FORMER PRO IMPARTS LIFE’S LESSONS TO YOUTH

Brent Reese-Hackett once scored 73 points in a high-school basketball game. He went on to play 2 ½ years of professional basketball in Lithuania’s top basketball league. Now, he spends his time teaching youth such lessons as discipline and purpose which can be learned through sports but apply to success in life. As a recreation leader for Shawnee County Parks + Recreation, Reese-Hackett runs Central Park Community Center. He will share with youth who come into the center the same lessons he teaches in his “Clinic 73” basketball training program outside of work. He gives as an example a 6’ 3” middle school student who attends school for a half-day and then comes over to the community center. The student could be one of the best high school basketball players in Topeka, but doesn’t want to go into the gym. Reese-Hackett tells him, “Next year is high school. Your window of opportunity starts. Every day it shrinks.”

He also shows the youth how, after he and Reese-Hackett have played ping pong for two weeks, their skills at the game have improved. When they practice, they get better. This follows the two key messages Reese-Hackett teaches: To succeed in life, you must develop discipline and confidence. Lose either and you forfeit your window of opportunity to be great. He spares nothing in teaching youth. When they ask why he didn’t play in the NBA he tells them that he lost his discipline. He let college, girls, cars, money and other things distract him. But, he harbors no bitterness as he watches his friends play basketball on television. He knows his mistakes and he knows what his friends did to be successful. When his pro team could no longer make its payroll, ReeseHackett returned home to Texas where he grew up with former the University of Kansas star Keith Langford and Keith’s brother

Kevin. Having landed a lucrative contract to play in Italy, Keith Langford wanted to give back to the Fort Worth community. So, they held tryouts for ReeseHackett to build and coach an AAU team with Langford as the sponsor. Tryouts yielded so many players that they created two teams. For Reese-Hackett, a new career training youth to have a purpose and learn to use their gym time wisely had begun. “A lot of kids, the first thing they do when they come into the gym is shoot three pointers,” he explains. “I’ve broken down the process of what you should do from the time you come in to the time you leave.” He doesn’t divulge his “secret sauce” but, it boils down to five areas that include developing athletic ability, skills and shooting. All five are taught in every session so that the players know what to do on their own in between training sessions. They must put in time in all five areas.

“I TRY TO CREATE A WORK ETHIC AND CONFIDENCE THAT YOU CAN DEVELOP ON THE BASKETBALL COURT AND USE IN EVERYDAY LIFE.”

THE GUIDE 2018 WINTER/SPRING

5

“We can teach someone how to shoot, but, you have to be able to get by somebody,” he says, illustrating how players have to develop a full set of skills. When it comes to practice, he calls repetition the “father” of learning. He cites author Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule which proposes that to truly master something, a person must practice the skill for 10,000 hours.

“TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WINDOWS WHEN YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY. EVERY DAY, YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO BE GREAT SHRINKS.” “There isn’t a certain number you have to follow,” Reese-Hackett says. “Your rep count might be different than the next person’s. You just know you have to put in the time.” He adds, “If you want to do it, that’s one thing. If someone’s making you do it, that’s another.” In other words, he can help any player improve, but there will be a marked difference between the skill of the player who really loves the game and the one who is playing because his father wanted him to play. “I try to create a work ethic and confidence that you can develop on the basketball court and use in everyday life,” Reese-Hackett says. Local youth are unaware that Reese-Hackett holds Texas’ high school record for points scored in a two-game period (125) and they don’t know much about his pro career. But, through his training program, his reputation is growing. He tells the youth that basketball isn’t about going to the NBA or being a pro athlete. It is about life lessons and opportunities such as meeting people who could help his career and getting to travel to places in the world he would never have seen. “I had the chance to be successful because of my ability to make a shot,” he tells them, adding the cautionary note, “My window of success as a player is closed, but now I have a greater opportunity.” That opportunity is to teach youth to “take advantage of windows when you have the opportunity. Every day, your opportunity to be great shrinks.”

Bright Circle is a KDHE licensed preschool program serving children 3-5 years old. We’ve been educating preschool-aged children for more than 35 years! We believe that children learn best through the natural play environment. The early years of a child’s life are most important because that is when the characteristics of their personalities and their own self-image develop. We strive to provide appropriate activities to develop each child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. Through these activities, children are encouraged to learn through play, and develop their skills through self-learning, peer education and teacher-directed activities. We value not just learning, but the love of learning as well. In order to ensure individual attention, class size is limited to 15 students. A $35 non-refundable registration is required; tuition of $11 per day is collected at the beginning of each month. Velma K. Weekly themes combined with a research-based curriculum ensure that children are having fun while learning and being prepared for kindergarten. Play and positive interaction with teachers and other children support social, emotional and intellectual growth. Special curriculum components encourage nutrition, physical fitness and socio-emotional growth. Our program spans all areas of a child’s development, offering a well-rounded, highquality learning experience. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 children per session. We have two classrooms that are located in the Shawnee North Community Center. Parents are our partners and are encouraged to participate in classroom activities. Parent/teacher conferences are held twice each year where parents help develop their child’s Individual Education Plan. Developmental assessments are conducted twice each year and children who are kindergarten-bound have an additional school-readiness assessment. Children must be 3 years old and fully potty trained to participate.

To help you enhance your experience in our parks, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation looked at several sources to figure how many calories you might burn in various exercise activities. First, how many calories you burn exercising depends on your age, weight and gender. A site from Health Status http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc offers a Calories Burned Calculator into which you can put your own personal profile. Here are the number of calories you burn in 30 minutes of walking, running and cycling according to a chart from Harvard Health Publications (http://www.health.harvard.edu/diet-and-weightloss/calories-burned-in-30-minutes-of-leisure-and-routine-activities):

Walking 3.5 mph (17 min/mile)

Running 7.7 mph (9 min/mile)

Cycling 14.9-15.9 mph

Weight Loss If you are interested in weight loss, according to Mayo Clinic’s website, 3,500 calories equals about one pound of fat, so you need to burn 3,500 more calories than you take in to lose 1 pound. “So if you cut 500 calories from your diet each day, you’d lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories),” according to the website. The website notes that both diet and exercise are important for losing weight. The key is to consume fewer calories than you burn. Aerobic exercise is most important, but physical activity has a stronger effect in preventing weight regain. Whatever activity you choose, do it regularly. Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity — preferably spread throughout the week. Keep in mind that you may need more physical activity to lose weight and keep it off. Studies show that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long term get regular physical activity.
