Your Hazard Communication Journey Starts Here Companies that handle hazardous chemicals want to know exactly what GHS is and how it will affect the way that they do business. For good reason: OSHA’s updated Hazard Communication regulation means different requirements around chemical labeling and mandatory employee training. With major changes underway, you want to turn to one source to guide you along your Hazard Communication journey. Brady has the information you need, as well as a plethora of products and valuable services to help you transition to the new system and stay compliant.
What is GHS?
GHS = Globally Harmonized System of Classification & Labeling of Chemicals GHS is a system that’s been created by the United Nations for standardizing the classification and labeling of chemicals throughout the world. In the United States, OSHA is enforcing GHS by adopting it into its Hazard Communication Standard by: •
Defining environmental, physical, and health hazards from chemicals Communicating these hazards and protective measures on labels and safety data sheets
Use the following checklist to get GHS compliant
Under the GHS format, labels will include signal words, pictograms, and hazard and precautionary statements.
Chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers have until 2016 to fully comply with OSHA’s updated Hazard Communication regulation (29 CFR 19.10.1200).
Why does GHS matter?
• December 1, 2013: All
•
Chemical import/export means big business Globally, the production and use of chemicals is a more than $1.7 trillion per year enterprise ($400 billion in the U.S. alone). With such an impact on the world economy, it’s critical that the import and export of chemicals be made as safe and efficient as possible. The GHS standard globally helps keep workers safe and informed of chemical hazards.
How does the GHS standard impact you? New labels & safety data sheets required
Per OSHA’s updated Hazard Communication regulation, chemical manufacturers and importers must evaluate chemical hazards and make sure they are communicated properly. Employees must be educated so they understand the hazards and new labeling requirements. Under the GHS standard, all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) have been updated to a new 16-section format.
employees must be trained on label requirements and safety data sheet format
• June 1, 2015: Chemical
manufacturers must comply with all final rule provisions
• December 1, 2015:
Chemical distributors must ship containers using GHScompliant labels
• June 1, 2016: Workplace employers must update labeling and HAzCom programs as needed; and provide training for newly identified hazards
THE CIRCUIT SPRING & SUMMER 2013
5
Six elements of the new GHS label format • Signal Word
Indicates relative level of hazard. “Danger” is used for the most severe instances, while “Warning” is less severe
• Symbols - Hazard Pictograms
Convey health, physical and environmental hazard information with red diamond pictograms. May use a combination of one to five symbols
• Manufacturer Information
Company name, address and telephone number
• Precautionary Statements
Phrases associated with each hazard statement, that describe general preventative, response, storage, or disposal precautions
• Hazard Statements
Phrases that describe the nature of hazardous products and oftentimes the degree of hazard
• Product Name or Identifiers
GHS pictogram symbols and hazard classes The new GHS symbols, also known as hazard pictograms, will be used to identify hazardous products
and are commonly grouped by chemical/physical risk, health risk and environmental risk. Make sure your workplace is prepared for the new hazard communication requirements and training. For more information on GHS, contact your Shealy or EDI sales person today.

ARC FLASH SAFETY COMPLIANCE EASY TO ACHIEVE | HIGHLY EFFECTIVE | ECONOMICAL Are you using barriers or barricades around areas where electricians are performing live maintenance of electrical equipment? If not, you could be putting employees at risk in the event of an Arc-Flash.
W
ith Safe-T-Arms barricades, arc flash safety compliance can be easy-to-achieve, highly effective, and economical. This product enables employers to establish a highly visible boundary warning of arc flash hazard areas, and instruct unqualified and/or unprotected persons to remain at a safe distance. The end result is consistent, predictable compliance, which is the key to any workplace safety program. Each electrical system is different and requires competent flash hazard analysis in accordance with NFPA70E. That’s why Safe-T-Arms barricades come in 3 different styles:
Universal Magnetic Mount
Developed to offer a quick and hassle free solution to visible barriers. When aligned with the edge or front of the enclosure, the technician is assured that they are well within the suggested legal boundaries. • •
Made of non-conductive material Unbreakable material that makes it ideal for harsh conditions
Permanent
For enclosures that are available frequently. Ensures that there is always a barrier accessible. When not in use, the arms can be left in an upright position. As the technician needs a barrier, they simply pull out on the arms and they will fold down to a perpendicular position and lock back in place.
Free Standing
For applications that deal with voltage greater than 600VAC. When the desired distance is determined these units can be placed accordingly. This collapsible aluminum stand folds out and is selfsupporting. The arms simply snap into precisely milled groves that hold them securely in place. All units come standard with a 10’ piece of safety chain and two ends.
All Safe-T-Arms barricades are made within NFPA standards, which cover a broad range of electrical safety issues, including safety-oriented workplaces, proper installation procedures, electrical system maintenance practices, and special equipment requirements. For more information on these important subjects, and to see how Safe-T-Arms barricades can become an integral part of your workplace safety program, contact your Shealy or EDI sales person today.

