Welcome Welcome to the second Camberley International Festival programme! This year sees an even bigger selection of music, comedy, dance, literature, film, drama and food across Camberley for 10 glorious days and nights this June. We are once again delighted to have the BAFTA award-winning actress Juliet Aubrey as our patron. Juliet will also be part of the judging panel for this year’s newly-introduced short film competition. ‘I am so happy that the Camberley International Festival is returning, packed with even more delights this summer. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing some of the talented film-makers and animators as part of the competition I will be helping to judge.’ The finalists and winners will be shown at Camberley Theatre on 15 June. Camberley Theatre will play host to ticketed events by awardwinning artists, along with free to attend parties and the town centre will be buzzing with free entertainment during the day and night of Saturday 10 June. We’re thrilled to welcome The Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band to Camberley - they will perform several times on Park Street during the afternoon on 10 June. ‘Z Cars’ Party Camberley Theatre Wednesday 7 June 7pm (Free Event)
This promises to be a very special evening! The party is co-hosted by Ian Cullen, who played DC Joe Skinner in the iconic BBC series from 1969-75. ‘Pieces’, an episode from 1973, will be shown in the main auditorium and followed by a Q&A session with Ian and other ‘Z Cars’ cast and crew. Bernard Holley (PC Newcombe 1967–71), actress and author, Tara Ward (widow of Ray Lonnen - DS Moffat 1972-77), Margot Hayhoe (production assistant on ‘Z Cars’ and producer of ‘Waking the Dead’ and ‘Silent Witness’) and Ann Davies ( ‘Z Cars’ ‘Dr Who’ actress and widow of Richard Briers). Each guest will receive a complimentary glass of Prosecco or soft drink on arrival and there will be live music in the bar from Dean Dyson, who sings classics from the likes of James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Don McLean. 8 – 8:30pm Sophie and the Giants - Creating haunting indie dreams, this Guildford four piece are sonically wise beyond their years. 8:45 – 9:30pm Annabel Allum - Recently returned from this year’s SXSW Festival in Texas. Annabel released her debut single ‘Tricks’ in July 2016, has received multiple spot plays on BBC Radio 6 Music and has gained a host of fantastic reviews from the online music world. 10 – 11pm BlackWaters - Indie-Punk from Guildford. BlackWaters play the Download Festival on the same line up as Biffy Clyro the day after their C.I.F. gig. They will also be supporting The Libertines in August. Saturday 10 June The Carpenters Arms 12:30 – 10:00pm (Free Event) 2:45 – 3:15pm Brightr - Acoustic music that blends beauty and rage. 3:30 – 4:15pm The Gentle Good - The Gentle Good is the stage name of Gareth Bonello, a singer-songwriter and folk musician from Cardiff, who sings in both Welsh and English. The Gentle Good’s live session on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show last year was chosen by Mark as one of his favourites in his end of year show. 4:45 – 5:30pm Joe Waller - Wonderful song writer from Aldershot who combines beautifully crafted lyrics with a unique, soft and gentle tone. Joe will be playing as part of a three piece band for this show - expect dance beats along with emotional vocals. 6 – 6:45pm The Sheratones - Matching up razor sharp riffs, melodic vocals and rhythmic grooves to create a sound reminiscent of the best of British rock and pop from the 50’s to the present. 7:15 – 8pm Kodiak Island - Local psych-folk band who released their debut album ‘The Golden Section’ last year. 9 – 10pm Martin Stephenson and the Daintees - We are so honoured to have Martin Stephenson and the Daintees headlining this intimate gig. Their debut album, ‘Boat To Bolivia’ was released on Kitchenware Records in 1986 to huge acclaim; appearances on the BBC’s ‘Whistle Test’ and Glastonbury followed. The band released three further albums before calling it a day in 1992. Luckily for us, they have reformed and we’re thrilled to welcome them to Camberley.

12:30 Joe England ‘D.I.Y. Fanzines’ - Local man, Joe England will be reading from and talking about his role in the fanzine scene. His literary fanzine ‘PUSH’, featuring previously unpublished working class writers and poets, spans over 20 issues. Joe then went on to put out his own West Ham fanzine during the last season at Upton Park, called ‘5MANAGERS’. That magazine and two anthologies of PUSH have now been published in book form by East London Press.

