WOLVES LOOK TO MAKE NOISE IN RETURN TO 6A By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

Shawnee is jumping into the big pond. With the move to Class 6A, the Wolves will rely on returning starters if they want to make the playoffs. “It's not the 6A we were in a few years ago,” coach Billy Brown said. “We aren't running up against Jenks and Broken Arrow and teams like that. I think the difference is, there's no easy wins. For us, there's no team on our schedule that we can say is an easy win.” There were a few starters that transferred and a few that simply didn't want to play because of the transition to 6A, coach Brown said. “The players we have out this year, I wouldn't trade for a million dollars,” Brown said.

“The ones we have are putting in the work every day,” he said.

the rest of the guys, we will have to have a rotation.”

The offense will be led by senior quarterback Heath Hunter. He had a successful season, Heath finished with 2,357 passing yards and 18 touchdowns last season.

The defensive line will consist of Reed Stewart, Elijah Bender and Addison Smith, with the fourth starting spot still up in the air.

“Heath has the experience and had a really good year last year,” Brown said.

Starting linebackers will be Powis, Shaw and Xavier Reed.

The Shawnee backfield is stacked with some of the strongest athletes poundfor -pound. Returning starter Tre'Juan Shaw rushed for 866 yards last season. The way he ran in the scrimmage against Ardmore, he has a good chance at hitting 1,000. Joining him in the backfield is Elijah Powis. Powis is a state champion powerlifter at 190-pounds and should have an immediate impact in the running game. “They a are two of the strongest athletes wil find on the field any given week,” you will Brown said. Shawn Shawnee's receivers are anchored by Trenton Skinner and Scout Cawvey. Both appear to be crisp route runners and have big-play potential. Skinner led the team with 744 yards receiving la year and Cawvey was the team last leader in touchdowns with nine. “ “Our receivers have the experie ence and are two of the best route r runners out of anyone we'll play,” B Brown said. “Trenton and Scout h have proven that they can play. We pl on playing a few different guys plan un we can figure out who fits the until be best.” The offensive line is a good mix of experience and youthful energy. The Shawnee secondary is fairly young, but full of talented athletes. Sophomores Zane Christopher and Demetries Beavers are slated to be the starting cornerbacks. Con'cere Spencer and Skinner will start th safety f t positions iti d freshman f h att the and Jaylon Orange will play a lot in the secondary, Brown confirmed. “Last year, Christopher and Beavers played freshman football. We lost our starting corners from last year. One transferred and the other is only playing baseball. The guys we have playing this year are very athletic and have worked hard to get ready for the season.”

the program,” Brown said. Shawnee's first game is Aug. 24 when they host Choctaw. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

On special teams, Kossi Kodoe is slated to be the kicker and Hunter will be the punter. There are some new faces on the coaching staff. Jack Dingus will be the line coach for Shawnee this year. Former Shawnee Wolves Brandon Davis and Landon Harper will fill in as position coaches. “They all bring a ton of enthusiasm and come prepared and ready to help build

SHAWNEE FOOTBALL GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY By Kent Bush kent.bush@news-star.com Twitter: @kentbush

Coach Billy Brown never set out to be a resume building coach. He is a program builder. His resume has two lines: 10 years in Wewoka and now he is working on his 18th year in Shawnee. This season marks his second foray into the 6A arena. He has had some of the best athletes in the state and he has coached through leaner years. Through it all, he has worked to build a program in Shawnee and make football players better - both on the field and off. One of the ways Brown has done that is instilling a sense of community service in his players.

this mentality immediately. Last winter, members of the team cleaned up fallen limbs for veterans and older residents after an ice storm. They have helped people move and this week, they helped at different schools in the district move desks and other equipment for teachers. Even if schools have employees whose job is to do that work, few of them are as strong as the linemen and other football players who help out.

I think I liked helping at the school the most," he said.

These aren't projects that the coaches have to force athletes to do.

Reid Stewart is another senior who helped move equipment at the schools. He said the project helped them as a team.

