REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE

It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation (SCP+R) to offer a refund and/or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds.

CANCELLATION

Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R. Sports Leagues and Clinics, Programs.

ROOM RENTALS

Refunds will be issued with a 20% cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least 21 days prior to the program start date. Cancellations less than 21 days prior to the start date will receive a 50 percent account credit. Account credit shall be utilized within twelve 12 months.

SHELTER RENTALS AND OLD PRAIRIE TOWN/WARD-MEADE

Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least 60 days prior to the reservation. Cancellations less than 60 days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50 percent account credit. No account credit will be issued if cancellation is less than seven days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy. Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

CAMPGROUND

All campground fees are non-refundable including unused reservations.

THESE MARTIANS HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR

As a coach, it is often a force of habit to ask players “Can everyone hear me?” It’s a purely innocuous question. Players can almost always hear you. They may not always be listening, but they can hear you. Then again, that’s not always the case. Brothers Bryson and Brecken (Ben) Hale and Brody Hunninghake all played on the Mead Martians youth baseball team for Shawnee County Parks + Recreation this season. They smile and laugh and play (sometimes in the dirt) just like the other players on the team. There is only one difference. The boys are deaf. With the help of sign language interpreter Heather MacLaren, as well as active and involved parents (David and Sara Hale, along with Chris and Amanda Hunninghake), the boys were able to participate just like the other 227 other kids in the Coach Pitch/T-Ball leagues with SCP+R. After a few practices, the Mead Martians played a five-game schedule in the Shawnee North league. The Martians were one of six teams in the league, while 14 teams played in the league across town at Felker Park. The Martians team roster included 12 players: Lennon, Caden, Emilya (Emmy), Brecken (Ben), Bryson, George, Brody, Blane, Bentley, Abel, Andrew (Whoppie) and Angelika (Geli).

As coach of the Martians, I would like to say thank you to all of the players and parents for a fun season. In particular, Ben, Bryson and Brody taught me a few things this season. FIRST: High fives are universal. SECOND: When you do a good thing, celebrate it. It may be a home run in the World Series or a dribbler down the third base line. But raise those arms in triumph and smile every time, Brody. Learning to drop the bat before running to first can wait until next season, I guess. THIRD: Talk to them. I don’t know sign language and they knew that. But talking doesn’t always require words. It might be giving a thumbs up or getting them to flap their arms like a bird in the batter’s box to get them to relax. They may not be able to hear you, but they’re listening.

Updating parks, fixing a favorite fishing hole and adding a new adventure

n the past three years, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation has added a new aquatics center that gained national attention, two completely renovated ballfields and a popular spray park in Dornwood Park and it just opened the new Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove. Less spectacular but every bit as important is the effort spent on maintaining the department’s existing parks and facilities. There are 140 park properties that must be maintained. They include community centers, aquatic centers and swimming pools, shelter houses, public gardens, lakes and ponds, trails, ballfields, playgrounds and even traffic islands. All of the aforementioned park amenities age and, just like a person’s home, require maintenance. SCP+R’s Master Plan calls for identifying and upgrading five to eight parks each year. With public input, an individual management plan for each park is developed to serve park users. A recent example is Hillcrest Park. Hillcrest Pool, once state-of-the-art, now has 40 feet of new shade structure, a new children’s slide, an Aqua Zip’n feature and a new exterior fence. The pool’s bathhouse now has a sound system, and new benches and doors. The park has new outdoor fitness equipment, a new playground structure, new security lighting and the community’s first Futsal court. Public input is being taken into what the Hillcrest Community Center should become in the future. Plans are underway to upgrade neighborhood parks as well, but SCP+R’s maintenance needs go far deeper. Retired engineer Jim Martin of the SCP+R Advisory Board dedicated hundreds of hours to a plan identifying $1.25 million in annual maintenance needs for the department. Repairing sidewalks, broken concrete on trails, fixing soffits on community centers and replacing worn-out carpet are not flashy items, but they are important to the park patron’s experience and to protecting the public’s investment in our parks. “What matters to the public is each individual or family’s experience in our parks and facilities,” says John Knight, SCP+R director. This is SCP+R’s focus as the department puts to work $3 million in deferred maintenance funds awarded to it by Shawnee County. “Keeping parks and facilities in good repair, upgrading them as needed and even replacing or converting facilities to keep up with today’s desires for recreational facilities is critical to maintaining the quality of life in our community,” Knight says. The funds will go quickly, replacing worn-out and rusting park benches, picnic tables and playground equipment. Playground surfaces need to be repaired. Riparian buffers need to be installed to control runoff into park ponds that cause algae blooms that can be harmful to fish, pets and humans. In short, sidewalks that need repairs, park equipment that has deteriorated for decades, access to fishing and boating areas and aging community centers are in need of repair for Shawnee County to continue to have the kind of parks system in which our community can take pride.

Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail Regular walkers in Gage Park now have a safer place to get in their daily stroll. The 2-mile Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail now encircles the park, winding through tree-lined paths and across the Westlake pond. The first half of the trail was created by the City of Topeka as it completed work on Gage Boulevard and SW 10th Street. A grant from the Sunflower Foundation made possible the west side of the trail along Westchester and a grant from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism allowed the completion of the north side of the trail. The trail serves residents of surrounding neighborhoods, employees of nearby businesses and visitors to the park.

Lake Shawnee Jr. gets major facelift A favorite fishing spot for youth and seniors received a muchneeded redo this summer thanks to the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Foundation. The banks of Lake Shawnee Jr. had been eroding and silting in the shallow fishing pond. Bartlett & West of Topeka led a redesign that included a concrete block wall around the edges of the pond, adding an ADA accessible path around the pond plus a waterfall feature with stepping stones to allow park patrons to walk across in front of it.

Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove The much anticipated Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove opened in July attracting patrons of all ages. Paddle boats themed after dragons, pirate ships, swans, ducks and more are family favorites. Canoes and kayaks have made their requested Lake Shawnee comeback at the cove. The more adventurous souls opt for water trikes and paddle boards. The various watercraft rent for $8-$12 per half-hour â&#x20AC;&#x201C; long-enough to test the stamina of most paddle boaters. The watercraft were chosen for the Adventure Cove based on surveys of school students and an online survey of the general community. Future additions to the Adventure Cove could include a floating playground and water quality improvements that will once again allow swimming.

Passersby who fished the pond as children or who brought the children or grand children to fish at Lake Shawnee Jr. anxiously watched the progress and voiced their excitement for the project. The pond now includes memorial benches that may be purchased in the name of loved ones. Call Rachel Meyer at 785-251-6885.

Besides drawing in local residents, SCP+R hopes that the Adventure Cove will attract families of ball players in town for weekend tournaments at Bettis Family Sports Complex and the Lake Shawnee Girls Softball Complex.

Wander through fields that are being restored to native prairie, and see the rare cross-section of the Calhoun Formation. Dornwood Park is located at 2500 SE Highland Ave. The walk will commence at the gate leading to the nature trails located at the far east end of the Dornwood parking lot where SE 25th St. dead ends. Dornwood trails are unimproved and feature varied terrain. Hiking shoes are recommended. No flip-flops. Trail walk will cover approximately one mile. Trail conditions will vary depending on weather. Please bring your own water, sunscreen and insect repellent as needed. There are no restroom facilities available in the Nature Area but, facilities are available at the Dornwood sports complex. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Walk will be rescheduled for in the event of rain.

YOUTH Winter Basketball League

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s nearly 60 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are 30 miles of paved trails and nearly 28 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible. Shunga Trail – 8.5-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at Crestview Park (near SW 27th and Fairlawn) and continuing east to SE 2nd. The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka.

Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail – 2-mile paved trail encircling Gage Park.

Lake Shawnee Trail – 7-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake. Dornwood Nature Trail – 9.9 miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trail accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80-acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four singletrack loop trails comprising 4.47 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas offering the most panoramic views of Shawnee County from the famed Burnett’s Mound.

