and grow business across a diverse group of customer segments – in other words we prefer not to specialize in just one sport. We view it as not only a strategic advantage for Shealy Electrical but also see the benefits it provides customers and suppliers. Let me give a few examples. •
Having a diverse customer base creates the need for our sales associates to be knowledgeable about multiple new products and our locations to stock a greater breadth of product categories. Thus, customers have local access to a wider range of products and sales people who understand how to apply those products. Meanwhile, suppliers appreciate the fact that we sell and support their entire product line.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
Know counterfeits
pose danger
Using counterfeit electrical products can result in a higher risk for failure or malfunction. Such failures may result in electrical shock, overheating or short circuits, leading to equipment failure, fires or explosions that can cost workers their lives and cause considerable property damage.
Know counterfeits
are hard to spot
All well-known brands face the issue of counterfeiting. Counterfeit product manufacturers rely on deception, the internet, and prices below market level to find their way into our homes, businesses, and commercial and industrial facilities. The more sophisticated counterfeiters become, the more difficult counterfeit products are to identify.
Know
you can help Buy from authorized resellers. The best way to avoid counterfeit electrical products is if you can trace the path of commerce to the original manufacturer. If every individual along a product’s supply chain played an active role in stopping counterfeit products from being bought and sold, the demand for counterfeit electrical products would decrease. Reducing the spread of counterfeit electrical products can help ensure maximum electrical safety protection.
Know how to
report a counterfeit If you identify a counterfeit in the field, report it to the brand owner. This will allow authentification of the suspect product and ensure that it is removed from the marketplace. If you cannot find the brand contact information, contact the IPR Center who will disseminate the information for appropriate response. Contact the IPR Center at IPRCeneter@dhs.gove or 1-866-IPR-2060

10 TIPS
TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR SWITCHGEAR With increasing dependence on computers and automated processes, most modern facilities cannot afford downtime. And, as technologies, processes and user demands evolve over time, an electrical system must be able to support these changes. For companies with aging switchgear and budget constraints on capital improvement projects, there’s good news! Following are ten life extension tips to enhance electrical reliability.
01 02
Perform Infrared Inspections Although not a substitute for a maintenance program, thermal imaging (infrared) is a valuable tool that can be done while the equipment is energized. If done safely and properly, an infrared inspection can identify loose bus connections before they result in a full or partial equipment outage. Maintenance can be scheduled to correct the identified issue. Having infrared viewing windows installed allows infrared inspections to be done quickly and safely.
Exercise Circuit Breakers on an Annual Basis A simple but very valuable practice is to manually operate circuit breakers once a year. This keeps the contacts clean and helps operating mechanisms move freely.
THE CIRCUIT SUMMER & FALL 2015