"All we do is let the guys know where they are needed and they show up," Brown said. Sergio Garcia said working at the schools was his favorite project they have completed.

One position group that has adopted that sense of community is the linemen. "These guys are a family," Brown said. "They eat supper together once a week, they work out together and they do projects as a group."

"We got to help a lot of people at the school this week," Garcia said. "It was a good time and they appreciated our help."

New line coach Jack Dingus settled into

"It is always fun to work with the guys, but

Addison Smith agreed.

Garcia said while the players are enjoying themselves doing the work, the coaches are the ones who should get the credit. "Coach Brown and Coach Dingus do a great job of getting us involved to help in the community and do these things," Garcia said.

“I liked being able to do more than play football with my teammates,” Stewart said. “Especially being able to help our community.”

McLOUD HAS SIGHTS SET ON RETURN TO PLAYOFFS By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

After a 4-6 campaign last season, the McLoud Redskins look to return to the playoffs for the second time under coach Rusty Hall. Along with the challenge of improving their record, McLoud also moves up to Class 4A. “There is no doubt in my mind that we can compete for a playoff spot,” Hall said. “With all of our guys returning, we have a tremendous amount of experience. I fully expect us to be in the playoffs.” In the preseason scrimmage against Chandler, the Redskins were able to find success running the football. Even though starter Damien Dye only carried the football a few times, Hall was impressed with the offense. Damien Dye

“Offensively we have to be balanced and establish a running game,” Hall said. “Damien will get about 65-percent of the carries and we will mix in a few different guys.” Dye has a chance to become McLoud's all-time leading rusher. He only trails his coach in the record books. He will need roughly 1,600 yards to top Hall. Along with his duties as the starting back, Dye is getting reps on defense and has played the corner position.

The McLoud Summer Pride program, which helps with strength and conditioning was a success this year, Hall said. “I think we are a little further along in terms of conditioning compared to last year,” He said. “I think the biggest thing is everyone is on the same page. The guys are wanting to workout and

do extra things. I have guys calling me asking what time the weight room will be open on Saturday. For us the mindset is changing and it's vey encouraging.” McLoud's first game will be Aug. 31 at Meeker. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. start.

One of the bright spots from the Chandler scrimmage was starting fullback Logan Wheat. He is also a starting linebacker for the Redskins. “I thought Logan Wheat did a really good job of blocking in the scrimmage,” Hall said. “He was one of the players who stood out. He's always making the correct block.” New defensive coordinator Stuart Thomp Thompson will help the Redskins transiti back to a four-man front. transition Mc The McLoud defense played well in the scrimm scrimmage and was flying around the wi a ton of intensity, Hall said. field with “Defens “Defensively I thought we played decently,” Hall said. “We were pretty gap sound a and did a great job of not giving p up big plays. We only gave up one big pass play so that was a good sign.” pass

Rusty Hall hopes to return to the playoffs for the second time in his head coaching career.

W the change in scheme, the With p players are really liking the adjustments, Hall said. ““I feel like we will be able to line u up quicker and be more gap s sound,” Hall said. “We will be a able to make decisions easier an and everyone knows what their resp responsibility is earlier. We will be blitzin blitzing a lot and the kids are excited d ar and are responding a lot better.” For the h Redskins to compete at the 4A For level, th the main thing is staying healthy, Hall sai said. Brandon Hadl (77) brings down a Chandler runner during a pre-season scrimage.

WILDCATS RETURN WITH HOPES OF MAKING PLAYOFFS By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

With another year in Coach Joey Ginn's system, the Bethel Wildcats are starting to find their way. “We are excited about our effort,” Ginn said. “It's really a night and day difference as far as enthusiasm is concerned. I feel so much better about going in to year two. We were so young last year so having a year in the weight room to develop and grow within the system was beneficial.” Gunner Smith returns as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats. As a junior, Smith threw for 1,602 yards and 14 touchdowns. In addition, he punched in four touchdowns on the ground.

