Red Earth Treefest celebrates the holidays with a Native twist OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Red Earth Art Center celebrates the Christmas season with a Native flair when Treefest opens for a seven-week run November 19 through January 2019 in downtown Oklahoma City. Red Earth Treefest features 18 Native Tribes from throughout Oklahoma invited to participate in the annual holiday event by creating handmade ornaments and art objects made to highlight their distinctive tribal culture. The exhibition highlights the diverse cultures that make Oklahoma Unique. “Treefest is our family-friendly Christmas gift to the state. Last year we welcomed over 2,000 guests during our annual event - and the public loved it,” said Lona Barrick, president of the Red Earth board of directors. “Red Earth Treefest appeals to not only little children, but the child in all of us, and we’re happy to offer our event as a gift to the people of Oklahoma.” Handcrafted ornaments on the Christmas trees are as diverse as the tribes of Oklahoma. Birch bark canoes adorn the Citizen Potawatomi purple clad tree synonymous with their Great Lakes culture; while intricately painted ponies are featured on the Comanche tree to celebrate their legacy as the “Lords of the Plains.” Oklahoma Native Tribes participating in the 2018 Treefest include the Absentee Shawnee, Caddo, Cherokee, Cheyenne & Arapaho, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Citizen Potawatomi, Comanche, Delaware, Kaw, Osage, Sac & Fox, Seminole, Kiowa, Otoe Missouria, Ponca and Pawnee. Each tribal organization has been hard at work for several months creating their handmade ornaments with exhibit copy explaining how select ornaments tell their cultural story. Thirty-nine Native tribes are headquartered in Oklahoma, giving the state more tribal headquarters than any other. Nearly every tribe Oklahoma tribe has homelands in other parts of the country – from the Pacific Northwest to

the Florida Everglades – creating a diverse tribal palette unique to Oklahoma. Additional trees include the Red Earth docent tree with hundreds of handmade ornaments including beaded corn, dreamcatchers, mini tipis, drums and parfleche bags; and a tree featuring ornaments created by Oklahoma Native artists available for sale. “We are thrilled to carry on this Christmas tradition for the people of Oklahoma,” said Barrick. “I know our guests will thoroughly enjoy our beautiful display of Christmas trees adorned with ornaments that represent our tribal cultures so well.” Red Earth Treefest is presented 10-5 pm Monday through Friday Nov. 13 through Jan.5, 2018. Admission is a $1 donation with special rates for groups. The public invited to an Open House on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10-3 pm with hot wassail, holiday treats and Christmas shopping. Red Earth Art Center is located at 6 Santa Fe Plaza next to the historic Skirvin Hilton Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. Visit www.RedEarth.org or call (405) 427-5228 for additional information. Red Earth, Inc. is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote the rich traditions of American Indian arts and cultures through education, a premier festival, a museum and fine art markets. Southern Plains Indian Museum featuring art exhibition by local artist Amber DuBoise-Shepherd ANADARKO, OKLAHOMA: The Southern Plains Indian Museum, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board, will feature an exhibit of paintings by Amber DuBoise-Shepherd. The exhibition will run from October 26 to December 31, 2018. A reception and gallery talk will be held November 9, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Amber DuBoise-Shepherd, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation of Arizona, is a talented painter. Born and raised in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Amber and her husband, Joshuah Shepherd, currently reside in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Amber attended South Rock Creek school, and finished her high school years at Earlsboro High School. She holds an Associate’s Degree from Seminole State College, Seminole, Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma. Amber currently works fulltime as an artist in her home art studio, and helps the local artists of Shawnee in events and to help spread her knowledge of art to the community. Through her art, Amber depicts contemporary narratives of modern Native Americans interacting with spiritual beings in their daily lives. She works in both oil paints and mixed media, consisting of watercolors and re-

