Alli Masters, Breakaway Roping Champion Alli Masters, from Leon, Iowa, took the breakaway roping win at the IFYR with a 2.0. “It’s pretty exciting,” she said of her win in Shawnee. “I knew I’d be fast with the girl behind me and it all worked out.” She came in splitting third and fourth. “It was tight, but I figured the girls ahead of me would take it, that’s why I went after it. I threw the first shot I had, laid the barrier back as well as I could.” This is her first year at the IFYR. “There’s a lot of money and competitors,” said the 17-year-old soon to be senior, who has been roping since she could ride. Her family has a ranch in Iowa and they rope every night. Her brother, Cauy, just won the National Junior High Finals in the tie-down roping. Alli came to Shawnee after winning the Iowa High School Rodeo Association in the breakaway roping and will head to the National High School Finals next. She also competes in goat tying and team roping, but prefers the breakaway roping. “Roping is all I want to do, being fast and the competiveness of it is what I like about it.” Her mom, Andi, helps her and she learned to rope from her dad, Travis, who rode broncs. She has another younger brother, Layni.

Leander Williams and Whit Kitchens, Team Roping Champions The team roping duo of and Lander Williams (header) and Whit Kitchens (heeler) won the team roping with a time of 5.4. The team came in the short go in third place. “Our plan was to put the pressure on them and jump out front,” said Lander, from Thorndale, Texas. Lander has been roping since he was 8. “I try not to ever second guess my shot, take the first presentable shot.” His dad, Anthony, pours concrete and runs some cows, his mom, Jennifer, is a stay at home mom who home schools Lander and his younger brother, Rankin. Lander and Whit have been roping together for two years, meeting through high school rodeos. “It’s clicked for us,” said Whit, who lives two hours from Lander in Mullin, Texas. He caught his first calf when he was 6-years-old and started team roping when he was 15, enjoying the challenge of it. “Practice with a purpose,” is what the only child of Amy and Terry says about his roping practice. “I love the competition here – it’s the toughest rodeo of the year,” said Whit. The boys won an additional $4,000 in the jackpots and will take the money they won in Shawnee to enter amateur rodeos and open rodeos, they didn’t make the National High School Finals.

2019 IFYR PREVIEW

Gabby Gunter, Pole Bending Champion Gabby Gunter won the pole bending at the IFYR with a 20.083. Her total time on three (59.06) beat her sister’s IFYR record of 59.100. “It was very exciting, but I was calm. When I was going through the run we didn’t make the best first pole. The second time through was better.” Her year hasn’t been the best as she had to find another horse, once she got into high school she could no longer use her sister’s famous sale barn horse, Blaze. “She was an awesome horse and now I’m riding another horse,” said the 15-year- old from Sulphur, Louisiana. “This was our first clean run.” She won both rounds at the IFYR on her new horse, Dinero. The third of seven siblings, Gabby had more problems this year than getting a new horse. An accident with a side by side in October sidelined her for eight weeks with a broken radius bone. When she was released to ride in December, she tried again to work with Dinero, but the pair continually hit poles. “It was mostly me, I was very pouty and mad that I couldn’t ride Blaze and never gave the horse a chance. I was not confident in myself or my horse.” That’s all changed now. “I wasn’t planning on making it (to the short go), I only packed two pairs of boots,” she concludes. “I think he’s only going to get better.” The benefits that Gabby got out of having to switch horses were huge. “I didn’t hate the horse; I hated the situation and what I learned is never give up – always have confidence.”

Gavin Soileau, Steer Wrestling Champion Gavin Soileau won the steer wrestling with a 4.1. The 18-year-old from Bunkie, Louisiana, came into the short go in the No. 1 position. “I knew I had to go make my run, but I knew I had a chance,” he said. His No. 1 steer wrestling coach is Tom Carney, who gave him this advice; ‘Don’t worry about what everybody else is doing, just go make you a run.” The second youngest of five Louisiana cowboys and one cowgirl, Gavin just won the Louisiana state title in the steer wrestling as well as the All Around, also competing in team roping. He has been competing since he was in 8th grade. “Nobody in our family started until that age and once my dad, Kent, could get away from the farm, he started helping us out.” The family farms 10,000 acres - corn, beans, wheat, rice, sugar cane and crawfish. “We stock ponds, flood them at a certain times of the year and catch them. We can catch up to three pounds in one pond trap – that happens in early February and we pull the traps in May.” Gabe has been coming to the IFYR for four years. “The competition is tough; in Texas there’s a lot of people that don’t make nationals and you have to compete against them here.” Gavin will college rodeo at McNeese, studying agricultural business and then go on the (PRCA rodeo) road for a while before setting in on the family farm.

