March 25 Lucky Day Lotto evening drawing to win a $450,000 jackpot prize. The 20-year Bolingbrook resident was at home when she discovered her big win. “I signed up on the Illinois Lottery website to receive a daily email alert of the winning numbers drawn, and when I checked my email the morning after the drawing, I instantly recognized my numbers,” Colon said in the release. “I couldn’t believe I won such a big prize.” She plans to use the windfall to pay off her mortgage and invest, according to the release. The winning ticket was purchased at Convenient Food Mart, 8290 S. Janes Ave. in Woodridge. The retailer received a bonus of $4,500, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling a winning ticket. n LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: What are you planting in your spring garden?
POLL QUESTION: Should all workers get paid sick and/or vacation leave? Vote online at mysuburbanlife.com.
Child health safety OUR VIEW Some sour notes mar good should be a priority
moves by new COD board
If you were hoping the new majority on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees would hit the ground running at their first meeting, starting the process of repudiating all the controversial decisions we’ve seen out of the school in the past year, then you were likely thrilled with what you saw at Thursday’s meeting. If you felt, though, the winners from the April 7 election should allow the outgoing board members to recede into obscurity with at least a little bit of dignity, well, that didn’t happen. Some strife is inevitable. The three holdovers from the previous board lineup who represent the former majority aren’t likely to support the four members, led by new Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, in many of their efforts to roll back all of those bad decisions. There are going to be a lot of 4-3 votes, as there were Thursday. Putting its stamp on President Robert Breuder’s medical leave by voting to put him on administrative leave – good. Now, he can’t declare his medical leave ended and go back to work at any time he pleases. Moving forward with a state-run audit of the college’s finances – also good. We need clarity on whether the college has been a good steward of tax dollars and students’ tuition. Hiring temporary legal counsel for the board that had previously represented Hamilton – an eyebrow raiser for sure. What was decidedly not good was the political theater around the awarding of “certificates of appreciation” for outgoing board members Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda. New Vice Chairwoman Deanne Marie
Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, is the Illinois Senate Republican Leader.
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
Mazzochi, part of the “Clean Slate” of candidates that bested Savage and Svoboda at the polls, questioned whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding and could have an impact on ongoing investigations of the school. To an observer, this line of questioning seems like a mean-spirited dig rather than a sincere concern. Apparently it wasn’t sufficient to have defeated Savage and Svoboda at the polls, to have been given a mandate from voters that sweeping change was needed on the board. Instead of being a gracious victor and moving on to clean up the mess made by previous leaders, we have an overt attempt to humiliate those who were defeated. It’s no surprise that Savage and Svoboda chose to leave before the official vote on the certificates. Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda took part in votes that were openly derided on this very opinion page, and were part of a former board that generally left the entire Chicago region scratching its collective heads trying to understand what was going on in Glen Ellyn. But surely there’s no harm in taking a moment to recognize their service, letting them have a moment of acknowledgment as their time as public servants came to a close. If the ongoing investigations point fingers in their direction, so be it. That’s another matter for another day. Being right on many, or even most, of the issues doesn’t give the new board majority carte blanche to treat the new minority, or anyone else, in a disrespectful fashion. There’s a lot to fix, but showing some decorum in the process would go a long way toward healing the wounds on campus, too.

When moms and dads drop their babies off at day care, there must be a level of assurance their children will be taken care of and protected from harm. Parents should not have to worry that their infant or toddler could contract a fatal disease from the day care workers who care for them. That’s why I am proposing a new law that day care workCOMMUNITY ers who care for babies and VOICE toddlers be immunized for Christine measles and other diseases Radogno that are potentially fatal to small children. The Illinois Senate overwhelmingly approved my proposal. Senate Bill 986 mandates child care facilities in Illinois that care for children ages 6 and younger require their employees to provide proof of two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, as well as proof of having received the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines (Tdap). As an alternative, those workers can provide medical proof of immunity to those harmful diseases. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause severe health complications, including fatal cases of pneumonia and encephalitis. Children younger than 7 need the extra level of protection because the measles vaccination is actually a two-shot series that children do not complete until they are 6 years old. The Centers for Disease Control recommends the first dose to be administered to babies 12 to 15 months old. The second dose is usually administered between 4 to 6 years old. Additionally, young children also are vulnerable to three other deadly diseases caused by bacteria, including diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, because it takes five doses of the DTaP vaccine to achieve full immunity. Children receive one dose at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 to 18 months and 4 to 6 years old. Without the full benefits of immunization, infants and toddlers are extremely susceptible to contracting the measles and other potentially fatal diseases if exposed. The Illinois Department of Public Health, whose mission is centered on “protecting health, improving lives,” supports my legislation, Senate Bill 986, which awaits further consideration in the House of Representatives. If approved there, the proposal will be presented to Gov. Bruce Rauner for final approval. Measles is one of the most preventable illnesses, and while the vast majority of our population is vaccinated, we need to ensure every precaution is taken to protect those babies and toddlers who are too young to be immunized.

