THE RIGHT WAY TO BRUSH Q: Is there a recommended technique for brushing teeth? A: Yes. Divide your mouth into quadrants, thinking of right and left sections on top, and the same on the bottom. And think of each quadrant having an inside and outside, for a total of eight sections. Brush each of those sections separately. The back teeth are the hardest

to clean, so start with them. To get at the outside surfaces of the back teeth, open your mouth only slightly.

You want to make sure the brush’s bristles work their way into the groove – also called the sulcus – where tooth and gum meet. Keep the brush horizontal and the strokes short, a

performed here before, but people love them. They always bring in a big crowd,” she said. “But it’s important to try to bring in bands we’ve never had before, just to offer a variety of music to accommodate everyone’s taste.” The Woodridge Police Department will have a AAA driving simulator from noon to 3 p.m. June 20. This is the first time the department has hosted this event at the jubilee. There will be plenty of activities for the entire family, Pettit said. In the afternoon June 20, children can make a craft, and Home Depot will host a children’s workshop. “We’ll also have some sort of inflatable, and the specific one changes every year,” she said. “We’ll also have a petting zoo and a rock climbing wall. And of course there’s the carnival.” The carnival runs from June 17 through 21, and Pettit said festivalgoers can buy an unlimited ride bracelet for $20

WOODRIDGE – Woodridge residents will hear new music and enjoy some festive fireworks at this year’s Jubilee, which begins June 17. This year marks the 32nd annual Woodridge Jubilee, which will run through June 21. All the events, which are free, will be held at Woodridge and Center drives. Libido Funk Circus, which is making its first appearance at the jubilee, will be the June 18 headliner. Megan Pettit, public relations manager for the Woodridge Park District, described the band as a combination of “disco, funk and Motown.” Modern Day Romeos, also new this year, will cover some of the biggest hits from the ’80s and ’90s June 19. Rudolph’s Beach Party, a children’s band, will kick off at 3 p.m. June 20. Pettit said they will have hula hoops, limbo and a bubble machine. Classic rock band Kick Back City will follow at 5 p.m., and at 7 p.m., all-female country band Wild Daisy will take the stage. Pettit said June 20’s headliner is Heartache Tonight, a Bill Ackerman file photo - backerman@shawmedia.com popular Eagles tribute band, Gabriella Weber, 3, of Downers Grove goes for a spin wearing her fairy followed by fireworks to cap wings at the 2014 Woodridge Jubilee summer festival. The event re- off the evening. “Heartache Tonight has turns June 17.

June 20 and 21. Adults can enjoy the beer tent and several food vendors. Fishing enthusiasts might want to take note of the fishing derby at noonJune 20 at Lake Harriet. The derby has a $4 fee. Pettit said there will be prizes for the longest fish and shortest fish. The Park District and village of Woodridge work together on the jubilee and split the cost evenly, Pettit said. “This is just one big special event to kick off summer, and we always hold it on Father’s Day weekend,” she said. “It’s just good timing, school’s out and there’s usually not a whole lot of competing events that weekend.” Jack Knight, assistant to the village administrator, said he estimates between 8,000 and 10,000 people enjoy the jubilee every year. “This is a long-standing tradition in our community, and lots of people look forward to it,” he said. Parking will be available at the Town Centre and Community Center, with overflow parking on the grassy lot on Woodridge Drive. “It’s a great location because it’s easy for people to get to. People can even walk from some surrounding neighborhoods,” Pettit said. “It’s in the heart of Woodridge.”

nlurz@shawmedia.com A man who worked part time for Woodridge Park District after-school programs is being held without bond after allegedly attempting to abduct and abuse young children on multiple occasions including recently in Lisle. Giuseppe “Joe” Ressa, 34, of the 300 block of Post Oak Circle, West Chicago, appeared in DuPage County court for a bond hearing June 4 and is charged with three counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and three counts of child abduction. Ressa has a history of police complaints dating back to at least 2001, prosecutors said. He came to the attention of law enforcement after allegedly approaching two siblings, ages 5 and 7, May 27 as they were playing in a playground at the apartment complex where they lived on Dogwood Drive in Lisle, prosecutors said. Ressa allegedly made aggressive physical contact with the older sibling and offered the younger toys if he agreed to go into Ressa’s vehicle. A third sibling then called the two home, and the children’s parents contacted the

