2018 Oklahoma Women In Aviation & Aerospace Day Event Set The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission in partnership with the Oklahoma Airport Operators Association (OAOA), Tulsa International Airport, and BizJet International will host the second annual Oklahoma Women in Aviation & Aerospace Day event on December 6 at the BizJet hangar at the Tulsa International Airport. The inaugural luncheon was held last year in Oklahoma City’s Atlantic Aviation hangar on Wiley Post Airport. Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace Day was enacted in 2017 to honor Eula Pearl Carter Scott, along with all women pilots, and aviation and aerospace professionals. Scott was born December 9, 1915 in Marlow, and was an enrollee of the Chickasaw Nation. Pearl learned to fly at the age of 13 under legendary aviator Wiley Post. She became the youngest pilot in the United States with her first solo flight in 1929. Kristy Slater, general aviation manager at Wiley Post Airport, is serving as the 2018 Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace Day event chair for the Oklahoma Airport Operators Association (OAOA). Slater said, “I am honored to be leading an event that recognizes the amazing work of women in aviation within the State. Today’s leaders are showing young women of all ages that the aviation and aerospace industry offers exciting opportunities ahead.” “I could not be more pleased to see OAOA and Tulsa International Airport take on the task of continuing to commemorate the contribu-

tions of women to aviation and aerospace,” said Victor Bird, director of the Aeronautics Commission. “The scholarships and community involvement surrounding the event will help spark aviation and aerospace interest in young women. We have a pilot shortage and a need for a competent workforce to keep the state’s second largest economic engine operating. We hope the community will come out and support the event, December 6, and bring their young children to explore the Tulsa Airport and BizJet hangar.” This year’s event will highlight two trailblazing aviators from the Tulsa community – Nan Gaylord and Jennifer Wise. Both Nan and Jennifer are FAA Designated Pilot Examiners and fulfill critical roles in today’s air transportation environment. Their success in and out of the cockpit has been recognized by organizations across the United States and their passion has inspired aviators from all socio and economic backgrounds to pursue their dreams. Additional event details, including registration and sponsorship information, can be found on Facebook @OKWIAADay. Get tickets at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/oklahoma-women-in-aviation-aerospace-day-luncheon-2018-tickets-49218217012.

The mission of the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission is to promote aviation, which includes ensuring that the needs of commerce and communities across the state are met by the state’s 108 publicly owned airports that comprise the Oklahoma Airport System, and helping ensure the viability of the state’s aerospace industry. Aviation Industry Facts: The Oklahoma Aviation & Aerospace Industry produces just under $44B in annual economic activity, making it the second largest economic engine in our state. Three segments account for the $44B total: Military aviation, $19.3B; off-airport aviation and aerospace businesses, $13.9B; and the 108 commercial and general aviation airports, $10.6B. Aviation & Aerospace supports 206,000 jobs totaling an $11.7B payroll. The average salary in the industry is $73,300 making it one of the highest average salaries in the state.

Herpetarium happenings: meet the new additions to the oKC zoo Yucatan box turtle hatchlings and endangered Mang Mountain pit viper join animal family The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden welcomes five new Yucatan box turtle hatchlings and a female Mang Mountain pit viper to the Herpetarium, the Zoo’s reptile and amphibian habitat. Only discovered in 1989, Mang Mountain pit vipers are incredibly rare, among the largest vipers in the world, and masters of disguise. The species’ brown and green coloring makes the perfect camouflage for moving around the forest; even their eyes are skillfully hidden almost to the point of being indistinguishable from the rest of their body. The venomous species has a unique adaptation for hunting prey: caudal luring. The last four inches of the Mang Mountain pit viper’s tail is completely white and it mimics a worm by wiggling its tail, luring prey to within its striking range. The species, native to the Hunan province in east central China, is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which estimates approximately 500 individuals remain in the wild. During his tenure at San Diego Zoo, Oklahoma City Zoo Deputy Director Barry Downer was the first to oversee a Mang Mountain pit viper breeding program in the United States. “In 2003, we successfully incubated 8 eggs

