WOODRIDGE – The Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District recently was bumped up to a Public Protection Class 2 rating by the Insurance Services Office, putting it in the top 2 percent in the nation for its ability to respond to emergencies, according to a district news release. Since 1992, the district had been rated as a Public Protection Class 3 organization with the last rating done in 2005, the release stated.

Of the 2,408 fire protection agencies in Illinois, Darien-Woodridge is now among 71 that hold a Class 2 rating, according to the release. Nationwide, there are 917 Class 2 departments out of the 49,000 agencies that the Insurance Services Office rates. There are only three agencies that have a Class 1 rating in Illinois, the release stated. The evaluation process examines water supply, training, vehicle and station locations, dispatch, fire prevention and public education among other

areas, according to the release. Homeowners in parts of Darien, Woodridge and unincorporated DuPage County near Downers Grove have the potential to save on their insurance premiums as a result of the new rating, the release stated. Business and commercial property owners also can expect a significant decrease. The report from the evaluation will be studied to identify and make changes to areas that can be improved, provided those areas are something the district has control over, according to the release.

Bolingbrook students continue school’s prairie restoration SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – Thanks to a grant, Bolingbrook High School students and staff have continued to restore the high school’s prairie along Lily Cache Lane this summer, according to a school news release. The 2015 Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant will help restore more native plants to the 12-acre natural area on campus, increase biodiversity in both flora and fauna and

stop further degradation of the site by invasive species, according to the release. It was made possible by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Jadel Youth Fund, Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation, Illinois Conservation Foundation, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services’ Partners for Fish and Wildlife. The goal of the project is to utilize the site as an educational resource for the benefit of both Bolingbrook High

School students and the community, according to the release. The multiyear project already has benefited more than 2,000 students through cooperative learning, helping them tackle real-world questions, issues and controversies, the release stated. They are collaborating within and beyond the classroom, developing environmental literacy, constructing explanations and developing solutions for everyday problems, the release stated.

He asked me if it was OK if he used the robotic arm, and I told him, ‘Whatever, you’re the doctor,’” she said with a laugh. “I wasn’t nervous at all. I knew he was well-trained, and I respect technology. I’m pleased I was the first one and that it was so successful.” Luu said the robotic arm allows for more precise positioning of the hip replacement components. “The robotic arm allows surgeons to take out the exact amount of bone that’s necessary, and we’re able to put the replacement components exactly where we want them to be,” he said. “When we do it manually, sometimes it’s not in the exact spot where we want them to be.” He said there are many benefits for the patients who receive robotic-assist-

ed surgery, including a faster recovery. “Hip replacements are becoming less invasive, which means there’s less damage to soft tissue and the robotic arm lowers the risk for dislocation,” he said. “It helps with leg length because sometimes after this surgery one leg is slightly longer, and the robotic arm minimizes this. It also minimizes wear and tear of the implant because it’s in a more precise spot.” Luu recently saw Van Veen and said he was impressed with her progress. “She was very excited about the technology and worked very hard in therapy,” he said. “She wanted to recover as quickly as possible, and she did. She’s done very well and did a spectacular job with rehabilitation. I want to continue doing more surgeries using this technology.” Van Veen is excited to talk to anyone who’s considering hip replacement

She said her experience with the robotic-assisted surgery was so good that she encourages everyone to ask their doctor about it. “The robotic arm is cutting-edge technology that works,” she said. “I feel so fortunate that I found Dr. Luu. I’m not sure anyone else would do this type of surgery, and I wouldn’t have the same recovery. I got a great longterm investment, and I feel so much younger now.” Van Veen said before her surgery, she felt “120 years old.” She said she had to give up gardening, which was one of her favorite hobbies. “Before I had my hip replaced, I wasn’t able to do things I enjoy; I was just miserable,” she said. “I couldn’t walk my dog and couldn’t do a lot of things. To get that all back so quickly, it was just a gift.”