Upon further investigation, the department found the incident was hardly a first for Ressa. He had a history of parent complaints – at least 10, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, dating back to 2001, and some as recent as this year – in Wheaton, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Warrenville and Glen Ellyn, among other communities, prosecutors said. That history included allegedly telling a girl he had “special powers from God” that allowed him to hear things and promising to teach her if she didn’t tell anyone, prosecutors said. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct in 2004 for inappropriate contact and statements made to a 10-year-old Glen Ellyn girl and was placed under court supervision. In a June 5 message to families on the Woodridge Park District website, Executive Director Mike Adams said Ressa “cleared a thorough background

check conducted by the Illinois State Police.” Additional background checks completed by the State of Illinois Department of Human Services and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services also revealed no criminal records history, he said. Ressa was arrested June 1 after Lisle detectives conducting surveillance on him as a suspect in the May 27 incident observed him allegedly interacting with and giving candy to three children, ages 4, 6 and 7, at their apartment building in Addison, after he visited several other apartment buildings across DuPage, prosecutors said. Two of the children followed Ressa to another apartment building after the promise of more candy while the third left to tell her mother. Ressa then allegedly rubbed the upper leg of the 7-year-old, prosecutors said, and detectives intervened and placed him into custody. In addition to the Woodridge Park District, Ressa also previously has worked with children at the B.R. Ryall YMCA in Glen Ellyn and the Westmont Park District, Berlin said, in addition to other area churches and organizations, prosecutors said. After his arrest, detectives obtained

warrants and searched Ressa’s Chevy Equinox and his room in his parents’ house. There they found what prosecutors identified as “hundreds” of pieces of paper. Included were: drawings by children; the personal information of customers he obtained while employed at a bank from 2006 to 2010, often with lewd and specific handwritten notes about their children; prayers that included the names of children across the country who had been abducted; prayers for children to be his wives in heaven; a book about grooming children for pedophilia; and several notes depicting erotic scenarios with children. Ressa also had a calendar with several notes on it, prosecutors said, including a Dec. 9 note – Ressa’s birthday – labeling the day as “real Christmas” and a note Dec. 25 stating history would “apologize for getting it wrong.” Additionally, detectives found a toddler’s bike helmet, a soccer ball, a wristband and other children’s items. Prosecutors said Ressa is single with no children. Berlin said the investigation is still ongoing and declined to comment on whether investigators had found any

Benedictine selects Michael Brophy as president SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – Benedictine University announced June 9 that the current president of Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., will be the university’s 11th president. Dr. Michael S. Brophy was chosen by the school’s Board of Trustees from a field of national candidates to succeed William J. Carroll, who announced in January he would step down after leading Benedictine for the past 20 years, according to a university news release. The extensive presidential search included a vetting process by a com-

mittee of administrators, faculty, staff and board members and face-to-face question-and-answer sessions with faculty, staff and students. Brophy was among three finalists brought to the Benedictine campus for interviews with the presidential search committee and to meet faculty, staff and students. “We believe he is the right fit for Benedictine and will embrace the Benedictine values while leading our institution toward even greater future achievements,” Benedictine University Board of Trustees Chairman James L. Melsa said. Brophy has led the Marymount California University campus since 2006

and helped transform Marymount – a Catholic university with 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students – from a private two-year college to a multisite university with undergraduate and graduate degree offerings, the release stated. A Fulbright exchange scholarship recipient who has taught internationally, Brophy served as the campus executive officer and dean of the University of Wisconsin’s Baraboo campus and associate provost at Long Island University in New York, according to the release. Brophy will assume the Benedictine University presidency in mid-August. “Higher education faces some dif-

ficult challenges in the years ahead – increasing government regulation and mandates, a decreasing pool of students, rising costs, competition from community colleges – but I believe that Benedictine University is positioned to meet those challenges,” Brophy said. Brophy earned his doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Wisconsin. He currently lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., with his wife, Tara, and their three children, but he will be relocating to the Chicago area to begin his appointment as Benedictine University president, the release stated.

