The iPad's touch-screen keyboard isn't to everyone's taste, but if you can get used to it, the iPad allows for typing far faster than you might expect. Following are some tips to get you started. The best places to practice are in the iPad's "Notes" app or a draft email in the "Mail" app. Beginner Techniques 1. Use the On-Screen Keys The iPad enters a letter or symbol when you release your finger, not when you touch the screen. If you hold your finger on a particular letter or symbol, it will not appear on the screen. Â 2. Pop-Up Boxes Over Keys Many keys reveal useful alternative characters and symbols in the little pop-up box when you tap the key and continue to hold it. For example, tap and hold the letter "e" to reveal various versions of the letter with accents. Once the pop-up box has appeared, slide your finger to the character of your choice and release it from the screen. Keys with punctuation marks and symbols also reveal pop-up boxes. Â 3. Editing Text You can tap anywhere in your text to jump to that point. For more accuracy, tap, hold and then slide around to have a magnifying glass containing a cursor appear. Advanced Typing Tips 1. Quick Period and Space Most sentences end with a period and then an extra space. When you reach the end of a sentence, double-tap the space bar to add a full stop and a space. This happens quickly and now you're on to the next sentence! Â 2. Only One Touch at a Time A lot of iPad users seem to get "tap happy" when trying to type quickly. If you are typing with two thumbs or multiple fingers, only let one finger touch the screen at a time. If the first finger is still on the screen, the second tap won't be recognized. Â 3. Finger Placement in Landscape and Portrait Mode

When using the iPad in landscape mode, use your fingers on the keyboard just as you would a regular keyboard. However, for portrait mode, experiment with holding the iPad with both hands so that you can type with two thumbs. It feels a bit like a stretch at first, but actually works pretty well. Ă‚ So do you think you the art of typing on an iPad mastered? Do you ever wonder if your iPad typing skills are improving? You can actually find typing apps that will calculate your onscreen typing speed. One of the best apps for this is called TapTyping.