07 08 09
10
21
Don’t Neglect Recommended Maintenance
Switchgear should be cleaned, inspected, tightened, lubricated, and exercised on a regular basis. The frequency of maintenance depends on the operating conditions. Moisture and heat combined with dirt, dust, or other environmental contaminates will deteriorate the insulation, conductive materials, and protective devices in the equipment at an accelerated rate.
Recondition the Equipment
A more intensive maintenance option for circuit breakers is in-shop reconditioning, which should be performed when the on-site maintenance work scope cannot bring the circuit breaker within tolerances defined in current industry standards. The circuit breaker is initially tested against ANSI standards and then completely disassembled, cleaned, and inspected. Damaged parts are refurbished or replaced, and pivot points are re-lubricated before the circuit breaker is reassembled. The reconditioned circuit breaker, including the new assemblies, is retested against ANSI standards.
Keep Good Records and Trend Performance
Unless maintenance testing has been utilized to track the performance of circuit breakers, degradation of insulation and the moving parts may go unnoticed. Switchgear components may be out of design tolerance yet still be functional for a long period of time. Tracking test data provides a better idea of the expected life of the equipment and helps focus maintenance efforts on the areas that need it the most.
Upgrade the Equipment
With the advancements in circuit breaker designs, those with older technology may no longer be considered sustainable solutions. To take advantage of the more advanced technology, the switchgear lineup could be replaced. A more cost-effective alternative would be to leave the switchgear structure and bussing in place and upgrade the existing equipment with the latest state of the art circuit breakers.
Outsource Preventive Maintenance Via a Long-Term Service Agreement
Very few electrical maintenance or contracting companies can perform all of the required maintenance activities for an electrical distribution system. A professional electrical engineer can assist facility management with the selection of a qualified electrical maintenance contractor to develop a service agreement that addresses maintenance requirements and frequency. This ensures that maintenance will not be overlooked and standardized work scopes are used throughout the duration of the agreement.
Comply with the Requirements of NPFA 70E
One of the steps to comply with the requirements of NFPA 70E®: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace is to “maintain all electrical distribution system components”. In fact, NFPA 70E recommends following NFPA 70B: Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance as well as manufacturer’s recommendations.
Utilize Predictive Maintenance Tools
Besides trending test data, which can be analyzed to predict equipment life and maintenance requirements, on-line monitoring tools are available that can provide warnings of impending failures. Online monitoring systems operate continually and have the advantage of recognizing a condition that may not be apparent during a one-time inspection.
Perform a Short Circuit Analysis and a Time Current Coordination Study If the switchgear components do not have a proper short circuit rating, there could be catastrophic damage to the equipment and surrounding area. A short circuit analysis will determine if the switchgear is rated properly. There may also be the need to update the coordination study. Coordinated circuit breaker settings can prevent unnecessary interruptions of faults by the switchgear that should have been interrupted by a downstream device. Electrical equipment and power distribution systems have never been designed to be or intended to remain perpetually energized without interaction by the owner. By implementing the tips covered above, you can maximize the life and reliability of your switchgear.
PROJECT PROFILE
KEYWELL METALS MCCARTER ELECTRIC Keywell Metals purchases high temperature alloys and titanium scrap from all over the world. They test and analyze, cut it down, clean it and resell it to other specialty metal companies.
K
eywell Metals has expanded its operations into what was formerly Davis Steel, in Matthews. The project began in the summer of 2014 when McCarter Electric was contracted for the electrical portion of the job. McCarter, with the help of Shealy Electrical, was also able to obtain the lighting portion of the job.
THE SOLUTION Keywell Metals expansion into Matthews created multiple issues that had to be
addressed with the new lighting. The following goals were attained with the help of the Shealy team: • • • • •
Tungsten Free Fixtures Lighting Layouts for Production Line Lighting Layouts for Cleaning System Lower Maintenance Fixtures Utilize Available Utility Rebates
Throughout the job there were multiple challenges that Shealy was able to help McCarter address. The unique nature of the project required that there could be no tungsten in any product in the facility. Tungsten has a higher melting point than titanium and if any tungsten got into the product it would not melt, creating a void in the metal. This prompted Keywell Metals to purchase only LED fixtures. After the fixtures were selected, Shealy was able to provide a sample and determine the type of lens that would offer the most protection and best light

THE RESULT McCarter Electric and Shealy were able to help Keywell Metals transform the old 1940s Davis Steel warehouse into a fully-functional and environmentally conscious facility. The difference in the quality of light between the existing fluorescents and the new LEDs is evident. The light is much brighter and creates a better, safer working environment for Keywell Metals employees.

Q+A FAQs about the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Hazard Communications
ARTICLE CONTRIBUTED BY BRADY CORP.
GHS stands for Globally Harmonized System. The GHS is an international regulation that the United Nations (UN) has created for the Classification and Labeling of Hazardous Chemicals.
Q A
Why is GHS being implemented?
Without the GHS, countries around the world are left to determine their own standards for what chemicals are hazardous – and how to properly communicate those hazards. Each country handles this differently, which creates confusion and complexity for international manufacturers. The GHS is intended to create a single, universal format for hazard communication across the globe.
Q A
When was GHS implemented in the U.S.?
OSHA published an updated Hazard Communication standard in March, 2012. There is a three year transactional period to allow companies to fully implement the new HazCom standard in their facilities.
Q A
Where is GHS currently being implemented?
The European Union has already begun implementing many parts of the GHS

