COLLABORATIONS

Smoke and Dust

A collaborative study of dance movements and its impacts on the surrounding that are invisible to audiences. Power and dust create clouds of smoke scattered and projected based on the direction of forces applied. An interesting study to see the unseen and experience movement and dance in a different way. Project was self initiated to aid our studies on dance for the themed project of a Dance Institution, final year project of the 3rd year at Singapore Polytechnic. SDA Building by Shawn Koh

A C A D E M I C

Category Recreational & Civic (Conceptual) Country Singapore, Singapore Year of Completion 2012 Client Singapore Dance Association (SDA) Size N/A Description Part of a collaboration with the Singapore Dance Association, a building in the heart of the CBD would be constructed as a learning hub, studio space and exhibition arena for the institution. The main exhibition space designed as ramps circulating up the various levels allowing scenic views of the city and space to exhibit photos and works by students. The facade made of pivoting metal screens allows for a naturally ventilated space. The design replicated the uniformity in dance, all seamlessly angled in a single direction and dependent on each other to create a whole system. The building features a resource library with a full range of materials on dance and the arts, and a dance theatre with fully retractable seats for a more flexible space.

COLLABORATIONS

ROLEX LEARNING CENTER by SANNA Architects

A collaborative case study focused on the construction technique and use of materials to achieve complex forms in architecture. Use of undulating forms and perforations by Japanese architectural firm, SANNA. Model was made from two pieces of foam boards carved and shaved to achieve the undulating forms. LEDs added to illustrate the lightness of the building through the use of multiple thin columns and extensive curtain of glass wrapped around the edges. Completed in 13 days. MERRI CREEK CROSSING by Shawn Koh

A C A D E M I C

Category Recreational & Civic (Conceptual) Country Melbourne, Australia Year of Completion 2015 Client Friends of Merri-Creek Size N/A Description A project based on the application of parametric design and computation. By imputing various parameters into a series of algorithms, designs were produced to conform to the site, structural capabilities, design intent as well as build-ability. This project was aided by the ‘Grasshopper’ plug-in to Rhinoceros as well as 3D printing technology. The project was intended as a crossing that bridges the two sides of the river Yarra that also encourages other activities such as rock climbing, street art as well as social gatherings. Constructed with reinforced concrete, this crossing would not only solve the graffiti problem in the area, but also improve the permeability of the area allow ease in navigation. The concrete canvas under the bridge to encourage street art and collaboration with other activities.

CONCEPT

A C A D E M I C

Category Mixed-use Development (Conceptual) Country Melbourne, Australia Year of Completion 2015 Client Yoga Association Australia National Association of the Visual Arts (NAVA) Size N/A Description Infrastructure grows uncontrollably as cities expand and its economy grows, but what is neglected are social spaces where people can gather and commute pass. City blocks begin to turn into massive, endless blocks of unwelcoming commercial facades and shop fronts.

MASSING STRATEGY

MAXIMIZE THE SITE AREA, RAISING THE MASSING.

What then can be introduced into a typical Melbourne city block? What else could a building’s program become and how could it relate to the public? A new typology of mixed use buildings made for the community, to share resources and limit wasted spaces. Mixed in functions but united by its users. A new and more sustainable way of building spaces by sharing.

SET BACK LOWER LEVELS TO CREATE NEW PUBLIC SPACE.

SLOPED GLASS ENCOURAGES VISUAL INTERACTION OF INSIDE AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

SKIN DESIGN

TRUNK GROWTH PATTERNS IN FORREST AREAS CREATES SHADE AND OPACITY.

TAKING THE NEGATIVES OUT TO CREATE OPENINGS TO SHADE AND PROVIDE PRIVACY WHERE ITS NEEDED.

FACADE WRAPS AROUND THE EAST AND WEST FACES PROVIDES PRIVACY, PROTECTION FROM SUN AND NOISE REDUCTION.

FACADE TO PROVIDE SHADING AND NOISE REDUCTION WHEN NEEDED.
