ACTIVITIES

This year there will also be a contest for best wagon, stroller or bike floats dedicated to Day of the Dead . There will also be a "Calavera Contest" to award the best dressed Catrina or Catrin.

Activity stations for both kids and adults will feature Papel Picado making, sugar skull mask making, and a coloring station. There is a free photo booth brought to you by Memory Creations. There will also be a Day of the Dead themed youth art show featuring creations from several OKCPS schools.

ENTERTAINMENT

Professional face painting services will be available for Day of the Dead Festival attendees.

Entertainment this year includes dance performances from Everything Goes Dance Studio’s “Spirit of Mexico” Folkloric Dance Company and Yúmare Mexican Folkloric Dancers, musical performances from Oklahoma City’s own Mariachi Orgullo de América Featuring Theresa Beck, and the all skeleton band Los Eskeletos.

FOOD

The food selection for this year's festival will include food trucks such as Big Truck Taco, El Taco Box, and Churros Meoqui in addition to the exceptional restaurants in the Plaza District.

ABOUT THE DAY OF THE DEAD FESTIVAL IN THE PLAZA

The Day of the Dead Festival in the Plaza District is a celebration to educate and honor the traditional and beautiful Hispanic holiday of Dia de los Muertos. All are welcomed and encouraged to come out and participate in the festivities with an open mind and respectful heart. Five ways

to have fun this weekend

There’s really only one major film in theaters this weekend, the R-rated sequel “Halloween” in the popular Michael Myers franchise wherein Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode who has comes to her final confrontation with the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

2. October is National Pasta Month and you can celebrate by mak-

ing a delicious pasta dinner at home. Don’t feel like cooking? You’re in luck as many national Italian restaurant chains — like Buca di Beppo and Olive Garden— are offering deals for patrons.

3. Sweetest Day is Saturday, Oct. 20. Whether you celebrate the day or not (it’s a pseudo Valentine’s Day), it’s a good excuse to indulge in some sweets and ask for some from your significant other — as if you needed another reason to indulge.

4. Halloween season is in full swing, which means there are plenty

of ways to celebrate: haunted houses, corn mazes, special events and more. Check your local newspaper’s website for event listings.

5. And again we have lots of

good sports on tap: the MLB playoffs, NASCAR’s Chase, NFL and college football, MLS soccer and more. Check your TV guide for more information. — More Content Now

Scout Cawvey (2)

Shawnee vs. Sapulpa By Adam Ewing

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

Last week the Wolves came up short against Muskogee, losing 35-26. This week they look to rebound against another tough opponent as they host Sapulpa (5-2, 2-2). If last week taught the Wolves (25, 2-2) anything, it is the fact they can rally back from a double digit deficit and make the games interesting. For the first time all season, quarterback Heath Hunter threw for more than 300 yards. He finished the game with 352 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first time since week zero, against Choctaw, that Hunter had at least 200 yards passing. Hunter's 352 yards last week was the most any quarterback has thrown for in the area this season. Through seven games the senior signal caller has thrown for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns. He is currently the area's second leading passer.

Heath Hunter (3)

news-star.com

Sapulpa's Eli Williams has thrown for 894 yards and five touchdowns. The junior is completing 58 percent of his passes and has rushed for 583 yards and 11 touchdowns. Against similar competition, the 6'5” junior, threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns against Muskogee. Shawnee seems to live and die with how well Tre'Juan Shaw runs the ball. In both games he's run for more than 100 yards, the team is 2-0. On a positive note, Shaw found the end zone twice last week. He was held to 59 yards rushing. Williams leads Sapulpa with 583 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Te'zohn Taft, only a sophomore is second on the team with 422 yards rushing (11.1 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. Marcus Esparza has 383 yards and four scores while A.J. Checotah adds 228 yards and four touchdowns to an impressive backfield. As a team, Sapulpa has rushed for 1,621 yards and 23 touchdowns. After a breakout performance last week, Scout Cawvey ranks third in the area with 453 yards and three scores. Teammate Trenton Skinner ranks fourth in the area with 440 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Jaylon Orange ranks third on the team with 146 yards and two touchdown receptions.

Taft leads Sapulpa with 455 yards (28.4 yard per catch) and five touchdowns on 16 receptions. The second leading receiver for Sapulpa Kenyon Kahmeyer with eight receptions for 197 yards (24.6 YPC) and two touchdowns. The Chieftains have five receivers who average more than 10 yards per reception. The Shawnee offensive line will have their hands full with a Sapulpa defense and an above average pass rush. As a team, the Chieftains have 10 sacks. Esparza leads the defense with 82 tackles. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

#NSPreps Area Game of the Week:

Kellyville vs. Prague By Adam Ewing

McGinnis was held to under 100 yards rushing over the last two weeks combined. Expect him to return to form and give the Red Devils the boost they need.

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

The Red Devils will host district foe Kellyville Thursday evening. Prague comes in with a record of 5-2 overall and 3-1 in district. Last week, the Red Devils suffered their first loss since week one at the hands of Chandler. The Prague offense lives and dies with Brayden McGinnis. His 927 yards rushing and nine touchdowns are good enough for third in the area.

If Prague can find other ways to score they are tough to beat. Two weeks ago they beat Okemah by scoring a rare passing touchdown, along with a kickoff return and defensive touchdowns. So far this season, Prague has outscored their opposition 176-117, while Kellyville is beating their opponents at a rate of 211-133. Against common opponents Prague is 1-1 with a 16-6 loss to Chandler and a 61-6 win over Henryetta. Kellyville is 2-0 with a 41-7 win over Henryetta and a 35-12 win over Chandler. Kickoff is set for a 7 p.m. start Thursday.