“Gunner is a kid that has benefited from being thrown into the fire. We threw a whole lot at him. He's able to look at what the defenses are giving him. He's a kid that has really grown from the opportunities.” At running back, The first snap will go to Matthew Melter. Dez Loving will also get a chance to carry the football. Freshman Corey Metscher will have a chance for some carries on the varsity level. Melter and Loving had similar numbers last year, combining for 358 yards on the ground. “We didn't get to utilize Matt as much as we wanted to last year due to injuries,” Ginn said. “Matt is a defense-first guy, so if he ever needs a breather, we will look for the other two to get substantial carries.” Continued on page 16

Receivers Devin Acklin and Drae Wood appear to be in line for a big year. Acklin had the most yards last year with 690. Wood had a few big games as a freshman. He finished the season with 243 yards and three scores. “Both of those guys have a ton of athletic ability and are viable weapons who have benefitted from a year in the system. Devin is a guy who will make you miss and Drae is a glider. They bring two different skill sets to the table.” The offensive line is a bit undersized, but every athlete on the offensive line is scrappy, Ginn said. Cole Dyer returns as the starting center. He is a wrestler that is a workhorse in the weight room, Ginn said. Kaden Stiles returns at right guard. Ryan Partain and Tyler Roberts both have a chance to contribute up front. Senior Hunter Gambill returns to the gridiron for the first time in a few seasons. Gabel Ledbetter is a returning starter at left tackle and gives everything he has for an undersized lineman, Ginn said. Josh Rooker will start on the defensive line and the rest of the down lineman will be on a rotation until the group gels, Ginn said. Dez Loving will move to a linebacker position after playing defensive back last season. LW Moore will join him in the linebacker unit. Depending on the situation, Cache Hankins or Nathan Sanchez will get reps as well.

In the secondary, Wood and Jaylon Gordon will be on an island as coach Ginn relies on them to play a lot of oneon-one coverage. Acklin will start at safety and Brynnen Epperly and Jesse Tucker will fight for the other safety spot. Bethel starts the season at Tecumseh on Aug. 31. Kickoff is set for a 7:30 start.

MAUD TIGERS GEL UNDER SECOND - YEAR COACH By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

The Maud Tigers, under direction of second-year head coach Brant Hayes look to improve upon a 2-7 record last season.

are out there working day in and day out looking to get better.” Hayes went to the drawing board this summer and will be running different formations this season.

Even though the program struggled at times, coach Hayes was able to recruit some new talent and will help right the ship in hopes of making the playoffs this season.

“I've had to do a better job adapting to the style of play,” Hayes said. “Coming from an 11-man style, I've had to do quite a bit of work coming up with some new sets and plays to get our players a chance to put up some points.”

“One of the biggest positives in the attitudes of our players,” Hayes said. “This group of kids really gets after it in practice and in the weight room.”

The Tigers will rely upon senior running back Brady Arms and junior quarterback Lane Brooks as the key playmakers, Hayes said.

For the first game last season, Maud suited up 10 players, this year they have 20 kids on the preseason roster.

Roman Cox has the size and speed to be a legit threat at receiver this season, Hayes said.

Brant Hayes coaches up his players in a pre-season practice.

“The increased numbers have really helped in practice,” Hayes said. “The kids really hook up and have to compete each day. Now we have kids who

On defense, junior Bryxton Sanders will be one of the key players looking to help the Tigers improve on last season.

Week one, Maud will travel to Bowlegs for the Highway 59 Bowl. Last year the Tigers beat Bowlegs 58-8 and were able to regain the traveling trophy.

This year they travel to Bowlegs Aug. 30 for a Thursday night tilt. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

#NSPREPS PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

1. Seminole Chieftains – Oklahoma coaching legend Mike Snyder will have plenty of options this season. With his starting quarterback Cade Hammond returning the Chieftains have a great shot at making a deep playoff run. The Seminole backfield remains intact with Cameron Gunville and Jamon Dennis combining for 1,848 yards and 26 touchdowns last year. The Chieftains receiving corps looks to have big play ability as well. Four returning offensive line standouts are back, including three-year starter Callen Rigney at right tackle. Other returning starters include right guard Terry Walker, center Luke Wieck and left guard Kaden Allison.