Communication regulation, CFR 1910.1200?
A
The GHS is applied within the current framework of OSHA’s existing hazard communication regulations. The GHS is not intended to replace OSHA’s standards, but instead update and add internationally harmonized compliance to its schematics. For example, OSHA is expected to require hazard pictograms/symbols to all of the chemical labeling.
Q A
Who is affected by the new GHS?
The GHS will affect chemical suppliers, manufacturers, end users, and testing laboratories. Any workplace that is currently subject to the Hazard Communication regulations is affected.
Q
What are the biggest changes that I need to know about?
A
There are 3 key changes that will be made during the implementation of the GHS:
regulation. Countries and regions around the world are beginning to implement it, each with their own individual timeline. Although it is an international standard, there is not one specific international implementation schedule. The GHS is a voluntary regulation set forth by the UN; each nation’s government is responsible for overseeing the regulatory changes and compliance.

standard 16-section format with specific information required for each section.
Q
Where can I access information on hazard statements and precautionary statements for the GHS labeling?
A
All of the elements of the GHS labeling system can be found and accessed in Annex 1-3 of the UN’s 3rd revised edition of the Globally Harmonized Standard for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, found on their website.
Q
Is there additional employee training needed for the GHS?
A
Yes, employees will need to be trained in order to recognize and understand the new labels, pictograms and SDS information. Employees need to learn how to interpret the pictograms and new hazard statements, and know what precautions must be taken for chemical products. The GHS is a bit more complex than the previous standards, and training is very important to ensure that the GHS is an added safety measure in the workplace.
Q A
What are the GHS labeling elements?
The standardized elements required for GHS labels are: Hazard Pictograms: There are nine pictograms in total that symbolize health, physical and environmental hazard information. The pictograms are black and white images outlined in a red diamond.
26
THE CIRCUIT SUMMER & FALL 2015
Signal Words: Either “Danger” or “Warning” is used to convey. the level of severity of the hazardous chemical. Hazard Statements: Assigned phrases in relation to hazard classes and hazard categories that detail the chemical’s hazards. Precautionary Statements: Detailed measures assigned to hazard statements given to minimize or prevent the adverse effects from physical, health, or environmental hazards.
Q A
What are the benefits of the GHS?
The GHS makes it easier for employers, employees and the public to understand the hazards of chemicals, and take the necessary preventive and protective measures for their safety and health. It also offers a number of benefits for our government, companies and general public. According to OSHA, here are the key benefits of GHS implementation: Enhance the protection of human health and the environment by providing an internationally comprehensible system. by providing an internationally comprehensible system, Provide a recognized framework to develop regulations for those countries without existing systems. Facilitate international trade in chemicals whose hazards
have been identified on an international basis. Reduce the need for testing and evaluation against multiple classification systems.
Q
How does GHS affect the labeling requirements for shipping containers or secondary storage containers?
A
The GHS requires proper labeling when shipping or storing chemicals. The labels should be on the individual chemicals, as well as on the outside of the larger boxes or drums that are used to ship or store the chemicals. Proper DOT labeling must also be present that corresponds correctly with the GHS labeled chemicals.
under Appendix C, 29CFR19101200?
A
Pictogram labels with adhesive backing on a label that are sufficiently wide to be clearly visible are acceptable.
Q A
From OSHA Brief 3696 Steps to Effective Hazard Communication, electronic copies are permitted, however you must have back-up system in event of power failure and/or equipment failure of the primary system. Employees must be trained on how to use system and obtain hard copies if needed. In medical emergency, hard copy SDS’s must be immediately available to emergency personnel.
Q
Q
A
A
We purchase preprinted labels with 4 blank diamonds. Can we black-out out the ones we don’t use? A blank diamond red frame set on point is not a pictogram and is not permissible under HCS2012. Black-out option is compliant but then red frame of the blank diamond must be fully covered.
Q
When is an employer required to replace their MSDS with revised SDSs?
A
Manufacturers, importers, and distributors should have started providing SDSs on June 1, 2015. All employers must have, maintain, and make available to employees the most recent MSDS or SDS received.
Q
Are pictogram labels with adhesive backing compliant
Are hard copies of SDSs required?
Would OSHA cite employers who only have an MSDS available? OSHA would not issue citations for maintenance of MSDSs when SDSs have not been received. As OSHA explained in a January 2013 letter, employers may, but are not required to, contact manufacturers or distributors of products they have previously ordered to request new SDS’s.
Q
What type of GHS label is required when moving chemicals from one facility to another?
