A Hometown Wedding Tecumseh couple gives tips on planning local weddings By Elisabeth Slay (405) 214-3926 | eslay@news-star.com | Twitter: @ElisabethSlay

he sun was shining and the weather was perfect July 27, 2019 as Franki (Hull) Brown walked down the aisle to her husband Zac. The couple was surrounded by family, friends and a community who had helped in more ways than one to make their wedding day truly special. According to Franki, after meeting as freshmen and dating throughout high school and part of college, Zac proposed to her over a year ago and the two started the process of planning their hometown wedding. “At first it was incredibly stressful. We got engaged in December...and I was a full time student at Oklahoma Baptist University and Zac was working,” Franki said. The 21-year-old said she was in the nursing program at OBU, she was playing college softball, she was working at her job at SSM Health St.Anthony Hospital and Zac was working full time at his welding job at Tinker Air Force Base. Zac said in the beginning stages of the planning process he felt like the couple had to really look for wedding vendors and other such businesses in the area.

2020 BRIDE

“I feel like we had to do a lot more research and really digging and planning with less resources than a bigger city. Oklahoma City would have tons of vendors and everything else like that,” Zac said. However, while Oklahoma City or large cites have more options, both Zac and Franki wanted to stay in their community for convenience, availability and to be closer to friends and family. “It just seemed so much simpler to try and keep it close. If we forgot something or needed something everything was right at our finger tips,” Franki said. Franki explained over time the couple started to realize how important their connections to the community were as they began to receive offers and help from people they’ve known their whole lives. The nursing student said other than the photographer, every aspect of the Brown wedding was taken care of by local vendors or friends. Their food was catered by several of their favorite restaurants including Abuelita Rosa’s Mexican Restaurant, Franki’s family business Hardesty Grocery & Market and Cope’s Country Cafe. “Where it maybe was not as many vendors, we already knew so many people that it was just more comfortable,” Franki said.

“I can’t tell you how many deals we got just because we stayed local and we knew so many people.” Franki also said many families who have lived in Tecumseh all their lives pitched in to help for her wedding including the owners of their venue which was Crossing Hearts Ranch and their security detail which was overseen by Tecumseh Police Chief J.R. Kidney. “It was really great and they did so much to help us out with time and helping us set up,” Franki said. “That was another thing, so many people came to help us set up because it was so local.” According to Zac, once they began planning with friends, neighbors and others, he and Franki found the process to be less stressful and more enjoyable as it brought people closer together. “It was a lot easier that way because you could just pick up the phone and call somebody if there was something that came up and you needed something else,” Zac said. “You didn’t have hurdles to jump through.” Franki said the stress was especially more manageable once their wedding planner Lecretia Franetovich offered to help them. “She reached out to us and she was a blessing and I am so glad we had a wedding planner,” Franki said. “She would make all the calls to all the vendors and got everything lined out. We didn’t have to worry about anything the day of.” Franki said their floral arrangements were done by the Rustic Rose in Tecumseh which was owned by yet another person who had a connection to her and Zac’s families and wanted to offer their services. Zac explained because of their relationship with the community, he and Franki were not only able to have their dream wedding, but contribute back to their hometown. “Instead of giving our money to somebody we had know idea who they were we were putting it right back into the community,” Zac said. The couple also said by utilizing their connections and doing things themselves they were able to save money and go on their ideal honey moon to Colorado. Zac and Franki explained their planning process ended up being easier than they originally thought, but one of the biggest challenges was choosing which vendors to

use. “It was hard to pick because there were all these places that we’ve gone our whole lives and...everybody wanted to help...the hardest part for me was deciding which one to go with,” Zac said. In the end however, both Zac and Franki explained by using local vendors, friends and others, the community was also able to be apart of their wedding. “Overall I think it was the best day of my life, seeing everybody enjoying something that we put together and a whole bunch of other people helped put together. It was pretty great,” Franki said. The newlyweds advise future couples to think about their connection to their community and not sweat the small details. “I would say a lot of people get really worked up about their wedding, but just relax it will be ok. It will all work out,” Zac said. In addition, Franki encourages people to seek all of their options even ones they may not be certain of because everyone knows almost everyone in a small town. “I would say that you don’t want to underestimate the power of relationships (that) are local, with friends or distant friends. Don’t underestimate them because they’ll come through,” Franki said.