Where would the dogs go?
This is in response to the woman who is telling people to stop volunteering for adoption rescue animals. My rescue is not a brick-and-mortar rescue. We count on the kindness of foster homes and our veterinary offices. Many brick-and-mortar rescues have paid staff and some volunteers. If you want to look, so be it, at the dogs in their kennels. The majority of breed rescue dogs are not in these facilities; they are individual rescues, breed specific. So please, do not tell us to stop volunteering, or else where would these dogs go?
How does looting help issues surrounding police, crime?

It seems like every time they have some officer shooting somebody, there’s always a riot. ... I can understand them taking out their anger on the police because they see them as the people who perpetrated the crime against their victim. But with this looting and everything, I just don’t understand how that plays into it. That’s why a lot of people don’t have sympathy for these people when something like this happens. They see all the looting that has absolutely nothing to do with the crime that was committed or the police who committed the crime. It’s just ridiculous.
Taking more and more away
Hi, this is a rebuttal call to the person who said don’t blame the governor. We know that the state of Illinois has been in bad trouble through Democratic poor handling, however you want to call it. But when he comes into office and he starts cutting things – education, funding for pension that’s already been there, cutting the medical needs of people who are on disability, cutting college kids who get grants. ... Look at all the Republican states that are in dire straits because of their Republican governors. ... They just want to slash and make us pay more and take more and more away from us. That’s what he’s trying to do. He’s a venture capitalist, and he will always be one.

I was just wondering why churches and towns don’t know that it is the people who determine what is done and that the people are the ones who are the instigators of change and that people should be consulted as to what changes are being done.

After completing a varied career in learning, researching, teaching and publishing in my field of education ... , I submit that I am prepared to comment on the process by which public school district superintendents are chosen. Breuder out
Early in the meeting, the board addressed one of the biggest elephants in the room: President Robert Breuder. The controversial leader has been in the limelight for months, first for a leaked email in July 2014 that advised trustees to find “politically attractive” ways to spend $20 million in state fund-
Audits and legal action
The board also moved on several
looming issues regarding legislation and legal action against the school Thursday. After months of foot-dragging, trustees authorized a state-run audit of the school’s finances from 2009 to 2014 by the Illinois Auditor General’s Office. Earlier this year, several members of the General Assembly asked for the audit, including state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton. Ives originally gave the college a March 12 deadline to accept terms for an audit dating to 2011 and agree to pay for the estimated $144,000 to $234,000 project. The board also authorized an internal investigation into the college’s accounts Thursday, directed staff to provide the board and college’s client files from several law firms, and formalized a litigation hold in light of the federal investigations against the school. Additionally, it hired new temporary legal counsel – Elliott’s Rathje & Woodward and Schuyler, Roche & Crisham – for the board. Both were retained to guide the board over the next four months, though the three old guard trustees questioned the latter’s hire, as one of its attorneys, Dan Kinsella, represented Hamilton after the
board censured her last year.
Suspended accounts The board has previously received criticism about lavish spending accounts held by Breuder and trustees, including several thousand dollars spent at campus restaurant Waterleaf, but it moved Thursday to suspend all travel and entertainment reimbursements for trustees as well as all “house” accounts on or off campus. When several trustees voiced concern, particularly student trustee Gloria Roark, Hamilton said the board would evaluate each case individually and that it represented a stop until the board looked over its policies. The board also hired a transition team led by Donald Haider, professor of strategy at the Kellogg School of Management. The team will guide new board members and possibly interim administrative leadership through the legal action against the college and recommend ways to improve operations and governance. Hamilton said she was already looking at filling it with volunteer local stakeholders from across the district.