fillable Copic markers. The decision on whether to use oil or mixed media for a piece depends on the narrative Amber hopes to tell with her artwork. In her oil paintings, she prefers to use Arches oil paper in order to create a smooth surface. Oil paints impart a quality of softness to the piece that harmonizes with the smoothness of the paper substrate. For her mixed media pieces, she experiments with different types of paper in order to create greater levels of depth and texture. Both tools help in telling a different version of a narrative piece. Regardless of the medium, Amber employs a consistent style in her two-dimensional work. As the descendant of a long line of artisans, Amber gives credit to her family for her creativity. Her mother’s family is Navajo and she grew up seeing her maternal great-grandmother, Louise Begay, weave Navajo rugs on a large metal loom when she visited the Navajo Reservation. Amber recalls her great-grandmother shearing sheep by hand, spinning the wool into yarn, and using large pots to dye her own yarn. Many talented silversmiths are also part of Amber’s maternal family, and they pride themselves in creating handmade Navajo jewelry. Amber’s paternal family is Sac and Fox and Potawatomi. Her paternal grandmother, Adeline DuBoise, cre-

ates handmade Sac and Fox, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Seminole, and Shawnee clothing that Amber proudly wears. Amber and her family would go to events, where Adeline would participate in Native American fashion shows. Amber has received numerous awards for her artwork including: First Place, Second Place, and Judges Choice Award from renowned Native American artist Dana Tiger at the 2018 Native Fest, Cushing, Oklahoma; the 2018 Red Earth Emerging Artist Award, Red Earth Festival, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Third Place at the 2018 Stillwater Arts Festival, Stillwater, Oklahoma; First Place at the 2017 Native American Heritage Festival, Cushing, Oklahoma; Best of Show at the 2016 Native American Heritage Festival in Cushing, Oklahoma; and Third Place at the 2016 Annual Juried Student Exhibition in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Amber was previously selected as one of the artists to participate in one of the worlds most renowned Native American Art Markets, the 97th Santa Fe Indian Market back in August of this year. You can see, follow, and share Amber L. DuBoise-Shepherds work on Facebook and Instagram. Amber is working on a getting her work up and around her hometown of Shawnee, Oklahoma, so be on the look out for her original artwork.

Shawnee vs. Bartlesville By Adam Ewing

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

Even though Shawnee (2-7, 2-4) is eliminated from playoff contention, the Wolves still have a lot to play for. When some players ran from the challenge of 6A, this group of seniors stuck it out and gave it their all. With their final home game in the 2018 campaign against Bartlesville (3-6, 2-4) tonight, the team can set the tone for the off-season and years to come. Last week, Shawnee ran up against district powerhouse Bixby, losing 41-7 to the Spartans. After one quarter of play, Shawnee was able to hang with the Spartans only trailing 14-7. Then the wheels fell off and Shawnee was outscored 27-0 over the next three quarters. Con'Cere Spencer scored the only Wolves touchdown on an 80yard kick return. Both teams are known to give up plenty of points, so this one has the opportunity to be a high scoring affair. In his final game as the Wolves' signal caller, Heath Hunter looks to add to his 1,650 passing yards and 10 touch-

Tre'Juan Shaw (21)

downs. After consecutive weeks of gaudy numbers, Hunter returned to earth last week, passing for 120 yards and no touchdowns. Tre'Juan Shaw has the opportunity to the area's third most touchdowns if he can find the end zone this week. With 621 yards on the season, Shaw should go over 700 for the season if he plays up to his potential.

Zane Christopher (14) & Jaylon Orange (13)

With another big game, Cawvey has a legitimate chance at the area lead in receiving yards. A 200-yard game is not out of the question. If he plays like he did against Sapulpa and Muskogee, Cawvey very well could end the season as the top receiver in the area. Even though Trenton Skinner was held to 10 or fewer yards on three occasions this season, he's still put up impressive numbers overall. The senior receiver, currently sits fourth in the area with 512 yards. Touchdowns have been scarce at times, but Skinner has three receiving and one passing score this year. Shawnee's leading tackler is Hudson Davis with 70. His 3.5 sacks currently lead the team. Elijah Powis ranks second on the team with 64 tackles and 2.5 sacks. One of the bright spots throughout the season is freshman defensive back Jaylon Orange.