On defense, they return the News-Start's Best of Preps Small School Player of the Year Justin Hamilton and three-year starter Mark Beauford. Jared Stewart and his 13 sack sophomore year, along with Chico Baker's three defensive touchdowns last season give the Chieftains one of the best defenses in the area. 2. Shawnee Wolves – Shawnee enters their first year of 6A football with plenty of talent returning from a 7-4 2017 campaign. Coach Billy Brown will rely on senior quarterback Heath Hunter to lead his offense. Last season Hunter threw for 2,357 yards and 18 touchdowns. Returning receivers, Trent Skinner and Scout Cawvey combined for 1,417 yards and 13 touchdowns, so he will have plenty of options. The backfield returns Tre Shaw who rushed for a team-high 866 yards and

six scores in 2017. He looks to share carries with defending state powerlifting champion Elijah Powis who will also be relied upon on both sides of the ball The offensive line will be led by Sergio Garcia who is a wall of a human at 6'5” 300-plus pounds. New line coach Jack Dingus will look to coach up players like Josh Hair and Koby Mitchell, both Continued on page 24

sophomores, who will get a lot of playing time this season. On defense, Brown expects big things from returning starter Elijah Bender. He believes Addison Smith will contribute on the line and sophomore Demetress Beavers at defensive back. Skinner and Cawvey could be in line for some reps in the defensive backfield as well. 3. Prague Red Devils - Expect senior receiver/tight end Jake Schultz to be targeted early and often for whoever ends up playing quarterback for the Red Devils. Trevor Mills is expected to get first team reps at quarterback. On the offensive line, coach John Graham expects Dalton Cooper and and Seth Cooper to provide plenty of protection for Mills. Defensively, senior transfer Brayden McGinnis will be the leader from day one. Branom Bailey and Isaac Bloomer will be relied upon in the secondary. 4. McLoud Redskins – With Damien Dye returning for a shot at the Redskins'

rushing record, he should get plenty of opportunities as coach Rusty Hall looks to find his new starting quarterback. The offensive line has five athletes who all received playing time last season. Brandon Hadl, Denzel Harris, Hayden Heath, Teddy Bailey, Jayton Wells and Conner Cheney all get playing time this season. The Redskins will return to a 4-3 base defense and Brandon Vinson will look to improve on a relatively successful junior season. In seven games last season, Vinson recorded seven sacks and had 54 tackles. Logan Wheat will lead the linebackers this year. Mason Nikkel broke up 13 passes as a junior and should have some success shutting down 4A receivers. 5. Tecumseh Savages – Coach Ty Bullock has done an excellent job recruiting the high school. Bullock confirmed there will be several position battles during the first few weeks of practice and the culture of Tecumseh football is starting to change for the better. 6. Bethel Wildcats – The duo of Gunner Smith and Devin Acklin should provide plenty of offense for the Wildcats this

season. Much like all the teams in the area, the Wildcats have been putting in a ton of work this offseason. 7. Meeker Bulldogs – Coach DJ Howell should rely heavily on junior athlete Jacob Martin on offense. Martin was the Meeker's leading passer last season with 1,287 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for 570 yards and three scores to help the Bulldogs to a 5-6 record. 8. Chandler Lions – The Lions will rely on junior quarterback Daniel Jackson who tore his ACL against Prague last year. If healthy, the Lions should improve on their 2017 record of 3-8.

Second-year coach Ty Bullock is rejuvinating the Tecumseh football program.

9. Maud Tigers – The only 8-man football team in our coverage area and second-year coach Brant Hayes seem to do a lot with

very little. Hopefully they can get a few more kids out for the team.

