Civil War-Era Wooden Bench Workshop to be

held at Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center CHECOTAH, Okla. — Visit Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center on Saturday, September 15, from 1–3 p.m. for a handson, Civil War-era wooden bench workshop. Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to construct their very own Civil War-era, five-board bench. All supplies and wood working tools will be provided with a $10 workshop fee. Light refreshments will be available for those who attend and participate in the workshop. Materials for constructing the bench will be supplied on a firstcome, first-served basis. Participants will get to take home their very own Civil War-era bench! The workshop will be taught by Jacob Krumwiede, assistant director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums located in Claremore and Oologah, Okla. Before and during the Civil War, large armies marched thousands of miles while stopping to rest along the way. Once in camp, it was imperative for soldiers to have simple benches to construct for a little extra comfort. They also were used in officers’ headquarters while discussing strategies for upcoming conflicts.

While at the site, take a tour of our new Visitor Center and temporary exhibits, buy Civil War-related items from our gift shop, and learn about our upcoming permanent exhibits. The battlefield also will be open for visitors from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. For more information about this program or upcoming programs, call 918473-5572 or email alynn@okhistory.org. To find Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center, take the second left after the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame and Museum located in Rentiesville (driving from the west). The Visitor Center is located on the hill. Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society. The mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society is to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1893 by members of the Territorial Press Association, the OHS maintains museums, historic sites and affiliates across the state. Through its research archives, exhibits, educational programs and publications the OHS chronicles the rich history of Oklahoma. For more information about the OHS, please visit www.okhistory.org.

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park presents

Richard III

Elizabeth, Alexis Ward as Queen Margaret, Alexis Pudvan as Lady Anne, and Justin Armer as Duke of Buckingham.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma- William Shakespeare's stunning portrait of Machiavellian genius and the murderous quest for absolute power, comes alive on OSP's outdoor stage at the Myriad Gardens September 13th through the 28th. In this original game of thrones we are engaged by a cunning, charismatic, and heartless tyrant who will stop at nothing to secure England's crown. England's civil Wars of the Roses is replaced by a period of promised peace, but the scheming Richard, Duke of Gloucester, plans to take the throne following the death of his newly crowned brother, Edward IV, by seduction, betrayal, or any means necessary. Twisted inside and out by bitter discontent and determined to remove any impediment to the crown, Richard hurtles down a path of moral demise and military destruction, setting the stage for a new hero to rescue England and a new house to reign. Judith Pender and Kathryn McGill direct this Shakespearean tragic-history play. The cast features Tyler Woods* as Richard III, Joe Burleigh as Duke of Clarence, Rick Lockett as Edward IV, Sarah Lomize as Duchess of York, Alyssa Fantel as Queen

The infusion of humor is not uncommon in a Shakespeare tragedy. In this play, Richard shares with the audience one side of his personality, while portraying a very different persona in and among his realm. The dichotomy of charismatic villain provides much of the wit and levity Shakespeare created for this character - while also displaying his calculating intellect - in spite of the grim plot. And, it is because of this rich personality that audiences fall in love with Richard III even as he is at his most conniving manipulative self. “Richard III” is recommended for audiences 8 and older. *Member Actor's Equity

Single ticket prices are $20 for adults with discounts available for groups of 10 or more, seniors, students, military, and educators. Tickets are available at www.oklahomashakespeare. com or by calling 1 (800) 838-3006. Richard III By William Shakespeare Directed by Judith Pender and Kathryn McGill

OKC to celebrate the life and legacy of Jim Henson at the American Banjo Museum The world’s most famous amphibian, Kermit the Frog, will soon be on display in Oklahoma City as the star of a new exhibit at the American Banjo Museum. Opening in early September, Jim Henson – Life and Legacy fondly remembers the optimistic visionary who created the Muppets and positively influenced generations of the young and young at heart. From his boyhood in Mississippi to innovative early television to omnipresence in generation shaping media, Jim Henson lived his mission of “leaving this world a little bit better place for having been here.” Born in 1936 near Leland, Mississippi, Henson’s artistic propensity was encouraged by his maternal grandmother. After his family moved to Washington, D.C. and nature’s wonders gave way to film, radio, and the modern marvel called television, with his father’s purchase of a TV set in 1950, Henson knew he had found his calling. Determined to be part of the booming industry, he landed a job as a puppeteer on a Washington morning children’s program. Seeing puppetry as a way to grow along with the new medium, it all came together in 1955 when Henson found almost immediate television success with his first puppet show, Sam and Friends. Naming his creations Muppets (because he liked the sound of the word), Henson’s growing troupe of characters found work in countless innovative television commercials and soon found themselves as guest stars on national network variety shows. In 1963, with