Orange has impressed night in and night out, leading the team with four interceptions. He had one of those called back against Carl Albert or he would have another on his resume. No other Wolves player has an interception this season. Also, he is the third option at receiver for the Wolves, registering 276 yards and two scores in his first season at the varsity level. Last week, Austin Gonzales recorded his first sack of the season. Kickoff for Senior Night is set for 7:30 p.m.

#NSPreps Area Game of the Week:

Lone Grove vs. Bethel By Adam Ewing

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

There should be a heavy dose of Smith to Acklin early, allowing another record to fall this week. Expect both receivers to hit the 10 touchdown mark this week.

The Bethel Wildcats (2-7, 1-5) will host Lone Grove this week (1-8, 1-5) in the Bragging Rights Bowl. Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs a few weeks ago, but there are several interesting storylines remaining for the Wildcats.

Matthew Melter is a tackling machine. According to all available stats, Melter is tied for the area lead with 138 tackles. Add in his 559 yards rushing (six touchdowns) and 316 receiving yards (two touchdowns), he's an all-around game changer.

Last week, Gunner Smith broke two more single-season passing records, further cementing his legacy as the best quarterback in Bethel history. This season, Smith broke the yards, touchdowns, attempts and completions records, most of which he set last year as a sophomore. With one game remaining, Smith holds the area lead in passing yards and touchdowns as he's thrown for 2,241 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Freshman linebacker, Corey Metscher is right on Melter's tail with 119 tackles. Coach Joey Ginn has to like that Metscher is around for three more seasons and has a nose for the football.

Devin Acklin is another record breaker. Last week he tied the single-season record for receptions with 72. If the trend continues, Acklin will break the record as he's caught at least four passes in each game this season, with a season high of 12 in week two against McLoud. Acklin has totaled 812 yards and nine touchdowns. Bethel's sophomore receiver, Drae Wood is having a great season as well. He's hauled in 55 passes for 711 yards and nine touchdowns.

As a team, the Wildcats have six interceptions, six sacks and 12 fumble recoveries. Looking at the stats, this team is much better than their record indicates. With so many players returning next year, the final game of the 2018 season should be used as a stepping stone for the years to come. No stats were available for Lone Grove other than they've given up 305 points compared to 136 scored. Bethel scored 276 points through nine games while giving up 351. Senior Night is set for a 7 p.m. start.

Oklahoma Baptist (3-6, 3-6 GAC) set a new Division II high-water mark for wins in a season after knocking off Southwestern Oklahoma State, 47-39, on the road in Weatherford last week. Currently perfect against Great American Conference teams from the Sooner State, OBU will look to move to 4-0 against Oklahoma-based schools in 2018 when they square off against Northwestern (3-6, 3-6 GAC).

The Bison are third in the GAC with 405.4 yards of total offense per game. Preston Haire accounts for 326.3 yards of offense to lead the GAC, including a conference-best 297.2 passing yards/game to go along with 21 touchdowns against 21 interceptions. Cagney Roberson is Haire's go-to receiver,

Area games scheduled for Nov. 2

Bethany (8-1, 5-1) at McLoud (2-7, 1-5) – 7:30 p.m.

