The term transitional object was coined in 1951 by D.W. Winnicott as “a designation for any material to which an infant attributes a special value and by means of which the child is able to make the necessary shift from the earliest oral relationship with mother to genuine object-relationships.” Transitional objects are self-chosen — a child’s first “not-me possession” — like a blanket, teddy bear, pacifier, doll. The reliance on such objects is rooted in sensorial elements that lessen the stress of separation, while they soothe and comfort the child

Spaces The spaces are common for all to work. They have a very intense understanding of ergonomics and everything is in reach. Empathetic environment. Objects Joints and connections. The modularity of each object is really interesting.

From a chair to a table, the pin boards to monitors which are adjustable to heights and minute details that have been paid attention. My main focus was driven to the power plug units, the different ways of incorporating them. Having common space and working with different people at different times helps you interact with your environment and people.
Shefali Bohra | ENSAD | Design Objet | Transitional Object Project | 4 anne | 2017
The workspaces have been elaborately designed and modulated. There are multiple joineries and organisers. The adjustability of height and movement of boards helps oneself relate to the workspace hence providing user with a personalised workspace.
Material of the chair and things that go into the spine of the chair are an intriguing factor. The noble incorporation of the coffee stand in the chair (below) is an added asset.
The main part of any workspace is accessibility to utilities. These different kinds of plug ports for power supply were interesting to look at. The movement of the cover lid not only adds to the beauty of the product but also the functionality.ÂÂ

Interaction between different departments in different kind of workspaces
Steelcase incorporates different kinds of workspaces. The place tends to have an emmersive eco-system and introduces one to a creative space. A creative workspace of different types. Such as Focus studio, where one can sit in solitude and channelise their thoughts. A Duo studio, where two people can sit together and converse, discuss. High tech hubs for collaborative sessions. Places to socialise and develop rapid prototypes.

Colour and material plays an important role to create emotional connection with the space. It adds to the personalised feeling of a workspace
Circular economy as a tool. Steelcase also incorporates circular econmy and has tried to inbibe it in their practice of design. During shipment, traditional packaging didn’t provide enough support . Hence, they started using leftover melamine to create pallets for strengthened packaging.

Beauty + Sustainibilty Scraps to Beauty Material for these products has been adding sustainibilty to the workplace since there has been a constant use of scrap material for regeneration of new material.

Together they have created a system of combination of Analog and Digital products that allows the user to pick and choose. It relieves the user from any kinf of restriction and boundaries when it comes to expessing oneself. Disturbance / people’s constant movement/ footsteps/ people chatting/ people eating/ etc. They create time-consuming distractions. Office workers lose an average of 86 minutes per day due to distractions associated with open-plan offices. As a result, many employees are “unmotivated, unproductive, and overly stressed,” according to the study funded by Steelcase
They create vast political turmoil. In open-plan environments, there are always a handful of private offices for the bigwigs. Because everyone hates the open plan, the struggle over who gets a “real office” is cutthroat, creating unnecessary bad blood and wounded egos.
Problems in an open workspace They cost MORE than private offices. Here’s the real kicker. As I pointed out in a recent post on LinkedIn, open-plan offices are so incredibly destructive to productivity that they’re a net huge loss, even in areas where office space is pricey Sitting on a chair from 9-5 is a problem/ Sitting is lke smoking/ sofas/ chairs/ etc. are harmful if used constantly.

Sitting

Use an indicator. Should you find you are constantly being interrupted by coworkers, determining some sort of public signal that you are not to be interrupted might limit distractions. If you don’t have an office door to close, consider putting up a humorous sign or special figurine on top of your desk (both noticeable visuals) when you don’t want to be disturbed. Don’t even have a desk? A company called Luxafor makes a USB light that clips onto your laptop screen and changes colors to signal your availability.

White noise devices are available from numerous manufacturers in many forms, for a variety of different uses, including audio testing equipment, sound masking products, sleep-aid devices, and power-nap machines. Sleep-aid and nap-machine products may also produce other soothing sounds, such as music, rain, wind, highway traffic and ocean waves mixed with—or modulated by—white noise.

The aim is to create an object that signals the others of what your state of work is. It also aims at cutting down the disturbance due to noise, by producing sound for oneself. Objective