Orville Rice Nature Trail – 1-mile mowed grass single track trail following Shunga Creek from SW Gage to the Shunga Trail near McDonald Field.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here. Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails. Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and wooded areas. The first quarter-mile is asphalt paved for accessibility. Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Oakland-Billard/Santa Fe Park Trails – 1.6 miles of paved trail. Freedom Valley – .75-mile concrete path. Clarion Woods Trail – 1.54 miles of singletrack trail through a red cedar forest. Betty Phillips Park – .44-mile paved trail. Brookfield Park – .3-mile paved trail.

TDC’s Creative Learning Adventures is a statelicensed preschool program serving children ages 3-5 years, August through May. TDC Learning Centers, Inc. has been providing highquality, affordable early education in the Topeka community for 55 years! Weekly themes combined with a research-based curriculum ensure that children are having fun while learning and being prepared for kindergarten. Play and positive interaction with teachers and other children support social, emotional and intellectual growth. Special curriculum components encourage nutrition, physical fitness and socio-emotional growth. Our program spans all areas of a child’s development, offering a well-rounded, high-quality learning experience. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 children per session. We have two classrooms that are located in the Shawnee North Community Center. Parents are our partners and are encouraged to participate in classroom activities. Parent/teacher conferences are held twice each year where parents help develop their child’s Individual Education Plan. Developmental assessments are conducted twice each year and children who are kindergarten-bound have an additional school readiness assessment. Established in 1963, the 2.5 acre Ward-Meade Botanical Garden contains approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs plus annual flowers planted each year. The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants. It features a National Hosta Display Garden and National Day Lily Display Garden. The area has three water gardens including Anna’s Asian Reading Garden, a stream, a bridge, a gazebo and waterfall. Weddings can be held at this location as well. The following meal programs include two hours room rental. Ward Cabin Hearth Meals This unique meal is one of the more popular activities at Old Prairie Town, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at fireside tables in the Ward cabin, and diners are treated to special hearthcooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all provided by costumed volunteers. These family style meals are offered from October 15 through March 15 with reservations for groups of 12-18. Menu 1 $20 per person Hearth-cooked ham or smoked turkey, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, fruit, Dutch oven baked biscuits, hearth-baked molasses cookies, old-fashioned ice cream, cider and coffee. Victorian Dinner $27 per person For a change of pace, enjoy this delightful Victorian meal served buffetstyle in the elegant dining room of the 1870’s mansion. Choice of entree includes baked ham with cherry sauce or brandicot chicken served with salad, vegetable, potatoes, freshly baked bread and old-fashioned ice cream. Celebrate your child’s birthday in a historic yet exciting way. Choose from two party packages. Parties include a volunteer in period costume to lead the party as well as set-up and clean-up. Parties are two hours in length and can be booked any day of the week throughout the year except holidays. Old-Fashioned Birthday Party (Ages 6–12 yrs.) $10 per participant. Minimum 10. Maximum 15. This party is held in our one-room country schoolhouse with oldfashioned turn-of-the century fun. This party includes a “session” with the schoolmarm playing old time games. Children’s Victorian Tea Party (Ages 6-12 yrs.) $10 per participant. Your child and guests get to dress up in costumes from a “surprise trunk” and will be treated to an elegant birthday tea. Ted Ensley Gardens The Ted Ensley Gardens are located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee, offering a great panoramic view. They provide a beautiful, 9.5-acre setting with a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings. The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 120 species of trees is just across the street. An adjoining natural area is under development.

Campground Policies • Laundry facilities are available at the shower building. • Ice and firewood are sold at the concession area from April 15 to Oct. 15. • Showers and restroom facilities are located at the entrance area and north end of the campground. Please keep these areas clean. • Please have your children watch carefully for cars around the area. YOU are responsible for the conduct and whereabouts of your children at all times. Courteous behavior is encouraged. • Animals must be under control of the owner and on a leash 10-feet or less. • A dump station is available for use. Fee is $8 for noncampers.