and worked with a German institution to increase genetic diversity by exchanging hatched animals,” said Downer. “Found on a single mountain in China, Mang Mountain pit vipers remain relatively mysterious to the animal science community. I’m glad to have the chance to continue to contribute to the understanding of this animal and that Zoo guests can discover this remarkable species.” Five Yucatan box turtle hatchlings (two arrived in July, three in August) are currently viewable in the Herpetarium’s “Nur-SSS-ery”. Turtles are the most endangered group of vertebrates in the world, with populations across the globe declining as a result of harvesting by humans for pet and food markets. Yucatan box turtles are native to a small area of the Yucatan Peninsula with total population numbers thought to be less than 10,000. That number decreases every year due to habitat loss and illegal collection for the pet trade worldwide. The Yucatan box turtle hatchlings are unique in their pale coloration compared to other box turtle species, allowing them to better blend with vegetation that is in their natural habitat. Like the hatchlings, adult Yucatan box turtles are a lighter color than other box turtle species; often being pale/ light tan with shades of yellow. The adults are kept

off public view due to their shy nature. In addition to caring for and breeding endangered turtles and tortoises, the OKC Zoo partners with the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) to conserve turtles. TSA works in 15 countries, leading conservation efforts that include enforcing laws that protect turtles, rehabilitating and releasing turtles confiscated from traffickers, and breeding and releasing endangered turtle species. Slither, crawl, walk or run to the Herpetarium at the OKC Zoo to see what’s new! Located at the crossroads of I-44 and I-35, the Zoo is a proud member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the American Alliance of Museums, Oklahoma City’s Adventure District and an Adventure Road partner. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-11 and seniors ages 65 and over. Children two and under are admitted free. Stay up-to-date with the Zoo on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and by visiting Our Stories. Zoo fans can support the OKC Zoo by becoming Oklahoma Zoological Society members at ZOOfriends. org or in-person at the Zoo! To learn more about these and other happenings, call (405) 424-3344 or visit okczoo.org.

‘STRANGER SCIENCE’ COMES TO SCIENCE MUSEUM OKLAHOMA, OCTOBER 19 Christmas lights, waffles and the supernatural will take center stage at Science Museum Oklahoma during “SMO 21: Stranger Science” from 6:30-10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, an adults-only (21+) night at the museum located at 2020 Remington Place in Oklahoma City. Guests will have the chance to interact with amphibians, try SMO’s version of telekinesis, explore carnivorous plants, get slimy with ectoplasm, make LED Christmas light pendants, learn about black holes and wormholes in the newly updated Kirkpatrick Planetarium, see live science demonstrations, and much more. “We’re traveling back to a time of classic video games and scary movies, when everything including hair was big, and even colossal pop songs could be a little thrilling — a time before social media. It will be a fun flashback to the mid-1980s when the supernatural could be anywhere and there was a conspiracy behind every corner,” said Clint Stone, vice president of programs for SMO. The full museum will be open during SMO 21, giving guests the opportunity to check out permanent exhibits like CurioCity, Big Game Theory and Light Minded. In addition to themed activities, the museum’s café will be open with a cash bar, themed drinks and numerous entrée and snack options. “The museum’s upgraded Kirkpatrick Planetarium will have just opened, and this is a great opportunity for guests to get a planetarium experience unlike any they’ve had before. It’s a night not to be missed,” Stone added. Tickets for SMO 21 are $21 in advance, $25 on the day of the event and are available online, in person during regular museum hours as well as over the phone. Tickets include all activities and access to the entire museum. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance as admission is limited. Those purchasing tickets at the door should check SMO’s website for updates regarding ticket availability and arrive no later than 7:30 p.m. There will be no ticket sales after 7:30 p.m. and no outside food or beverage is permitted. SMO 21, the museum’s adults-only, after-hours program for ages 21 and up, is a chance for adults to explore SMO without children in tow. The program kicked off in spring 2018. Additional SMO 21 events — with themes to be announced — are set for Feb. 1, April 26 and June 7, 2019. For more information about SMO 21 or to purchase tickets, visit www.sciencemuseumok.org/smo21 or call 405-602-3760.