Wedding

budget hacks

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

A

wedding is usually the biggest and costliest party of a couple’s life. Plan accordingly and set a solid budget. “Setting a wedding budget is quite a challenge. While there are a lot of costs you can predict, like how much the venue will cost, there are other factors not so easy to predict, like how many guests will show up,” said certified financial planner Shannah Compton Game, host of Millennial Money Podcast. “Most wedding budgets turn out to be a loose guideline of how much the wedding will cost, which is why I always suggest adding a 20% to 30% pad in your budget.” No matter how well-planned and well-intetioned a budget is, things change, so it’s imporant to stay on top of expenses, Game said. “Set a goal number that you don’t want to cross. If you are inching close to that number there are always ways to be resourceful and save money,” she said.

you and then find ways to be resourceful in the other areas. For instance, you could go to a flower mart and get your flowers on the day of the wedding for a fraction of the price, or have guests use a wedding photography mobile app to snap pictures and then utilize your photographer for a half-day or select pictures,” Game said. “You could also turn to Airbnb or other vacation rental sites to book an alternative wedding venue or reception location.”

Take the long view

“I definitely discourage couples from going into debt for their wedding. It simply isn’t worth it at the end of the day,” Game said. “Figure out how much money you can realistically spend and create an amazing wedding within that dollar amount. ... Be realistic and remember marriage is about the lifelong commitment and not just the wedding day.”

Finding funds

While parents are often the No. 1 source of financing, couples also dip into personal savings, use credit cards and even turn to crowdfunding, Game said. “Credit cards offer so many amazing perks these days that it’s hard to pass up. If you plan on using a credit card to bank points for your wedding expenses, always make sure you can pay off the balance in full within 30 days so you never incur interest expenses,” she said. Plan wisely, and you might be able to bank enough points to use for your honeymoon costs or a one-year anniversary celebration, she said.

Break it down

Start with a spreadsheet and break it down into three sections: expenses prior to the wedding, day-of expenses and after-the-wedding expenses, Game said. When budgeting be sure to add in honeymoon costs. “Most people do neglect including the honeymoon on their budget, which can be a sizeable expense,” she said. “If you are paying out of pocket for the trip, you want to make sure and include not only your airfare but the hotel, food, activities and any transportation on your budget.”

Where to cut

If costs are adding up, cuts need to be made. “The most expensive costs for any wedding are the location, food, flowers and photography. Anytime a vendor hears the word ‘wedding’ they immediately add a surcharge to the price,” Game said. There are hacks to cut costs. “My suggestion is to pick one or two that really mater to

rom the bouquet to the boutonniere, table centerpieces to photo opportunities, flowers are a defining part of a wedding and a classic way to set the tone of the day. They may be always in style, but as trends change designers add new floral techniques to keep things fresh. “Floral designers have been bringing the outdoors in for a while now, creating trees and floral installations for luxury weddings,” said Lauren Grech, CEO and co-founder of LLG Events and adjunct professor in event production and design at New York University. “However, in 2020, we’re going to see this expand beyond the table arrangements to include more flower walls for photo booth

backdrops, overhead installations either with flowers dangling from the ceiling or bridging over the tops of tables, and trails of flowers such as along the entire length of an aisled mirror.” Uniquely shaped low table arrangements, such as crescent-shaped structures and floral rings, are another emerging trend, Grech said.

Reuse, recycle

One of the hottest wedding floral trends is sustainability. In addition to choosing locally sourced flowers, more couples are opting to donate their flowers and extend the life of their blooms through companies like Repeat Roses or BloomAgainBklyn, organizations that recover floral arrangements that otherwise would have ended up in the trash, Grech said. It’s a service Grech offers all her clients “because some may not realize the legacy they can leave with their

love by having their wedding flowers recreated into arrangements for people in need or nursing homes or hospitals,” she said. “Another way to do this is to have someone gift wrap your florals for guests to take home as a favor at the end of the night. It’s a beautiful remembrance from your special day,” Grech said.

No bouquets

Brides are also getting more creative with their bouquets, with some ditching the nosegay altogether. Some brides opt for elaborate floral crowns so they don’t have to worry about handing it off to their maid or man of honor, Grech said. “This is perfect for outdoor ceremonies or couples who want a bohemian feel. Others are opting for smaller bouquets so that they can spend on bigger decor statements like a ceremony arch or chuppah with canopies of single, hanging flowers,” Grech said. Instagram-worthy backdrops are all the rage, but a full floral wall can be expensive. Budget-conscious couples can opt for a flower frame instead of a full flower backdrop, Grech said. Customize it with tiny fairy lighting throughout or LED lights with wording mixed in, Grech said.

wildfire. It was the floral trend for sure,” Grech said. “Elaborating on that, in 2020 you’ll continue to see a lot of mixed floral elements like feathers, berries, branches, eucalyptus, dried elements and vines.” Color makes an impact, and many couples are opting for more bold pops of color rather than muted neutral tones, Grech said.