Adams also encouraged parents with concerns or information about suspicious activity related to Ressa, who no longer works for the Woodridge Park District, to contact the Woodridge Police Department. Berlin said the case should serve as a notice for parents to remind children of the danger of strangers. “Clearly the actions of the defendant indicate that he is a pedophile and that he is a danger to children,” Berlin said. “He poses a real and present threat to the safety of the community.” Lisle Police Chief Dave Anderson said he breathed a sigh of relief when Wilson ordered Ressa be held without bond. “All of us in law enforcement got in it to stop these type of people,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.” Ressa also appeared in court June 5, when prosecutors offered the option for him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, a spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office said. He will next appear in court to accept or decline the offer June 15.

Make sure all of your children have a skin-safe summer Chronic exposure to the sun puts us at increased risk for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (the most common forms of skin cancer), melanoma (the most dangerous kind of skin cancer) and premature aging and wrinkling. There’s nothing healthy about a tan. It means skin has COMMUNITY been damaged. In fact, one VOICE blistering sunburn in childJames hood is estimated to double Lengemann the risk of getting melanoma later in life, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. There’s nothing healthy However, babies, young about a tan. It means skin children and teens won’t be thinking about these facts as has been damaged. they play outside and head to the pools and beaches the next several months. Follow these tips so your children are skin safe this summer and to help them avoid skin problems later in life. • Newborns should be kept out of the sun. Use sunscreen on babies six months and older. • Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher and labeled “broad spectrum,” which means it blocks UVA and UVB sunlight. • Sunscreen should be generously applied 15-30 minutes before going outside and re-applied every two hours, sooner if kids are swimming. • The sun’s harmful rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Set up activities in shaded areas or remind kids to play in the shade to limit exposure. • Wear shirts/tops that are dark and tightly woven to shield skin from the sun’s rays. • Have kids wear wide-brimmed hats (at the very least a baseball cap) and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Remind teens not to lay out or visit tanning salons – doing so increases their risk for skin cancer and leads to wrinkles, blemishes and age spots later in life. From training in Lisle to performing at an exceptional level at the CrossFit Central Regional in Minneapolis, Kristin Miller has come a long way. Miller spends five days a week at CrossFit Amplify in Lisle, and she recently took home an 11th place finish among 40 competitors at the event in Minneapolis. Her goal is to eventually finish in the top five and make it to the national event – here’s hoping she makes it. Congrats to Downers Grove North’s Ryan Clevenger and Downers Grove South’s Nick Kersting, who each took home medals from the IHSA state track meet. Clevenger came in fourth in the 1,600-meter run and Kersting was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. Great job, guys! Hold cyclists accountable

Why [do] bicycle riders have their own lane and choose not to stay in that lane and follow the rules of the road like everyone else has to? They never stop at stop lights or signal their intentions to make a right turn and also be aware of people in the crosswalk. I feel if they’re riding in the streets, they should be held accountable like we motorists.

I wholeheartedly agree with the person who sounded off a few weeks ago about Lisle using toxic chemicals in the public spaces. We’re the arboretum village and should be more conscientious of what we do to the environment. The overwhelming majority of products that go on residential lawns and public park land have carcinogens, create polluted runoff that goes in our waterways and decimate the pollinator population like bees and butterflies. I really wish everybody would start hating environmental degradation and cancer more than dandelions.

