Typology: Temporary structure

The Soviet Union collapsed almost 27 years ago but still, that huge social experiment is yet to be forgotten for those who lived through it. Through comprehension and analysis of their present-day purpose, there appeared to be a need for a deeper understanding of the conditions they were designed in and the ones they currently exist. As the communist ideology was deeply keen towards modernist architecture it’s cities became their (almost) perfect embodiment. Even though architecturally they were quite monochromatic after 1991 postmodernism flooded the region. The process is best described in “The Condition of Postmodernity. An Enquiry into the Origins of Cultural Change by David Harvey. As it is referred to in Part I, the modernists saw space as something to be shaped for social purposes and therefore always subservient to the construction of a social project, the postmodernists see space as something independent and autonomous, to be shaped according to aesthetic aims and principles which have nothing neces-

sarily to do with any overarching social objective. The urbanist irony of public spaces in Ukraine is that they were designed as a part of modernist communist cities and yet now they exist in the postmodern reality. So in order to be able to work with those spaces, one has to keep in mind its particularity. The main issues that this research is working with are linked to the everyday activities of the habitats of the city Poltava. Specifically, it proposes to look at the way these people spend their leisure and free time in the public realm. The program will be divided into two parts: shortterm intervention and long-term strategy. Eventually, through these actions, it is expected to find an answer to the questions of the post-soviet urban realm. What is the post-soviet space capable of? Can it wake us up from that reality of the constant spectacle that we live in? And most importantly what happens after the curtain drops?

RE-integration gardens

Studio: You will not get my hate Professor: Alfred Jacoby Location: Bataclan square, Paris (France) Typology: Landscape

2016

In a world that lives in a certain order, rules, rituals, what happens when you fall out of this system? Where do you seek help? And most importantly, are you still allowed to be a part of this system? The project suggests creating a community garden that serves as a temporary shelter and reintegration center for those wanting to come back to the system. It follows an idea of creating a learning and communicating platform that anyone can have access to. Specifically, the project focuses on helping homeless people of Paris. *** Rather than existing in a binary opposition, public and private spaces operate at a variety of scales that overlap and intersect, creating a mosaic of spaces and degrees of access. Rarely is a space either public or private, but is instead multi-layered and often disputed physically and politically. In this case it has united both personal\public, free\commercial, entertainment\relaxation. The community center offers different programs and classes for homeless people of Paris in order to help them reintegrate back. They can learn business skills by growing and selling food in the gardens, by picking up craftsmanship classes in the under-level.
