CELEBRATING 25 YEARS: STILL TURNING THINGS AROUND!

2 2018 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference
WELCOME I can hardly believe that we are celebrating the 25th year of Black Church Leadership and Family Conference. I have been coming to this mountain since before my children, Candace and Mark Jr., were born. They grew up coming here every year. They made friends in the preschool program that are still in their lives today. I came here first as a seminary student, then as a new pastor, then as a new father. I have come to this place during years full of celebration and in years full of sorrow. I celebrated as this conference gave me my first opportunity on a national stage. It was as we drove from BCLFC in Glorieta, New Mexico to Albuquerque that my first wife Karen felt the pain that let her know her cancer had returned, and it was another year here at Ridgecrest we knew it would likely be her last time in this place. I came here with my new wife, Brenda, just two weeks before we were married. Here is one thing I know. God has made His powerful presence known to me each time I have come to this conference. Each experience here has refreshed me and reminded me of God’s Promise, Purpose, Power, and Passion. That is why we have chosen Isaiah 45:22 as our theme verse for this 25th year. It says: “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is no other.” This is a reminder to us that times may be turbulent, but God is still God all by himself! We are God’s disciples. He has promised ultimate success. He does not sleep. He is not weary. Indeed He is Still Turning Things Around! If you are an old friend or new, welcome! I am so excited that you are here so we can celebrate together! As we gather in the mountains this week, I believe God has something amazing in store for each of us. We have prayed and planned inspirational, informative, insightful, involving, and invigorating experiences for you this week. It is our hope that you will leave this conference rested, refreshed, re-energized, revived, and ready to step up your game back home in the places and tasks to which God has called you. Happy 25th Anniversary from the Crostons!

4 2018 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference
A BRIEF
BCLFC HISTORY
Black Church Leadership and Family Conference was originally known as Black Church Week. We started in 1993 as a place where leaders of black churches could receive training from all of the Southern Baptist Convention’s key national entities: LifeWay Christian Resources, International Mission Board, North American Mission Board, GuideStone Financial Resources, and Woman’s Missionary Union. The event was one of a summer full of special training weeks sponsored by LifeWay at the Ridgecrest and Glorieta Conference Centers. Today, Black Church Leadership and Family Conference is experiencing record attendance in this 25th year.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 5 Conversations to Have With Your Daughter Kim Coleman Johnson Springs 1 B Part 1: Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Tuesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m Your daughter’s growing up. The world has a lot to say to her, and she’s starting to listen. Even if she doesn’t quite know it, she needs you more than ever. It’s time for you to press in and tell her some things she might not know (or might have forgotten) about who she is in God’s eyes. Just five conversations, but they could be the basis for a whole new way of relating to your daughter. TRACK: Discipleship/ Transformation 5 Conversations to Have With Your Son Fred Luter Johnson Springs 1 D Part 1: Wednesday: 9:30-10:50 a.m. Part 2: Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Fully addressing the dynamic social and spiritual issues and other influencers at hand, this study will be as much a part of the boyhood
journey as those Lego’s you’re still finding under the sofa cushions and the garage full of sports equipment. This study helps moms and dads pinpoint and prepare the discussions that should be ongoing in a boy’s formative years. TRACK: Men’s Ministry 5 Shifts to Transform Your Ministry Darron Edwards Johnson Springs 1 C Part 1: Tuesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Part 2: Wednesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Explore five micro-shifts that have the potential to produce macrochanges in your church. You will discover how to integrate these micro-shifts into the life of your church, starting with the way you disciple. You will finish by developing a plan to structure, communicate, and evaluate these changes to ensure that they take root and pave the way for lasting change and kingdom impact. TRACK: Discipleship/The Process
28 2018 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference
#Church Too: Developing Policies & Procedures to Protect the Most Vulnerable in Your Congregation Jessica Henderson Dogwood 2 D Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. In the wake of the #MeToo movement and revelations about the Roman Catholic Church’s cover-up of rampant child sexual abuse, the church is waking up to the realities of the brokenness within its structures and leadership. Learn what policies and procedures your church can implement to prevent sexual abuse within your congregation and comply with the law. TRACK: Church Law & Security A Fish Called Mercy Breonus Mitchell Johnson Springs 1 F Part 1: Tuesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Part 2: Wednesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. An expository journey through the small prophetic book of Jonah, as God encourages us to experience the mercy of God even in the most demeaning and difficult places. This place in your life is not for your
demise. It is just a place in which God provides a detour. TRACK: Leadership A Beautiful Design Kathryn Freeman Johnson Springs 5 A&C Part 1: Thursday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Despite our culture’s many-faceted ideas and designs about gender, there is only one design that truly matters and takes precedent: God’s. At the heart of the Christian faith is the belief that God created all things and that He is good. This tells us that God has a design for us, including our gender. In this study, we will seek to uncover and submit to, in Scripture, God’s design for men and women. TRACK: Contemporary Issues Act Like Men Jerome Coleman Johnson Springs 1 D Part 1: Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Wednesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. In many ways, our culture paints an unsavory and unseemly picture of manhood. The standard for how a man acts and conducts himself continues to be lowered. While some might see men’s roles as insignificant, God tells a different story. God says that men matter, and He’s appointed them to lead. Men fulfilling this role is vital to the health of our homes, churches, and society. TRACK: Men’s Ministry