1. In theaters this weekend is the comedy “Night School” rated PG-13 and

Five ways

to have fun this weekend

starring Kevin Hart as a man who loses his job and is forced to attend night school to get his GED under the guidance of a no-nonsense teacher (Tiffany Haddish); “Monsters and Men” rated R about the aftermath of a police killing of a black man, told through the eyes of the bystander who filmed the act, an African-American police officer and a high-school baseball phenom inspired to take a stand; and the animated family friendly comedy “Smallfoot” about Migo (Channing Tatum), a yeti, who is convinced that the elusive creatures known as “humans” really do exist.

2. Friday is National Good Neighbor Day, a movement designed to get peo-

ple to know and be friendly with your neighbors. In this day and age, most people don’t interact with their neighbors like they used to, so do something different and invite a neighbor over for tea or coffee, or grill out together.

3. October is upon us, so it’s time to start decorating for Halloween! You

can do it on the cheap, too – have your kids draw spooky decorations, make your own ghosts or whatever you can think of. Pumpkin patches, haunted houses and corn mazes are starting to open as well. If it’s already gone a bit chilly outside, be sure to enjoy some hot apple cider to celebrate National Hot Mulled Cider Day on Sunday.

4. Grab Fido or Rover and take them for a walk on Sunday to start National Walk Your Dog Week off right! If you don’t own a dog, accompany a friend or volunteer to walk dogs at your local animal shelter. Did you know that 40 percent of dogs (a total of about 17 million) in the United States alone, are overweight? If you walk your dog just 30 minutes a day, you (and your dog) will meet national recommendations for heart health.

5. This time of year is great for sports fans,

Shawnee vs. Ponca City By Adam Ewing

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

The Wolves are fresh off a 23-20 overtime victory over Sand Springs last week. The win puts them at 1-0 in district play and 1-3 on the season.

news-star.com

Demetress Beavers (20)

Shawnee's receivers, Trenton Skinner and Scout Cawvey held their own blocking for Shaw's big game last Friday. Skinner had a nice run of 30 yards against Sand Springs. The forecast isn't calling for rain so expect Skinner and Cawvey to rebound and put up big numbers against Ponca City.

Shawnee's running back, Tre'Juan Shaw, was in the groove Friday, carrying the ball 36 times for 238 yards and three scores. He also punched in a two-point conversion. This was Shaw's best game of the season and has totaled 295 yards rushing and five touchdowns, despite missing the Guthrie game with a knee injury.

Defensively, the Wolves played decent in spots against the Sandites. Jaylon Orange recorded his second interception of the season with a nice one-handed snag at the goal line. With very few opportunities to sack the quarterback, Hudson Davis brought Sand Springs' quarterback to the turf on one occasion.

Due to rain, Heath Hunter only attempted two passes but managed 48 yards rushing. Even though the game against Sand Springs had less than ideal conditions and not completing a pass, Hunter ranks second in the area in passing with 493 yards and four touchdowns.

Shawnee's homecoming was postponed until this week due to weather. The ceremony will be held before the game against Ponca City. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

This week's opponent, Ponca City is still searching for their first win of the season. The Wildcats have lost their previous four games by a combined score of 92-34.

Lincoln Christian vs. Seminole By Adam Ewing

scores. His main target, Sam Brueggemann is on the receiving end of a bulk of Ricke's passes. So far this season, he's caught 14 passes for 436 yards and crossed the goal line on six occasions.

Two undefeated district foes square off when Lincoln Christian heads to Seminole to face the Chieftains.

