The line-up for Frimley Lodge Live!
It’s been a very busy few months here at Surrey Heath – mainly due to the elections where we were responsible for managing not one, but three separate ballots. Between Thursday 7 and Saturday 9th May our hard working elections staff oversaw the collection and collation of votes for the parliamentary, borough and parish elections. At a borough level, we welcomed 14 brand new members onto the council who are currently settling into their new roles as representatives of their local communities. Find out more on page 14-15.

Regenerated play area opens A play area in Camberley has been given a new lease of life with some great new facilities for children aged three and upwards. Comprising swings, see-saw, play frames and a multi-activity unit, the playground in Dawnay Road offers a balance of fun and healthy exercise. New softer safety surfaces have been added, together with seating areas and litter bins. Major General Stuart Skeates CBE, Commandant of the Royal Military Academy (RMA) officially opened the playground, joined by families, local ward councillors and the Mayor of Surrey Heath. The revamped area aims to serve both the military and civilian communities in and around Dawnay Road and Epsom Close, which sit on the boundary with the Royal Military Academy.
The council and the RMA worked in partnership to gain funding from the government’s Community Covenant Grant Scheme. Major General Skeates said: “I am very pleased to see the transformation of this play park and wish to thank everyone involved in its development.” Cllr Richard Brooks, Town ward councillor said: “This is a terrific improvement of the playground that can be enjoyed by children and families. Local residents have been very supportive of the project and I’d like to thank the various organisations involved in helping to deliver a fantastic play area for the community.”

This year’s screenings of The Shining, Grease, Anchor Man and Imitation Game had yet to take place when Heathscene went to print – but if last year is anything to go by, then it was sure to be another great success.

Football
legend launches new 3G pitch Surrey Heath football fans enjoyed a treat at Frimley Lodge Park with a guest appearance from ex-England international Tony Cottee at the official launch of its excellent new 3G pitch. The former West Ham United, Everton and Leicester City striker hosted the event in front of an excited audience before a penalty shootout and masterclass session with young players from Surrey Heath clubs, led by a Fulham FC coach. The Sky Sports football pundit also led a Question and Answer session and signed autographs and photos at the public event.
Built FIFA compliant as a professional playing field, the 3G pitch, funded by Surrey Heath Borough Council, was completed in early 2015. The facility’s synthetic turf, which generates a higher standard of play than a traditional all-weather pitch, offers a long artificial grass blade and rubber crumb base to more accurately reflect the roll and bounce of natural grass. The full-sized all-weather pitch is available for hire by schools and local football and rugby clubs; plus general hire during evenings, weekends and school holidays. Surrey Heath’s Executive Head of Business, Leigh Thornton, said: “The 3G pitch will provide a valuable space for the borough’s many sports teams of all ages and will help them keep fit and active, while allowing them to enjoy a premium sporting facility.” For more information on the 3G pitch’s availability and booking, email the council’s Business Services team on business.services@ surreyheath.gov.uk or phone 01276 707338.

Green
Waste Club The subscription-based Green Waste Club, run by Biffa, could be a really quick and easy way to recycle your garden waste.
Recycle old clothes and textiles In Surrey last year more than 10,000 tonnes of clothes and home textiles that could have been reused or recycled were thrown away, including shirts, coats, towels, pairs of shoes and bags. All clothes and home textiles can be recycled, even tights, underwear and accessories. It doesn’t matter if they’re torn or tatty as long as they are clean and dry. Clothes are either sorted to be worn again in the UK or abroad, or recycled into useful products like felt, insulation or stuffing.
During the summer months, garden waste collection is a great timesaver, helping you to recycle grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and other garden waste – giving you more time to spend in the garden at your leisure! Members of the Green Waste Club are provided with: • a brown wheelie bin • fortnightly collection • f acility to renew/manage subscriptions online.
In a recent survey carried out by Biffa, over 90% of Surrey Heath respondents said they were satisfied with the Green Waste Club and the reliability of the service provided. Nine out of ten also felt the club delivered valuefor-money.
To find out how to recycle clothes and home textiles, search ‘Recycle for Surrey’ online or call 01276 707100.
You can subscribe online or contact Green Waste Club staff by phone. www.surreyheath. gov.uk/green-waste-club or 0800 0858 286.

Surrey Heath Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Karen Whelan, said: “This new scheme shows that when the public and private sectors work together we can deliver really great benefits for the local community. Similar schemes in other areas have supported over 200 businesses in the past three years, and we want to see the same sort of success rate in Surrey Heath.”
The next Business Breakfast takes place at the Camberley Theatre on Friday 25 September. Organised by Surrey Heath Borough Council, these popular meetings are held twice a year and feature various guest speakers. All businesses based in Surrey Heath are invited to register and can send up to two delegates. More than 80 businesses came to the last event, making the most of the excellent networking opportunities. Exhibition space is available for all businesses at a reasonable cost, offering the chance to promote your company and raise your profile. Camberley’s Basepoint Business Centre Manager, Lisa Rollings said: “We have all sorts of businesses interested in taking office space with Basepoint. “Whether they’re already trading and just want to stop and take stock, or are thinking of moving out of their home study or kitchen and taking the plunge by getting their own office, one thing they all need is good business advice.” To sign up for a clinic or business review, contact richard. guillaume@surrey-chambers. co.uk or call 01483 735540. www.surreyheath.gov.uk/business I Heathscene I 23

Lonely?
Tea ‘n’ Chatter A new scheme has been launched to tackle isolation and loneliness among the Borough’s older residents. their friendship group. The same group attend each event, so they build relationships.” Residents can apply to join a group, or be referred by agencies such as GPs or social services. Since its launch in May, two groups have been set up already, with the eventual aim of having at least one Tea and Chatter event a month in each area of the borough.
Tea and Chatter, run by Surrey Heath Age Concern (SHAC), organises monthly small tea parties at volunteers’ homes.
For this to happen, more volunteer hosts and drivers are needed. “Anyone with a few hours to spare can contact us – hosts just need a house with a downstairs toilet and a big teapot!” said Mrs Gibson.
“They’re picked up by our volunteer drivers, who stay for the event then take them home again.
SHAC are also upgrading the facilities in their Tea Room in Camberley town centre, with Wifi broadband being installed. “Tea and Tech” sessions will be offered from September, to help older residents access the internet and use tablets and smartphones.
“For elderly people living alone, loneliness and isolation can be a problem. The Tea and Chatter event gives them something to look forward to, and also widens

Residents from Bagshot and Camberley have been awarded £3,500 towards making their homes warmer and more energy efficient, through Action Surrey’s ‘Streets Ahead’ project. Funded by the government, Streets Ahead provides grants to insulate non-cavity wall homes in Surrey. Moiya Bewsher had her Bagshot home improved with solid wall insulation and she only needed to contribute under two thirds of the cost. She said: “I was originally interested in installing solar panels, but after learning I could receive £3,500 towards insulation, it was a far better option. I look forward to feeling the benefits this winter, in addition to saving energy and helping the environment.” The ‘Streets Ahead’ team recently announced an increase in grant funding per home. Surrey’s residents can now claim a guaranteed grant of £5,000 compared to £3,500 previously. Grants must be allocated by 30 September 2015, so don’t leave it too late to register! To be eligible, you need to either own or rent a private property with non-cavity walls. Find out more on www.actionsurrey.org/ streetsahead or call 0333 014 3620.