Area games scheduled for Oct. 18 Bethel (1-6, 0-4) at Douglass (1-6, 0-4) – 7 p.m.

Gunner Smith (6) - Bethel

The good news here is one team is coming out with their first district win. Looking at this one on paper, Bethel should be the favorite in this Thursday night matchup. In three of Bethel's losses, they've scored at least 30 points. Compare that to Douglass who has yet to score 30 in a game. Offensively Bethel has the advantage. Gunner Smith's 1,664 yards and 16 touchdowns lead the area. Smith's receivers, Devin Acklin and Drae Wood continue to rank first and second in receiving yards respectively. If the defense, led by Matthew Melter's 106 tackles can get a few stops, Bethel should pick up that elusive district win. Freshman Corey Metscher has 95 tackles and an interception as a freshman. Other defensive notables are Jesse Tucker with two interceptions and Terrell Dodson with two sacks. Against common opponents both teams are 0-2. Bethel lost to Pauls Valley 58-33 and Purcell by a score of 34-7. Douglass fell to Pauls Valley 49-27 and Purcell, 44-20.

McLoud (2-5, 1-3) at Madill (3-4, 1-3) – 7:30 p.m.

McLoud has yet to pick up a win on the road this season, but their matchup with Madill at least gives them hope. Madill's offense has scored less than 10 points in four games this season. The Redskins hold wins over Bethel (28-26) and Harrah (30-20) this season. If Damien Dye can get going in the running game, the Redskins are tough to beat. Dye ranks fourth in the area with 638 yards rushing. Koalton Keller is tied for third in the area with 10 touchdown passes. If Keller can connect with Tyler Jones (275 yards, three touchdowns), that should free up Dye to churn out the yardage needed to give McLoud the win. Defensively, Brandon Hadl leads the Redskins with nine sacks. Against common opponents, both teams are 1-3, with both teams picking up wins over Harrah and losses to Tuttle, Cushing and Blanchard.

Seminole (5-2, 2-2) at Checotah (5-2, 3-1) – 7 p.m.

The Chieftains will look to rebound after a tough loss last week with a road win over district opponent Checotah Thursday. Seminole lost 22-21 to Stigler and coach Mike Snyder will have his team ready for a must-win game Thursday. Seminole has the area's leading rusher in Cameron Gunville (1,433 yards, 19 touchdowns) at their disposal. Quarterback Cade Hammond ranks second in the area with 11 touchdown passes. So far this season, Seminole has outscored their opponents 253-110. Against common opponents, Idabel and Stigler, Seminole is 0-2 and Checotah is 1-1.

news-star.com

Chandler (3-4, 1-3) at Okemah (4-3, 2-2) – 7 p.m.

The Lions pulled off a win against Prague last week and look to carry that momentum with them as they hit the road to face Okemah Thursday. Chandler will rely on their running game to win ball games. Dylan McKinney sits fifth in the area in rushing with 610 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Chabon Anderson adds 309 yards rushing and a score to a grind it out style. Taylor Clagg leads the Lions defense with 87 tackles and has 13 tackles for loss. Darian Mahan leads the secondary with three interceptions and eight passes defensed. Against common opponents (Meeker, Prague), Chandler is 1-1, while Okemah is 0-2.

Weleetka (5-2, 2-0) at Maud (3-4, 1-1) – 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 38-20 win over Caddo last week. Lane Brooks leads Maud with 802 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. Brooks currently ranks fourth in the area in passing yards and is tied for third in touchdowns. Brady Arms is a load to bring down, as he's rushed for 541 yards and six scores. Roman Cox is playmaker on both sides of the football. So far this season, Cox ranks ninth in receiving with 252 yards and four touchdowns. Weleetka is a powerhouse running the football. On the season, they've totaled 2,085 yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground. Weleetka has 16 sacks so they can really put pressure on opposing offenses.

Meeker (6-1, 3-1) at Holdenville (3-4, 1-3) – 7 p.m.

Meeker looks like a team ready for postseason play. Caden Wolford went over 1,000 yards rushing last week and has 10 touchdowns on the season. Whoever plays the Bulldogs should expect a heavy dose of the sophomore star. Wolford has four sacks and three fumble recoveries on the other side of the ball. Defensively, Dakota Gabbert leads the team with five interceptions. Gabbert returned one of those interceptions for a touchdown and has a punt return and receiving touchdown on his resume as well. Dawson Stanberry has big play ability at the receiver position. So far this season, Stanberry has 401 yards receiving and four touchdowns, while averaging 16.7 yards per catch. Quarterback Jacob Martin is finding his rhythm in the passing game. He's completed over 50 percent of his passes the last two weeks and has 15 total touchdowns (10 rushing, five Caden Wolford (28) - Meeker passing).

Micah Boyce adds 400 yards and two touchdowns on 6.3 yards per carry and Raymond Thomas has four touchdowns and averages 8.2 yards per touch. Defensively, Tyler Bingham is in on just about every play. He's recorded 102 tackles, 9.5 sacks and blocked two punts. As a team, Tecumseh has nine interceptions. Caleb Caleb Kelsey (3) - Tecumseh Kelsey leads the team with three and one pick six. Bethany has a quarterback that lights up the scoreboard. Bethany's Sam Brandt has 1,347 yards passing with 12 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He also completes over 60 percent of his passes and has 11 rushing touchdowns. Jacob Kyle runs the ball well, with over 700 yards rushing and eight scores. The Bronchos have five receivers with over 10 catches.
