M
arch in Michigan marks the transition from winter to spring, and this rough transition is essentially a labyrinth. Days in a given week range from 20 degrees filled with snow flurries that resemble a snow globe to 60 degrees filled with sunshine. This daily ambiguity on what to expect in the weather creates a realm where people have to be prepared for virtually anything: spring showers, winter storms, blustery winds, and more. The people of Ann Arbor are a prime example of successfully expecting the unexpected. Rain or shine, we show out in our best attire, whether it be through thick parkas and snowshoes or hoodies and sneakers. This Street Style issue exemplifies the best of Ann Arbor fashion throughout this fluctuation brought on by the seasonal shift.

I’ve always thought that gas stations, although often considered ugly, have some pretty interesting lighting and imagery that people don’t really pay attention to. Every time I walk into one I notice how versatile they are in terms of backgrounds, interest points, and lighting. I wanted to see if I could convey the more interesting and beautiful aspects of gas stations through a fashion photoshoot and portray them in a new way. About Me
H
anadi Zabalawi is a Palestinian-Jordanian fashion designer that creates couture and haute couture pieces, ready-to-wear looks, modest clothing, and modern fashion integrating traditional Arab folklore embroidery for all occasions from the finest fabrics. Hanadi’s passion for fashion design began in her childhood as she watched her strong and spirited mother sew clothing. As the only daughter amongst brothers, she gained strength and confidence from her mother, who became her role model. While growing up, her love for fashion continued to blossom as she helped her mother with small projects and learned from her techniques. Hanadi later studied Fashion Design at the Picasso School in Amman, Jordan. Years later, Hanadi has realized her dream to establish her own brand representing confident, modern, beautiful, and elegant couture fashion. Hanadi designed her brand logo as a symbol of her new beginning and fulfilling her life-long dream. Inspired by the sunrise, the emergence of bright rays glistens over the trees and cloaks the earth with warmth and sunshine. These rays stretch to every corner of the earth and are the beginning of realizing an unstoppable dream. Symbolically, the yellow topaz gemstone used in her first collection symbolizes the powerful energy of the sun. Her brand logo imagery extends to the very first piece Hanadi ever designed, “Sunshine.” The sunshine design in the yellow topaz gemstone color radiates from the “Sunshine” couture
dress, bringing full circle the symbolism and powerful energy that Hanadi brings to her fashion designs. Hanadi first designed pieces for her Gemstones Collection in 2019 but launched the collection at fashion shows in Amman, Jordan in 2021. She designed and launched, for the first time ever, her Bint al-Asl Collection at the sold-out Arab Xpressions 2022 event at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States in March 2022. Since then, Hanadi’s fashion has gained the admiration of followers because of her thoughtful and intricate designs, and her aim to make those wearing her designs feel confident, modern, beautiful, and elegant in their clothing. Mission The Hanadi Zabalawi brand stands for confidence, strength, beauty, and elegance. Her mission is for each person who dresses in our couture and haute couture pieces, ready-to-wear, modest clothing, and modern fashion integrating traditional Arab folklore embroidery, to feel their confidence, strength, beauty, and elegance accentuate their style, spirit, and fashion design. Through our Bint al-Asl Collection, our mission is to also preserve heritage and culture through modern fashion for future generations and for all ages. Our founder and designer, Hanadi Zabalawi, also has a personal mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusiveness for all women.
Gemstones Collection The Gemstones Collection features couture dresses and jumpsuits inspired by precious stones including lapis lazuli, rose quartz, yellow topaz, pearl, and black onyx. Each gemstone has a unique color and meaning. From the ancient days of Kings and Queens treasuring the lapis lazuli as a royal stone that offers protection, in this collection, Star Glamour and Sunshine were inspired by the lapis lazuli stone as these couture dresses are fit for a queen. The Flamingo and Flamingo Flair were inspired by the rose quartz also known as the “love stone.” It opens the heart and promotes unconditional self-love, infinite peace, confidence, and compassion for others. Cleopatra and Tina Turner were inspired by the yellow topaz, which symbolizes the powerful energy of the sun and is befitting of the power and energy of both Cleopatra and Tina Turner. A stone of sincerity and purity, the Swan and Peacock were inspired by the pearl which is befitting of these graceful birds. The pearl symbolizes purity, integrity, spirituality, wisdom, and femininity. Romantic Night is inspired by the black onyx, a stone that centers energy while aligning your inner strength and force. It encourages self-confidence, assertiveness, and healing in order to live in the present. Bint al-Asl Collection Bint al-Asl represents women being in touch with their roots and expressing their origin through their style and clothing. It demonstrates the power, strength, beauty, and elegance of women in everyday life. The Bint al-Asl Collection showcases modern fashion styles while integrating traditional Arab folk embroidery as an expression of Arab culture and heritage within modern clothing. Each of the modern couture dresses and jumpsuits in this collection features cross-stitch embroidered patterns and highquality, high-end fabrics and threads in vibrant colors. This modern, yet traditional collection, empowers women to express their origins and culture through fashion and brings a fresh look forward for future generations. Each of the couture dresses and gowns in this collection is named for Banat al-Asl. From daughters, mothers, and sisters to the royal family, there is a couture dress or jumpsuit for each Bint al-Asl in this special collection.

aparazzi Esque mocks the abundance of offguard images we are used to consuming of celebrities walking the streets. Household names are often treated like commodities as starving photographers fight for their picture. The concrete sidewalks of major cities have become runways for these influencers, and the whole world is watching. At the same time, the paparazzi subculture has made a space for celebrities to show their street fashion and has paved the way for street fashion overall. Paparazzi images have become an essential part of our media, admired by many who look at these pictures for street fashion inspo. Capturing paparazzi-like images has even become a trend among netizens, posting paparazzi inspired images to platforms like instagram, tiktok, etc. Paparazzi Esque is both a criticism as well as an admiration of this subculture. Paparazzi photographers are oftentimes toxic and harmful towards celebrities, but it is impossible to acknowledge the cultural impact and influence these images have had on us.

Paparazzi
Celebrities have dictated fashion trends for years now, and these trends have been brought to the phone screens of masses with the paparazzi following every move of Hollywood’s favorite stars. Princess Diana’s sophisticated athleisure and timeless looks influenced entire generations after she was photographed by paparazzi in her outfits in the 1980s. Caroline Bassette Kennedy’s 1990s paparazzi shots are still all over social media and inspiration boards today for her classy style. Today, paparazzi shots are so influential to a celebrity’s image that many of them call the paparazzi on themselves to be photographed for their best looks to go viral on the internet and to promote their brands. Though you may not have known the model in these images, you do now:– you see a fashion chameleon making the campus her own fashion playground.

Growing up, I have never felt good in my own skin. I followed all the trends, excelled in school, and did everything like my white counterparts. But I never escaped the “You are pretty for a black girl” comments. The truth was, I was never going to be good enough. It didn’t matter what I wore, or how I talked, or who I talked to, I would never compare. It wasn’t until I went to college that I realized the one I have to be “good enough” for was me. I was the one to convince, not my peers around me. While brainstorming for this photoshoot, I kept statements like “study hard because you will never get a man” and “Whites are supposed to see nappy hair” in the forefront of my mind. I wanted to create something that proved these crude stereotypes wrong. I wanted to capture pure black beauty. The essence of beautiful melanin. Because black is art. Black is strength. Black is elegant, and Black is beautiful. I wanted it to be known that black women are not to be disregarded. Black women, in my eyes, are equivalent to gold and should be treated as such. A quote by the late Maya Angelou also inspired my work. As the poem legend once said:
“You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise.”