Rowlf the Dog emerging as a regular on The Jimmy Dean Show, the first Muppet star was born. While the 1960s also saw Henson applying his boundless creativity to experimental films and video techniques, when a new cast of Muppet characters took up residence on Sesame Street in 1969, his identity as both a puppeteer as well as an icon of children’s entertainment were firmly established. In the mid 1970s, Henson wanted to connect with an adult audience by introducing his Muppets to the literal “who’s who” of the entertainment world, the networks were not interested. With the support of British entertainment impresario, Lord Lew Grade, The Muppet Show was ultimately produced in England and syndicated to a worldwide audience.

The Banjo Connection Throughout his career, Jim Henson’s lifelong affection for the banjo was obvious. From Kermit’s earliest banjo appearance on Sam and Friends in the 1950s and 1960s to The Muppet Show guest stars such as Roy Clark and Steve Martin to Muppet characters- including The Country Trio featuring a Muppet version of himself – Jim Henson presented the music and visual dynamic of the banjo to an international audience in the most entertaining and positive manner imaginable. It is, however, those magical three minutes and twenty seconds which open 1979’s The Muppet Movie which will forever connect Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog, with the banjo. As Kermit strums his banjo and whimsically ponders the life questions subtly embedded into the lyrics of The Rainbow Connection, he finds the inner voice we all seek, telling us that

we can accomplish anything. Far beyond its Academy Award© nomination, the touching sentiment of The Rainbow Connection is proof positive of the timeless appeal of Jim Henson’s optimistic philosophy.

The Muppets Banjo In addition to Kermit the Frog, original artwork, rare photographs, pop culture objects and many very personal insights, Jim Henson – Life and Legacy will feature a very special banjo as well. One of the most famous banjos of all time, the Muppets Banjo, originally owned and played by British musician Martin Kershaw, has arguably accompanied more stars than any other banjo in history. After playing the banjo at Royal variety shows for Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret, Martin Kershaw was engaged to be part of the studio band for The Muppet Show which was produced in England from 1976 to 1981. When Muppet Show guest star Julie Andrews signed the head of Kershaw’s banjo in 1977, a tradition began. During subsequent tapings of The Muppet Show, guest stars including Gene Kelly, Roy Rogers, Johnny Cash, Elton John, Diana Ross, Peter Sellers and many more signed the famous banjo until it became impossible to find even a tiny space to fit another signature. After nearly being destroyed in a fire, the Muppets Banjo was retired and subsequently acquired by Heather Henson, youngest daughter of Jim Henson. After musically mingling on over 7000 recordings with stage and screen legends such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, James Cagney, Peggy Lee, Danny Kaye, Fred Astaire and Sammy Davis, Jr., the Muppets Banjo will rest on its laurels at the American Banjo Museum as a truly unique piece of banjo history. After a brief illness, Jim Henson was taken from this world suddenly in 1990. His sad passing makes all the more special the magic which happened each time he brought one of his creations to life. As Kermit the Frog spoke, Henson, the man, seemed to disappear. We want to believe in Kermit because he – like Henson - exudes a sincerity and kindness that we’d all like to see in ourselves. Jim Henson – Life and Legacy was curated by Karen Falk of The Jim Henson Company and appears, in part, by a grant from the Jane Henson Foundation. Running through August of 2019, the exhibit will officially open at noon on September 7th when Heather Henson will be on hand to cut the ribbon welcoming Jim Henson – Life and Legacy to the American Banjo Museum located in the Bricktown district of downtown Oklahoma City.

