Today’s Forecast: 100% Chance of Winning

History repeats itself, and it is apparent in the realm of fashion more than ever. Everywhere around us, people are gathering inspiration from the 90s, revitalizing this era of fashion with a fresh, modern twist. From bold jewelry, claw clips, and baguette bags to corset tops, slip dresses, and animal print to tracksuits, windbreakers, and baggy jeans, 90’s fashion has delved full-force into the current fashion sphere! The next time you’re trying to expand your wardrobe or dress to impress this fall, try and take a trip back into the 90’s for your fashion inspiration. Fully embrace the nostalgia that comes from this fashion cycle through sustainable options like purchasing second-hand apparel or even wearing a parent or relative’s old clothes from this era. What better way to incorporate 90’s trends into your wardrobe than to wear pieces actually from the time period?

When I think of current fashion trends, my mind immediately goes to Dr. Martens. Although the company was founded in 1947, ~74 years ago, the trend has resurfaced in the past few years, especially among young people. Most of my friends, and even I, own at least one pair. My friend Janelle, pictured here, has four different pairs of Dr. Martens, a traditional pair of black boots, two pairs of the leather shoes, one in black and one in brown, and a white pair a blue pattern that she purchased on Depop. It is a versatile shoe that is comfortable while simultaneously stylish and edgy. Although Janelle is wearing the same outfit in all the pictures, her Dr. Martens change and add something different to each look.

I like to rock the skater type style. I feel like it fits me, even though I’ve never been able to ride a skateboard! Evan @evanssick

I’ve always folded my socks down like that since I was a youngin and I don’t really have a fashion icon, maybe my Dad a little.

Kareem El-Tawil @kareem.eltawil

My grandma got me this shirt for my birthday. I kinda thought it had an odd look at first, but now I wear it often.

Caitlin Hoyng

I got the shoes from my friend who dropped the airforce. The necklaces are from the PTO Ann Arbor thirft store. I like patterns and shiny jewelry. I was feeling like blues and greens today. It was just the color vibes of the day.

Alora Fleenary

I always like to play with a little bit of masculine fashion and also like to show either my middrift or my titties. Hannah Dodson

I wanted to wear layers because I can never decide the temperature here. I also feel like I haven’t worn this necklace in a while so I picked the outfit around that.

Marcus Byers @marcccussssss

When I first started expressing myself through fashion I really admired Rickey Thompson and Denzel Dion and their friendship and how they pieced things togther. I also always loved how their clothes were contemporary but with hints of old 90’s hip hop fashion while still staying up to date with the most couture trends. I just love how they merged those two things together.

Arianna @ariannalo.u

As gross as these shoes are, I really like them because I had to sew them up myself and they were like 5 bucks.

Kathy @kathyy_tran

Her boyfriend got her the tote bag :,)

Alyssa Sunew @alyssasunew

A lot of what I end up piecing together to make my best outifts are clothes that are thrifted. I love going to a local goodwill, salvation army or back home in Houston, Texas to a store called MAM. My style tends to be more cottage core, but based on my outift today I also really like the preppy look sometimes.

Haoyi Wen @why_musical0501

My outfit is from a Chinese website called Taobao. I think that their clothes are simple and I like the structure of them.

KARIS CLARK

“I

didn’t know if I’d get along well with this dude,” I thought when I first met Karis in a Zoom rush event at my fraternity. He seemed all over the place. He majored in Theatre Arts, and when I asked him how it was different from musical theatre he was wishy washy about it. The party school nature of University of Michigan desensitizes people’s social nerve: we are wired to not care about one of literally hundreds of new acquaintances we make in a semester. We are wired to judge people based on first impressions because that is the least timeconsuming way to navigate our social lives. Hasn’t everyone found during the pandemic that people are so much different in person than on zoom? The pandemic, the greatest common divisor and tragedy our generation has experienced, has proved the good old saying that you cannot judge a book by its cover, once more. Karis is dapper. Not the unbounded dapper that makes you feel intimidated and insecure by its idiosyncrasy or holier-thanthou vibe, but the kind that makes you feel that every person has his/ her own way to make this college town in the Midwest more beautiful. We are glad for our spontaneous collaboration that has optimized both of our wardrobes. Karis didn’t have a plan. Me neither. I’ve always had an obsession with fun patterns on a hoodie’s front left shoulder. Who knew Karis’ baggy checkered pants would match with my navy hoodie, as if the garments were two siblings who

had parted earlier in lives rediscovering their heritage. It was probably not the best idea to initiate a photoshoot on a Michigan game night. The storms of crowds were not conducive to a well-balanced composition, or Karis’ mental state. “Can we find somewhere else to shoot?” he asked. After Karis yielded to passing vehicles several times and boisterous drunk men kept catching my model off guard, Karis made an assertive and relatable request. I used to be afraid of walking on State Street on Friday night too, let alone participating in a photoshoot which would make me unhealthily self-aware. The overwhelming crowdedness and blasting music makes solitude look like a sin, although I knew shutting up and dancing

with them proved nothing, but was simply an overworked college student letting loose in the most unoriginal way. I am a stubborn person. And I think Karis thought he looked cute enough that night to continue the photoshoot on State Street in a confident manner. We then rambled across Ann Arbor until we became probably the most wholesome customer of a nearby liquor store: I got out with a bottle of chocolate milk and a bunch of photographs for a club project. One of the reasons I enjoy photography is the fact that it requires looking at ordinary lives through a unique lens, figuratively and literally. I love what it feels like to re-experience and reinterpret the same things I am going through every day through my camera. It reminds me of the movie Begin Again, where protagonists Dan and Gretta create music on the rooftop of an apartment building in New York. When the disgruntled tenants yell at them in New York accents, the band decides to continue and incorporate that shouting noise as part of their album.

“Maybe I am creating a photo album mixed with reality and poems in some way,” I told myself. I was recording the candid moments of an Ann Arbor Friday night. I was recording Karis’ talents and aesthetics, and also his fear and confidence. I was recording how checkered baggy pants are making their way back to this country entirely different from how skater boys in the 90s intended them. I was recording how chains and other accessories appeal to one of the most primitive longings for rare metal, tracing back to ancient times when people were fond of making necklaces out of stones. The Killers ask in their song, “Are we human or are we dancers?” Maybe we should be and have always been both.
