PREPARE FOR
AT HOME By Danielle Braff

It’s good to be prepared for the worst but to hope for the best. Here are a few tips from the experts to help if a disaster strikes.
Severe thunderstorm If you’re stuck in a severe thunderstorm, you need to stay away from anything plugged in, including corded phones. Unplug your computer and turn off your air conditioner, as power surges from lightning can cause damage, according to Ready.gov, the Department of Homeland Security’s disaster resource website. Avoid contact with plumbing, as it can conduct electricity, and stay away from windows and doors.
Tornado A tornado may hit quickly, even approaching without warning and without a thunderstorm, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But a dark or greenish sky, a large low-hanging cloud and large hail may be signs that a tornado is near. If you notice these weather conditions and you are at home, avoid being near windows and glass doors because an exploding window can injure or kill you, the CDC said. The safest place to be is in the interior of your basement. If you don’t have a basement, head to the lowest floor of your home and go to an inside room without windows – possibly a center hallway, closet or bathroom. Stay under something sturdy like a heavy table or bench. Cover yourself with a blanket and protect your head with anything you can find, even your hands.
Fire During a fire, the most important thing to do is to get out of the home, stay out of the home and to call 911, according to the American Red Cross. If you’re trying to get out of the house and the door handles are warm, you need to keep those doors closed and find another exit. Stay low to the ground so that you’re crawling under the smoke. If the smoke or the heat are blocking all the exit routes, stay in the room with the doors closed, and if possible, put a wet towel under the door, open a window and use a flashlight to signal for help.

Snowstorm When you’re in the midst of a snowstorm, you should be running a trickle of water to prevent your pipes from freezing, according to the American Red Cross. Keep your pets indoors, and open your cabinets to allow the warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. The thermostat should stay at the same temperature during the day and night. While your heating bill may be slightly higher by doing this, you can prevent an even higher bill by keeping your pipes from freezing. If you must leave the house, wear warm, loose-fitting closing in several layers.

Flood If your home floods, avoid walking through the floodwater and go to higher ground, according to the National Flood Insurance Program. If water continues rising in your home, go to the top floor, the attic or even to the roof, listening to a battery-operated radio for storm information. If advised to do so, turn off utilities at the main power switch. OKC & Surrou nding Areas