WOODRIDGE – Just two days after having her left hip replaced, Susan Van Veen was climbing stairs, and the Woodridge resident credits cutting-edge surgical advances for her remarkable progress after the major surgery. Van Veen, 67, was the first patient at the University of Chicago Medicine to have Stryker Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery. She said the new technology was the reason she was able to get back on her feet so quickly after her December 2014 surgery. “I was walking the next day, and my body didn’t feel as torn up like it did with the first hip surgery,” said Van Veen, who had her right hip replaced 13 years ago. “The difference between the two surgeries is day and night, both the pain and recovery. The robotic technology is really interesting.” Van Veen recently attended an unveiling of the robotic arm this month at the University of Chicago Medicine to media and area residents. Van Veen, who is the executive director of the Chicago-based nonprofit Bridge to Success, said the recovery after her first hip replacement was much more difficult. She said she had to stay in the hospital several more days and was out of work for a much longer time. “I was out of work for four months when I had my first hip replaced compared to two months this time,” she said. “It was a longer rehab and I needed more physical therapy, and I was on a cane for five months. I was back to work in two months this time. It’s so nice to get my life back and get back to moving as quickly as I did.” Dr. Hue Luu, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Chicago, performed Van Veen’s surgery. It was the first time he’d ever used the robotic arm for a hip replacement. Van Veen said she wasn’t worried about being

Hundreds of mourners, well-wishers and supporters waited in line and packed the church July 25 to honor the memory of Sandra “Sandy” Bland, a Naperville native whose arrest and death in a Texas jail cell drew national attention. The Rev. Theresa Dear said there was much to be celebrated about Bland’s life – including her stand against the police officer who arrested her. “We celebrate that she found her voice, and she found her purpose in social justice,” Dear said. “We celebrate the fact that she walked and lived in her truth. We celebrate that Sandy Bland was ... a young lady who refused to be subdued and silenced.” Bland, 28, was found dead July 13 in a Texas jail cell three days after she

A search firm working for Community High School District 99 has set Dec. 14 as the anticipated date for the Board of Education to hire the next superintendent. Thomas Madden and Kathryn Robbins of School Exec Connect said during the board’s July 20 meeting that would be the scheduled date for the board to ratify a contract with the new head administrator. Madden said the firm will start posting the job the first week of August. The firm will collect applications through mid-October and select the 20 most qualified candidates to interview. It then will narrow the candidate pool to six candidates who will be interviewed by the board. The board tentatively will interview the candidates Oct. 19 in a closed-session meeting before choosing three finalists to interview again with other district stakeholders. Those interviews tentatively are

planned for Oct. 26. Superintendent Mark McDonald will retire from the district after the 2015-16 school year. Robbins said there will be online surveys, focus groups and a community forum to get feedback on what different groups are looking for in the next superintendent. “We definitely want the community input,” board member Michael Davenport said. “This is meaningful to us.” Madden said the search will be confidential, which will help ensure the district gets the best applicants. Only the name of the person hired will be revealed. Board President Nancy Kupka said the board would like to hire a sitting superintendent. “We feel, and maybe we’re a little naive, but we think this is kind of a powerhouse of a district,” she said. Board member Rick Pavinato agreed and said he doesn’t think the district should hire someone to “cut their teeth” on the job.

Regina Johnson Bland family friend knew her for several years, described her as someone who was always happy and smiling. She didn’t believe Bland would take her own life and described the situation as shocking. Johnson said she believed the entire community would remember this forever, and she was amazed by the support surrounding Bland’s arrest and death by people from across the nation. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Johnson said at the wake. “There are so many people in there saying they didn’t even know her. They just came.”

VILLAGE MOVES TO INVIGORATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION

LONG RANGE PLAN MEETINGS

The Village Council established the Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation at the July 21, 2015, meeting. Seven subcommittee members have been appointed to work with the existing ADRB members. The goal of the subcommittee is to increase the number of properties designated as landmarks and districts under the Historic Preservation Ordinance. Since the adoption of the ordinance in 2007, only two properties have sought and received landmark status: 5256 Carpenter Street (pictured) and 4943 Highland Avenue.