This marks the fifth production in Lyric’s New Works Initiative, which began in 2014 with the world premiere of Triangle and continued in 2015 with Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Mann… And Wife in 2016 – all staged at the Plaza Theatre. Last year, Lyric unveiled a new production of Disney’s When You Wish during its Summer at the Civic Center.

The cast features Van Hughes as John. Hughes’ Broadway credits include Spring Awakening, American Idiot, 9 to 5 and Hairspray. Cast in the lead role of Todd is John Furey. His credits include Anxiety Stew (Off-Broadway) and regionally, Hair, Spring Awakening and West Side Story. This will be both Hughes’ and Furey’s debuts with Lyric. The book and lyrics for When We’re Gone were written by Alana Jacoby with music from Scotty Arnold (both from New York). This production, which was eight years in the making, marks the team’s first collaboration with Lyric Theatre. It was presented at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals in 2016. “When We’re Gone mashes up a rock musical with a morality play,” said Michael Baron, Lyric’s producing artistic director. “Audiences who loved The Who’s Tommy will enjoy this wildly creative new musical that strikes a brilliant balance of modern-day characters with a pop-punk score.”

“The seed of this show is about asking how to justify art in a world that’s falling apart, and we don’t think the timing of its premiere is an accident,” Arnold said. “Our cast is outstanding, including a couple of our favorite NYC performers joining an amazingly talented bunch of Oklahomans. Being in a room where these top-notch people are telling a story and making music together is going to be a pretty thrilling experience.” The production, directed by Baron, will feature scenic design by Adam Koch, costumes from Jeffrey Meek, lighting design by Helena Kuukka and sound design by Sam Kusnetz. Music direction will be provided by James Dobinson with stage management by Laurena Sherrill. Single tickets start at just $25, and the production is recommended for mature audiences only due to adult situations and language. 1.

Five ways

to have fun this weekend

In theaters this weekend is “Kin” a PG-13 rated sci-fi film about a recently released ex-con and his adopted teenage brother who are forced to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin as their only protection; and the historical thriller “Operation Finale” rated PG-13 about a team of secret agents set out to track down the Nazi officer who masterminded the Holocaust.

2. Go on a picnic to celebrate Eat Outside Day on Friday or just to bring

summer to a spectacular close for Labor Day weekend. It’s the perfect time to party, and whether you have a family picnic or a potluck with friends and loved ones, make sure you make the most of the time off.

3. If you plan on attending any tailgates, holiday potlucks or cook outs

on Saturday, be sure to bring the bacon to mark International Bacon Day and make those burgers and hot dogs extra tasty.

4. The college football season has already started and there are several

big games this holiday weekend. The NFL is not far behind as its season starts t a few days after Labor Day. Make sure your fantasy teams are in good order (or hold a fantasy draft with your buddies), set up your man cave and get ready for some fun.

5. Football not your thing? Don’t worry there are others sports on TV this weekend such as MLS, MLB and

NASCAR! In fact it’s a very special throwback weekend for NASCAR as the cup series head’s to South Carolina’s Darlington Raceway, the track “too tough to tame.” — More Content Now

Even though Shawnee came up short in week one, coach Billy Brown should feel pretty confident heading into the second game of the season. The Wolves came up one point short against a very good Choctaw team, losing 35-34 in week zero. This week, the Wolves will travel to Guthrie to face a Blue Jays squad that is fresh off a 57-19 throttling of Enid in week zero. In the 2017 meeting, Scout Cawvey channeled his inner Randy Moss, going off for 187 yards and four touchdowns in a 27-13 victory.Heath Hunter tossed the pigskin for 255 yards and three scores last year. Trenton Skinner even got involved in the passing game throwing a 10-yard touchdown. Tre'Juan Shaw was the leading rusher in the 2017 contest, carrying the rock 17 times for 65

yards. He also sacked the Guthrie quarterback twice and recorded seven tackles. Junior defensive back, Con'cere Spencer made his presence known in week zero against Choctaw. He broke up a few passes and recovered a fumble in the second half. Last year against Guthrie, Spencer recovered a fumble and recorded three tackles. Last week, Guthrie scored five times off Enid turnovers. Playing a mistake free game will be essential for the Wolves. Guthrie gave up 466 yards of offense. The five turnovers helped, but if Shawnee has the same production, they'll score a lot more points. This season, Hunter leads Shawnee with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns. The ground game is led by Shaw with two running scores. Skinner has a team-high 10 receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Shawnee suffered a few injuries to key players last week. Elijah Powis and Shaw went down in the second half. Both players are expected to return in some capacity against Guthrie. Elijah Bender was injured in a car accident on Saturday. He was cleared to return to practice mid-week. Kickoff will be 7 p.m. at Guthrie

