Now that the evenings are increasingly lighter and we head into spring, the thought of spending time outdoors becomes more appealing, especially when you live in an area like Surrey Heath. We all know that our borough is blessed with an abundance of woodland, heathland and quality managed parks but did you know that Surrey Heath is also the most tree filled borough in the whole country? See page 20 for more information. Areas that contribute greatly to the borough’s appeal are our attractive and vibrant villages such as Windlesham where we held our first Spotlight on Public Services back in November. The event gave residents living in the Windlesham Parish area, which includes Bagshot and Lightwater, a chance to speak to representatives of Surrey Heath Borough Council and its partners. We had an interesting and enjoyable evening hearing first-hand what matters to people at a very local level and judging by the feedback, the residents who attended the event also found it very useful. Find out more on page 5. Finally, as you will see from the cover, this edition of Heathscene has a very active theme to inspire you to get out and get moving - whether that’s a gentle ramble through some of our beautiful woodland (page 19), taking part in the Surrey Youth Games (page 8) or trying out our new floodlit 3G sports pitch in Frimley Lodge Park (page 4). So come on – what are you waiting for? Have a great spring!

Kick off! New 3G pitch comes to Surrey Heath! A brand new state-of-the-art 3G pitch has opened at Frimley Lodge Park. This floodlit top of the range addition to Surrey Heath’s flagship park provides a valuable space for the borough’s many sports teams of all ages. The pitch will cater for 1000s of visitors all year round, helping participants stay active and healthy whilst enjoying a premium sporting facility. Built FIFA compliant, making it a professional playing field, the pitch was completed in early 2015, enabling several months play in the run-up to the next football season. Its synthetic turf enables a higher standard of play than a traditional all-weather pitch, with a long artificial grass blade and rubber crumb base to more accurately reflect the roll and bounce of natural grass. The full-sized all-weather pitch is available for hire by schools and local football and rugby clubs; plus general hire during evenings, weekends and school holidays. For more information on availability and how to book, contact Business Services on business. services@surreyheath.gov.uk or 01276 707338.

Spotlight on Public Services: Windlesham, Lightwater and Bagshot On 26 November 2014, residents of Windlesham, Bagshot and Lightwater attended a community consultation event organised by Surrey Heath Borough Council in partnership with Surrey Heath Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS), Surrey County Council, Surrey Police and Windlesham Parish Council. At the special event, held at St John the Baptist Church in Windlesham, residents had the opportunity to find out more about the services provided in their local area as well as join discussion groups which focused on key topics such as health, planning, crime and the environment. Surrey Heath Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Karen Whelan, said: “I was delighted that so many residents from the Windlesham, Bagshot and Lightwater area attended the event and took the time
to not only understand more about their local services but to engage in topics that really matter to them”. Another Spotlight on Public Services event was held on 11 March for the residents of Bisley and West End. An article about the event will be included in the summer edition of Heathscene.

camberley town centre
Camberley Town Centre bucks national trend yet again The end of 2014 saw Camberley retaining its position as one of the area’s leading destinations for shopping, eating out and leisure. This ongoing popularity has led to a marked increase in both visitors and car park usage compared to the same period last year with a 2.7% increase year on year, comparing favourably to the
national figure which has seen an average drop of 1.1%.
Camberley is also out-performing town centers across the country in terms of vacant shop units, which is currently way below the national average. Over the past 18 months new retailers such as TK Maxx and Deichmann have opened and more recently there has been an influx of quality eateries including Kokoro, Wildwood, Creams and Bill’s - which is currently the best performing café in the Bill’s chain outside London. With a raft of top retailers including Primark, New Look, H&M and House of Fraser in The Mall and on Park Street, as well as a multitude of household names and independent traders on the High Street, Camberley really does have something for everyone. The town’s leisure and entertainment offer, with top high street eateries, the Camberley Theatre, Bowlplex and Vue Cinema, as well as quality pubs, bars and independent restaurants throughout the town, make Camberley the perfect place to spend time with family, friends and work colleagues. Helping maintain this momentum and raise the profile of the town is the Collectively Camberley Business Improvement District (BID) team, who have been working with The Mall, The Atrium and Surrey Heath Borough Council to deliver a packed programme of events throughout the year including November’s Christmas Lights switch-on event, attracting over 52,000 visitors to the town, which is a great indication of Camberley’s growing popularity. Disability Positive Surrey Heath Surrey Heath Borough Council has recently been recognised as a disability-positive employer. Jobcentre Plus has accepted Surrey Heath Borough Council’s application to be a ‘Two Ticks - Positive About Disability’ symbol holder. As an accredited organisation, the council is required to implement and annually review practices that meet the scheme’s 5 commitments in relation to recruitment, employment, retention and career development of people with a disability.
The commitments are: 1. T o interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities. 2. To discuss with disabled employees, at any time but at least once a year, what we can as an employer do to make sure they can develop and use their abilities. 3. To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment. 4. To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work.