KN W THE FACTS
Bill Lawler - National Account Lighting Consultant
Just Imagine - It’s 01/01/2030 Just a few minutes ago, the ball dropped at Times Square marking the beginning of the New Year. It’s been 22 years now since the ball first got its shiny new LEDs. Back then LEDs were a budding new technology taking the lighting world by storm. Now these tiny little inventions light almost everything we do. They are bright, ultra efficient and last for years. Just one fixture with these electronic wonders can light up a whole room. It has been over a decade since the U.S. has had to build a new power plant and we have more than enough power. In fact, over the last 20 years, power demand for lighting has dropped over 46% and carbon emissions are at alltime lows. I guess all those things the U.S. Green Building Council and Sierra Club preached all these years really were true.
Jump back to today ... Think about how far we can go in 17 short years. The Department of Energy has reported that installed lumen-hours for LED general lighting should shoot from 1% in 2012 to 76% in 2030 within commercial buildings. In our homes, they see a move from 1% to 62% in the same time frame. That means over the next couple of decades, we need to sell and install enough LED fixtures to replace almost
70% of the current installed lumenhours in the US. So how do we get from here to there? Knowing what to look for in quality LED fixtures and lamps is a critical first step. Using quality fixtures will help keep end users interested and confident in the technology. The major lighting manufactures are a great place to start. Companies like Acuity, Hubbell, Juno, GE Lighting, Sylvania, Cooper and Philips have been making light fixtures and lamps for years and know
what it takes to make a great product. Another manufacturer to watch is a relative newcomer to lighting, but an expert at LED - that is Cree Lighting. Some others like RAB and TCP are making top notch LED products as well. With any LED fixture or lamp, look for the Lighting Facts label. This will show you how bright the fixture is, how much power it uses, what color temperature it is and what the color rendering is. Above is a sample label with a breakdown of how to read it. There are other reports such as
LM-80,LM-70 and CALiPER reports available as well with more detailed data from independent labs. Next, look at the fixture itself. Is it quality construction? Are there gaps in the metal? When lit, is the light consistent in pattern and color or are there hot spots? Does it have a UL or ETL label? Remember when looking at LED light, that it is a different kind of light than incandescent or fluorescent. The light is directed at the spot where light is needed, it does not glow and spill light throughout an area like the older omnidirectional light sources. So when you evaluate the light, look at the areas that need to be lit and see if they look the way you want them to look.
At the end of the day ... Treat LED shopping like you would when shopping for any other electronics. Brand does matter and the cheapest is probably not the best, but it might work in the right application. We constantly evaluate and test LED fixtures and lamps at EDI and we will continue to do our best to provide you with the highest quality products. If you need help finding the right LED solution for your next project, we are just a phone call away!

