Brand message Café Flora provides clientele with delicious, wholesome, plant-based meals and a relaxing atmosphere. Though our menu is entirely vegan, we offer flavorful and nutritious food combinations that would satisfy any meat-eater. We pride ourselves on our mellow culture of community and harmony. Anyone can pop in for just a meal or hang out with their friends in the later hours of evening. We also have a balanced atmosphere good for productivity and working. Though we do like to reach out to those unaccustomed to eating on a plant-based diet, we are also especially connected to the small vegan community of San Luis Obispo. There are few options for vegetarians and vegans amongst the many all-American BBQ places around. Because we do not cook with any animal products, customers can order whatever they wish on the menu. This creates a sense of trust and camaraderie amongst the Café and the clientele.
Purpose of manual This standards manual is meant to provide all art directors and future designers with set guidelines on how to utilize Café Flora’s brand identity. It should be used extensively in order to remain consistent in all of Café Flora’s products, advertisements, interiors, signage and anything using the business’s identity.

Logotypes Primary mark The primary mark contains the symbol of the chair made of vines on top of the name “café flora” and the motto justified underneath that, “Thought for Food”. The three should be stacked and used whenever possible. The primary colors of deep green and sea foam with said items should also be used whenever possible. If used often, the mark will become an instant read for returning customers and create consistency that can be relied on.
Thought for Food 4

One color primary When only one color is possible, the primary mark may be used in the deep green found from the vines on the chair and reversed out in white in the deep green. The only other color acceptable would be the secondary color of the solid warm tan. Either the reversed out option or the single color option should be used depending on both the background and the product material. The solid deep green should be used on light backgrounds and the solid warm tan can be used on the dark green. If no color options are available, the mark may be used in solid black or reversed out in white on black. This is important regarding legibility of the mark on various backgrounds.

Horizontal mark The horizontal mark contains the chair of vines symbol to the left of the title “café flora” in deep green and sea foam. This mark should be used for layouts that require a less vertical and stacked version of the logotype. Whether it is on the top of the letterhead or envelope, it allows for a more versatile usage of the name. This is helpful for applications where the stacked primary mark simply does not fit.

One color horizontal When only one color is possible for the horizontal mark, the same colors will be used as with the primary mark. The mark may be used as the solid deep green or reversed out in white in the deep green. The mark may also be used as the warm tan on the dark green. The use of either the reversed out version or the solid color version depends on the background and product material. If no color options are available, the mark may be used in solid black or reversed out in white on black. This is important regarding legibility of the mark on various backgrounds.

Wordmark The wordmark is the primary mark without the symbol of the chair made of vines. The title of “café flora” is stacked upon “Thought for Food”. The motto will still be justified to the title underneath as in the primary mark. The most used colors should be the same as the primary mark with “café flora” in the deep green and “Thought for Food” in sea foam. This mark should be used when there is no room for the symbol or the application looks cluttered with it. It can also be used on the business card when the symbol by itself is already in use.
Thought for Food 8
Cafe Flora | Standards Manual © Copyright 2017
One color wordmark As in the other marks, the wordmark can be used in a solid deep green or warm tan if there is only one color available. The mark can also be reversed out in white in the deep green and the warm tan may be used on the dark green. If no color options are available, the mark may be used in solid black or reversed out in white on black.

Primary mark The primary mark in full color and in one color should have a minimum size of .8'' wide and .7'' tall. The reversed out white should be a minimum of .9'' wide and .8'' tall. The same goes for the warm tan on dark green. Any smaller than this would eliminate all legibility of the name, motto and symbol. However, the mark can be made this small in order to fit on smaller applications such as a business card.

Safe space The area around any of the marks besides the stand alone symbol should be equal or greater to the height in the lowercase ‘c’ in “café flora”. This is to limit cluttering the area around the marks. If there is content or other graphic elements too close to the marks, it will detract from the prominence of the mark.

Graphic elements Chair of vines The symbol of the chair is the most prominent graphic element. It should be used the most often when the logotype is not present. It should not be used in the same location as a logotype or the word mark. It may be used in any of the colors acceptable for the logotypes.
16
Cafe Flora | Standards Manual Š Copyright 2017
Leaf A notable graphic element is the leaf taken from the symbol of the chair. It usually appears in its full color sea foam from the primary color palette, however it can be used in any of the colors from page 10. It is usually utilized in a pattern form, such as on the envelope and business card. The size will depend on the application, but it should be relatively small if using a pattern and relatively large if used alone.
Vine Another notable element is the vine design taken from the chair as well. It is mostly seen in the deep green color from the primary mark but can also be used in any of the colors seen on page 10. It is mainly used as line separators or decorative borders.

The primary colors of sea foam and dark green will be used as often as possible, especially regarding the marks and graphic elements. The sea foam makes up the leaves and flowers on the chair as well as the motto underneath the title. The sea foam may also be used at an opacity of 15%. The deep green makes up the vines and the title. The deep green should be used for the majority of titles in most applications. This includes the information on the business card, envelope and letterhead as well as headers and sub headers in various applications. The sea foam may be used for smaller amounts of text such as subheads, but must be used on either very dark or very light backgrounds.

Secondary color palette The secondary palette consists of the dark green and warm tan. These colors should be used when the material or application either calls for more contrast than just the primary colors or cannot work with the primary colors at all. Dark green may be used for large amounts of text due to its similarity with black. Warm tan may only be used in small amounts of text and only on very light or very dark backgrounds. It also may be used at an opacity of 15%. It is especially preferred that the warm tan be placed on top of the dark green when needing more contrast.

Typefaces Primary type family Baskerville Baskerville should be used for headers, sub headers and brief information on both web and print applications. This can be seen on the envelope, letterhead and business cards. In order to have further contrast, Regular should be used for less important information such as a street address. Semibold should be used for more important aspects such as sub headers, phone numbers, emails and websites. Bold should be used for titles and headers. Oblique should be used as sub headers under bold headers for increased contrast. Baskerville should be primarily used in the deep green and dark green and not be reversed out as it is a serif typeface.

Secondary type family Europa Europa should be used for all body text and longer chunks of information in both print and web applications. This can be most seen in the letterhead. Regular should be the most heavily utilized in body text at 10pt size with 13pt leading. However, when stronger contrasts are needed than just line spacing, Bold and Oblique may be used. Europa may be used in any of the colors, but used in the bold version for reversed out type on darker backgrounds.

Dear Ms. McCormick, Bliss Cafe is one of the few vegan options within San Luis Obispo. It offers an entirely plant-based menu including smoothies, bowls, pastries and espresso. Though it has creekside dining and a lovely atmosphere, I would like to improve on the range of clientele and convert the place into a first-choice location for hanging out and studying. The new name comes from the term ‘flora and fauna’. ‘Flora’ refers to a collection of plant life in a specific area and time. Since the cafe only serves plant-based food, it seemed suitable to name it as such. The motto ‘thought for food,’ comes from a reversal of ‘food for thought’. Instead of fueling one’s thoughts, Cafe Flora will fuel one’s food with thoughts about health, balance, harmony and wholesomeness.

The logotype is based off the visual representation of a chair made of vines and various ‘flora’. The chair expresses the ‘cafe’ element of the business and the plants represent the vegan menu. The primary logo colors reference plant life and vegetation. The choice of type and lowercase letters was a direct method of conveying a friendly and mellow culture to the newer clientele. The typeface is geometric, but also has slightly rounded ends to give a softer look. It also mimics the line-weight and colors of the symbol. All the best,
