“how do we perceive scale in an architectural space?
One long standing approach is to view architecture from the perspective of human scale. Alain writes “one of the laws of architecture is to make scale perceptible”. How do we perceive scale in an architectural space? Architecture is almost always built for humans. This suggest that the human body can be taken as an absolute standard of measurement for describing spaces, as high or low, narrow or wide. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man is a classic example of this approach. In this first project, we had the opportunity to explore the relationship between space and matter. Our user is a petite girl, 150cm tall who loves to take photo. Driven by her perpetual passion of love for nature, we seek to create a pavilion that captures the magical, lively and ephemeral splendidness of nature.

“how can we make architecture akin to the nature? This is a retreat house proposal for a blind client. The site is set facing the beach front and backing a forest. Our living environment is compose of a mixture of the nature and the surrounding man made. The nature is beautifully simple yet diversely complex. On the other hand, architecture order is crudely robust, rigid and frail. How can we make architecture akin to the nature?
The house is placed at the end of the winding sunken journey through the forest. It is almost invisible as it is immerse amongst the trees. If you were walking through the path, you gradually sense the thinning of the forest before replacing by a beach front overlooking into the horizon.

“ The city is empower by the presence of people. How do we create spaces that enhance the sense of community

Portfolio | Tan H.L
This is my first building designed for the public. Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town located in Kuantan, Pahang. In 1880, the British set up a tin mining industry. The village developed rapidly from then onwards. In 1986, the underground mines were forced to close down due to collapse of world tin prices. Many lost their major source of income. Hence, majority of the younger generations had to relocate to the nearest city to seek for an alternative source of living. The older generations that choose to stay back considering their memories with the place had to sustain life through commercial and food business.
For the last decade, the town starts to see its new opportunity through tourism in their natural attraction and historical remnants. During my site visit, it wasn’t the natural attractions nor the historical remnants that attracts my attention. It was the journey of walking through a quaint village, a rare experience that can’t be obtained in the city. It felt as though the dying tin mine settlement are once again revived by their charm of a village. Imagine if all of the people of the village left for the city to seek for a better living, the village perhaps might not have had a second chance in surviving. People & Community

“how would one envisage architecture in a constructed cityscape The site is a rare urban threshold framed by the compact colonial build-ups surrounding central market. The condition inspires an opportunity for a subtle architectural intervention to envisage a physical and cultural re-connection between central market and the city.
The proposal frames a transitional platform to encourage cultural appreciation and progression through dialog and guided interpretation. The building extrusions are restrained along the edges of the triangular site whilst inclining towards the central basin to form an urban terrace that invites the pedestrian flows and frames the silhouette of the central market

A build form with vertical wall, floor, and roof as enclosure would disconnect the relationship of building and its surrounding. As oppose of the if the ground transform into the wall gradually, where the building would have a continuous gradation from ground to building, it would create a more approachable interaction between people & building
Blurring the lines between architecture and landscape by integrating the building with the central plaza. Thus intuitively carving out a sinuous ‘valley’ that softly channels pedestrian towards Central Market and the river.
Form frames the frontage of Central Market and access to riverfront thus creating a gateway

Wind Analysis
ENE wind blocked by adjacent shophouse
Evaporative cooling from river
In Malaysia, the prevailing wind predominantly comes from South and East-Northeast (ENE) direction. However, ENE prevailing wind are blocked by adjacent shoplot. Hence the site solely dependent on the south prevailing wind to dissipates heat and adds indoor thermal comfort. South West and West prevailing wind channels evaporative cooled air from the river to the site.