The College of DuPage could be on its way to a “Clean Slate,” but the cleaning may not come too easy if the new Board of Trustee’s second meeting Thursday is any example. The board includes three new faces after the April election – Deanne Marie Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein – united under a shared platform of reform and behind newly selected Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton. With the majority of the seven-member board on lock, the four pushed through an aggressive special meeting agenda that the three remaining trustees consistently voted against, citing a lack of transparency and inclusion in its drafting.
ing promised to the school. His tenure was later punctuated by the board’s approval of a $763,000 buyout for his early retirement in March 2016 and several DuPage County and federal subpoenas looking into his on-campus spending and that of trustees and administrators under his watch. Breuder beat the board to his proposed ouster, announcing April 28 he would be taking medical leave, but trustees still put him on administrative leave with pay during the meeting. New college attorney Tim Elliott, who also serves as a Glen Ellyn village trustee and has been involved in cases against the college twice in the past year, said the move gave the board control over the timing of Breuder’s return. College trustee Joseph Wozniak said he was voting down the measure not just in protest of lack of transparency, but also because he was “not going to kick a man when he’s down.” The passage of the vote, which included installing Executive Vice President Joseph Collins as acting interim president, was met with applause from the public.

COD board chooses ‘Clean Slate’ trustees officers By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com What some believe to be a new era at the College of DuPage started off with a rocky first few votes Thursday. The Board of Trustees chose a new chair, vice chair and secretary – all affiliates of the triumphant “Clean Slate” candidates – during its organizational meeting. However, those selections were far from unanimous. Outspoken trustee and former vice chairwoman Kathy Hamilton was elevated to chairwoman. Deanne Marie Mazzochi was voted vice chairwoman and Frank Napolitano was named secretary. All three votes were passed 4-3, split each time between the new majority reformers and the old guard of previous chairwoman Erin Birt, Joseph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire. “The College of DuPage has been through tough times, times marked by extended and continuous denial,” Hamilton said. “Those troubles are not yet over, but the causes of those troubles are. This institution faces criminal investigations, legislative disdain and alienation from constituents.” Members of the public in attendance largely cheered the new officers’ election, many even giving a standing ovation. However, the meeting also devolved several times into personal attacks among the trustees and public. Hamilton said the board must be more responsive to the community to earn back its trust, and that constituents were “rightly outraged.” She promised change would begin immediately, with the board considering voting on a transition team to address some of the college’s policy problems later Thursday. Mazzochi and Napolitano, along with Charles Bernstein, were elected trustees April 7 amid a storm of con-

Former trustees Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda were defeated in their bids for reelection, and outgoing trustee Allison O’Donnell did not seek another term. The new board had an action-packed first meeting, highlighted by a nine-minute grilling of college Treasurer Thomas Glaser by Mazzochi about transparency and future policy changes and a heated awarding of certificates of appreciation for Savage and Svoboda.

The certificates thanked the two for their service, as well as that of outgoing student trustee Omar Escamilla. Savage and Svoboda both spoke during the meeting, thanking those they worked with during their six-year terms and saying they were grateful for their time in office. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve as a trustee of the College of DuPage for the past six years,” Savage said, touting progress made in recent years. “I will always hold the college, the people of the college in my heart and in high regard, as you do amazing work in the community.” Hamilton said she admired those
who participate in public service and said the sentiment of gratitude should be honored, regardless of controversy surrounding the school. However, the meeting turned heated when Mazzochi asked whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding in any ongoing investigations. Both Wozniak and Birt bristled at her inquiries during what was supposed to be a moment of recognition. Birt said Mazzochi was “completely disrespectful” and that Mazzochi was “showing [her] colors.” Savage and Svoboda both left during Mazzochi’s questions before the official vote.

Media and DuPage Credit Union then graded each student based on academic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular participation to determine who would win the coveted scholarships. The two winners, both nominated by their counselors, were shocked after seeing the amount of qualified nominees. Krusenoski – who has a 4.5 GPA and is involved in the school newspaper as well as varsity cross country and track – believes it was her ability to focus only on activities she could put her heart into that helped elevate her to attain the scholarship. “Everything I try to pursue in these last four years is something I pursued with passion,” Krusenoski said. “In doing so I was able to put in a lot of effort and a lot of heart into what I was doing.”