#NSPreps Area Game of the Week:

Bethel vs. Tecumseh By Adam Ewing

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

The Bethel Wildcats will travel to Tecumseh to face the Savages in a week one matchup that will answer a lot of questions. Areas of focus include, Tecumseh's numbers and how that translates to winning football games and Bethel's lack of size and how that will match up

Raymond Thomas - Tecumseh

Will Hilton - Tecumseh

with the beef Tecumseh starts on the offensive and defensive line. Tecumseh will trot out an offensive line that averages 290 pounds. Caeden Shirey is one of the smaller lineman at 275 pounds, but he's a wrestler and is the leader on and off the field. Starting quarterback Will Hilton looks to have plenty of weapons at his disposal. The Savages have a backfield that impressed in pre-season scrimmages. Senior running back Raymond Thomas carried the rock throughout the Prague scrimmage and carved up opposing defenses. Bethel brings a quarterback-receiver combination that can put up some points. Devyn Acklin and Drae Wood are two legit threats that have big play potential. Quarterback Gunner Smith can sling the football and with another year in the system, he should improve on a 1,600 yard, 14 touchdown sophomore season. On defense, the Wildcats are led by Matthew Melter who led the 2017 squad with 81 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries. Tecumseh's defense will benefit from new defensive coordinator Larry Joubert and new defensive backs coach Phillip Spess. Coach Bullock sites their energy and believes it will make that side of the ball that much better. Kickoff is scheduled for a 7:30 start in TecumMatthew seh.

Sparks did the unthinkable. With her team down three runs in the bottom of the seventh, Sparks hit an inside the park grand slam to beat Guthrie 11-10. To put things in perspective, the only time a walk-off insidethe-park grand slam occurred in the MLB was July 25, 1956. The feat was accomplished by Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

These athletes are now automatically invited to the 3rd annual Best of News-Star Preps Banquet to be held May 6, 2019 at Firelake Arena

Area games slated for week one McLoud Redskins at Meeker Bulldogs (1-0) – 7 p.m. Meeker is fresh off a 32-6 win over Luther. The Bulldogs ran the ball efficiently in the dominating win. Sophomore Caden Wolford led the team with 207 yards and three scores. The Bulldog defense got after the quarterback, sacking the opposition five times. McLoud will rely on their run game with Damien Dye expected to get a bulk of the carries. There is a glaring question mark at quarterback. If Koalton Keller can get the ball to Tyler Jones and Mason Nikkel, the running game should open up and Dye could have a big game.

Damien Dye - McLoud

Harrah Panthers (0-1) at Seminole Chieftains – 7:30 p.m.

Cashion Wildcats at Prague Red Devils – 7:30 p.m.

With Harrah fresh off a 30-7 beatdown at the hands of Anadarko, Mike Snyder and the Seminole Chieftains have to smell blood in the water. Last season, Seminole beat Harrah 14-0 in their backyard and it shouldn't be much different this year. The Chieftains are senior heavy, returning 14 athletes that have been in Mike Snyder's system. Quarterback Cade Hammond leads the group and has plenty of options at his disposal. From a stacked backfield, that rushed for1,848 yards and 26 touchdowns last year, to crop of receivers that has big-play potential, the Chieftains are going to put up a lot of points this season.

Brayden McGinnis - Prague

Prague has two big-time athletes that will draw plenty of attention. Jack Schultz moved to tight end after gaining some inches and putting on 20 pounds of muscle in the off-season. His size and stat line of 1,107 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last year will certainly draw the attention of the Cashion defense.

Move-in senior, Brayden McGinnis, will be a workhorse in the backfield and a playmaker on defense. At 240 pounds, McGinnis is a load to bring down and with his quick feet and experience playing much larger schools, he's should lead the team in tackles.
