Camberley A progress update on the major regeneration projects going on across the town
High Street Plans
Camberley town centre’s extensive regeneration programme is fully underway. Several developments are now active sites and others are at various key points – including finalising designs and securing developer partners. We were very proud to announce last month that Camberley has been shortlisted for a prestigious Revo Gold Regenerate Award. These awards are part of a national scheme that recognise and
celebrate the very best examples of development, investment and asset management in the retail property and placemaking sector. The Regenerate Award recognises Local Authorities redefining placemaking excellence. The winner will be announced in December. Councillor Moira Gibson, Leader, SHBC said: “We are committed to Camberley town centre and driving forward positive change and developments that support the town and its economic prosperity. This recognition from Revo is a great endorsement for our

regeneration schemes.” Karen Whelan, SHBC CEO said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Camberley has been shortlisted for this award. It is a wonderful recognition for our town and the regeneration projects.” London Road A significant stage of regenerating Camberley is investing in and improving the area along London Road (A30) between the High Street and Park Street and opposite the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. SHBC is in the process of appointing

set to shine an experienced regeneration developer with the resources and vision to deliver a comprehensive and transformational development of the 2 ha (5.5 acres) site. We are aiming to announce the successful developer next month. SHBC will work with the selected group to deliver an outstanding new mixed-use development comprising of residential, retail and car parking for this area of the town. The Square shopping centre Works are due to complete on the first phase of refurbishment works in the new year. The entire centre will be bright and fresh with new flooring, lighting, painting and facades, and a stunning new lighting feature will also be installed in Main Square.
We have welcomed Jack Wills to Camberley, who have now opened their new store in The Square. We are also very pleased that House of Fraser are keeping their Camberley store. The High Street and public realm The High Street received £3.5million in funding from Enterprise M3 LEP, which has been increased with £900k of funding from SHBC to improve the roads and pavements on this historic street. Works will start in Spring 2019. The new materials used for the road and pavement surfaces will greatly improve the pedestrian experience. New street lighting and
public art will enhance the character of this road and give a feeling of place and Camberley’s heritage. Knoll Walk and Princess Way will be transformed into attractive versatile areas to sit, relax and enjoy with family and friends. Ashwood House Ashwood House, the former office block on Pembroke Broadway in Camberley is being transformed into 116 high quality apartments by Berkeley Homes. We are aiming for the properties to be completed and on the market in Spring 2020. • We thank everyone for their support and patience as we bring you an improved Camberley.

business
Networking over breakfast
More than 100 local business people came to the latest SHBC Business Breakfast event at Camberley Theatre in September
They joined Councillors and council officers to network, exhibit, and listen to a ‘Question Time’-style panel debate on the subject of Camberley town centre. The panel consisted of Cllr Moira Gibson, Leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, Deputy Leader Cllr Richard Brooks, SHBC Chief Executive Karen Whelan, SHBC Executive Head of Finance Kelvin Menon and Founding Director of the Community Matters Partnership Project, Tracy Jarvis. Tracy Jarvis gave an engaging and informative presentation outlining the history and positive effects of the Community Matters Partnership Project (CMPP), which has been running for seven years. CMPP is a self-funded project
that enables local businesses to support key social issues in their local communities. Karen Whelan and SHBC Executive Head of Regulatory Jenny Rickard also presented on the subject of Camberley’s regeneration. The panel members then discussed issues surrounding Camberley town centre, including current projects, transport links, and future plans, while also taking questions from delegates. A new video showcasing the regeneration work in the town and highlighting SHBC’s vision for Camberley was also shown

