los angeles state historic park, 2014 “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” [Elliot Erwitt]

accomplishments + involvement

My three years of exploring the realm of landscape architecture has enabled me to think critically, unlocking multiple perspectives bound for creative exploration and a desire to push the limits of reality and possibility. I am seeking an internship that will contribute to my growth as a designer and enable me to continue to ambitiously immerse myself into the curious realm that is landscape architecture.

manifesto

T

his portfolio depicts the consolidated form of my creative development over the course of my academic career as a landscape architecture student. Through carefully selected works, this collection entails an emphasis in topics that have peaked my interest. Quite the contrary to practical and common practices in the profession, these projects are what have shaped my thought process and the way my eyes perceive the world. All in all, this portfolio best represents my narrative and who I am as a designer and a problem solver.

2 This project uses the great divide formed by the Los Angeles River to enhance the existing connection of the neighborhoods west and east of the 1st St Bridge. Currently, there are several connectors that take people across the river, but it undermines the river itself by not providing any access into the channel. The Los Avian Cycleway provides an opportunity for people to travel through the channel, and also acts as a catalyst for a greater connection.

The supporting infrastructure of the cycleway also demonstrates a form of animal architecture. It enables opportunistic species to thrive in the urban setting by providing just enough gap for habitation. By intersecting people and wildlife, emerges new opportunities for a complex relationship. The cycleway is a necessary addition to the existing system of bike paths within the context because it not only benefits people by providing a safe transportation route, but also considers the other urban dwellers of the city.

infrastructure for cohabitation Often times, when the word “urban is mentioned, a universal image of incredibly dense environments such as Los Angeles conjures in ones mind. These images however, are primarily focused on the people and their habitation in cities. What we forget is that prior to habitation by humans, other species existed in the exact same location. That being said, urbanism not only refers to man’s adaptation to the conditions of the city life; however,

it also brings up the notion of how these wild animals have adapted to both the human presence and a drastic change in setting. This is cohabitation in the urban city. The Los Avian Cycleway provides opportunity for both human and avian users to interact in the Los Angeles River. This harmonious relationship exemplify cohabitation which permeates across all urban environments.

revelatory sensescape Current day, the sunset strip’s mandate is to overwhelm the senses. The users are thrown into a preplanned experience rather than being given the opportunity to pave their own. The status quo of the strip is the result of West Hollywood’s primary agenda to generate revenue through advertisements on billboards and tall walls.

These light sources create the ambiance of the strip but also a visual blur that causes people to bypass the memorable nuances of the area.

mappings The succeeding mappings illustrate the “pulse of the city, referring to the liveliness and animation. Through the two mappings, it becomes clear that the street camouflages behind a street weighed down with steadyflowing traffic during the day. By night, the pace picks up, revealing its nocturnal energy.

These series of mappings entail subjective data and first-hand experience of the sunset strip. The initial map reveals the mosaic of the strip. In addition, it portrays which parts are more welcoming to the public through its transparent materiality.

existing conditions The most obvious identifiable feature on Sunset Boulevard is the series of billboards and tall walls. These light sources along with the bars and music set the unique ambiance of the strip; however because the advertisements are primarily directed towards cars and not pedestrians, it creates a visual blur for the users. With that notion, this project extracts the unique ambiance of the strip and choreographs it in a less overwhelming way for the users to enjoy.

the story of the storyteller Photographs reveal subtle qualities in moments that one would otherwise not be able to capture. The lens of a camera acts as a third eye engaging the photographer in a whole new realm of perception. Therefore, photography is the perfect tool for narrating an unparalleled story untold by none other. Most importantly, photography communicates the story of the storyteller.