No to Downers Grove Park District borrowing
Downers Grove has excellent firefighters
I’m a retired Chicago Fire Department person from the city of Chicago. I’ve lived out here for 20 years after I retired in 1995-96. I’d like to make a comment about this woman who wrote ... about they should build a firehouse next to a grocery store. Seems she thinks the fire department spends most of their time
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the members of the Downers Grove North High School band (and band conductors), along with guest artist Frank Caruso, for their gracious kindness in performing an outstanding concert on April 14. Their talent is remarkable. I can only imagine the practice and hard work that blossomed into such an excellent performance. I would highly recommend DG plays and concerts as a family activity. You won’t be disappointed. May God abundantly bless them and their families.
Purpose of library?
Did the Downers Grove taxpayers spend over $2.5 million for the library so that we can harbor the homeless and the indigent to spend all day, every day, there? And yesterday afternoon, we had a firetruck in the parking lot at the library and an ambulance blocking Curtiss. Six firemen in the lobby for one man. And
Hope Hinsdale District 86 board walkout is permanent
It appears Hinsdale is but a suburb of Ferguson, Mo., and Baltimore, with the walkout of board members Kay Gallo, Mike Kuhn and Jennifer Planson because they are upset that voters overwhelmingly approved referendum against teachers striking. One can only hope their walkout is permanent. They are all too old to still be threatening, “If I don’t get my way, I’m taking the ball home.” Thuggish behavior has no place in American society.
Downtown Elmhurst needs more interesting shops
I believe that if Elmhurst could limit their downtown rents and choose to rent to more interesting shops, there would be an increase in foot traffic. Bringing in more condos will not provide more foot traffic to the area ... It seems like all we bring in is more chains, banks, Realtors and the like. Elmhurst does not need more of those. Women do most of the shopping, so why don’t we bring in more shops that appeal to women? We need the cute, little shops that draw us women into wanting to walk and browse in and out of stores.
Sign needs to be bigger
At the northeast corner of Butterfield and Finley roads, there’s a traffic sign that says “left on green arrow only.” Well, the sign is so small that the average person does not see it, and it really needs to be larger.
Appreciating tough questions
I would like to acknowledge the fine attention to costs and decisions by past [Elmhurst] aldermen of George Szczepaniak, Paula Pezza and Diane Gutenkauf. They always asked the tough questions and, in many situations, were by themselves and opposed from the majority of the council. Michael Bram also joined them, and now he is all alone. One realizes that decisions by the aldermen are not easy, nor always popular. Keep asking the tough questions, Michael! You are appreciated by many of us.
Why pay landscaping firm?
Could somebody please tell us why we are paying a landscaping firm to cut the lawn and manicure it on the Park District on Linden Street when the [Glen Ellyn] Park District building is only six blocks down on Kenilworth? It just seems strange that we have to hire an outside contractor to maintain that lawn for a building and property that somebody from the Park District lives there.

Wake up, Downers Grove. More than $2 million was just spent to redesign our library and toss loads of resources. No voter referendum. Now, our Park District wants to borrow more than $4 million to buy 14 acres of private property ... at 355 and Ogden Avenue. Pay attention. No more property tax income from this undesirable real estate. The Park District meets [tomorrow] at the Village Hall at 7 p.m.
Kudos to Downers North band

Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams.

I am not normally a fan of fish (or asparagus, for that matter), but even I was impressed with the dish and the way it was presented. I set aside my desire for the bacon-and-blue-cheese-infused hamburger with truffled mayo and sampled the Cuban sandwich. The fresh ground mustard worked well with sweet pickles and the smokiness of the pork, all encased in a perfectly toasted Cuban roll, akin to French bread. For dessert, we tried the salted caramel cheesecake. It looked so much like ice cream we thought it would be cold, but it was light, fluffy and sweet with the right amount of salted caramel flavor on top of a toasty graham cracker crust. As chef Irvine noted on “Restaurant Impossible,” the food at Zest has always been

