Les Misérables

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway
Directed by Dustin Hoffman, this comedy centres on a home for gifted musicians. Every year retired opera singers Cissy, Wilf, and Reg present a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday. The much anticipated film adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation is here! Set against the backdrop of 19thcentury France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption. Silly Songs of Shakespeare Silly Songs of Shakespeare is a show that does what it says on the tin: there are songs, they are silly and they are based on Shakespeare. Spend an evening with ‘Fearg & The Sonnettes’ while they serenade you with hilarious “synopsongs” of some of Will’s most famous works and illuminate a weird corner of Shakespeare’s world with their witty and catchy tunes.
QUIZ NIGHT
The fun and informal quiz is back with the Quiz Master and evening’s compere, Rory McAllister from BBC Radio Berkshire.
This joyfully daft exploration of the Bard works on several levels. The gags are fast-fire and the songs (sometimes actually by Will himself) are witty: but it’s also hugely enjoyable musically. The Sonnettes can really, really sing and their comic timing is every bit as sharp as their singing.
Included in the price is a delicious fish and chip supper from local restaurant, Jacks. There is a vegetarian option too, just inform the box office when booking. It’s a great way to spend the evening with family and friends. Teams must have no more than six members and the closing date for entry is Wednesday 10 April.

When Isaac Williams set off to catch his usual bus, little did he realise that he'd meet the most important people of his life... quickly falling for kind-hearted Sophie, he finds himself fighting for her affection with rival suitor Chris. It's not until Sophie's feisty friend Zoe shows up though that it becomes apparent that, ultimately, everyone is playing 'Love Games'. Purple Dreams Productions are back with their 'Next Stage' Tour, kicking off with this saucy comedy offering you plenty of love, lust with laughter and lies.
After years of incredible success writing pop songs for stars such as Cliff Richard (Livin’ Doll), Marty Wilde and Tommy Steele (Little White Bull) Lionel Bart turned his talents to musical theatre producing Lock Up Your Daughters and Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’ be in 1959. But it was his 1960 smash hit Oliver! that made him internationally famous and established the British musical as a force to be reckoned with after decades of American dominance in the genre. Winning 9 Tony awards on Broadway and 6 Oscars for the film version Oliver! has been revived no less than five times over the years. With Bart’s trademark witty lyrics, and moving, toe tapping songs the show has never lost its appeal. Generations of children and their parents continue to be enthralled by this wonderful story of one boy’s hope and courage in the face of adversity. Memorable songs include Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, As Long As He Needs Me, Where Is Love?, You Gotta Pick A Pocket Or Two, Oom Pah Pah and many, many more.

The book is in three sections, and opens with a sequence of war poems, ‘Laurels and Donkeys’, which draws on soldiers’ experiences from the First and Second World Wars, through to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also reads from ‘The Cinder Path’ (Faber), shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. Andrew will also answer questions from the audience about his writing and follow his talk with a book signing. ‘Motion’s greatest and most distinctive gift... is to look squarely at the world and describe it with a plain and unsentimental eloquence that makes world value seem all the more questionable.’ Independent on Sunday

Writing Workshop with Ben Galley
Murray Rowlands Innocents Into War
At last year’s festival, Ben Galley’s writing workshop was very popular, so we are delighted that he has agreed to run another. Ben is certainly a writer to watch out for. His fantasy novels The Written and Pale Kings have met with much praise and he is busy on his next book.
Every year the Surrey Heath Book Festival likes to shine a spotlight on local writing talent. New Zealand born Surrey Heath resident Murray Rowlands has published a very personal story set against the wartime backdrop of Passchendale. To this day very little is known about New Zealand’s contribution towards World War I and Innocents Into War sets to redress the balance. The story follows two of Murray’s relatives who in 1916 join the army, leave their home in New Zealand for the most harrowing journey of their lives. It is the story of ordinary people flung into the most extraordinary of circumstances. Based on family letters and stories handed down to him by his Great Uncle, Murray has written a moving story of family, love and great courage.
During the workshop Ben will share his ‘tricks of the trade’ and give advice about self-publishing. Suitable for over 16s only.

(abridged) (revised) An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was London’s longest running comedy, ten years in the West End! And now the RSC boys are back with the same recycled jokes, just put in a different order. Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies in one wild ride that will leave you breathless and helpless with laughter.
The star of BBC’s ‘Cool It’ and ITV’s ‘Cool Head’ in the early 90s, Phil Cool, has announced his retirement after forty years in show business. Are You Experienced?
The Bootleg Shadows
Are You Experienced? Starring John Campbell is widely accepted as the top tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
The Bootleg Shadows perform a unique concert that encompasses the Shadows’ amazing career from 1960 up until the early 80s. Concert audiences are invited to relive fantastic hits such as Apache, Foot Tapper, Man of Mystery, Atlantis, Wonderful Land, Kon Tiki, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, FBI plus many, many more.
The onstage resemblance between John Campbell and his hero Hendrix is uncanny. With showmanship that harks back to Hendrix’s late 60’s performances, even the most ardent fan would be impressed. So impressed were the organisers of The Isle Of Wight Festival, John Campbell and band were invited to open the 2010 event marking 40 years since Jimi Hendrix performed his last major appearance there. A clear testament to the authenticity and musicianship of Are You Experienced?
For anyone who loves the sounds of the 60’s - and enjoys a few laughs on the way – ‘The Bootleg Shadows’ perform a unique tribute that has audiences humming the tunes and doing the Shadows famous ‘walk’ long after they have left the theatre.
The release of the new Hendrix album, People, Hell and Angels will bring the music to a new generation of fans, and Are You Experienced? Are the next best thing!