sometimes,
thinking inside the box
can be a good thing
C
ommercial construction projects are starting to pick up again, but life as a contractor still isn’t as rosy as it used to be. Competition is stiff and bids are still tight. Contractors everywhere are looking for an edge. “How can we become more competitive?” “How can we win more big projects?” The unspoken question behind all of that is: “How can we employ labor saving products and technologies to help us be more profitable?”
M
aterial handling takes up approximately 40% of a field worker’s time on the job. It is recognized to be the single most common cause of unproductive time on a job. Shealy Electrical and EDI want to get our customers the right material, in the right quantities, at the right place, at the right time. Our goal is to keep the installers installing. We use our expertise to facilitate the installation of our customer’s material so that they don’t spend their time waiting and searching for it. We keep you up and running. At a current Bridgestone project in South Carolina, we met with Greg Klein - Logistics for electrical contractor Feyen Zylstra (FZ). This is FZ’s first project in the area of the country and Shealy Electrical is honored to offer them job site solutions on such a high profile project.
F
eyen Zylstra has used Work Cell Boxes on past projects, but not in the Shealy way. On past jobs, the boxes were set up at the beginning of the job with standard products. A lot of the material wasn’t used and ended up being wasted inventory. Shealy is different. We work with our customers to set up our Work Cell Boxes with the most efficient
layout and with material that is project specific. Anything and everything in the Work Cell Box is sure to be used.
G
ary Breland (Account Manager in North Augusta) works closely with Greg to determine the right products for the job. After looking at the job take-offs, they determined that FZ would need 8 Work Cell Boxes for the Bridgestone project. “It is crucial to get the material as close to the work areas as possible,” says Greg. “You want to minimize trips from the working area to the material storage facilities. We could lose up to 2 man hours if one of our installers had to walk from one end of the site to another! Now, our guys are working within a 300 ft. radius of where their material is.” Gary set up each box with the minimum and maximum of what the workers would use on a regular basis. “Each Work Cell Box cannot be set up with the entire bill of material,” says Gary. “It is crucial to correctly estimate the anticipated usage and adjust the inventory as the project progresses.” Gary’s expertise in inventory and maintenance help make FZ even more efficient when it comes to mate-
rial handling. Management doesn’t have to worry about making sure they have every fitting, strap, nut, and bolt that they need. Gary keeps the entire inventory organized and limits the clutter that occurs when a variety of hands are on the products each day.
A
s an added benefit, Gary is at the job site on a regular basis, communicating with the foremen - discussing material usage and needs. This constant communication allows Shealy to make adjustments quickly as the project moves forward. On a productivity and financial basis, Greg calculated that the Shealy Work Cell Boxes save them about an hour per day per installer. FZ has 50 installers on the project at a time working 50 hour work weeks. “That saves us one guy’s weekly pay per day!” Greg exclaimed.
Start thinking inside the box. For more information on how you can employ labor saving products and technologies that will help you be more profitable, contact Barclay Ryan at bryan@shealyelectrical.com.

XT9000 SYSTEM Advanced Energy Efficiency Technology
X
Energy Technologies has created a patented wind turbine technology that is energy-efficient, and costcompetitive in the natural wind market sector. The turbine is six feet in diameter, and uses ceramic bearings rather than gears at its center hub, with permanent magnets attached to its wheel perimeter. As the wheel spins, the magnets pass through a patented track of copper stators which are embedded in glass-filled nylon and housed within an aerodynamic shroud. Twenty blades attached to the wheel are designed to make the turbine respond to wind speeds as low as two miles per hour.
The turbine generates approximately 1,500 watts at a constant wind speed of 31 miles per hour. XEnergy has developed a unique application for its wind turbine, named the XT9000 System, for recovering energy from waste air streams of evaporator/chiller systems. In a commercial evaporator unit, water is cooled by evaporation into a high-flowing air stream. The air stream is pulled through vertical layers of corrugated plastic which are made wet by the flow of pumped water. This water then collects in the bottom pump of the evaporator, and from there is continuously recycled. A large fan is typically located at the top of the evaporator and is driven by a high-horsepower motor to generate the air flow. The evaporator can cool the recycled water by approximately ten degrees Fahrenheit. This cooled water can then be used to cool a facility directly through a blow fan, or indirectly through a chiller unit

Wind turbine technology offers advanced energy generation and conservation from cooling towers.
in combination with a blow fan. Chillers consume large amounts of electricity in order to cool water, and the use of evaporatorcooled water to feed the chiller greatly reduces that electricity consumption When the XT9000 System is installed on top of a commercial evaporator, 700 to 1,000 watts of power can be recovered directly from the exhaust air as the turbine spins and generates energy. The XT9000 System reduces the fan motor power consumption of the evaporator by 20% to 30%, as a result of decreased air flow within the evaporator. Because of the large capacity of commercial evaporators, the resulting exit water temperature increase is only approximately 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Evaporator performance depends on ambient temperature, humidity, site elevation and the overall efficiency of the evaporator. The performance of the