NEWS-STAR'S BEST OF PREPS PRE-SEASON WATCH LIST: OFFENSE By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

With just under a week until football practice starts, I can't get any more excited about the upcoming football season. There is a ton of local talent ready to showcase their skills every Friday night. As we prepare for game night here at the News-Star, we've discussed several games that are must-see each Friday. Along with those games, there are players who will make some noise this season. On offense we will start with the glamorous quarterback position. Heath Hunter, Sr., Shawnee High School Heath returns for his senior campaign as the area's leading passer. Heath finished with 2,357 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. His arm strength appears to be well above average and with two of his main targets in Scout Cawvey and Trent Skinner returning, their chemistry will be beneficial. According to qbhitlist.com, Hunter is the eighth ranked gunslinger in Oklahoma. Cade Hammond, Sr., Seminole High School Hammond is one of the first players that came to mind for a must watch list. Despite missing a few games late last season due to a concussion, Hammond finished with 1,284 yards and threw 13 touchdowns. Currently he’s ranked fifth on the qbhitlist.com ranking system for Oklahoma prep quarterbacks. The Chieftains return plenty of weapons for Hammond's senior season and his numbers should be some of the best in the area.

Gunner Smith, Jr., Bethel High School Smith has been the Wildcats quarterback since half way through his freshman season. Despite learning on the fly, Smith had some good numbers last season, including a six touchdown performance against Star Spencer. Smith threw for just over 1,600 yards last season, tossed 14 touchdowns and added four more on the ground. With many schools utilizing multiple players in the backfield, coming up with names at this position was the toughest on the offensive side of the ball. Damien Dye, Sr., McLoud High School With a good season Dye has a chance at Redskin immortality. He trails his coach Rusty Hall in the record books for the all-time leading rusher in McLoud history by 1,600 yards. Dye reminds me an awful

lot of Warrick Dunn. He runs hard every play even if there's no daylight. For his size, Dye is one of the toughest poundfor-pound in the area. The Seminole backfield When looking at the Chieftains, I couldn't pick just one of their backs. Senior Jamon Dennis and junior Cameron Gunville are the Seminole version of thunder and lightning. Having one good back is great, but Mike Snyder has two legit options. That entire offense is going to be scary. The two-headed monster combined for 1,848 yards and 26 touchdowns. Gunville led the duo with 978 yards and Dennis led the Chieftains in rushing touchdowns, crossing the goal line 14 times. Tre'Juan Shaw, Sr., Shawnee High School Shaw enters his senior season at the starting running back for the Wolves. Shaw split carries last year and still finished with 866 yards on the ground and recorded six touchdowns. As far as 6A backs go, Shaw is a bit undersized, but is strong and fast enough that if he can find a hole he's can pick up serious yards.

Shawnee's Heath Hunter finished with 2,357 yards and 18 touchdowns last season.

With the days of three yards and a cloud of dust all but forgotten, receivers and tight ends play a much bigger role in high school offenses.

Trenton Skinner, Sr. Shawnee High School Looking at his numbers from last year, he was Hunter's go to receiver with 741 yards and four touchdowns. Watching Skinner play in the seven-on-seven at Meeker, he seemed to be Heath's go-to guy, with Wes Welker-like potential. Skinner looked like a kid who isn't afraid to go over the middle and make plays away from his body. Jake Schultz, Sr., Prague High School One look at Schultz and you can tell he's a football player. The now 6'3” 220-pound athlete will offer whoever is playing quarterback at Prague a legit threat anywhere on the field. One of the most memorable games I covered was Shultz torching Bethel for six receptions, 292 yards and five touchdowns. With the added inches and weight, it's expected that Schultz will play more tight end this year. Add his above average speed, don't be surprised if he leads the area in receiving this year. Tyler Jones, Jr., McLoud High School When I watch Jones play, he reminds me of a Percy Harvin-type player. The kid can do it all on the field. He played receiver, ran the ball on occasion and even filled in at quarterback. He wasn't a week one starter on offense, but as the season progressed Jones found himself playing both ways every Friday night. On offense, Jones had 278 yards receiving and caught two touchdowns. He was also a playmaker on defense recording 21 tackles and had one interception. Saybion Battles, Jr., Seminole High School Looking at some of the summer camp highlights, Battles is going to give opposContinued on page 29