Long-Range Plan Infrastructure Trends & Issues Solutions & Strategies 2015

The ADRB and subcommittee will discuss and consider changes to the ordinance. Discussions will include the process for landmarking a structure or creating a Historic District, the regulations for new and existing structures in Historic Districts and for alterations to landmarked structures. Regulations for the demolition of landmarked structures or existing structures in Historic Districts will also be considered.

The topic for the August 18, 2015, meeting will be Council Priority Action Items: Review and Prioritization/Summary of Council Direction during LRP.

The ADRB and subcommittee will also discuss and consider ways to enhance public awareness and understanding of the ordinance, explore ways to assist property owners with the application process and consider incentives.

WATER RESTRICTIONS

Plans have been made for the ADRB and subcommittee to meet together twice a month from August through October. The group is charged with delivering any proposed ordinance changes or recommendations to the Village Council by October 31, 2015, to increase the number of landmarked properties or districts.

From May 15 to September 15 residents can use outdoor water based on an even/odd system. The last digit of an address determines the day. If your address ends in an even number, you can water on even calendar days; if your address ends in an odd number, you can water on odd calendar days.

Schedule of Meetings The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the ADRB and Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation meetings, which will be held on the following Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue: August 5, August 19, September 2, September 16, October 7, and October 21.

Time to have a debate on future of Illinois “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s two different worldviews.” – State Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields

… and it’s about time! For decades, there’s been only one worldview in Springfield: that of House Speaker Mike Madigan. Madigan has been COMMUNITY Speaker of the House since I VOICE was 6 years old. (I’m now 38.) Peter The visible results of that Breen worldview are easily seen. One recent study, by George Mason University, ranked the fiscal condition of the 50 states. From not having a balanced budget to not having enough cash to meet either short-term or long-term commitments, Illinois came in dead last, 50 out of 50. One example of this was laid out in a symposium in January on public pensions, where professor Robert Inman of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School observed “Chicago’s unfunded [pension] liabilities are 10 times its revenues. Just assume that they’re going to have to pay 5 percent of that [annually]. That means you’re looking at 50 percent of their cash that will have to go to pensions.” As we trudge through these long hot days of summer, these “two worldviews” are why the government of Illinois is in shutdown mode, and the General Assembly deadlocked with Gov. Bruce Rauner. This new “worldview” of the governor isn’t radical by any stretch. He’s proposing measures to reduce the costs of doing business in Illinois, and to streamline and reform all levels of state and local government. He’s also put forward term limits and ending the partisan process of drawing political districts, in hopes of finally and permanently breaking the power of career politicians to control state government. You don’t have to agree with the governor and each of his policy prescriptions in order to appreciate that we finally have competing visions of government in Illinois. It’s time for a robust debate on the critical issues facing us as a state – and may the best ideas and solutions win. The sad reality is that the governor’s reform measures are drafted, filed, and pending in the House Rules Committee, waiting to be released. However, Speaker Madigan and his majority caucus won’t allow these measures to be debated. And so, we’re shut down. And mired in crisis. Let’s have the debate, and out of that debate will come compromise. If not, then let the people vote out those who refuse to work for their best interests. There’s no Greece-style bailout on the horizon. There are no easy solutions. Just hard work – if we’re allowed to do it.

Bland family shouldn’t have to wait forever for the truth When a tragic death is compounded by a sense that it was a result of rank injustice, combined with a long history of similar injustices committed against the black community, the grieving that follows is understandably tinged with anger. And there’s no doubt that the family, friends and neighbors of Sandra Bland have every right to be angry. Even if it’s proved conclusively that the Naperville resident did commit suicide in a Texas jail cell, the video of her traffic stop and arrest show an interaction with a police officer going terribly wrong, and seemingly through no fault of her own. Remember, too, that this video is the last footage her family will ever see of her. In her last moments of freedom she was being intimidated, treated like a criminal – all, supposedly, over an improper signal for a lane change. But while everyone who knew and loved Sandra Bland is undoubtedly angry now, and will be for some time to come, the focus of her funeral services July 25 at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle

