E.P.I.C. ECHOES FROM SHAW BE ARS

“Shaw University is excellent because of its legacy that many Americans supported. Shaw’s existence is an affirmation of its mission and commitment to creating an environment where students can succeed.” J O R D AN G AL L O W AY | CLASS O F 2 0 1 6 CHEM IS T RY

Under the leadership of President Tashni-Ann Dubroy, Shaw University and our community of scholars are looking to transform the definition of the word ‘epic.’ Our campus, with more than 150 years of history as an institution of higher learning and social transformation for the City of Raleigh and beyond, visualizes the word as a mantra for living and creating for others an environment of excellence. We work everyday within our academic, athletic and social spaces to help our students actualize their potential as leaders. Shaw’s business is evolution, as we push our traditions in the liberal arts and social advocacy into the 21st century with an eye for technology, entrepreneurship and sustainability framed within the idea of continuing access for the underserved. Our development strategies are aimed at building a culture of learning through the acquisition of state-of-the-art resources and examples of professional achievement, to help all students become industrial experts with growing compassion for how their work impacts the lives of others. As trends in higher education continue to change, Shaw University is taking its cues from its entrepreneurial president who believes in fiscal conservatism, industrial creativity, and collaborative development between corporation and community. In just one year, Shaw has reversed persistent declines in enrollment, philanthropic support and personnel management with record-breaking gains in all three areas. The university has received commendations for exceeding standards of accreditation and audit compliance, strategic realignment of academic programs and resources, and increased support for faculty compensation and sponsored research. A 2013 economic impact study conducted by the Cooperating Raleigh College organization revealed that Shaw students, faculty, staff and alumni contributed $133 million to Wake County’s collective $8 billion generated by the city’s six colleges and universities. Three years later, Shaw continues to position the campus as the premier industrial asset for Raleigh’s growing and future needs in technology, mass media, criminal justice, secondary education, civil service and divinity. Members of Raleigh’s corporate community have eagerly embraced Dr. Dubroy’s development model, and have invested more than $500,000 in Shaw programs and initiatives over the last year. Shaw listens, works smartly and with budget restraint, and boldly pairs yesterday’s traditions with the demands of the 21st century.

And we are just getting started.

As a child, I always knew I was put on this earth to do something phenomenal. I was born into a family where hard work was a norm and everything was possible. Both my parents were entrepreneurs, who frequently shared that there were no limits on success, and that every new idea was another opportunity to be great and do well. On a daily basis, my siblings and I were affirmed by our parents who told us we could become whatever we wanted to be. Those affirmations would be the catalyst that fueled my educational and professional journey from student, to corporate analyst, to entrepreneur to college professor and now, as president of the illustrious Shaw University. I don’t take this presidential appointment lightly. It is a job I believe was divinely ordered for me and I won’t take it for granted. And even in this short time, the journey can only be described as amazing. We have worked hard to achieve exponential growth in virtually every sector of the institution’s metrics. From increased enrollment to record-breaking fundraising, enhanced alumni engagement to successful corporate partnerships; our message of innovative thinking, strategic spending and big dreaming has resonated with a diverse section of our community. Shaw University is well positioned become the top producer of highly skilled professionals who will meet the demands of a global workplace. Every day, we’re building new relationships, creating new concepts and developing strategies to implement best practices that will elevate this institution as a premiere provider of a quality education in North Carolina and the southeast. With the community’s support of our institutional strengths, and investing in the areas where we demonstrate high capacity, I am convinced that together, we will build Shaw as an international leader in industrial preparation and support for our city and state, our great nation, and the world. Just Imagine the endless possibilities! Tashni Ann-Dubroy President

Downtown dwellers have complained about late-night noise from bars and restaurants, and the City Council last year approved new rules in an effort to create a quieter environment. City Noise, which Morgan created in his software engineering class, provides data using off-the-shelf technology and a wireless sensor network to measure noise levels.

For his work, Dr. Butler received the Triangle Business Journal’s 2016 BDO Life Sciences Award for Outstanding Research by a University. Shaw was among 17 finalists recognized.

Established a new Student Success Unit to include oversight of disability, career, internship, writing, retention and engagement services.

We want our students to have accessible information on how to find money for tuition, how to secure work or internships in their desired careers, how to find clubs and organizations which can offer them personal enrichment, and how to receive counseling support for times when the most need it. Student success is institutional success. Conducted full assessments of CAPE academic offerings and site locations to increase optimization of service delivery costs, community need, industrial pairing opportunities. We analyze how we can provide better, widerreaching learning opportunities for all citizens of North Carolina. We will specifically look at how our centers can work more closely with corporations and industries throughout the state, and how they can become community resources for job training and skill development.
