OKLAHOMA Native Royalty Thank you very much for participating in our 2 nd Annual Oklahoma Native Royalty Magazine. My name is Christina Walker and I am a member of the Sac & Fox Nation in Oklahoma. This year has been a very fun road trip; I’ve met so many princesses and recognized so many past princesses. This is a true blessing for me and my family to meet people at different Pow Wows. My goal next year is to take more trips to area Pow Wows, so plan to have your pictures taken. Thank you again it has been an honor to serve you. Keep your eye open for our next “Our Native Traditions” Magazine coming out in August-September 2017.

Joyce Nevaquaya Harris

joycenharris7@yahoo.com

Comanche, Choctaw, Chickasaw & Crow

Joyce Nevaquaya Harris will tell you she has hands very much like her dad. Yes, she is the daughter of noted Comanche artist Joyce Lee ‘Doc Tate’ Nevaquaya. Doc Tate as he was known throughout the Southwest and the Art World was a self-taught artist, flutist, dancer, composer, lecturer, and Methodist Lay Minister. From Apache, Oklahoma, Doc Tate performed locally as well as distinguished venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He won numerous awards throughout his career and his sons carried on with the flute and painting. Attending Tribal Dances and Pow-wows, Joyce finds her imagination and inspiration listening to the songs and watching the dancers and people. She receives encouragement from her brothers, family, and her circle of friends. Like her dad, Joyce is self-taught and a lot of her paintings start without a sketch. The only daughter of Doc Tate to paint, she is thankful for the encouragement from all her brothers and sisters. Joyce likes to let her hand flow when painting and says it is unexplainable sometimes. She often thinks of her dad and before she knows it, she has been paining for hours. Early on, brother Tim Nevaquaya encouraged her to ‘just paint’ which still helps her today to express freely. Joyce likes the use of colors and at the same time paints subjects, designs, and even mixes the two. She is honored when asked to paint a person and strives to show the heart of those individuals. Joyce finds it hard to promote herself, but with her own style she is continuing to pick up more and more followers of her work. She may have the name and touch of her father’s hand, but her painting is all her own. Joyce and husband R.G. make their home in Anadarko where R.G. coaches and works at the Riverside Indian School. They have had 33 years of a successful marriage. The times they enjoy most are with family, especially the grandchildren. They travel the region to attend pow-wows and gatherings and when time allows further across the country.

Chuy Cavazos Chuy Cavazos is the Owner/Photographer of Sim mah nahskits photography. He was born and raised in Santa Maria, moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma in October 1998 with his wife Mandy Fixico of 28 years and four sons. Chuy has been doing photography since the age of 13 when his father bought him his first camera a Canon T-50, which he still has and uses periodically. Chuy loves photographing Pow Wows, he feels by sharing his photos that he is taking the Pow Wow to the one that cannot make it or has never been to one. Chuy says that he is capturing moments of today for tomorrow. Sim mah nahskits means “beautiful” in Chuy’s wife’s native language. Chuy is also the recipient of the 2014 photojournalist award from Three Sands ABATE of Oklahoma.