evaporator, as well as the chiller, is typically adjusted by the user depending on the size of the facility, the changing occupancy and the energy conservation budget. This is achieved by adjusting the output water temperature of the evaporator and/or the chiller. In a manual operation situation,
the small increase in the exit water temperature due to the use of the XT9000 System simply passes through to the facility blow fans. In an automatically controlled evaporator/chiller system, the small increase in the exit water temperature needs to be added to the output water temperature set points to ensure that it passes through to the facility as an energy conservation measure.
As an example of the application of the XT9000 System, when installed on an 11-foot, 25-horsepower motor commercial evaporator the wind turbine produced 0.8 kW. The reduction in fan motor power consumption was measured to be 6.0 kW with an associated 0.3 to 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit rise in the exit water temperature. The combined energy generation and conservation yields a return of investment (ROI) lower than five years at a 50% duty cycle and a price of electricity of $0.10 per kWh. Initial calculations indicate that the application of the XT9000 System would result in these substantial energy savings, with a simple rate of return of approximately five years, depending on the evaporator fan diameter and the fan motor horsepower. Additional factors resulting from an XT9000 System application such as prolonged fan motor life, potential reduced evaporator water loss, and reduction of carbon emissions, would result in further cost savings. For more information on how wind technology can work for your business, contact Jim Woods at jwoods@ shealyelectrical.com.

Exceed energy reduction goals. Monitor and verify energy savings. Reduce energy cost and consumption Lighting is one of the largest culprits of energy waste in buildings. And it takes more than just energy efficient lighting to significantly reduce your energy costs. Powerlink lighting control systems reduce energy costs as much as 30 percent by automatically turning off lighting during unoccupied periods. Retrofit is easy with Powerlink lighting control systems, with payback periods often less than two years. Compared with other energy savings technologies, a Powerlink control system can provide both a lower initial capital outlay and greater energy savings. Powerlink lighting control systems can also deliver savings by serving as a key component of a building’s demand response system, which saves money by reducing lighting levels during peak demand periods.
No additional installation cost Powerlink lighting control systems are housed in a standard lighting panelboard. There are no extra boxes to mount, relays to wire, or complex panel schedules to decipher. Each Powerlink panel comes from the factory fully assembled and tested. Installing a Powerlink lighting panel takes no more time than mounting a standard lighting panelboard.
Design operation and maintenance simplicity Powerlink lighting control systems simplify a designer’s life by eliminating the need to create special lighting schedules or to negotiate with the architect over limited space constraints. Powerlink lighting control systems also reduce installation time over other technologies by eliminating extra cabinets and wiring. Facility and maintenance personnel will also enjoy the ability to quickly change schedules and operation from a central workstation.
Up to eight panels can be controlled from a single controller.
Monitor and verify your energy performance You expect an energy management system to perform. With Powerlink MVP, that performance goes to a totally new level. These panels not only provide savings by controlling lights, but also provide a total infrastructure for measuring and verifying the performance of all your lighting and plug load energy conservation measures. The Powerlink MVP lighting control system incorporates the same great features found in the Powerlink G3 3000 level system, in addition to integral branch circuit and main metering. Integral metering is accomplished using the PowerLogic branch circuit power meter (BCPM), which is a highly accurate, full-featured, multi-branch circuit power meter that provides unrivalled low-current monitoring. • Monitor by circuit, zone, space, or complete lighting system • Review data through existing building management software, or specialized MVP software to isolate areas of energy waste and improve efficiency • Implement energy saving methods to reduce energy costs • Achieve greater savings month-over-month and year-over-year, while accomplishing your energy management goals.

Everybody CAN do it, BUT they don’t. We have learned the basics and we do them well. The bottom line, we do what we say we are going to do. We instill confidence in our customers by having the products they need, having limited backorders, giving them the pricing agreed upon, and invoicing for exactly what was purchased. On top of that, we offer service after the sale. It is not rocket science!!

Directional Speaker Array Federal Signal’s Model DSA Directional Speaker Array provides excellent voice and tone reproduction and is ideal for overcoming high levels of industrial noise.
D
esign flexibility allows the user to combine up to four speaker arrays; each array will hold from two to six re-entrant speakers. Speakers have a 70 degree horizontal angle of dispersion, accommodating specific sound output patterns. When vertical stacks are placed 90 degrees apart, a 180 degree horizontal coverage is possible.
T
he Model DSA Mounting kits allow for multiple speaker arrays to be mounted on the same pole at 90 degree increments. The downward tilt can be adjusted by 15 degrees. The mounting flexibility of this system allows the speakers to be pointed directly at a targeted area for more concentrated sound output.
A DSA consists of a corrosion resistant aluminum frame with fiberglass projectors and stainless steel mounting hardware. Each speaker contains a high-efficiency 100 watt driver.
A
mplification, tone generation and signal timing are provided by the Model UV controller, purchased separately. Ideal for outdoor industrial plant warning, the Model DSA speaker array allows sound coverage to be customized to each site, preventing wasted sound in and around the plant. Even more - The model DSA provides better speech intelligibility within a coverage zone than omnidirectional speaker arrays.