Improving mental health services in Surrey Heath People in Surrey Heath now have direct access to treatment and therapies on the NHS for common mental health problems including depression, anxiety and phobias.
They can choose between four different organisations and a range of services including online therapy, face to face counselling and group therapy as part of a drive to improve services for local people. Those who think they need psychological support can still be referred by their GP but now they can also contact the providers directly themselves. Dr Andy Brooks, Chief Officer of Surrey Heath Clinical Commissioning Group and a Camberley GP, said: “This is a really exciting shift in the way people get treatment because

recycling
Spring cleaning? Bright spring days often spur us on to clear out cupboards and wardrobes.
Kitchen
Study
Many household items can be reused or recycled so there shouldn’t be too much waste. Your Surrey Heath collection service aims to make recycling as easy as possible. Did you know? We do collect… • e xtra recycling on your recycling week. • s mall electrical items and batteries on recycling week (bagged separately).
Sorting paperwork can be hard work – but the rewards can be long-lasting.
• s mall quantities of shoes and textiles on your refuse week (bagged separately).
If you’re knee-deep in filing there’s sure to be reams of recycling just waiting to be found!
The kitchen is often the busiest place in the house. It also offers a wide variety of items to recycle. It may be out-of-date food that has been pushed to the back of the cupboard or food containers or bottles.
Food for thought Have your kitchen caddy at the ready for any food waste. Contain your food using compostable liners or newspaper. Remember we don’t collect extra refuse (nonrecyclable waste). Please make sure you recycle all you can.
Remember to remove any food packaging. Food tins, pots, cartons and cardboard can go in your green bin.
If you have any unwanted books, there are British Heart Foundation Book & Music Banks around the borough. See www.surreyheath.gov.uk
Helpful hints •F eeling daunted? Sorting one bit at a time can help. •H ave two bags – one for recycling and one for paperwork that needs shredding. •T o help reduce time (and electricity!) spent shredding, tear names and addresses off letters for shredding as you go.

recycling
Recycle as you go! Wardrobe
Garage/shed
• Remember you can line your caddy using newspaper or compostable liners. This will help to keep your caddy clean.
Wardrobes can often contain an interesting assortment of items! Clothes and shoes can be reused or recycled. Don’t forget hats, scarves, paired gloves or socks, bags and belts can all be included too.
Your choices • For small amounts (carrier bag), the collection service on your refuse week may be most convenient. • Use the textile bank at your local Recycling Site. • Support your local charity shop.
Always… • Bag items as you go to keep contents clean and dry. Either using carrier bags or only part filling a black sack can make the job much more manageable wherever you choose to recycle them.
Top Tips
Treat chemicals with care. Weed killer and other chemicals should be taken to Wilton Road (Camberley) or Swift Lane (Bagshot) as they require careful disposal. Please do not put DIY waste or paint/varnish in either of your bins. These items should be taken to Wilton Road or Swift Lane.
• Flattening cardboard boxes will help you fit much more in your recycling bin.
• Sort the items before you go.
• Recycle little and often. For small amounts of textiles, batteries or small electrical items don’t forget the fortnightly collection service.
Putting the same type of items in the same bag/box should make it easier when you get there.
Keep up the good recycling!
If you are going to Wilton Road or Swift Lane;

