You might notice a strong outdoors theme to this edition of Heathscene. The reason for the abundance is probably down to the fact that spring is here and in Surrey Heath we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activities and the great outdoors.

camberley judo club

Camberley Judo Club Olympic chances

With just over 100 days until the opening ceremony, members of Camberley Judo Club are entering the final phases of qualification for the Rio Olympic Games. Building on the success of London 2012, where Karina Bryant won a fantastic bronze medal, and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games which saw Ashley Mckenzie, Danny Williams and Owen Livesey all win gold medals, the club has the chance of qualifying six athletes for Rio. As well as the three Commonwealth champions, in addition Nathon Burns, Frazer Chamberlain and Szandra Szogedi (representing Ghana) have a chance to book a place at the Games. With the level of judo constantly on the rise for the last 18 months, the players and head coach Luke Preston

have been on a constant world tour, competing on all continents to win valuable qualification points. The last few months of the qualification time remain and will prove vital if these athletes can achieve their dreams. Highlights so far have seen Nathon, Danny, Owen, Frazer and Szandra all win gold at Continental Open tournaments whilst Ashley has achieved a career best Grand Slam silver. This has been made possible through the generous support of sponsors and club fundraising which has enabled the athletes to travel to the events needed to gain points. Proud coach Luke Preston said “This is truly an exciting time for the elite athletes at the club and

8 I Heathscene I www.camberleyjudo.co.uk

the whole club in general. We’ve had a fantastic last five years and hope to continue this success in 2016 and beyond. Qualification is far from over but we are confident the players can deliver the performances needed to book their place at the Games. I’d like to add a huge thank you to Surrey Heath and all the supporters and sponsors of the club.”

council

Public services ‘one-stop shop’

Surrey Heath Borough Council has successfully implemented a comprehensive public services co-location project at its headquarters, offering users a ’one stop shop’. This has encouraged joined-up working between partners, while achieving significant savings. The changes, offering ‘more for less’, have achieved improved outcomes for users in terms of efficiency and results, and are being replicated by other local authorities and partners. Over recent years a wide range of public services have moved into the council offices, including the Police, adult social care, registrars and the NHS, culminating more

recently with Jobcentre Plus moving into the multi-use Surrey Heath House building, situated in Knoll Road, Camberley. This relocation of public services and the multi-use of the offices contributes towards the council’s goal to make Surrey Heath House (SHH) a ‘Civic Hub’. The frontline Jobcentre Plus services relocated in November

10 I Heathscene I www.surreyheath.gov.uk

2015 from their previous site in nearby London Road, Camberley. Jobcentre Plus District Manager, John Bowdery, said: “The move is designed to help ensure we will continue to deliver an efficient public service in Surrey Heath alongside our partners in local government. “We will consider all opportunities to make similar enhancements with local government partners to offer

council combined Government services from one building. “This model in Camberley has helped and will continue to help with future planning activity in other locations.” Sharing the SHH offices means both the council and Jobcentre Plus will make efficiencies - in line with the other partner organisations already sited in the building. The move is expected to save the council £250,000 a year from the cost of running the offices. By sharing the premises, the public services not only benefit from efficiency savings but closer collaborative working too. Civic Hub The range of services operating from one building makes it easier for residents to access the services they need in one place.

Around half of SHH is currently used by local public services other than the council, compared to five years ago when the whole building was solely used by the council. Surrey Police Neighbourhood Team moved in to the offices during 2011 as part of the force’s ongoing change programme. This was followed in the same year by that of Surrey Heath NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), and Surrey County Council Adult Social Care arrived in 2012. The Register Office followed in 2014. Closer working partnerships Dr Andy Brooks, Chief Officer of the highly-rated NHS Surrey Heath CCG, said: “We chose to base the CCG at Surrey Heath House so that staff from health, community care and social care could work together to improve

the care services and outcomes for local people. It has given us all the chance to get to know each other and understand the cultures of our organisations, which benefits local people.” The CCG ranks in the top 10 CCGs in England in 4 out of 5 NHS Outcome Domains - a testament to effective local partnership working across health and social care. For all these public services, relocating has brought savings at a time when more efficient ways of delivering services is essential. Surrey Heath Borough Council’s Chief Executive Karen Whelan said: “These are tough times financially. The cuts to public services means there is a new landscape for change and innovation - we are determined to continue to deliver high quality efficient services to our residents.”

recycling

Keep it separate!

Recycle Right

Make sure you are putting the correct materials into the right bin. All clothes and home textiles can be recycled, even tights, underwear and accessories. It doesn’t matter if they’re torn or tatty as long as they are clean and dry. Clothes are either sorted to be worn again in the UK or abroad, or recycled into useful products like felt, insulation or stuffing.

Recently, we have found a number of residents have been putting bags of mixed waste in their recycling bins. These bags often contain general household waste, food and non-recyclable items such as nappies, polystyrene, paint, timber and also textiles and electrical items.

in the green wheelie bin loose. This is so collection crews can easily identify bins that cannot be emptied due to unacceptable content.

It is important that these items do not go into the green recycling bin as there is a risk that this will spoil the good recycling. This year we have seen an increase in rejected loads at the recycling plant.