A
The non-official response from the Dept. of Labor states that all containers moved from one facility to another (unless its immediately used by the person performing the transfer) must be labeled in
THE CIRCUIT SUMMER & FALL 2015
accordance with (f)(1) – full 6 label elements
Q
What GHS label do I need to put on the byproduct waste (hazardous) from the lab?
A
Hazardous Waste labeling is not covered by HCS2012. It’s covered by the EPA under the RCRA Act (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act)
Q
How can manufacturers of formulated (mixed) products comply by June 1st deadline if the upstream chemical manufacturers don’t supply SDS’s substantially before this deadline?
A
From the July, 2014 OSHA Letter of Interpretation, clarified on May 29, 2015, OSHA is not changing the timeline but will use discretion in enforcing the standard if reasonable diligence and good faith efforts have been pursued. This includes: Documenting efforts to obtain information from upstream suppliers, providing a written account of continued correspondence, Using alternative sources (e.g. chem databases) to find information, and attempting to classify the chemical yourself.
Q
What if a distributor cannot comply by Dec. 1 due to inability of the manufacturer to comply by June 1?
A
From OSHA’s clarification memo May 29, 2015, HCS2012 permits distributors to ship with HCS1994 labels until Dec 1, 2015 and if distributor cannot comply, a compliance officer must determine whether distributor has evidence it
exercised reasonable diligence and good faith to comply. This is handled on a case-bycase basis and distributors must present documentation of any and all communications with the manufacturer or importer regarding its reasons for noncompliance with HCS2012.
Q
Since GHS is a globally harmonized system, are my SDSs valid worldwide?
A
No, GHS is a voluntary international system that implements the framework for standardizing compliance regulations, such as converting MSDS’s to SDS’s . Countries like the US have the option to adopt and implement it freely. Only competent authorities such as EPA, OSHA and Health Canada, have the authority to decide which GHS building blocks to incorporate.
Q
We have small secondary containers that won’t fit the matching primary label, what do I do to comply?
A
For secondary containers, if it does not leave your facility, you can use a workplace label with the current HazCom 1994 labels, or use the chemical identifier (words, pictures, symbols) in combination with the other identification.
Q A
How do you address training of temporary workers?
Temporary staffing agencies and host employers share control over the employee, and are therefore jointly responsible for temp employee’s safety and health. It is essential that
27
both employers comply with all relevant OSHA requirements. The host employer and the temporary agency have to work together to ensure that temporary workers receive all required training.
Q
How long does a distributor need to hold on to a SDS after a product is discontinued and not stocked anymore?
A
Distributors are responsible for ensuring that their customers receive an SDS the first time a product is shipped and with the first shipment after the SDS is updated or changed. OSHA does not have any retention regulations for distributors for products they pass through to the end consumer.
Q
For a manufacturer, are there different labeling requirements for in process and final storage tanks as opposed to containers of our product?
A
Products falling within the scope of the GHS will carry the GHS label at the point where they are supplied to the workplace, and that label should be maintained on the supplied container in the workplace. The GHS label or label elements can also be used for workplace containers (e.g., storage tanks). However, OSHA allows a system of labeling that meets the requirements of HazCom 1994. The employer may continue to use this system in the workplace as long as this system, in conjunction with other information immediately available to the employees, provides the employees with the information on all of the health and physical hazards of the hazardous chemical.
28
THE CIRCUIT SUMMER & FALL 2015
Q
Does the new standard allow employees to use secondary containers without labels if the material is being used by the initial employee?
A
Yes, this has not changed. No labeling requirements if the material will be under the control of and used only by the person who transfers it from a labeled container and only within the work shift in which it is transferred.
Q
Are laboratories exempt from GHS labeling requirements?
A
No. The following regulations pertain to GHS
1910.1200(b)(3)(iv): Laboratory employers that ship hazardous chemicals are considered to be either a chemical manufacturer or a distributor under this rule, and thus must ensure that any containers of hazardous chemicals leaving the laboratory are labeled in accordance with paragraph (f) of this section, and that a safety data sheet is provided to distributors and other employers in accordance with paragraphs (g)(6) and (g)(7) of this section.
labeling requirements. 1910.1200(b)(3)(i): Employers shall ensure that labels on incoming containers of hazardous chemicals are not removed or defaced.
1910.1200(b)(3)(iii): Employers shall ensure that laboratory employees are provided information and training in accordance with paragraph (h) of this section, except for the location and availability of the written hazard communication program under paragraph (h)(2)(iii) of this section.