ing defenses trouble. Single coverage is not an option when it comes to the junior receiver. He has big time speed and you can't teach that. He was not a big option in the Mike Snyder offense last season, however his tape this summer proves he possesses the ability to make plays. Devin Acklin, Jr., Bethel High School Acklin returns as Bethel's leading receiver. As a sophomore he put up very respectable numbers. He totaled 690 yards and three touchdowns. Acklin was a playmaker on defense, recording 65 tackles, two interceptions and one sack. He also added one blocked kick on special teams. As a kick returner Acklin added three more touchdowns. Scout Cawvey, Jr., Shawnee High School Cawvey has big play potential every time he touches the football. That is evident in his performance against Guthrie last season. The then-sophomore torched the opposition for four touchdowns in the first week of the season. Cawvey finished the season with 676 yards and nine scores. Dillon Morris, Sr., Tecumseh High School Despite Morris only catch seven balls for 80 yards last season, he's one of the players that have the most upside on this list. Talking to coach Ty Bullock, Morris is one of the most selfless guys on the team and will play every snap all out even if his

2018 PIGSKIN - VOLUME I number isn't called. He didn't light up the stat sheet last year, but was essential in the Tecumseh running game that eclipsed 3,000 yards last season. These next guys don't always get the recognition they deserve. They aren't the ones scoring touchdowns or converting third and shorts. They keep the quarterbacks upright and open the holes for backs to pick up extra yards. Sergio Garcia, Jr., Shawnee High School Garcia is everything you want in an offensive lineman. He's big, strong, and knows what he's doing. Shawnee has been fortunate to have some very good lineman over the last couple years and Garcia is in line to continue that trend. Coming in at 6'5” and 300-plus, Garcia is just the guy coach Billy Brown needs to shore up the offensive line as Shawnee enters their first season at the 6A level.

NEWS-STAR’S BEST OF PREPS PRE-SEASON WATCH LIST: DEFENSE By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

Dalton Cooper, Sr. Prague High School Cooper is another guy that looks the part. If you need a lineman, the 6'6” 290-pound senior is a guy that is one of the most physical players on the field every Friday night. A kid that plays to the whistle every snap is just what coach John Graham needs up front.

Offense wins games, but defense wins championships. Our coverage area has some legitimate playmakers on that side of the football. If we were to put together an all-star team from our area, I'm confident we would hold teams to single digits.

Caeden Shirey, Sr., Tecumseh High School

Brandon Vinson, Sr., McLoud High School

The 6'1” 275-pound wrestler just so happens to be one of Tecumseh's best football players. Coach Bullock raved about his nastiness on the gridiron. The stalwart of the Tecumseh front line tore his ACL early in his high school career and rebounded to start all 10 games for the Savages last season.

Vinson has a ton of upside when it comes

to his ability on the football field. In seven games last year, he had seven sacks and recorded 54 tackles. Vinson also disrupted opposing kickers, blocking several kicks throughout the season. The all-around athlete was a red zone threat catching passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Expect his role to increase as he becomes more comfortable on both sides of the ball. Jared Stewart, Jr., Seminole High School Stewart was a playmaker as a sophomore. He was in the backfield more times than any player on this list. His 13 sacks

Brandon Hadl, Sr., McLoud High School Hadl follows the trend of big athletes on the offensive line. McLoud offensive line coach David Heath says Hadl is a kid that understands concepts and schemes and is exactly what the Redskins need from their offensive line. He's a two-way player that will need to step up his game if McLoud wants to win games at the 4A level.

Damien Dye trails his coach Rusty Hall in the McLoud record books by 1,600 yards.

