HID Lighting Changes In 2009 … Ready For It? Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) • • • • •
Outlines significant provisions affecting the sale of metal halide lighting fixtures. States that beginning in 2009, 150W to 500W metal halide lighting fixtures must contain ballasts that operate at a certain level of efficiency. Fixtures that are compliant will have a capital “E” printed in a circle on packaging and ballast labels. Probe-start magnetic ballasts for metal halide lamps up to 400W will be virtually eliminated from new fixtures. 175W to 400W probe-start metal halide lamps will be eliminated from new fixtures.
Exceptions Apply • • • • •
Fixtures with regulated lag ballasts Fixtures with electronic ballasts for operation at 480V 150W wet-location fixtures containing a ballast rated to operate at ambient temperatures above 50ºC. Distributors will be able to sell their inventories of noncompliant fixtures until they are depleted (unless prohibited by state law). EISA 2007 covers fixtures and not ballasts, so distributors will be able to keep selling noncompliant ballasts to customers for spot replacement needs in existing installations.

Pulse-Start versus Probe-Start • • • • • •
Characterized by clean lines,
Pulse-start systems produce higher light output initially and over time. Pulse-start systems operate more efficiently. Pulse-start systems produce whiter light. Pulse-start systems provide good lamp-to-lamp color consistency. Pulse-start systems turn on and re-strike faster. Pulse-start systems provide up to 25% energy cost savings in existing applications over probe-start and up to 30% savings in capital and operating costs in new construction.