McLoud (2-7, 1-5) will end their season season with a tough matchup against district 4A-2 powerhouse Bethany (8-1, 5-1) Friday evening. McLoud, who's currently on a five-game losing streak, has struggled to score at times, getting beat by a total score of 332-178. Bethany is on the opposite end of the spectrum, currently riding a three-game winning streak and outscoring their opposition 354-181. Both teams lost to district leader Tuttle. McLoud lost 40-3 and Bethany fell 30-7. Damien Dye has a chance to go over 1,000 yards on the season. He needs 59 yards for the season mark. Those numbers all but guarantee him the fourth best season by an area running back. With a big game he can jump into third place. Look for the scrappy back to end his high school career on a high note. Despite a tough senior campaign, Kolaton Keller has put up respectable numbers, scoring most of the team's touchdowns. On the season, Keller has 1,163 yards and 15 scores. Those numbers rank him fourth in the area in passing yards and third in touchdown passes. Last week, Tyler Jones did it all. He caught passes, ran the ball and filled in for Keller at quarterback. Jones even caught a touchdown from Dye and had a sweet one-handed interception that prevented a touchdown. Jones ranks seventh in the area with 419 yards and is tied for second in the area with five receiving scores. Bethany relies heavily on quarterback Sam Brandt, who accounts for 31 total scores (16 passing, 15 rushing). The signal caller has thrown for 1,717 yards and completes 64 percent of his throws. Bethany can run the ball better than most. Jacob Kyle has 950 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns. As a team, Bethany has 15 sacks and nine interceptions along with one special teams touchdown.

Meeker (8-1, 5-1) at Henryetta (1-8, 0-6) – 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs have an easy matchup the last week of the season. Meeker is riding a seven-game win streak while Henryetta has dropped seven in a row. Wolford should go over the 1,200 yard mark on his first carry and shouldn't play more than a quarter, if at all. As a team, Meeker has 10 sacks, 11 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries along with two defensive touchdowns. This is another game that should be wrapped up early.

Area games scheduled for Nov. 2 Maud (3-5, 1-3) at Canadian (5-4, 1-3) – 7 p.m.

The Tigers have a chance at a playoff spot if they can sneak out a road win this week. The problem is Canadian can score a ton of points (326) while Maud gives up points at an alarming rate (325).

Jones (8-1, 6-0) at Prague (5-4, 3-3) – 7 p.m.

Tecumseh (4-5, 2-4) at Madill (4-5, 2-4) – 7:30 p.m.

On paper, Tecumseh is the favorite in this road game. They are riding the wave of momentum from beating McLoud on the road last week. Both teams are not in the playoff hunt and is another game of bragging rights. The Savages outscore their opponents 224-237 compared to 153-348 for Madill. Tecumseh has scored 40 points on four occasions, while Madill gave up 40 points four times. The Savages run the ball and run it often to the tune of 2,000 yards as a team. Jaylen Walker leads the way with 608 yards and 10 touchdowns. Micah Boyce is second on the team with 425 yards and one score. Raymond Thomas and Hunter Boyd round out the backfield with 418 and 256 yards respectively. Will Hilton hasn't thrown for a ton of yards but he completes 53 percent of his passes. Dylan Morris leads the team with 303 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Jake Trice leads the team with 19 receptions and averages 9.8 yards per reception. Defensively, Tyler Bingham is the MVP. His 138 tackles ties him for the area lead. His 12.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two blocked kicks make him a force to be reckoned with in all areas of the game.

You never know what Prague team will show up. At times they look like world beaters and other times they fail to score. Brayden McGinnis was held to under 100 yards rushing four weeks in a row. If he can get rolling, maybe Prague can keep Jones' offense off the field and make things interesting.

Chandler (4-5, 2-4) at Holdenville (3-6, 1-5) – 7 p.m.

The Lions have been inconsistent this year. This week's matchup is about as even as possible. Chandler has 223 points on the season, while Holdenville has 234. If there is a 50-50 game this week, Chandler and Holdenville is it.

Seminole (7-2, 4-2) at Okmulgee (1-8, 0-6) – 7 p.m.

Seminole should have this game locked up by halftime. The Chieftains outscored their opponents 356-144, while Okmulgee gives up points at a 146-411 clip. The good news for Seminole is last week running back Jamon Dennis returned to the field after suffering a sprained MCL early in the season. He picked up 79 yards and scored a touchdown last week. Dennis makes an already scary backfield that much better. Expect a heavy dose of the senior ball carrier this week.