• Food waste must not be put in the recycling wheelie bin. Please use the small food waste caddy provided.

• Put recycling in your bin loose. • Textiles and electrical items must not be put in your recycling bin.

To make sure your textiles are reused or recycled, please ensure that items are; clean & dry (please bag) kept separate (do not put in recycling bin) carrier bag sized quantities (due to limited space on collection vehicle) Find out more www.surreyheath.gov.uk/ textiles

Surrey Heath Faith Lunch and Peace Vigil The Surrey Heath Faith Forum organised a faith lunch during Interfaith Week at High Cross Church, Camberley; everyone enjoyed the ‘bring and share’ lunch followed by discussions on how the faith communities could serve the residents of Surrey Heath. Everyone agreed there was a need to show unity amongst the faiths, especially after the recent Paris attack. From this discussion, the Surrey Heath Faith Forum held a ‘Peace Vigil’ outside Surrey Heath House two weeks on from the attack. Faith representatives from all the different faiths shared a reading about ‘peace’ from their scriptures and ended by saying ‘we commit to peace’. The vigil was concluded with a minute’s silence to commemorate the victims, their families and all those suffering due to terrorism throughout the world.

community

Youngsters More than 400 Surrey Heath year 7 pupils from Kings International College, Collingwood College and Carwarden House Community School have taken part in practical sessions to broaden their personal, peer and community responsibility skills. The Young Citizen scheme held in November helps young people to understand how their behaviour can impact on others. The scheme is designed to give youngsters the knowledge and skills to lead safe, healthy lives, as well as being a responsible and considerate citizen. A range of workshop sessions were provided by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey Police and

St John Ambulance; with topics comprising road and fire safety, personal safety and first aid skills. In addition, Solomon Theatre Company performed their play called ‘Last Orders’, about alcohol abuse and its consequences, followed by a workshop discussion. Solomon also delivered a Cyber Safety workshop covering the social and legal aspects of internet use and its potential danger.

Young Citizen is an annual event organised by the Safer Surrey Heath Partnership and Surrey Heath Learning Partnership.

Chobham Water Meadows Originally in private ownership, Chobham Water Meadows has recently been purchased by Surrey Heath Borough Council as a SANGS site.

SANGS stands for Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace. They are simply existing green spaces that will undergo enhancements to make them more attractive to visitors. The idea is this should then, in turn, help reduce the visitor pressure on vulnerable heathland areas such as Chobham Common.

The council aims to improve facilities for visitors by putting in pathways, seats and installing litter and dog waste bins. Nature conservation is also an important consideration and traditional practices such as cutting

the meadows for hay will continue. This purchase will ensure that the meadows are appropriately managed for the benefit of visitors and wildlife into the future. The main entrance to the Meadows is easy to find, there’s a car park located just behind the Chobham Rider shop in the High Street. Please note although parking is free for up to two hours you will still need to get a ticket from the machine and display it on your vehicle (Monday Friday only). During the non-summer months it can be wet underfoot, so wellies or good boots are advised.

Fact file The site is a mixture of wildflower meadows divided by mature hedges of pre-dominantly Hawthorn and Blackthorn. Interspersed within the hedges are plenty of mature trees, especially

Oaks, although Willows, Ash, Hollies and other species can be found. Typical species in the wildflower meadows include Ox-eye Daisy and Common Knapweed. Running through the middle of the meadows is the River Millbourne. No more than a few metres across,

As well as starting several businesses of his own, Richard has somehow found the time to support a new business advice scheme for start up companies, run in partnership by Surrey Heath Borough Council, Surrey Chambers of Commerce, and Basepoint business centres. Under the terms of the scheme, start up, and prestart up companies can book a 90 minute one-to-one appointment to meet Richard at the Basepoint offices in Camberley. Richard will talk through all of the key aspects of starting a business, including: writing a business plan, sourcing funding or investment, developing a

An additional bonus is that the sessions are all provided FREE, sponsored financially by Surrey Heath Borough Council and the Surrey Chambers of Commerce, inside modern office space provided by Basepoint. The sessions have been running for over six months and are going from strength to strength, boosting business in Surrey Heath. Here’s what people who’ve already met with Richard had to say: “I am confident my business will grow as a result of this Business Clinic, which will contribute to the local economy and result in increased employment in the future as I expand….” “The guidance received today made the process of moving forward, less daunting and clear. I would recommend seeking Richard’s advice to anyone wanting to start a business.”

“I have come away from today’s meeting encouraged and motivated to push my venture forward.” Another fan of Richard’s approach is Surrey Heath Councillor Colin Dougan, Portfolio Holder for Transformation. He said: “Starting a business is a very exciting thing to do, but it takes a lot of hard work and planning to do it successfully. With so many things to think of it’s possible to get put off before even starting. That’s the worst thing to do. The Bransons, the Zuckerbergs, and, of course, the Sugars all followed their dream, but they would also have had their doubts at the start. I’m sure they’d have loved to have had a Richard Butcher to talk through their ideas with. Someone who’s been there and done it, who can give knowledgeable advice in a helpful and friendly way.” To pre-book your 90 minute slot for advice on developing your business, please contact Surrey Chambers of Commerce on 01483 735540, or email: richard.guillaume@surreychambers.co.uk.
