HAPPENINGS Keeping you in the know SHEALY ELECTRICAL OFFERS COST SAVINGS SOLUTIONS FOR By Senior Account Executive, Al Howell Shealy Electrical Wholesalers is working toward a cost savings solution for Invista in Lugoff, SC. The project includes retrofitting existing fixture by changing ballasts from the magnetic F34T12 to the electronic FO28T8 from Osram Sylvania. Most of the fixtures in the manufacturing area were converted from 2 lamp to 1 lamp and retrofitted with a new reflector. This gave more light output than the two F34 lamp fixtures. In an effort to save more money and energy, we were able to remove the existing 2 lamp ballast from each fixture and use 1-4 lamp ballasts to operate 4 fixtures. Doing this lowered the ballast count in the manufacturing area. Office areas underwent a change of existing 4 lamp F34T12 fixtures to two F028 fixtures. Most of the offices had two fixtures. Using one 4 lamp electronic ballast allowed us to remove the two 4 lamp T12 ballasts. We also replaced all incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps, lowering the use of electricity from 100 watts to 23 watts. In the warehouse area we replaced all 400 watt hi-bay fixtures with the 4 lamp and 6 lamp fluorescent fixtures. This allows more lighting coverage for the area. Also, when changing to fluorescent high bays, there is no warm up period for the lamps. A “blip” does not cause the area to go dark and the fixtures can be set to motion sensors. All of these changes makes Invista applicable for EPACT tax credit and will save them over 60% on energy annually (see page 7 for more EPACT tax credit information). Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction EPAct 2005’s new incentive for lighting and building efficiency Writing off the cost of a capital investment such as energy-efficient lighting is not new. Under current law, the cost of energy-saving investments must be capitalized and depreciated or amortized over time. Thanks to the Commercial Buildings Deduction, a business can now potentially write off the entire cost of the new lighting in the taxable year it is placed in service. “Placed in service” defines the time at which the lighting is ready for its intended use. So it’s an accelerated tax deduction: If a cost item associated with installing new lighting is normally depreciated and claimed over a period of years, it can now be claimed in a single tax year. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) sets higher federal building performance standards and more aggressive state energy efficiency provisions. More importantly, EPAct 2005 contains a significant new tax dxeduction to foster investment in energy efficient commercial buildings as defined in ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2001. This can result in significantly lower total project costs of both new construction and retrofit application for the end user as well as incremental energy savings. Businesses can receive deductions for new or renovated buildings that save 50% or more of projected annual energy costs for heating, cooling, and lighting compared to model national standards. They are also eligible for partial deductions for efficiency improvements to individual lighting, HVAC and water heating or envelope systems. Here is a review of some of the largest categories of commercial property owners capturing EPAct benefits: Industrial and Manufacturing Facilities These are large spaces where EPAct tax incentives based on square footage become particularly lucrative. The EPAct tax incentive often drives payback below two years, making approval of lighting upgrades automatic. Replacing metal halide fixtures with fluorescent lighting is the most common project. Enclosed Parking Garages Although parking garages are often unconditioned spaces, they are eligible for EPAct tax deductions. There are numerous parking garages in urban environments, and electricity for lighting is the primary building energy cost. Warehouses Distribution centers particularly benefit from EPAct because the deductions are based on total square footage. The larger the space, the larger the incentive. The most common lighting retrofit is from metal halide lighting to fluorescent lighting fixtures where the energy savings alone are substantial. What’s more, while electricity costs are rising, the price of these lighting systems is decreasing, making the investment even more attractive. Warehouse owners are increasing their use of occupancy sensors so that with seasonal product lines and slow moving inventory, the lighting is kept totally off when sections of the warehouse are not in use. This is a very cost-effective way to gain substantial energy savings. Government Projects The law provides an incentive to designers to incorporate today’s energy efficient products into their designs for government buildings. “Government” includes federal, state and local governments, including K-12 public schools. Although virtually all government-building categories have benefited from this incentive, the most frequent uses are for K-12 public schools, state universities and colleges, and parking garages. Other common categories include post offices, military bases, libraries, courthouses and hospitals. National and Regional Retailers Large retailers have felt the impact of the economic downturn. Many are implementing retrofit projects and are curtailing new store construction programs. This is enabling retailers to focus on energy-cost-cuttings initiatives. OSRAM SYLVANIA is pleased to offer this industry first . . . An LED street light system that can be installed in most existing fixtures. This revolutionary system does not require the discard of your existing fixtures, and delivers light only where you want it. What’s more, it consumes 55% to 80% less energy, is mercury free, and eliminates service calls due to cycling HPS lamps.

This Sylvania LED Retrofit Kit replaces up to 250-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps in street light fixtures. By taking advantage of the directional light distribution of high power white LEDs, this revolutionary system delivers light only where needed, minimizing light trespass in application. It is an ideal solution for communities that wish to convert their existing street lights to an environmentally preferable technology that offers substantial energy and maintenance cost savings as well as dramatic improvement in light quality. It is mercury-free, lead-free, and eliminates service calls for cycling HID Lamps.

Try the new dimmers from Lutron to not only add ambiance, but also benefit from using less energy and getting more life out of your existing light bulbs. By switching to Lutron dimmers you can automatically reduce your energy intake by at least 15%. The typical investment for a Lutron commercial dimmer is $100.00. This investment is a little higher than the residential purchase because the dimmer is required to control larger loads. However, the running hours are much longer in a commercial installation and this results in larger savings. Here’s how: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Average commercial dimmer load = 1200Wv Average energy savings while dimmer is in use = 20%vi Average daily commercial dimmer use = 14 hours/day vii Average number of days used for commercial operations = 250 viii Average annual electricity savings = decrease in load (1200W x 20%) multiplied by annual use (14 hours/day x 250 days) = 840kWh/yr

A commercial dimmer can save $85.68/year in electricity costs compared to a switch leaving an average commercial dimmer paying for itself in approximately 1 year! After that, the customer continues to save $85.68 year after year. Better yet, if the dimming level is increased, the savings will be larger and the payback will be shorter! Lutron has a variety of dimmers to choose from, so you are sure to find one that will fit your needs exactly.
