Feature, Form, Function Analysis
Form This product has a laterally streamlined design from front to back with protruding feature knobs, and switches, a good design for tactile use in visually compromised situations, such as are in emergencies. A color demarcation also aids functionality during the day time.

WeatherX WF 308
Feature, Form, Function Analysis
Function It basically performs the necessary functions of an emergency device, providing light, time and weather information. Its varied power options i.e Dynamo, AC Adapter, and Batteries multiplies its utility. Its dual LED light options can be alternated in use depending on the users needs. It also has a clear and high volume in built speaker. Use of the hand crank feature can be tedious and ineffective, though. As a 5 minute crank gives out only 25minutes of high volume radio time.

Human Factors
This buttons of this radio are raised and can be easily found in the dark. Its handle is just a little uncomfortable The crank design fails because it’s handle is too small and narrow, doesn’t lock into position when being used, and feels brittle.

Scenarios

Scenario One
Jack Stevens in the Sahara Desert Stefan Steiger is on vacation, climbing the Swiss Alps alone. He’s almost reached its summit, and is thinking of setting up camp. He needs to recharge his cell phone and find out what the weather is going to be like through the night. He reaches for his emergency radio and tunes to the weather station. Connecting his cell phone to the radio, he leaves it outside his tent to charge by solar power, while it in turn charges his cell phone. When night falls, he uses the radio’s lamp to plot his climbing strategy for the following morning.
Jack Stevens is a 31year old reporter for the travel and adventure column of a local newspaper in Savannah Georgia. He is currently hiking through the Sahara Desert with a team of 5 in Central Africa. A trip which will take them 5 days. They consistently need to maintain location statistics, because they are liable to be confused by the ever changing sand dunes. Their primary physiological need is cold water, and cool air. Steven attaches a water filtration and cooling accessory to his emergency radio, leaving it out in the sun to capture it’s rays for solar power. He keeps his eye on the GPS indicator on the radio’s LCD display.

Scenario Three
Juan + Sarah in the Amazon
Juan Sanchez, a National Geographic Photographer is in the amazon forest with his wife and fellow adventurer Sarah. They are rowing through a tributary of the amazon river when they notice that their boat has a leak. They set up camp not too far from the river bank were their boat was compromised. Juan pulls out the radio which has a GPS locator and transponder. He sends a distress signal to the local forestry reserve base. They wouldn’t be able send out a rescue party until the next morning, so Juan and Sarah have to spend the night where they are at. They check the weather stations for possible inclement weather, and later on switch to Shortwave for entertainment. Sarah wants to finish the book she’s been reading all day long, so she uses the radio’s torch for illumination

How do you find the overall handling of the product? It's large and awkward because of the spring loaded dynamo inside it I guess.
What don't you like about this product? It has an AC adapter outlet but no batteries which is pretty frustrating... I have to crank it ever so often for it to work.
How would you change this product if you had an opportunity to? If there was anything I could add to this product, it will be a battery compartment.
Have you ever used it outdoors? How did it fair? I have used it outdoors, and found it delightful to use because it has a solar panel.
How many times do you use it in a year? I use it only once a year, when the power goes out.
Which bands do you have on this radio? It has weather bands as well as FM and AM radio stations.

Kayak floated away when the tide came up. 4. After a 10 mile hike my friends and i got to our rock climbing location. while climbing a large rock was knocked loose, and landed on my friends foot breaking it. we had to carry him down the mountain. 5. I was snow boarding and I broke my femur. 6. The mast fell down in the middle of a sailing class I was instructing. There were five small children on board. I had to wait until a boat got close enough to hail down.
Do you have a radio?
What needs do you have on your outdoor expeditions that aren't met?
52%
Yes
1. Knowing where I am and where I've been so I can backtrack or have some sort of sense of direction/facts about where I am to help me find my way back and stay informed about what's going on. For example, knowing when the sun will go down or if rain is incoming would be helpful, but I'd like to know that on the fly rather than listen for the info on a radio. 2. Water purification

6. I would probably take a radio w/ me, BUT when fishing and hiking I need something small and compact and lightweight. When Trail running Im never more than 20 minutes from a car (usually closer), so I don’t know that I would carry one with me. When Skiing, I suppose something like that would come in handy. 7. I should really have more emergency things, but i need them to be very small
Have you ever taken a radio with you on your expeditions?
Yes No
20% 80%
If yes, can you elaborate on how useful it is when you have it with you. 1.Good for weather and if an emergency happens its good to be able to call someone. 2. I used my radio as music while I snow skied, I hope I never get in a dangerous situation and need it. It would be nice to have a more main stream survival or emergency station. 3. It is extremely useful to have a radio when it seems that a storm is approaching while on the water. The radio is even more useful when there is danger, a collision, or injury on the water. 4. I have an Eton Emergency Radio with hand crank and lights.
8. I would like to have internet access, but I would just need to get a smart phone probably. 9. All of my expedition needs are met. 10. Solar power, signaling, maybe small storage for matches and first aid 11. Compact, water resistent or proof, floats and alternate power - winding, solar or both.