DOWNERS GROVE – A star turn on the Food Network show “Restaurant Impossible” spotlighted Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and the Zest Bistro located within, where the food has always been center stage. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the television program, said it was one of just a few times in years of filming the show that he actually enjoyed the food served at the outset. That’s high praise from a well-regarded chef who never hesitates to call it like he sees it. That there was nothing wrong with the menu in the first place was confirmed when my date and I recently paid a visit to Zest. Though we were both hungry, we asked our waiter to give us more time to peruse the choices, because every item sounded delectable. Before picking entrees, we decided to appease our appetites by ordering the short rib nachos appetizer. Thick and crunchy tortilla chips were the foundation for a great blend of flavors that ranged from the sweetness of the beef to the tang of Cotija cheese sauce and lime horseradish crema, with a hint of spiciness from fresh green chilies. We paired our appetizer with beverages. My date picked a beer from an impressive list of offerings by independent breweries, while I chose the Dark and Stormy Mule served in a copper mug. The rum-based drink did a dance on my taste buds with simple syrup and ginger beer leading the tango. Irvine’s signature pot roast, introduced to the menu after his recent visit to Downers Grove, must be a fan favorite, as Zest had just served the last of a roast made a bit earlier in the day and was in the process of cooking a second. My companion was slightly disappointed not to be able to try the dish, but that changed when her salmon entree arrived. The perfectly cooked fillet was coated in a honey mustard glaze and served with a sweet and savory orange mustard

Red Stars Down Sky Blue FC 1-0 in World Cup Send-Off
Colaprico scores first professional goal as Chicago stays unbeaten in 2015 Chicago, Illinois – – The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Chicago Red Stars dominated and stayed unbeaten in their third match of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, defeating Sky Blue FC 1-0 behind rookie midfielder Danielle Colaprico’s first tally of her professional career. While the visitors from New Jersey were without all of their World-Cupbound players, the home match served as the Send-Off event for five of the eight Chicago stars who will be competing in this summer’s tournament in Canada. The Red Stars put pressure on their opponents early and created the first close look in the 5th minute, as defender Taryn Hemmings sprinted up the right wing and sent a dangerous ball to the far post. Teammate Vanessa DiBernardo was unfortunate to see her header from a tight angle sail just over the frame. A mere four minutes later, the hosts’ aggressive approach nearly paid off, DiBernardo coming close to stripping goalkeeper Brittany Cameron of the ball for what would have been a certain tally. Chicago had its next quality chance moments later. Former Virginia standout Colaprico sent Lori Chalupny down the left and the 31-year-old’s centering pass seemed destined to be tapped home at the doorstep. Instead, it evaded both defenders and attackers, trickling just wide of the far post. Red Stars striker Christen Press, who came into the game as the newly crowned NWSL Player of the Month for April, had two opportunities to open the scoring in the 18th minute. After her left-footed attempt from 20 yards out forced a diving save, Press got back on the ball and fired just high from inside the penalty area. She caused havoc once again halfway through

the first period, this time courtesy of Chalupny, who flew down the left and saw her low firsttime cross rifled just wide by Press. After an uneventful finish to the opening period, Chicago came out of the break with renewed urgency, and the persistence finally paid off in the 54th minute. Having hit teammate Julie Johnston in the face on her initial blast from just inside the box, Colaprico did everything right on the rebound, smashing a left-footed rocket past the outstretched arms of Cameron to make it 1-0. The crowd at Benedictine University subsequently had to wait until 15 minutes from full time for another quality opportunity, Chicago’s Chalupny exploding into the box on the left and rifling a laser beam on target that was guided over the bar by the fingertips of Cameron. Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made her best stop of the match in the 86th minute, leaving her feet and diving to her right to deny Hayley Haagsma’s dangerous header off an in-swinging free-kick from the wing. Cara Walls nearly sealed the deal for the hosts in stoppage time, as she found herself one-on-one with netminder Cameron, who pounced on a lapse in concentration to defuse the threat. It would be the day’s final close look, as the home side earned its second win of 2015. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn three more points when they take on Boston Breakers this coming Saturday in a doubleheader with MLS outfit Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