Natural look

Popular wedding flowers like calla lilies, peonies and roses are mainstays of many weddings, but are now being passed over or accompanied by ornamental grasses and dried flowers. “Last year, pampas grass spread like

o ensure that your wedding is a happy and joyous affair, plan for the tricky situations that can pop up and handle them with grace. “Greet the process with patience, curiosity, respect and love,” said celebration expert Kimberly Allen, co-owner of Something Fabulous event designers based in Detroit and Washington, D.C. “Remember that weddings are emotionally charged affairs that can trigger and excite. It’s not about the flowers, venues, menu or transportation schedule. It is about the memory you are making with and for each other and the ones that you love. That memory begins the moment someone says ‘yes’ and follows you through beyond ‘I do.’”

Honoring a deceased parent or grandparent

Flowers, heirloom keepsakes and favorite photographs are some of the many

ways to honor deceased loved ones during the wedding ceremony and reception, Allen said. “Flowers have had their special meanings for centuries, and often couples will select this symbol of Hat and boots remembrance as a way to of the late Larry honor parents, grandparHull, Jr., father ents or other cherished of the bride. loved ones who have passed on,” Allen said. “Another simple and popular gesture are photographs placed around the reception or on a special table. Everyone enjoys these, and often they act as conversation starters and provide storytelling opportunities to truly engage the loved ones in memory,” Allen said. If a formal program is printed, share the story behind the gesture so that guests understand the significance, she said.

Letting guests know they should not take photos

“It’s perfectly fine to make an announcement or two before the ceremony or even post a tasteful sign in strategic entry points at the venue” to let guests know the bride and groom don’t want guests to photograph the ceremony, Allen said. “These can be effective. Chances are if a guest is going to ignore you, another guest will help remind them of the no cell phone request.” Keep in mind that some people may ignore your request. “If your usher is comfortable with a friendly, ‘Oh, hey, could you please put your phone away? Suzie and Jim would like to keep things unplugged, thank you!’ That’s fine, but policing doesn’t really belong in a wedding environment, so the tone and manner of the message must remain polite and gracious,” Allen said.

Marriage License Process Steps to getting a Marriage License By Elisabeth Slay (405) 214-3926 | eslay@news-star.com | Twitter: @ElisabethSlay

Before couples get married they must receive their marriage license and the process, though simple, may not be known to most. According to Pottawatomie County Clerk Jeannie Hallam, the process of couples getting their marriage license in Shawnee and surrounding areas has a few different steps. "When they come to get the marriage license they need to have a valid identification, one that is not expired or they can use their birth certificate," Hallam said. Hallam explained couples in Pott. County are required to pay $50 in cash and if they would like to be married by a judge they must pay a $10 judge's fee. "If they've had counseling the fee for the license is $5. They need four hours of counseling and they need a letter or certificate," Hallam said. The deputy clerk also said the certificate or letter must be signed by the couple's counselor. When couples go to the court house, Hallam said, they just need to make sure they have all of their required documents and the licensed will be issued the same day. "After the licensed is issued, they will have 10 days to use it and after they're married they will have five days to take it to the courthouse to be recorded," Hallam said. The deputy clerk said depending on how busy the day is the clerks can record it that same day or mail the license back to the couple. In addition, Hallam said if a couple has an online ordained minister or pastor they need to make sure he or she is registered in the state of Oklahoma. "They need to verify that before they get married," Hallam said.

Romantic touches and bold statements define 2020 bridal trends By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

rom big, ruffled wedding gowns to sophisticated bridal blazers, boho-chic to floral fantasies, today’s designers offer brides the opportunity to express their individuality when they step up and say, “I do.” For inspiration, the vast majority of brides turn to Pinterest and Instagram because it’s easy to search by hashtags or designers, while others still like to flip through magazines to see what’s in style, said Laura Calderone, owner of Laura & Leigh Bridal in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Blurring the line “The main trend for 2020, which really has been consistently building for the last five years or so, is the blurring of the line between ready-to-wear and bridal,” said Kpoene’ Kofi-Nicklin, creative director of Mignonette Bridal in Chicago. “For some companies, like BHLDN, this means offering separates (tops, bottoms and overlays that can be mixed and matched) so that brides can personalize a look, and for other companies like Cecilie Bahnsen that can mean offering pieces that blur the line between bridal and ready-to-wear completely and really can be worn again.” Affordability is important to the modern bride, Kofi-Nicklin said. This concept offers a bride new ways to make her wedding outfit unique and looks that can be worn multiple ways and on multiple occasions. Return to romance “If there was a prize for a bridal trend that is truly timeless and classical, it would definitely go to off-the-shoulder wedding dresses,” said Valeria Istomnia, content manager at Wedding Forward, an online guide for wedding planning, ideas and inspiration. “Their romantic image is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a fairy-tale princess attire.”