I’m tired of all the smoke in Hillcrest Subdivision in Lemont Township. It’s summertime and the windows are open and the burning starts. I’m home from work and the house is full of smoke. I agree with the June 3 suggestion of Westmont bringing back the old program of branch pickup on the parkways. Precious time is wasted by tying branches into small bundles. The added time for me has put me very far behind in cleaning up my yard from past storms and brush that died since last fall.

The Village invests funds using sound financial practices in keeping with its Cash Management and Investment Policy which is available at www.downers.us.

FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available. Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees.

STORM GRATES The Village asks for your help, if you are able, in keeping storm grates on your street free and clear of leaves and other debris. This allows water to flow freely into storm drains during rain events.

This project involves the reconstruction of commuter Parking Lot H, which is located at the southwest corner of the Belmont railroad crossing. Work includes full pavement replacement, storm sewer replacement, installation of a new and improved lighting system, installation of a bio swale median, expanded bike racks, and improved accessability. Parking will be limited during the duration of the project. Temporary off-site parking will be provided at select locations for both permit and daily-fee users. Watch for fliers and check our website at www.downers.us. Consider using the PACE Community Shuttle Service. Route 464 services the Belmont Train Station with free parking at 64th & Belmont. For more information visit www.pacebus.com.

4TH OF JULY PARADE Applications for the 4th of July Parade are available online at www.downers.us (click on Community Events) or by calling Mary Pratt at 630-434-5559. The Village invites local home owners’ associations or other neighborhood groups to participate. Applications will be accepted through June 19, 2015.

TREEGATOR® A TreeGator® is a 20-gallon plastic reservoir that attaches around the trunk of the tree. The TreeGator® is quickly and easily filled twice a week with a garden hose, and the small holes in the bottom allow water to trickle out slowly. This encourages deep root growth. Residents may have one TreeGator®, at no cost, for each new tree planted in the parkway. For more information, call Public Works at (630) 434-5460. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m Individuals with a disability requiring a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in any meeting should contact the ADA Coordinator at 630.434.5525, prior to the meeting. Wiseman, a nonprofit organization executive, has been elected the newest president of the 136-year-old non-partisan civic, cultural and philanthropic Brooke M. Wiseman organization. Wiseman is the national CEO of Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit recognized by People as its Charity of the Year in 2012, for its work of feeding 77,000 hungry children in 46 states on weekends by sending home a backpack full of food, according to the release. Earlier in her career, Wiseman was the chief development and marketing officer of the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Chicago for 16 years. Wiseman served six years as the national president of the Association of Girl Scout Executive Staff and chaired the Girl Scouts’ National Certified CEO Commission, the release stated. Chicago Falls 3-1 Away To Western New York

Stays atop NWSL standings despite having undefeated streak snapped Rochester, N.Y. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars capped off their four-game road swing with a 3-1 defeat to Western New York Flash on Saturday night. The result, which came courtesy of second-half tallies by the home side’s Sam Mewis, Elizabeth Eddy and Jamia Fields, snapped a seven-game unbeaten run for the visitors to open the season and a ten-game unbeaten run dating back to 2014. Red-hot Chicago striker Sofia Huerta bagged the late consolation goal, moments after having a penalty kick attempt saved. The game’s first promising look went to hosts Western New York in the second minute, as a corner kick from the left saw Red Stars goalkeeper Michele Dalton struggle to control the ball in traffic but then recover well to deny Mewis at the far post. The next quality chance was created by Chicago, as Vanessa DiBernardo released Huerta down the left and the striker cut to her right before releasing a powerful drive that was deflected by a defender and whistled wide of the frame. After potential goal-saving tackles by Red Stars center backs Samantha Johnson in the 22nd minute and Michelle Lomnicki in the 25th minute, teammate Alyssa Mautz nearly opened the scoring at the other end around the half-hour mark. DiBernardo picked out Arin Gilliland on the left and the rookie engaged her marker with some nice footwork, followed by a right-footed cross that found an open Mautz at the far post. The attacker was unlucky to arrive slightly late, her volleyed attempt missing just wide. The visitors had another dangerous opportunity in first-half stoppage time, as some nice interplay between Mautz and Taryn Hemmings sent the 25-year-old Mautz into the box on the right, DiBernardo nearly capitalizing on the layoff by releasing a low first-time effort that was saved by a diving Chantel Jones. While the Red Stars defense had looked solid throughout the opening period, the Flash took control after the break and put on an impressive attacking display. The first tally came courtesy of strong buildup play and a great individual effort by Mewis, rookie Fields opening up the field with an intelligent 51st-minute centering ball from the right