DOWNERS GROVE – Grace Stevenson has proven she can play in the big leagues. In her first year on the varsity soccer team, the Downers Grove North freshman goalkeeper has started all 15 games this season for the Trojans, notching 10 shutouts and powering the girls to a 10-5 record. “The season has gone a lot better than expected; it’s been an incredible experience and the girls have been great mentors to me along the way,” Stevenson said. “This is an amazingly talented group of girls who are a lot of fun to play with, and my big sisters on the team, senior Kacey Ford and junior Arlinda Osmani, as well as defender Alyse Dutcher have been a huge help on and off the field.” Before the beginning of the spring soccer season, Stevenson’s role on the team was in doubt. While she likely would have made the varsity squad, it would have been as a backup to last year’s starting keeper, Izzy Greenblatt. But when Greenblatt decided to not try out for the team this season, the starting netminder role was up for grabs. Stevenson said the coaching staff notified her right before tryouts that starting job was hers. “I was pretty excited. I knew it would be a really big challenge because most of my opponents would be a couple years older than me, but I knew it would be an experi-
“Grace has stepped up in a huge way and played really well for us,” Calder said. “It’s crazy, she’s given up nine goals in 15 games. She has an enormous upside and is among the multiple underclassman who are painting a really bright future for our soccer program.” One of four freshman on the varsity roster this spring, Stevenson is used to playing up to her competition, as she was once a goalie on an all-boys club team. “Playing on the Downers Grove Roadrunners boys team was definitely challenging and was a little bit of a different dynamic,” Stevenson said. “But it was good experience and I got to work on a more aggressive style of play, then bring that over to a different environment.” In addition to her mental fortitude, Stevenson also has the physical intangibles of a solid goalkeeper. At 5-foot-9, she is listed as the tallest player on the Trojans’ roster and has the wingspan that helps her cover all four corners of the net. Additionally, she has great range and athletic ability that is continually improving, according to Calder. She also is humble, attributing a portion of her success to the stingy Trojan defense. “The defense and mids have been unbelievable in front of me,” Stevenson said. “They were so great in bringing me up to speed in the beginning of the season, and since then we have come together really nicely as a unit.” DGN defeated ProviMark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com so West 8-0 Thursday, but Downers Grove North goalkeeper Grace Stevenson makes a save Monday during a game against Glenbard could not keep the momentum going at the West ChicaNorth at the West Chicago invite. Buresch perfect as part of DGS softball sweep By DAVE OWEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com GLEN ELLYN – If it’s possible, Downers Grove South’s unbeaten softball team became ever more perfect Saturday. Holders of a perfect 22-0 record after a 12-1, 14-0 doubleheader sweep at Glenbard West in matching five-inning games, the Mustangs had added reason to celebrate in game two when sophomore pitcher Payton Buresch [10-0 record] tossed her first-career perfect game. Buresch’s nine strikeouts included eight of the first nine hitters she faced. The 15th and last out was the defensive play of the day. On a low line drive to shallow center field, freshman Lindsey Herrmann made a sliding catch on her knees to complete the perfect game. “That was a little scary, but thanks to Lindsey – wow, that was a fantastic catch, just amazing,” Buresch said. “Everyone backs me up really well. I can trust my defense. “I’ve been really focusing on my rise ball, and it was working today. Then I kept them off balance by throwing my change-up.” Both of the Mustangs’ pitching aces dominated. Caroline Hedgcock (11-0) allowed just

Both Hedgcock and Buresch went 4 for 5 at the plate for the doubleheader, with Buresch hitting a three-run double for the key
hit of game one. “I’ve been really focusing on finding my pitch early in the count so I can get my pitch and hit it,” Buresch said. Hedgcock was 3 for 4 in game one, and Buresch was 2 for 2 with four RBIs. Two hits each by Kristen Bialek, Megan
LoBianco, Kristin Lea and Rebekah Ondracek [two triples] added to the attack in the opener, as the Mustangs scored six times in the first inning and rolled from there. “The girls really came to play, and they played with a lot of energy,” Mustangs coach Ron
Havelka said. “We came out and hit the ball well. What was nice was that we scored early. And both pitchers pitched well.” In game two, RBI singles by Zahrya McFarland [3 for 4, three RBIs] and Ondracek highlighted a three-run first. The lead was 8-0 through two innings thanks to a Bialek triple, RBI doubles by McFarland and Lea [3 for 4, two RBIs] and a two-run home run by LoBianco. The Mustangs’ reserves also got into the act, as Rebecca Bluder hit a solo home run in the fourth. “It was a good day overall,” Havelka said. “We hit well and we got everybody some playing time.” As the win total rises, keeping focus remains a priority for the Mustangs. “I’m kind of cautious,” Havelka said. “We have to keep getting better and keep trying to get momentum going into the playoffs.