Putting your best foot forward Walking For Health Do you want to get or stay active but don’t know where to start? Would you like to improve your physical and mental wellbeing for absolutely no cost? Surrey Heath is part of the nationwide ‘Walking for Health’ scheme, helping residents of all ages to live a healthier lifestyle. Research shows walking to have a positive impact on weight loss, cardiovascular function and lowering the risk of disease.
A gentle walk of around 15-30 minutes at London Recreation Ground in Camberley occurs on the last Thursday of every month. This is ideal for those who may be recovering from injury or illness, or taking their first steps back into physical activity.
Whilst improving physical health, those taking part will benefit from making new friends amongst the 100+ registered walkers and enjoying the natural environment to experience ‘green’ exercise.
The most popular walk starts at 10am every Wednesday morning, lasting between 60-90 minutes at varying locations within the borough. Meanwhile, for those who become keen ramblers, there are further opportunities to embrace the outdoors with walks of up to four hours!
Walks take place at a variety of locations across the borough and beyond, with each route led by a trained and friendly walk leader catering the walk to the group’s needs and capabilities.
Most walks offer the chance to sit down, chat with the sociable group of existing walkers and enjoy
refreshments either during or after the walk. For those wishing to enjoy these walks, there is no long term commitment and best of all it is absolutely free. If you’re looking for a further challenge or wanting to give back to the community, there are also opportunities to be a volunteer walk leader and guide a walk yourself! For a full list of the area’s walks, visit www.surreyheath.gov.uk/ leisure where you will find an online brochure. Surrey Search and Rescue Over 2,100 people go missing in Surrey every year. Surrey Search & Rescue is a 100% voluntary specialist search team that helps the emergency services find missing adults and children. With a team of over 50 people and 8 search dogs, Surrey Search and Rescue are on-call 24 hours a day, to respond across Surrey and surrounding areas. Team members undergo an initial six month training period covering techniques such as casualty care, navigation and working with the emergency services. After which they train at least once a week in locations across Surrey.
They are trained to find and give first aid to anyone reported missing or lost and evacuate them to safety; operating in woodland, farmland, town centres and around water, where the emergency services need help and manpower. In the four years since Surrey Search and Rescue have existed they have attended over 300 incidents. For more information visit www.sursar.org.uk
Survey reveals Surrey Heath has most tree cover
A recent aerial survey has identified Surrey Heath as having the highest concentration of trees compared to every other borough in the country. Thought to be the UK’s first ever complete tree count in England and Wales, the survey, carried out by Aerial Mapping Company Bluesky, revealed that 40 per cent of the borough is covered in trees. Overall the county of Surrey has seven districts in the survey’s
top 10, thought to be densely wooded because it has so many mature gardens. The survey documented over 280 million trees and was able to establish that 13.5 per cent of England and Wales is covered in trees.

Keep your drains clear from nasty blockages Know what you should be flushing down your toilet or pouring down your drains? Thousands of people suffer the misery of blocked drains every year - a result of unsuitable products being flushed down the loo or washed down the drain. The majority of blockages are caused by cooking fat and oil, which congeal in the sewers, forming a thick layer around the pipe. This prevents sewage from flowing and can cause it to back up. Wet wipes and sanitary items also contribute to some of the most troublesome blockages. Each year around 1,000 homes and 5,000 gardens in the Thames region flood with sewage as a result of blockages. This could easily be avoided by people simply disposing of their rubbish and food waste in the bin.
Love your loo! The drains connected to your home were not designed to cope with anything other than wastewater, toilet tissue and human waste. All paper and plastic waste, such as sanitary products, nappies and wet wipes, should be wrapped up and placed in a bin. Even the smallest of items, like dental floss and cotton buds, can have a damaging effect as they collect in the filters at sewage treatment works. Wet wipes do not break down like tissue, so may not get washed away down the pipe. When wipes mix with solidified fat, they set hard, forming a solid obstruction. This creates stinking, pipe-blocking ‘fatbergs’ beneath your house or in your street.
To flush, or not to flush? Even items labelled ‘flushable’ or ‘biodegradable’ do not break down in the sewer and contribute to blockages. Although these items disappear when you flush your loo, they do not break down in the sewers, as they take a number of years to disintegrate. Get Active!
Whatever your fitness level, age or ability, there are activities and expertly led groups available to suit you, whether to improve health or try something new. Here’s a sample of what’s on offer in Surrey Heath: The Heathland Conservation Society regularly meets on local heathland two Saturday mornings per month for around three hours, as well as every Wednesday from October to the end of February. These working parties are good spirited and enjoyable whilst at the same time carrying out essential work in maintaining and improving the health of the rare heathland habitat. Members of the medical profession and the Alzheimer’s Society have
agreed that it can be beneficial for people suffering early stages of dementia to be involved in conservation work and to take advantage of any organised walks in the countryside. To find out more about getting involved, contact the group on 07971 010048, email: information@heathlandconservation-society.org or visit www.heathlandconservation-society.org

In January 2014, Big Fish 117 Excellent Project set up a series of health and wellbeing projects with the aim of reaching the increasing older Nepali community in Surrey Heath. The activities combine on-thespot health checks and screening and a chance for participants to take part in intense but fun fitness circuits as well as traditional Nepali dancing and sing-alongs. Mrs Thapa attended the over 50s Nepali health and fitness social class in January 2014. For some time she had suffered with poor mobility and other physical health issues. Originally she came as an observer and doubted whether she could join in. However after one-to-one support and some basic exercise, Mrs Thapa is now a regular and fitter attendee.
Mrs Thapa now recruits new members and numbers have grown. Several of the women have made new friends and now attend as a small group with Mrs Thapa to a craft and language project run by Big Fish 117. To find out more, call 07919 424886 or email big.fish117@virgin.net