was on who she was, and what a loss that is for that community. It would have been easy to play to the assembled cameras, to make inflammatory remarks, to make the gathering about the speakers instead of the departed and her loved ones. Any such urge was for the most part resisted, and that’s more than admirable. It’s astonishing. Sandra Bland’s family has shown remarkable patience, even as they’ve firmly demanded real answers from the Waller County, Texas, officials about what happened. Their respectful determination gives great weight to their point of view. We should not expect them to be patient or even respectful forever, however. The black community in this country is accustomed to dirty dealing and mistruths from officials, and they’ll be watching out for that, as well they should be. Hoping for justice is probably too much to expect in a case like this. It’s already an injustice, no matter what happens next. But we do hope that the full, complete and unaltered truth will come out of Waller County, whatever that truth may be.

Fuller House proves worthy newcomer HINSDALE – It didn’t take long for the newly opened Fuller House to distinguish itself from other restaurants in downtown Hinsdale. A large and lively outdoor patio set the scene before my date and I entered an equally vibrant pub atmosphere. Greeted just inside the front door by the hostess, we first noticed the expansive bar centered on the ground floor of the two-story establishment. With the restaurant just a stone’s throw from the train station, it simply screams to be a gathering spot for the after-work crowd. Fuller House offers a variety of specialty cocktails, plus a solid craft beer selection we enjoyed sampling. Hungrily taking up our menus, we scanned the wide array of salads, pizzas, burgers and other hand-held items, opting for an appetizer to start. We considered the woodfired pretzel sticks with honey mustard and pimento cheese sauces, as well as a cheese and charcuterie plate, before settling on Wisconsin cheese curds with a zesty Southwest ranch dipping sauce. Lightly breaded and fried to a perfect crispiness outside, the curds had a wonderful texture. Several main courses tickled our fancies. My date contemplated the fried buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese crumbles, along with several of the wood-fired pizzas prepared in the blazing oven in plain sight on the edge of the dining area. She ultimately decided on the 10inch arugula and prosciutto pizza with lemon, garlic and an olive oil drizzle. None of the flavors were hidden – the earthy taste of the arugula, the saltiness of the prosciutto and the creaminess of fresh mozzarella – all intertwined in a delightful combination. Nearly every entree sounded appetizing to me, including the fish and chips, brisket tacos and pulled pork sandwich, but the burgers were

Abundance of offseason sports gives athletes plenty of options

devote to watching prospects in person. There also are NCAA restrictions regarding the amount of contact coaches can have with players at certain times, restrictions that are lessened during the summer, and since college coaches aren’t busy coaching their teams they are able to flock to the large tournaments and watch hundreds of the best players from across the country compete. The invite-only Beverly Bandits 16U team is an extreme example of a travel team. In addition to players from south suburban Chicago and northwest Indiana, the Bandits have players that hail from Indianapolis, northern Wisconsin, Virginia and West Virginia. With so many far-flung players, practice during the summer is nearly nonexistent. “In the summer it’s usually just [playing on] weekends,” said Ron Havelka, who coaches Downers Grove South softball in the spring and is an assistant with the Bandits in the summer. Not all high-level teams eschew practice time. The Mercury Elite hold practices two or three times a week, which aids in skill development and team development. Longshots baseball works on position-specific skills during fall practices and has a winter program three days per week.

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com It used to be that elite high school athletes had three jerseys in their closets – one for a fall sport, one for a winter sport, and one for a spring sport. Many high school athletes today still have three jerseys in the closet, but increasingly those jerseys are home and away high school jerseys for one sport and a uniform for a club team in that same sport. More and more high school athletes are choosing to specialize in one sport with year-round competition aided by a plethora of AAU and club programs. The downside is fewer well-rounded athletes representing their high schools, but there are plenty of benefits for high school athletes willing to specialize in one sport by playing for clubs and on AAU teams in the offseason.