to Eddy and the former USC Trojan leaving it to Mewis, who dribbled past several defenders and slotted inside the right post to make it 1-0. The Flash never looked back after finding the net once, as Eddy added a goal to her assist halfway through the second period to double the home side’s advantage. Williams streaked down the right flank and sent a low cross toward the feet of the California native, who beat a defender to the ball inside the box before flicking it up to herself and then over onrushing netminder Dalton with an exquisite touch. Western New York would put the icing on the cake in the 75th minute with perhaps the most impressive of three well-taken goals. Finding herself facing the Chicago area with few options available, Fields cut to her left and fired a left-footed laser beam into the upper ninety from 30 yards out. The wonder tally was made possible by Becky Edwards, who had freed herself up with a skillful move in midfield and found her teammate with a pinpoint accurate long pass up the field. Just as it seemed the home side might be able to earn a clean sheet on top of three points, the Red Stars were awarded a penalty kick following a chaotic sequence that saw substitute forward Mary Luba go down in the area and a Flash player subsequently handle the ball. Determined to tie Crystal Dunn atop the NWSL goal-scoring charts, Chicago striker Huerta stepped up to the spot, only to see Jones dive to her right and parry the waist-high attempt wide of the post. Huerta did find the net on the ensuing corner kick. Gilliland met DiBernardo’s in-swinger with her head to rattle the crossbar, Cara Walls managing to redirect the rebound against the right post while wrestling a pair of Flash players on the doorstep, followed by a simple tap into the open net by the visitors’ most inform attacker. It would be the game’s final noteworthy action, as the NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to get back on track when they return to Benedictine University in Lisle for a June 20 blockbuster meeting with second-place Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the club’s 201

State University Foundation and the Junior League of Chicago Community Advisory Board, the release stated. She is a member of The Chicago Network, Executives Club of Chicago and the Economic Club of Chicago. A member of the Union League Club of Chicago since 2000, Wiseman has served on the club’s communications, house, admissions, and library and membership committees. Previously, she served on the club’s Board of Directors, where she chaired the member events and membership committees and led the organization’s first Diversity Task Force, according to the release. Most recently, she served as the club’s first vice president. Wiseman earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and psychology from Ball State University in 1971 and a master’s degree in communications from Michigan State University in 1979. She also holds a certificate in nonprofit management from Case Western University and has taught at the Kellogg School of Management, the Center for Non-Profit Management at Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame’s Non-Profit Executive Education program, the release stated. The Union League Club of Chicago’s members are men and women who are active proponents of the club’s commitment to community, country and culture through a broad range of public, civic, cultural and philanthropic activities that impact the Chicago metropolitan area, the state of Illinois, surrounding states and the nation, according to the release.

According to the hospital website, the addition could open to patients by May 31, 2017. The new rooms all will be energy efficient. An upgraded physical plant will help address energy and water costs, the hospital website stated. The addition is proposed to meet silver criteria outlined by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and will feature energy-efficient lighting, ultra low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency HVAC systems and state-of-the-art building automation. Officials have placed a camera on top of the physician office center on the south end of the hospital campus. Once a minute, the camera takes a photo of the construction site and posts it on the hospital website.