As the season rolls along, more players will be added to the watch list and ultimately the News-Star will release a Best of Preps All-Area Team at the conclusion of the season.

Seminole's Mark Beauford (89) and Jared Stewart (84) bring down the opposing quarterback.

30 • Friday, August 24, 2018 helped the Chieftains to an 8-4 record last season. He possesses all the right tools to be an elite player. Stewart's size, speed and athleticism will be a force the next two years.

2018 PIGSKIN - VOLUME I

Elijah Powis, Sr., Shawnee High School

Coach Ty Bullock had nothing but great things to say about his leader on the defensive line. A wrestler, Bingham has a relentless motor and is the first one to the weight room and the last to leave. His hard work and dedication off the field are evident. Last year, Bingham had 48 tackles, four sacks and seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also recovered one fumble.

After sitting out last season, coach Billy Brown said the senior linebacker is ready to get back on the field. Pound-for-pound, Powis is the strongest defensive player on this list and quite possibly the area. As a two-time state powerlifting qualifier and reigning powerlifting champ, he has the pedigree to prove it. He will also get some carries in the Wolves' backfield this season.

Elijah Bender, Sr., Shawnee High School

Area defensive backs seem to find their way to the endzone quite often. If they aren't scoring points on defense, they're breaking up passes at an elite level.

The linebacker position is stacked with talent. It was hard to limit the number to four players. As the season progresses more players will warrant a mention. Brayden McGinnis, Sr., Prague High School McGinnis will play his senior season at Prague after transferring from Shawnee High School. This kid is a beast with a nose for the football. Last year at Shawnee, McGinnis had 94 tackles, five sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and intercepted two passes. He's a two-way player that is going to be relied upon after Prague graduated several stars.

Justin Hamilton, Sr., Seminole High School The 2017-2018 News-Star's Best of Preps Small School Football Player of the Year returns with a chance to be the first ever two-time winner. Hamilton's six interceptions helped him win the award last season. His killer instinct puts him around the football on a regular basis. With a player like him coming back for another run, opposing quarterbacks have fewer options. Chico Baker, Sr., Seminole High School Given the amount of stars on the Chieftains' defense, their explosive offense should have plenty of chances to put up points. Baker did his fair share of scoring last season. He had two interceptions returned for a touchdown and picked up a fumble returning it for six. The duo of Baker and Hamilton will be scary this season.

Logan Wheat, Sr., McLoud High School Mason Nikkel, Sr., McLoud High School Wheat finds himself in the backfield more often than not. Despite being a little undersized for a linebacker, he was a legitimate pass rusher for the Redskins last season. He had 88 tackles and four sacks as a junior. If he was able to get stronger this off-season, he has a very good chance at 100 tackles and double digit sacks. Mark Beauford, Sr., Seminole High School

news-star.com

Beauford is one of the most reliable players on the Chieftains defense. He returns as a three-year starter on defense. Last year he had 93 tackles and with another year under his belt, he has a legitimate chance at 100 tackles.

Tyler Bingham, Sr., Tecumseh High School

After watching film on Bender, one thing stands out. He makes plays all over the field. As a junior he had 40-plus tackles and with his relentless motor, he should increase those numbers. Bender also looks like he can get after the quarterback on occasion.

Shawnee News-Star

As a junior, Nikkel broke up 13 passes. If he can turn a few of those into interceptions, he has a great chance at leading the area in picks. Add in his 24 tackles and one interception, Nikkel will help McLoud make the transition to 4A football this season. Branom Bailey, Sr., Prague High School If it wasn't for a broken arm that side-

McLoud's Logan Wheat rushes the Oklahoma Centennial quarterback last season.

lined Bailey last season, he would've put up good numbers. He had an interception returned for a touchdown against Luther in week three last year and should be able to duplicate his success from the first half of last season during the upcoming campaign.

As the season rolls along, more players will be added to the watch list and ultimately the News-Star will release a Best of Preps All-Area Team at the conclusion of the season.