Hunter Ramsey, Bareback Riding Champion Hunter Ramsey won second the last two years in the bareback riding at the IFYR. The 16-year-old from El Dorado, Arkansas, came in here determined to win it. “I had a lot of motivation from dad (Keith), who critiqued all his rides. Part of the Bloomer Team, Hunter is only the second one from Arkansas to win the bareback riding at the IFYR. There were 19 young men contending for the title. “I drew a horse that came out, swooped left and right and sucked back; I started throwing my feet.” He came back to the short go in third position and had to wait for the number two man, Payton Lackey, who got a re-ride, to see if he was going to win. Hunter had his own experience with re-rides at the IFYR. In the first round, the flank fell off and he got a 76.5 with the option of a re-ride. He took it even though he was winning the round. His re-ride gave him the exact same score. Hunter doesn’t high school rodeo, he competes in the amateur associations around his state and Louisiana. He has been the bareback champion in the Arkansas Rodeo Association for three years, winning his first championship when he was 13. He’s leading the UPRA standings now by $4,000. Hunter started his rodeo career riding bulls when he was 7. He added bareback riding in 2010, winning the All Around in the Louisiana Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2015. Hunter is planning to high school rodeo next year. He will be a senior, and is home schooled so he can rodeo. He plans to go to the University of Tennessee and into petroleum and gas. “It’s a one-of-a-kind experience,” he says of the IFYR. “It’s so competitive.”

Taylor Russell, Saddle Bronc Riding Taylor Russell from Lipscomb, Texas, came into the short go in the third position. “I was the only one to ride in the short go,” said the 19-year-old. “I was 68 and the horse went out there and circled to the left, she got really long and I was struggling to keep up with her. She was fast and I couldn’t pick up time with her.” Taylor has been riding for three years, and started because all his friends were doing it. His dad (Justin) team ropes, but Taylor is the only one in the family that’s going down rodeo road. Mom, Jessica, is the videographer. “I’m just starting to get to where I can hang on the ranker horses,” he said. “I’m starting to enter a few more.” This is his second year at the IFYR. “It’s fun – you get to be at a rodeo where all kinds of new people are getting together and rodeoing. The horses were good here, a good honest pen that you could get on that bucked pretty even.” When Taylor wasn’t competing, he got on his spur board to practice. He will start at Clarendon this fall and study Ag Business and Economics. “It lets me do something I like – rodeo.”

Kaylee Cormier, Goat Tying Champion Kaylee Cormier from Lake Charles, Louisiana, took the goat tying championship with a 7.1. She won this once before in 2016. “I knew going in I had to be fast, so I had the mentality of all or nothing, but I knew I couldn’t just throw it all to the wind. I actually stumbled and twisted my ankle, when I got the goat I was smooth,” said the 18-year-old who is heading to McNeese this fall to become a veterinarian. “I’ve always loved large animals,” she said. Kaylee started with ribbon pull when she was 4 and got her own goat herd when she was 6. “I was blessed enough to win it for the third year in a row,” she said of her Louisiana High School goat tying championship. This is her fourth year at the IFYR. She took home more than $4,000 in 2016 and is looking forward to taking the money and putting it towards her rodeo career. She and her family are heading to the National High School Finals and she will pass the time reading. “Charles Dickens is a favorite.”

John Michael Elliott, Tie Down Roping Champion John Michael Elliott from Alvin, Texas, made his second trip to the IFYR. “I came in 13th in 2016 and my calf ran through the rope in the short go,” said the 18-year-old cowboy that will go to Sam Houston State in the fall and rope calves. “I’ve been roping for eight years and this is my first time winning at such a big rodeo.” He started his rodeo career barrel racing –which he claims helped his riding. “I knew I had a good calf; I knew I had to make the best run and I knew I had two guys behind me so I had to be fast.” The second high call missed his calf and first high call missed it by half a second. “I can’t describe it,” he said of his feeling on winning. “It’s amazing, a breath taker – I never thought I’d be at this level this fast.” He attributes his success in roping to hours and hours in the practice pen and hard work. “I never gave up – there were some points that I felt I was roping good and I’d go and choke and that made me doubt how good I was. With this win, I took another step closer to getting to my best. It’s been so great for me – this year I’ve done so many things – I made the National High School Finals. I hadn’t made short round in the high school finals ever.” There were 130 calf ropers in Texas trying for the top four spots going to nationals. He is riding a back-up horse, his good horse is sore. “He lets me rope and gives me just enough pull to do my job.” John Michael is the youngest son of Michele and Doug. He has two older sisters who rodeoed up until they were in college, and John Michael is only one that wanted to keep going.