DOWNERS GROVE – Another great day for Kristin Lea, Caroline Hedgcock and the Downers Grove South softball team also produced payback. After having last season ended by a sectional final loss against Naperville Central, the Mustangs (36-1) turned the tables with a 9-3 rout of the Redhawks (26-9) in the Downers South sectional title game June 6. “After the upset last year, we definitely wanted to take it to them and wanted this game,” Lea said. With a school-record 77 hits and a .575 average entering the day, Lea has been the leader of a slugging offense all year. She and the Mustangs (.440 team average and 11.2 runs per game) added to their amazing 2015 feats Saturday against Bradley bound Redhawks pitcher Julie Kestas. The only thing that slowed South’s postseason momentum were thunderstorms that rolled through the area June 8 and forced a postponement of their supersectional game against Marist to June 9. Lea’s RBI double highlighted a tworun first inning against Naperville Central, and her leadoff double began a four-hit deluge in the third to stretch the lead to 5-0. An RBI triple by Lea (3 for 4, three RBIs, three runs scored) then keyed a three-run fourth inning that made it 8-0. “It’s a balance of waiting for a good pitch, then being aggressive when you get it and hitting it hard,” Lea said. Nicole Bowman had RBI singles in the third and fourth, and .532 hitter Megan LoBianco (2 for 2 with three RBIs against Central) was another star for the Mustangs. Zahrya McFarland (two hits) was on base three times and Kristen Bialek scored twice. Beyond her day at the plate, Lea denied the Redhawks with diving catches of three line drives at first base. “She hits it hard, and she’s a Gold Glove at first base,” Mustangs’ coach Ron Havelka said. “She stayed after practice yesterday and wanted balls hit at her – that’s the kind of player she is. She’s as good as they get.” That description also fits Hedgcock’s pitching. She improved to 15-0 with a 12-strikeout two-hitter, retiring the first 16 Redhawk hitters. Hedgcock

Mustangs display toughness until the end Postseason DGS ends season with 30-6 record after loss to Tigers By BILL STONE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ROMEOVILLE - With only three full-time returning starters from its 2014 sectional championship team, Downers Grove South’s baseball team had lots of work ahead when the season started. “Last year we tried to play with a lot of energy and play for each other, not for ourselves, and we carried that over,” senior shortstop Joe Engel said. With their practically new lineup, the Mustangs reached the sectional for an unprecedented third straight season but lost 3-1 against Plainfield North in the Class 4A Romeoville sectional final June 6. The Mustangs (30-6) were thwarted by pitcher Matt Vanek, who scattered five singles with one strikeout, three walks and two hit batters. “[Vanek] did a great job,” Downers South coach Darren Orel said. “The better team won today and that’s what it’s about [in the playoffs].” The Mustangs had base runners every inning and stranded three in scoring posi-

Downers Grove South’s Max Soderlund rounds third May 27 in a regional playoff game against Hinsdale South. The Mustangs fell in a sectional championship game June 6. tion. They took a 1-0 lead after senior Ryan Taylor was hit by a pitch and senior Zack Radde walked to start the bottom of the second. After senior Joe Lacivita’s sacrifice bunt, junior Ben Ficht’s ground out scored Taylor. The Tigers (30-7) responded with two runs against Zack Jones in the top of the third,

and two doubles in the fourth built a 3-1 lead. “Really, today and Hinsdale Central [a 9-1 loss May 21] were the only days the other team was just flat out better than us,” Orel said. “We were still right there. That’s the kind of toughness that these kids have shown and I really, really enjoy.”

Taylor and Engel returned as three-year starters, and catcher Danny Oriente and pitcher Pete Hamot also were varsity returners who set the tone for the Mustangs. “Tradition never graduates. Same motto and same motivations as last year,” Oriente said. “There’s no individuals on this team.” Last summer, the Mustangs reached the summer state tournament finals. This spring, they won 16 straight games and repeated as undefeated West Suburban Conference Gold champs with an 18-0 record. “When you win 30 games and you get to a sectional championship, you’ve got to be proud,” Orel said. “This group got a lot out of themselves. We had kids step up, some seniors that didn’t play last year that had big years, and we had some great pitching.” Hamot turned in a strong starting performance in a sectional semifinal, allowing just three hits and two earned runs in a 12-2, six-inning win June 3 against Downers Grove North. “Ultimately it was the mound and our defense,” Orel said. “We turned three double plays, Hamot was ahead of hitters and … he was just trying to be efficient, pitch to contact and get outs. I thought he did a great job.”