The C.I.F. is incredibly lucky to have John Williams, Cardiff novelist and founder of the Laugharne Weekend in Wales, to curate this new literature section of the festival. John will be interviewing and hosting Q&A sessions with these fabulous authors: 1pm Daniel Rachel - Daniel Rachel’s book ‘Walls Come Tumbling Down’ is an exhaustive account of the Rock Against Racism, 2 Tone and Red Wedge movements. In April it won the Penderyn Music Book Prize. 2pm James Brown - Ex ‘NME’ and ‘Loaded’ journalist talking about his book on Five A Side football ‘Above Head Height’ 3pm Travis Elborough - Travis Elborough is the author of four acclaimed books, and regularly appears on Radio 4. His new book ‘A Walk In The Park’ has been described as ‘A fascinating, informative, revelatory book’ by William Boyd in The Guardian. Parks are such a familiar part of everyday life. You might be forgiven for thinking they have always been there – and that they always will. Hosted by Ben Hinzman (AKA ‘been jam-min’) 4pm Dave Randall - Dave’s book, ‘Sound System’ is a book of raves, riots and revolution. Dave Randall (guitarist with Faithless, Sinead O’Connor and Dido) looks at examples from Beethoven to Beyoncé and poses the question: how can we make music serve the interests of the many, rather than the few? 6 – 8pm Open Mic. - Drop Ben a line if you would like to play as part of this open mic section. Only for soloists or duos, 2-3 songs maximum. ben.hinzman@gmail.com The Best of the Bristol Math-Rock Scene 8:30 – 9:30pm Chiyoda Ku - A fresh, aspiring trio and one of the best instrumental acts in the UK. 10 – 11pm Steve Strong - A one man arsenal of beats, tapped guitar and lush, textural melodies. Steve played an awesome #CIFLive for us in January. Now’s your chance to see him play in the flesh - and be blown away.

When Amy finds a letter, lost and forgotten under her floorboards, she starts a chain of events that changes three lives forever. Through separate stories of love, loss and loneliness, we hear from Amy, struggling with grief, Emma, struggling to keep her marriage together, and Evelyn, struggling to find love. Oysterband Sunday 11 June 7:30pm £20 (Main Auditorium) 40th Celebration Special. Classic songs from every era of a long and mighty career. Oysterband make modern, folk-based British music, acoustic at heart. Since 1978 they’ve toured in 35 countries, won 5 BBC Folk Awards and made 13 studio albums. Oysterband still play with that spirit of the punk ceilidh band that roared through people’s lives all those years ago. But the growing depth and sensitivity of their songwriting, coupled with the strength of John Jones’ voice and their remarkable musicianship, have lifted their music into a richer, more acoustic era. Comedy – ‘Graeme of Thrones’ Camberley Theatre Tuesday 13 June 7:30pm £19.50 In this critically-acclaimed theatrical journey through the Seven Kingdoms, avid ‘Thrones’ fan Graeme just wants to recreate his favourite fantasy saga on stage. He doesn’t quite have the same budget as the TV show, or as many cast members, or the performance skills required, but he’s sure George RR Martin would approve – and that’s what matters. Having started life in London’s West End, the show has since been seen around the world with sold out shows in Australia, Canada and the USA. See it before the inevitable lawsuit. Frames Party Camberley Theatre Thursday 15 June 7pm (Free Event)
As the C.I.F. nears its finale, this free party is co-hosted by Frames, the animation collective. There will be live music in the bar from Jack Francis and his band, with complimentary Prosecco or soft drinks on arrival. There will also be a couple of virtual reality games for you to try! The ten short listed entries in the C.I.F. short film competition will be shown on the cinema screen in the main auditorium, then, the winners will be announced by BAFTA Award winning actress and C.I.F. patron, Juliet Aubrey. Juliet, along with Polly Nash, course leader at the University of the Arts in London and James Hill, Director at Fudge Animation, are the judging panel. Surrey Heath Museum Exhibition - Take Ten (Free Event)
Throughout C.I.F. period (Wednesday to Saturday) 11am – 5:00pm The rich culture make-up of our area is the inspiration behind this exhibition which features 10 people who have made Surrey Heath their home. Some people have lived here all their lives, others have moved here from elsewhere. We look at where they grew up, what attracted them to this area, and why Surrey Heath has become their permanent home. A chance to celebrate the diversities and similarities within our borough.
Saturday 17 June Farmers’ & Artisan Market
Organised by our friends at Collectively Camberley From 10am until 3pm Park Street in Camberley hosts the monthly market with a huge variety of street food, crafts and traditional local farmers’ produce. It’s a great place to try before you buy and get to know exactly where your food comes from. With everything from freshly baked breads, fish caught that day and bacon farmed less than 20 miles from the town centre. There’s also a great range of fresh street food including sweet and savoury crepes, paella and Thai food!
Camberley Carnival - Drop In
We are so happy to be reintroducing the Camberley Carnival! The Carnival, which will help to mark 140 years since Camberley got its name, will feature a colourful parade through the town centre before finishing at London Road Recreation Ground where a range of family activities and entertainment will be on offer throughout the afternoon. As this will be the grand finale of the Camberley International Festival, the theme will be ‘Around The World’. There will be a drop in arts and craft workshop at Camberley Theatre from 10 – 11:30am, for last minute creations to take on the procession. With food, a licensed bar and entertainment including, ‘Carnival of Games’ – a marquee packed full of retro computer games including Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, Atari, Playstation 2, Giant Gameboys and many more. The Big Art – Children’s art workshops. Creating the famous Camberley white elephant and decorating it to become full of colour! Plus the Farnborough Concert Band of the Royal British Legion and various displays.