WAVEFORM CORRECTION
Environmental Potentials’ patented waveform correction technology
has revolutionized power quality for the past 15 years. Previously, power quality devices focused on protecting equipment from extreme events. Extreme events were defined as more than 20% above or below the peaks of the sine wave. These extreme events are created by events such as lightning, utility switching, transformer failure, and large faults. However, the proliferation of electronics, computers and digital equipment is creating pollution on the waveform which rarely, if ever, exceeds the 20% “envelope”. The processes of rectifying AC to DC, and inverting DC to AC, are responsible for generating 85% of power pollution. As seen in the illustration to the right, these signal manipulations leave the waveform full of pollution. This pollution equals losses, unreliable performance, decreased asset lifespans, malfunctions, increased maintenance, and downtime. Environmental Potentials patented waveform correction technology focuses on tracking the waveform and filtering all of the pollution generated by continuous power conversion. Environmental Potentials converts this pollution into heat within the unit rather than relying on ground, other system conductors, or even loads to provide the required attenuation. This eliminates harmful and unusable energy from your system. Installing EP ensures the waveform delivered to your high dollar business process assets is as sinusoidal as possible.

WAREHOUSING In a business where we have to truly understand how to create value for our customers that they can take to the bottom
line, I would like to announce an organizational change. Our
“warehouse” teams going forward will be referred to as “Shealy Logistics”.
In the past, our warehouse teams received, put away, pulled, packed and shipped the items we inventory. In those terms,
they were the “warehouse” team. They managed the items we warehoused. As we have expanded our value to the customer
beyond products and starting looking at movement of material on jobs sites and how we can reduce the customer’s cost, we
have provided solutions to manage the products on a job site.
That includes job boxes, job trailers, providing labor on the job sites, being responsible for moving material, special handling
instructions depending on the nature of the job sites, etc. We have started providing logistics support on job sites. In our
warehouses, we kit products, provide job storage, time delivery of material, mark and ship products in specific ways for the customer.
The definition of Logistics is “the management of materials
flow through an organization from raw material through to
finished goods” or “the detailed planning and organization of
any large complex operation”. The word originates from its use in the military and means “the art of moving, quartering and supplying troops”.
So if you think about what we do, we manage the material
through our organization from receiving the product through
the shipping of the product and sometimes all the way through its use by the customer. We are involved in complex processes customized for the customers such as replenishment of job boxes or on site inventory.
Today, it is not enough to just be good at what we have always
done. We have to find new ways to add value to our customers that they can clearly identify as the reasons they do business with us. We hope this is one of many that we have already done and will continue to do.

We were overwhelmed by the support of our vendors who made the fundraiser very successful and we look forward to working with many of them during the build. Our Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build will take place October 22-25 at our Charlotte branch. This year we are building a three bedroom home for Hinh Rahlan and Blem Rocham and their two young sons Nghiep, 9 and Ronald Lee, 5. They are refugees from Vietnam. This build will be Shealy Electrical’s fourth home with Habitat and; our second build in Charlotte. If you are interested in volunteering please visit http://bit.ly/Shealyhabitat2015. Our weekday volunteer shifts are two hours and our weekend shifts are four hours. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and must sign a waiver. No construction experience is necessary! Please contact Karen McLeod with any questions at kmcleod@shealyelectrical.com or 803-409-0123.