Seniors set tone for Trojans baseball in loss to DGS By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The ledger will show a 12-2 loss to end the season for Downers Grove North baseball this season, but Brendan Shanahan will have other memories. “We did pretty well as team this season,” the junior catcher said. “We won 20-something games all together. We were on a roll for a while then our bats started to cool down, but then our bats picked back up. We’ve done a lot of team bonding over the course of the season, so we’re pretty close.” The Trojans won a regional title for the second time in three seasons and finished the

season with a 24-13 record after the 12-2 loss against Downers Grove South in a sectional semifinal game June 3. Included in the win total were two wins in a three-game series against Lyons Township, a 4-2 win against fellow regional champion Naperville Central, and back-to-back shutouts to win the regional. One of those shutout wins was a 10-0 victory against rival Hinsdale Central; the Trojans won all four games against the Red Devils this season. “[It was] a resilient group. They battled. The teams playing in sectionals, they play good baseball against good teams. We did that and they have a lot to be proud of,”

head coach Chad Isaacson said. “We haven’t had many games where our oars came completely out of the water. We lost some tight ball games and we battled back. I’m proud of their efforts.” A senior-led lineup set the tone for the Trojans. “I grew up with them,” Shanahan said of the senior group. “Freshman year I got pulled up and it’s just a type of family connection. They all help each other out no matter what. It’s family through thick and thin.” Third baseman Dallton Baran was the only other everyday junior position player in addition to Shanahan. Pitcher Ryan Cantlin also was a junior.

Paul Cappetta, Ben Carlson, Myles Farley, Pat Geraghty, Brett Pyburn, Jake Stevenson and Jack Warwick were everyday seniors for North. Pitchers Ryan Andrews and Nic Laio as well as Alex Bielawa, Ben Magro and Costa Sampras also were part of the senior class. “Great senior leadership, there’s no doubt about it,” Isaacson said. “These guys led the way. The countless hours these guys did the little things without me pressing them in order to get better and better, they’ve done it. That’s the leadership and guidance those guys have given. They’ve competed every single day, and that’s what we ask.”

cut short for Benet baseball

By PATRICK Z. McGAVIN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com

LA GRANGE PARK – Benet’s baseball team was riding the momentum and eager to play out its destiny. After storming back from a 5-1 deficit to beat Glenbard South in a sectional semifinal, the Redwings looked to stay hot but cooled off against Nazareth on June 6. Benet managed just two hits in falling to the East Suburban Catholic Conference rival Roadrunners 10-1 in a Class 3A sectional title. “In ... any kind of a tournament like this, there is only going to be one team in the end that stand outs,” Benet coach Scott Lawler said. “Today was our day to gas out.” The Redwings (20-18) were swept by the Roadrunners, having lost both regular-season meetings. An omen was marked from the start. Center fielder Connor Hickey opened the game with a sharp liner into left field. Moments later, he was caught in a rundown. “We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalized on them,” Lawler said. Starter Mike Powers started strong by retiring the side in the first. Nazareth’s deep lineup pounded out 13 hits against four different pitchers. “It seemed like they were all one-two counts and all of a sudden, they’d pop it out into the outfield,” Lawler said. The Redwings averted the shutout as Danny Sobolewski drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning. Nazareth ace Donald Kelly (8-2) struck out six. Before the bottom fell out, the deep tournament run helped make up for a lackluster regular season. “We hit the ball hard the whole year, but it was always right at people,” Hickey said. “Then they started to fall and we got some incredible pitching performances and timely hitting.”