Options abound

Sports Performance is one of the elite volleyball clubs in the country. Its 18U red team won an AAU national title in June. But it’s not just volleyball players who have a plethora of competition options in the offseason and are benefiting from extra coaching. AAU basketball is busy in the summer with players competing in tournaments across the country on area teams such as Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite for boys and Illinois Lady Lightning for girls. Mercury Elite has several boys teams at multiple age levels plus three girls teams at the 14U level, a far cry from when the program first started nine years ago. “In the last three years, it’s gone from probably three to four teams to where it is now with 19 teams,” said founder Dave Ruggles, whose program has players from across the suburbs. “We started with one team and we grew it from there.” Traveling teams also are huge for baseball, softball and soccer players, and the competition just as fierce. Some soccer players choose to forgo their high school teams altogether and focus solely on club ball. Top Tier Baseball draws heavily from Chicago and the suburbs but also includes some players from downstate

“I get a lot of instruction and all the [29ers] coaches are quality guys.” The Beverly Bandits, Downers Grove Rebels, Illinois Chill and Lemont Rockers are just a few of the many travel softball programs that feature players from throughout the suburbs.

Benefits and drawbacks

For the athletes, there are obvious benefits to devoting time to a club team in the offseason. Those benefits include more hands-on coaching, time to work and improve on specific skills, and a chance to play against elite competition in front of college coaches. In baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball, the college and high school seasons run concurrently, which limits the amount of time college coaches can

to stay competitive in their sports in between high school seasons, each one offering a little something different. Some programs focus on playing in highly-competitive tournaments with the thought being the competition will make players better, while other programs balance skill development and live competition. There is something to be gained from staying sharp in the offseason and playing outside of high school, and there are some tangible benefits in the form of college opportunities, but that’s for each athlete to decide. “If you want to test yourself against the kind of competition you see at the AAU level, it’s going to give you an edge as a player,” said Jim Thomas, boys varsity basketball coach at Downers Grove North and a 17U coach with Mercury Elite. “But I don’t tell the kids at Downers North they have to play.”

Athletes who decide to specialize in one sport have plenty of options to choose from. Club and AAU teams not only offer top-notch competition, but the chance to get noticed by coaches at the college level. Here are some of the organizations in the area that provide playing opportunities outside of high school and junior high.

Softball

Bandits softball, which includes the Beverly Bandits locally, has invite-only teams across the country. Illinois Chill is more local with players such as Sam Schmidt (Willowbrook) and Caroline Hedgcock (Downers Grove South) but plays in tournaments throughout the country. The Lemont Rockers and Downers Grove Rebels are programs that feature several local players.

Baseball

Longshots Baseball, based in Downers Grove, has sent hundreds of players to college programs in 22 years of operation. Based out of Acceleration Sports Performance in Naperville, 29ers Baseball has a local flair. Top Tier, which bases its high school program at The Max in McCook, and DuPage Training Academy in Carol Stream draw from across the western suburbs.

The 2014 Downers Grove South graduate will host a three-day basketball camp with all proceeds going to raise pancreatic cancer awareness. It’s a cause close to his heart – his mother died from pancreatic cancer when he was 10 – but the camp is all about having fun and teaching the game. “Basically, we’re trying to make it

Though the camp is raising money for a serious cause, the atmosphere at the camp will remain light. “I’ve always loved basketball, so I thought why not do something with basketball,” Spinuzza said. “I always wanted to run a camp and it’s something my friends like to do, too. “We’re trying to get kids outside and help them stay healthy. You’re outside for two-and-a-half hours playing basketball. It’s fun.”

The AAU basketball scene has grown significantly in relevance in the past 20 years and a number of locally based teams are part of that growth. On the girls side, Lady Lightning is one of the premier programs. It starts with programs beginning in third grade and goes all the way through high school. Lady Lightning had 11 players make college commitments in the Class of 2015. As for the boys, Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Wolves and Mercury Elite all have local players. Lockdown was founded in 2011 by Joe Niego, who is a former NBA player. The Illinois Wolves also have a local tie with Mike Mullins founding the organization in 1999. Mullins had two sons, Bryan and Brendan, play at Downers Grove South before going on to play, and now coach, college basketball. Wheaton resident