The Chieftains haven't had many opportunities to throw the football, but Cade Hammond is working at an efficient rate. His seven touchdowns are tied for second in the coverage area. He's also thrown for 367 yards. Seminole's passing attack is spread out a little more evenly with Saybion Battles going for 199 yards and three touchdowns and Chico Baker contributing 165 yards and three scores.

adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise

This game is an early sample of what playoff football will look like in Class 3A. So far this season Seminole is rolling through the competition, outscoring the opposition 168-33. Most of the 33 points came when coach Mike Snyder put in his second team. Lincoln Christian is putting up similar numbers, beating their opponents by a combined score of 156-45. Seminole's running game is getting the job done through four games. After a 365-yard five-touchdown performance last week, the junior leads the area in rushing with 761 yards and 11 touchdowns. Lincoln Christians leading rusher, Brendyn Harris is averaging 100 yards per game and has six scores of his own. Chase Ricke leads Lincoln Christian's passing attack with 875 yards and 10

Defensively, Seminole passes the eye test. They constantly swarm to the football and gang tackle on almost every play. Lincoln Christian gets after the opposing quarterback, as they've recorded six sacks through four games. Kickoff is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in Seminole.

McLoud (2-2) at Blanchard (3-1) – 7:30 pm.

Coming off a 30-20 win over their rival Harrah, the Redskins look to hand Blanchard their second loss in a row. Damien Dye rushed for 100 yards for the first time last week and is one or two plays away from doing that each week. Quarterback Koalton Keller will throw an interception now and again, but he can drop ball in a bucket on deep throws. Brandon Hadl and Conner Cheney both had a sack last week and can really put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Kicker Roberto Valadez is an asset on special teams. He can kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs and appears to have the leg Tyler Jones strength to hit anywhere McLoud inside the 40-yard line.

Tecumseh (2-2) at Cushing (1-3) – 7:30 p.m.

There are weeks when Tecumseh looks like they can beat just about any team around, then there are times where they struggle to score points. Last week was the latter. Looking at the trend, they are due to bounce back and hang 30-plus. Their opponent this week is another tough matchup, but coach Ty Bullock and his staff will certainly have their team prepared for the task at hand.

Chandler (2-2) at Kellyville (3-1) – 7 p.m.

The Lions ran up against the Jones buzzsaw last week, losing 39-0. This week's opponent is a team very similar in approach. Both teams really like to run the football. This game comes down to who plays more fundamentally sound football and doesn't turn the ball over.

Prague (3-1) at Henryetta (1-3) – 7:30 p.m.

The Red Devils are rolling behind Brayden McGinnis and his power running attack. Last week the senior carried the ball 53 times and went for 335 yards and three touchdowns. The passing game continues to struggle, but when the running back can carry the load and do it successfully with that volume of carries, Prague Boyce will continue to be a tough team to beat.

Micah - Tecumseh

Maud (2-2) at Wilson (4-0) – 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers started out the season on fire. They have since cooled off, dropping two straight games to very good teams. This week is no different as they face an undefeated Wilson squad that will put points on the board in a hurry. Maud starting quarterback Lane Brooks currently ranks third in the area with 486 yards passing and six touchdowns. He will have to increase his efficiency if the Tigers want to keep pace with their opponent this week.

OBU recognizes this week the Coaches to Cure MD program with OBU coaches wearing the Coach to Cure MD patch on their shirts and hosting the Dedmon family, which includes Karsen, who will be celebrating his 16th birthday. Karsen is battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy and will be presented a game ball after the first quarter. Coach to Cure has set up a fundraising website, www.CoachtToCureMD.org, with a text message option of texting CURE to 50555 to donate $10. Over the last 10 years, Coach to Cure MD has raised over $2 million. Bison quarterback Preston Haire is averaging 245.5 yards passing per game and leads the Great American Conference with 110 completed passes through four games. The Bison have allowed three sacks in its four games this season after allowing Harding to get to Preston Haire twice. True freshman Tyler Stuever leads the Bison with 58.5 yards rushing per game after a 96-yard outing at Harding last week. He averages 4.3 yards per carry. The Bison average 101 yards on the ground per game. No one not named Isaiah Mallory has rushed for 100 yards in a game since the end of the 2015 season. Hayden Ashley, who doubles as a decathlete in the spring, averages 40.7 yards per punt, has put nine balls inside the 20-yard line and has four punts of 50 or more yards. His average was hurt last week when a punt hit an OBU coverage man downfield and