Remembrance Surrey Heath paid tribute in Remembrance events across the Borough
Surrey Heath marked the centenary of the end WWI by paying their respects during Remembrance Sunday services on 11 November. The Mayor of Surrey Heath Cllr Dan Adams joined the morning service at St John the Baptist Church, Windlesham, before attending St Michael’s Church, Camberley, together with SHBC Chief Executive Karen Whelan. They then joined dignitaries, local military and community groups in a parade along the A30 London Road, before wreaths were laid at the War Memorial outside the RMA entrance. Deputy Mayor Cllr Robin Perry attended The Square Shopping Centre in Camberley to mark the two minutes’ silence, and joined the afternoon service at St Lawrence’s Church, Chobham. The Square shopping centre featured a beautiful display of poppies to mark Remembrance Day.
They expressed their gratitude that the Mayor was to mark Herbert’s sacrifice, and that of all Surrey Heath’s fallen soldiers, through this poignant visit.
Mayoral visit
The Mayor of Surrey Heath marked the centenary of the end of World War I by laying a wreath on the grave of a Surrey Heath soldier in Northern France. On 11 November the Mayor and Mayoress travelled to Lapugnoy Military Cemetery near Bethune to lay a wreath at the grave of Herbert Benjamin Daborn from Chobham. This name was chosen at random from a list provided by Surrey Heath Museum. Private Daborn, 23, died from wounds sustained in battle on 25 September 1915. Before his trip, Cllr Adams managed to locate and meet some of Herbert’s surviving relatives.
Thanks to Surrey Heath Museum staff and volunteers whose research helped made this trip possible.
‘There But Not There’ To mark this year’s Remembrance, two ‘There But Not There’ soldier silhouettes were installed either side of the entrance to St Michael’s Church, Camberley. The silhouettes will be relocated permanently to the clear glass panels inside the front door entrance, adjacent to the St George’s stones. These SHBC-funded silhouettes are in addition to those the Council installed over the summer outside the entrance to the RMAS on the A30.

recycling
Recycle your tree for free The popular scheme is back again this year in Surrey Heath Following the success of the scheme over the past two years, residents can recycle their real Christmas tree for free in 2019 as part of a Council-run scheme – and help maintain the Borough’s parks at the same time. Between 5-19 January 2019, we’ll
be running 15 drop off sites across Surrey Heath where residents can drive in and leave their ‘real’ Christmas tree in a designated area.
Last year, more than 800 trees were recycled via the scheme, which helped restock paths in Frimley Lodge Park.
At the end of this period, the trees will be chipped and the resulting wood chippings will be used to replenish paths in our parks.
Surrey Heath Places and Strategy Portfolio Holder Cllr Craig Fennell said: “This popular scheme has several benefits, for residents, our parks and the environment in general, and I encourage people to use it once the festive period comes to an end.”

Park, Walk, play! Car parks, play areas and walks are all getting a makeover
Main Square Car Park
Walk This Way
Parking Services have been busy improving Main Square multi-storey car park in Camberley.
SHBC has joined forces with Dogs Trust and Keep Britain Tidy in a new dog walking route initiative.
The whole car park has now been fully resurfaced – we hope you have noticed the improvement. Key changes: • Making all standard parking bays 2.6m wide, an extra 20cm. • Relocating all the disabled bays to The Square side of the car park to improve access for Blue Badge Holders.
Improved play areas
• Relocating the car wash to Level 2, making it easier to find, but also to free up parking spaces nearest the lift
Evergreen Road play area, Frimley, is the latest playground to be refurbished as part of SHBC’s £650k improvement programme.
Work to replace the fluorescent tube lighting with brighter, more energy efficient LED lighting is also taking place, along with stairwell refurbishment.
Children can now enjoy the new junior multi-play unit, a variety of swings, 4-way see saw, rope swing, surf rider, and trampoline. There’s new safety surfacing throughout, along with more seats and picnic benches.
Don’t forget there are 3m wide bays on Level 4, and electric charging bays on Level 1.
Thanks to everyone who responded to our consultation about the new play areas planned for Green Flag Award-winning Frimley Lodge Park and Lightwater Country Park. We received almost 1,000 responses, which were used to produce plans for potential designs. Public feedback on those plans will help make the decision on the final design. Work on both play areas should start early in the new year.

Frimley Lodge Park and Chobham Water Meadows are part of an extension to Walk This Way (WTW), a successful pilot programme by Dogs Trust and Keep Britain Tidy which reduced the amount of dog waste left in public spaces. The programme makes over popular dog walking routes, adding more bins and clear signage. Frimley Lodge Park’s two WTW routes include a 2km and 4km walk. Both start opposite the entrance to the 3G pitch. The Chobham Water Meadows 6km route starts at the High Street car park (behind Chobham Rider shop). www.surreyheath.gov.uk/ walkthisway