Caroline Kelly, Barrel Racing Champion Caroline Kelly, from Waverly, Alabama, won the barrel racing, one of the tightest races in the IFYR; one tenth separated her fifth place from the first place. “The number 15 in the short go ran a wicked 15.9. All the girls are amazing. I did my best, and set my horse up to do the best and let God decide where it fell.” Caroline embraces pressure and loves the nervous adrenaline. She is riding a horse that was dreamed up by her dad and mom (Tom and Becca), the first complete embryo transfer from Auburn University. “My dad, Tom, studied genetics and my mom had a great barrel horse. Hesa Dashin Dreamer was planned so he could be ready to compete when I was 18. We raised him; after my mom futuritied on him, we turned him out and let him be a horse and then I used him in pole bending. He’s 9 now and running great.” She doesn’t high school rodeo, but has qualified on Junior three times in the AMERICAN.

Saturday, June 29, 2019 • 13

Mason Taylor, Bull Riding Champion Mason Taylor came to the short round in the third position to win the bull riding. “We had a bull riding,” he said of the short go. “We rode six out of the 15; the last two fell off. Behind the bucking chutes, I was so nervous I couldn’t hardly spit; my heart was pumping. When the gate opened, my nerves went away and I did my business like I was supposed to. My bull bucked; his first jump he jerked me to my fingertips. I was riding with my tail pulled through my handle. I get my rope really scary sticky for instances like that.” His week here was all about business; he won the first round, bucked off the second round. He learned how to ride from his dad, Chris, who put him on a sheep when he was 2. “I’ve been riding ever since.” He’s been riding in the PBR since he was 18, and is 26th in the Velocity standings. Since he was 4, he dreamed about winning the world title. “I’m going to go and take advantage of it. When I’m finished with PBR, I will disappear. I don’t want to look at another bull – I want to be done by the time I’m 27 and be a cowboy.” Derek Rogers is my ranch idol, and my dad, who rode bulls for 20 years, got me to where I’m at.” His mom, Angela, never rodeoed and neither did his sisters, one is a photographer and the other is a boxer.

Quade Hiatt, All Around Cowboy Quade Hiatt gets to use a Twister trailer for the next year. “I’ll haul stuff around the house,” said the 18-year-old from Canyon, Texas, who competed in three events at the IFYR. This is his third year competing at the IFYR and his first year to win anything. “I had the same game plan, I just executed it a little better,” he said. Quade ended up winning the second round in the tie-down roping; setting the arena record with a 7.4. He won second in the steer wrestling, and didn’t place at all in the team roping. He made it back to the short go in one event and had no clue he was in contention for the All Around. After the steer wrestling, he walked in the stands and his mom, Tygh, told him. “I got happy.” Quade has been competing since he can remember, competing in Texas High School, and will head to the Finals in Rock Springs in one event. He’s going to be a senior and is undecided about his college plans. “I want to be a rodeo cowboy,” he said. It is not surprising – his dad, Chad, sister, Cross, 15, and mom both rodeoed. He is sponsored by Rattler Ropes and Resistol. He is on the Curicyn Team.

Cashen Turner, All Around Cowgirl Cashen Turner made it back to the short go in three events, barrel racing, breakaway roping and pole bending and is the 2018 IFYR All Around Champion. She started competing when she was 5, added pole bending and picked up roping and it all fell into place. She took reserve All Around for Kansas High School this year, reserve champion in barrel racing and pole bending. When she’s not rodeoing or practicing, Cashen is busy working on her clothing line, CT Designs. “For my 5th birthday, I wanted a sewing machine; in 6th grade I wanted a mannequin. I put the clothes I’m going to wear on my mannequin every day to see how they look,” said the 16-year-old home schooler. “After I started sewing, then came the colored jeans and the blinged-out shirts – all through junior high. Every time I walked out of the trailer, dad just shook his head.” Her family recently moved to Edmond, Oklahoma. “I love Edmond – there’s a Starbucks two miles away and in Plains, Kansas, it was an hour away.” She admits having a tough fall. “I came back in the spring; I got a new barrel horse, that’s changed my confidence. I wasn’t clicking with my horse, so we decided I only have so many more years left. Found him through Oxygen, Shot of Fire Water, he’s ran everywhere. Four years ago today he was in Calgary running at the short go. He’s 15, but he doesn’t act like it. He has the heart and the grit.” She’s hoping to go to Oklahoma State University and study graphic and fashion design. She didn’t get her fashion drive from anyone in her family. “My mom is so tomboy, and certainly not from dad, who focuses on his trailer business, RangeMaster Trailers. My brother plays golf and just went to college to study sports management.”