Among Wolves Jerome Coleman Johnson Springs 1 B Thursday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. How do we turn passive participants into active disciplemakers in an ever-changing urban context? Among Wolves seeks to help us move to obedience to the call of Christ to labor among wolves. You will walk through eight significant movements in the book of Matthew, beginning with Jesus establishing His presence with us, to Him mobilizing an army to go and make disciples of all nations. As we follow Jesus’ patterns and teachings in Matthew, you will be equipped to establish a thriving disciple-making culture in your context as your burden to see your city reached moves toward reality. TRACK: Discipleship/ Transformation And Lead Us Not Into Dysfunction Michael Friday Johnson Springs 3 B&D Part 1: Wednesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Thursday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Too many churches (including some, blissfully unaware of it) are being led into dysfunction. This course involves: (1) an exposition of some common attitudes and behaviors that lead church organizations into dysfunction; (2) an examination of congregations’ four organizational “frames”; (3) an exploration of the best leadership and organizational dynamics practices that lead to strong congregational health, and the kind of leaders required for effective congregational life. TRACK: Authors
Associate Ministers Moving Forward Ernest Reid Dogwood 1 A Part 1: Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Get help with some clear steps and practical insights that will help you to both support your pastor and get you ready to lead in the ministry God has for you. TRACK: Pastor/Preacher Bearing Fruit: What Happens When God’s People Grow Madeline Harris Johnson Springs 1 C Thursday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Friday (repeat) 8:00–9:20 a.m. Bearing Fruit walks us through the life of the Christian. Biblical, intentional, and practical, Bearing Fruit points our hearts to the gracious God who called us, justified us, and is now sanctifying us by the work of his Holy Spirit. TRACK: Discipleship/The Process Becoming a DiscipleMaking Church Chris Surratt Johnson Spring 1 C Tuesday: 8:00–9:30 a.m. We are called to make disciples who make disciples. Becoming a Welcoming Church Victor Davis Mt. Laurel 5 Tuesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Wednesday (repeat) 9:30–10:50 a.m. Church guests often felt like they crashed a private party. Here is a game plan for churches to become more hospitable through a practical framework for making a difference for those who visit their church. TRACK: Service Be Made Whole Valerie Carter Rhododendron 2 B Wednesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Friday (repeat) 8:00–9:20 a.m. She works three weeks to pay the rent and has to beg for food for her family. Poverty. Poverty plagues women around the world and in our own communities. In this session, we will explore ministries that uplift women and encourage the church to engage in ministries towards spiritual, economic, and physical wholeness. TRACK: Women’s Mission
Bible Studies for Life: The Dark Side Eric Beckham Johnson Springs 1 E Part 1: Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Tuesday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Evil is no illusion, and while it can certainly reside in the hearts of people, such evil is most clearly seen in the one who seeks to inspire it: Satan. Whenever we engage in spiritual battle, whether our struggle is with demons, the paranormal, or fear, we need to pray and express our faith in the One with all the power. Only prayer moves us from relying on our own strengths (which are actually weaknesses) to trusting the allpowerful God. He provides us with spiritual armor and a battle plan because He desires to set us free. God has the power to do so, and Satan has already been defeated. TRACK: Bible Big Results from Evangelism Through Your Sunday School Michael Pigg Johnson Springs 1 G Thursday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Other ways may grow your church numerically, but Sunday School is still one of the best ways to grow your church both numerically and spiritually. Big Results: Teaching Preschoolers & Children Brenda Croston Johnson Springs 4 A&C Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. The purpose of Big Results: Sunday School and Black Church life is to provide the basics of Sunday School organization and practice for churches serving the black community. This is an attempt to answer the question, “What can we do in our Sunday School to maximize our impact for the spiritual growth and development of our children?” TRACK: Kids/Youth Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life Elizabeth Luter Dogwood 1 B&C Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Boundaries gives a biblical foundation and practical tools for helping others respect your boundaries—whether you are not responding to a text message immediately or saying no when someone asks you to volunteer for one more activity. Discover firsthand how good boundaries give you the freedom to live as the loving, generous, fulfilled person God created you to be. TRACK: Women’s Ministry Casting Nets For a Catch Claude King Mt. Laurel 4 Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Our culture is being shaken to its very foundations. In times like these, people begin searching for
security, stability, and hope. God is preparing us for a spiritual harvest, and He may well be announcing to us: “‘At an acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’ See, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation!” It’s time for us to start casting nets for a spiritual catch. Come learn how. TRACK: Renewal Christ Above Culture Sherard Burns Dogwood 2 A Part 1: Tuesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. Part 2: Wednesday: 8:00–9:20 a.m. The gospel is a call to living above our culture. Much of what is happening in the country challenges believers in being distinctly Christian in a culture of racial division. Learn a significant method to overcoming these divisions for His glory. TRACK: Ministry Outreach Church Education Leaders’ Roundtable Beverly Sonnier and Eugene McCormick Johnson Springs 1 G Thursday: 9:30–10:50 a.m. Here is a chance for Ministers of Education, Sunday School Directors, Pastors, and other leaders to talk with the experts. TRACK: Seminary Level Deacons as Leaders James Chester Mt. What personal qualities should a candidate for deacon possess? What does the ministry entail? What relationship should exist between the pastor and deacons?