Put your eye health first says Specsavers People in Camberley have been encouraged to make their eye health a priority following a national awareness week that drives home the importance of regular sight tests. And there was a group in particular that Specsavers put the spot light on during National Eye Health Week - older working adults. The facts According to official statistics, over 190,000 people over 65 are working across South East England, with an additional 64,000 expected to be doing so by 2030 as people live longer and healthier lives. Sadly, many people are neglecting their eye health. Research from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) suggests that up to one in four of us are not having our eyes tested at least every two years.
Camberley optician shares his concerns
mature customer is more susceptible to sight loss from glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts yet these conditions are easier to manage when they are detected early, and sight loss can even be prevented in some cases. “There are currently almost 100,000 people in Surrey living with conditions which can cause preventable sight loss.”
So what can you do to reduce your risk of losing your sight? Lateef says: “Regular eye tests are so important for everyone, regardless of age. One exciting innovation which features at our store to help us get a really good picture of eye health is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This technology is normally found in hospital eye departments so it’s great to be able to offer it to our customers, right here in Camberley. It uses 3D scanning technology to view the eye in more detail than ever before.”
Store director, Lateef Iqbal from Specsavers in Camberley comments on this worrying statistic: “The more

constituency boundaries, that the Windlesham area will move to the Windsor constituency.
We will be writing to affected households before the May 2019 Borough elections.
The recommendations are dependent upon a Parliamentary vote. If agreed by Parliament this will only affect which MP Windlesham elects - not where Windlesham residents vote or the councillors representing the Windlesham area.
Poll cards will be sent to all registered electors in April next year as usual with full details of where and when to vote.
Could you be a councillor? Do you want to represent the views of people in your local area and make a difference?

Friday Night Project – volunteers wanted The Friday Night Project is a youth club for 11-18 year olds, offering discounted access to facilities at the Arena Leisure Centre between 6.30-8pm. To make this opportunity more accessible to a wider audience, minibuses offer return transport from the Old Dean estate to the Arena.
Recent SHBC intern Tara
Since 2017, SHBC has recruited undergraduates to work on real projects for the Council during their study breaks via our Summer Internship programme. Designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience within a Local Authority, the placements can last between four weeks through to three months. Open to undergraduates and graduates, interns will typically gain experience in Information Technology, Transformation, Media & Marketing and Business. Recent intern Tara said: The past two summers I have worked in economic development, investment and development, event planning, PR, and even been involved in the
Town Centre’s promo videos. It’s been an amazing experience overall and really useful.” Stuart, also a previous SHBC intern, added: “As an English Literature student, working in the IT department was an eye-opening experience for me, and incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the chance to get to grips with something far removed from my typical ‘comfort zone’ and ultimately make my skill set more well-rounded and wide-ranging.” • Interested in applying for a 2019 Summer Internship? Closing date for applications 31 January 2019, interviews February - April 2019. Go to www.surreyheath.gov. uk/internships
We are looking for volunteers to support with driving minibuses. In exchange, volunteers will receive training and a qualification free of charge, which could also lead to casual employment opportunities. To find out more about attending the Friday Night Project or volunteering to support the group, please email business.services@ surreyheath.gov.uk. highways
Improved roads and transport An update on the latest projects from Surrey County Council Meadows roundabout update You will have noticed there is a reduction in waiting times to travel around The Meadows roundabout, despite the major roadworks. That’s because we’re using one of the most advanced temporary traffic signal systems to help keep you moving. It’s also the first major highway scheme in Surrey that is primarily being constructed at night to minimise disruption to traffic during the day. Works are progressing to schedule and, provided that there is no adverse weather, they are expected to be completed in May 2019. For regular updates, and to sign up for our e-newsletter, visit www.A331.today Surrey Heath Local Committee The Surrey Heath Local Committee, made up of SCC
and SHBC Councillors, ensures that traffic and transport services continue to meet the needs of residents, businesses and visitors. Local highway decisions such as the introduction of road crossings are the responsibility of the local committee but are implemented by SCC, which manages the county’s roads. Committee Chairman Cllr Bill Chapman said: “It is exciting times for the Borough as SCC is improving major transport infrastructure such as the Meadows. “We have resurfaced the A30 in front of the Royal Military Academy entrance. Next on the list, subject to funding approval, are improvements to the A30 and local bus services.” “These improvements will make it easier to travel to and from Camberley by all modes of transport and contribute to creating

a more prosperous economic and commercial town centre.” The ‘To do list’ The Blackwater Valley Quality Bus Corridor scheme plans to improve public transport and enhance links between key towns in Surrey and neighbouring Hampshire. The project aims to increase passenger numbers by improving bus reliability, journey times, waiting facilities and access to bus timetable information. Camberley town centre improvements consist of a range of different projects along the A30 corridor. Schemes currently undergoing detailed assessment (by Enterprise M3 LEP) include road and junction improvements around the London Road Development and changing the junction between the A30 London Road and Frimley Road to improve access for buses and traffic flow.