12

2020 BRIDE

Mix it up “2020 has a great mix of trends” like “fun necklines, low plunges, crescent necklines or off-the-shoulder, Calderone said. “There is also a lot of sparkle and fun laces with layers of shimmery tulle and bold modern laces. You’re going to probably see some keyhole backs and clean/classic A-lines have a little comeback, too.” “Bohemian style has been on top for more than one year, and it remains one of the hottest weddings dresses for 2020,” Istomnia said.

Fun florals “I love that florals, especially in bold colors, are having a moment, and the best part is that anyone can look beautiful in this trend,” Kofi-Nicklin said. Want to make a floral splash? “Choosing a gown with a large floral print or even just a single large floral pattern on the skirt is a great way to show off your personality. Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera have shown some truly amazing floral wedding gowns in the last few years,” Kofi-Nicklin said. Want to embrace florals in a delicate way? “Picking a gown in shades of blush or champagne with floral embroidery is a great way to look like you just stepped out of a romantic garden,” Kofi-Nicklin said. A gown with a subtle floral lace detail is a great way to nod to the trend while keeping the overall look very classic, she said.

most requested styles. “It’s easy to see why. Fit and flares show off a bride’s curves without being too heavy or dramatic, and A-lines show off a bride’s tiny waist in an airy way,” Calderone said. Show off your silhouette “Your silhouette has never been more attractive,” Istomnia said. A-line dresses or mermaid gowns give a bride the perfect opportunity to show off all of her curves. “Its low back will open up your fragile shoulder blades. The skirt will highlight your hips. Flow-

ing fabric, delicate patterns, gentle lace: These dresses are sure to turn heads,” Istomnia said. A-lines and fit and flares are are some of the

Add some sparkle “Sequins are a spectacular choice,” Istomnia said. “For more traditional brides craving glamour, elaborate beading, pearl detailing and rhinestones make for an ultraglitzy gown, from bridal white shades to shimmering silver and gold hues. Also, a glitzy gown is a perfect second look for a wedding reception,” Istomnia said.

Cover up Long-sleeved gowns remain one of the hottest trends because they look classy, Istomnia said. For examples, see Meghan Markle’s wedding gown from 2018 and one of Hailey Baldwin Bieber’s three choices from October. Other options include a leather jacket for the chill bride who wants to have fun, or a beautiful faux or a vintage fur, Kofi-Nicklin said. “Capes in drapey tulle and net have been huge this year, and are an incredibly romantic way to make a statement without feeling like you are actually covering up your gown,” she said. 2020 BRIDE

How to get a passport The long-held tradition of a dreamy honeymoon trip can quickly become a nightmare if the bride and groom aren't prepared to wait awhile for a passport. According to the official Department of State website, at travel.state.gov, it typically takes six to eight weeks to secure a passport.

Where

Though a form can be downloaded from the website, the application must be submitted in person — around here that means the Pottawatomie County Court Clerk's office, at 325 N. Broadway in Shawnee. Other nearby facilities are the Lincoln County Court Clerk's office, in Chandler; three sites in Norman: Oklahoma University, Sooner Station and the Norman Main Post Office; and a couple locations in Oklahoma City: Center City Station and the Oklahoma County Court Clerk's office.

What

With the form filled out, the applicant will then need to provide evidence of citizenship, current identification, and a recent photograph.

How much

A traditional passport book application

fee is $110, plus the Execution (Acceptance) fee, which is $35. Expedited applications cost more, but can cut the wait-time in half. Passport agencies and centers can help with travel dates within 14 days. Additional expedite fees are $60. There also are services that allow for Life-or-Death Emergencies — like illnesses, injuries or deaths in your immediate family — which can secure a passport within 72 hours. Proof of the emergency and travel documents are required.

Passport Card

Though the passport book and passport card are both U.S. Passports, they are not the same thing. If issued for the full validity, they are both proof of your U.S. citizenship and identity, but a passport card cannot be used for international air travel. The passport card can be used for entering the U.S. at land border crossings and sea ports-ofentry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The Passport Card is Real ID compliant, so it can be used for domestic air travel.

How long

Once obtained, passports are valid for 10 years. For more information, call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) tollfree at 1 (877) 487-2778.
