PALIMPSEST As part of the RI-FORMARE MILANO, this project aims to tackle the issue of landscape fragmentation, social problems and the scarcity of the agricultural lands while respecting the historical permanencies by proposing solutions that are rooted in the social and territorial fabric. This project tends to focus on the regeneration of the Lambro River, with a key focus on the area pertaining Municipality 4, 4

specifically the area close to Ponte Lambro in the vicinity of Milano Linate Airport. Palimpsest, in its core meaning, is when something is reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form, while in landscape is used to describe a succession of layers, over time altering and adding to the landscape strata.
Considering landscape as heritage, we have analyzed the layers of history flowing along the Lambro River, and what we as landscape architects could superimpose on this linear stretch of the natural and manmade fabric. What lies as a stretch of the Lambro River is a bed full of strengths and opportunities, weaknesses and threats that we have tried to take advantage of and solve through
some nature based solutions by creating resilient spaces that could potentially improve the life of the inhabitants and the ecosystem but also serve as a model not only for the rest of Milan but also for other cities of the world.

CONCLUSION FROM ANALYSIS
STRENGTH
THE PRESENCE OF LAMBRO RIVER Lambro River runs through and across our site, giving the place the element of nature, beauty and of natural resources such as water, electricity and mechanical power through watermills, a diverse aquatic life (possibility of aqua - farming), a chance for water collection and irrigation of crops; AGRICULTURAL LAND WITH A HISTORICAL CHARACTER Exceptional natural and historical landscape around the site, with agricultural land that helps in the improvement of the food security for the people of that area;
PRESENCE AND ABUNDANCE OF CASCINAS AND WATERMILLS Historical buildings such as the cascinas and the watermills that still keep their historical features and values such as the appearance, materials, external structure etc;
NATURAL AND CULTURAL RICHNESS The area is enriched by natural elements such as the river Lambro, parks etc, but also by its cultural heritage such as the agricultural lands, the cascinas, religious buildings such as churches etc;
LARGE EQUIPPED PARKS / PUBLIC SPACES The abundance of green areas, specifically the parks are a natural feature that strengthen the area. They are open public spaces that are well equipped with landscape elements that favor the human factor as well;

WEAKNESS
URBAN SPRAWL Expansion of the urban built-up areas from the center towards all sides of Milan has brought up the loss of agricultural land and the ‘spreading’ degradation of the landscape, all leading to food insecurities and other health hazards;
LANDSCAPE FRAGMENTATION The lack of connections existing between natural elements caused by the urban sprawl causes fragmentation in the landscape;
ABANDONMENT OF RURAL MARGINALIZATION, URBAN DECAY
LANDSCAPE,
L AND
The rural landscape has been abandoned due to lack of maintenance of the landscape and also due to land marginalization and urban decay, not being able to use the land for their personal needs; INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION Due to the high number of industries and industrial buildings located in the east part of Milan, the pollution is visible everywhere causing a change in the ecosystem and a degradation in the landscape components; INCONVENIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM Soft transport infrastructures absence; Lack of integration among all transport kinds already present (pedestrian and cycling paths, roads and railway)
Ri-Formare Periferie,Milano Metropolitana
9
OPPORTUNITIES
DISCONNECTION BETWEEN URBAN AND PERI-URBAN AREAS Possibility to improve the connection between the urban and periurban areas, specifically the west with the east, and overcome barriers such as the highway through sustainable approaches;
ABANDONED AND DAMAGED CASCINAS AND WATERMILLS Possibility to re-qualify all buildings for social use, respectively the damaged and abandoned cascinas. Local tradition revival with an educational aim;
LINKING OF PUBLIC SPACES, PARKS, CASCINAS Possibility of linking the cascinas, public spaces and parks (green corridor) to enhance the social-cultural values of the landscape and increase sustainable tourism due to cultural and natural resources;
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND PLANS Projects such as Santa Giulia, Re-Lambro, Nuovo Parco Vittorini etc., are a great possibility of landscape regeneration, connection and of an increase in sustainable tourism;

THREATS
CLIMATE CHANGE / GLOBAL WARMING An increase in temperatures or a general climatic change affects the whole ecosystem, also causing urban heat islands;
NATURAL CATASTROPHES - FLOOD Global warming and the climate change often causes precipitation leading up to floods of the landscape, degrading it and damaging crops and other natural elements;
NATURAL CATASTROPHES - SOIL EROSION Due to climate change (floods, heavy rains and winds, etc) there is a damage caused to agricultural land by soil erosion
WATER POLLUTION Such natural catastrophes but also human factors (industries etc) cause a damage to the aquatic life by causing water pollution in different levels

2 SUSTAINABLE LIVING
QUATIERE PONTE LAMBRO The way we demolish our buildings and deteriorate our resources seem wasteful. We believe that the key to ‘Building a Circular Future’ is to make positive and economic viable business of reusing resources by bringing together the principles of design for disassembly and circular economy. Our vision for Ponte Lambro was in similar lines. We tried to intro fit various sustainable approaches with the existing built environment of Ponte Lambro and also extend this economy with the neighboring mixed used district of Santa Guilia. The interventions also include the proposal of Grey water recycling tower, with urban farming techniques in open areas, an adaptive reuse of Cascina Zerbone as pet and senior citizen care center along with new proposed riverfront zero waste restaurant that is built from recycled food packaging and that uses produce from the very own farms, composts all of its leftovers and rejects packaging from the supplier. It’s high time to rethink the way we live, the way we eat and the materials we use. With this proposal we are envisaging a future that will set an example to all the food outlets to reduce waste and to help regenerate our natural environment, making it livable for generations to come; a future that’s already here if we make the right choices.

3 REGEN VILLAGE
Totally self - sufficient, off - grid, tech - integrated residential real estate development The Regen Village demonstrates how architectural and engineering design can facilitate the journey towards a more circular industry. It is important that design seeks to innovate its approach, invest in developing advanced digital capabilities and continue collaborating. This proposal represents an optimized building practice with integrated closed loop economy, resource strategic approaches and life cycle design. It involves minimal use of land and natural resources and in return produce energy and resources like food, water, and electricity through sustainable means. The motive is to have the buildings be climate neutral, meaning their everyday operation will not emit greenhouse gases. And every growing tower will integrate a resource generation along with live-work concept.

4 ADAPTIVE REUSE & SUSTAINABLE FARMING
To counter the multitude of farm buildings which have fallen into disrepair due to being no longer useful, or too costly to maintain, we have proposed to re-use Cascina Boscana retaining its heritage with new functions like the vertical farm. And also propose functions that will reconnect people to their food and showcase the importance of an agricultural system based upon the interconnectedness of farming, living and landscapes, involving both the animals and people who are a part of them and to bring forth the dying values of having a sociable farm environment in order to encourage communication with natural and built environment.

02 Landscape in the Vineyard type : location:
Landscape Regeneration Cantine Ramangoli, Villo, Piacenza
date: 2020.02
The Val Nure is the valley of the Nure river, a tributary of the Po. The valley lies almost entirely in the Province of Piacenza and is part of the Colli Piacentini wine region located at the western end of Emilia-Romagna region. Moreover, the valley has ample historical remnant relating to trade, pilgrimage, defense system, industrial economy and railway system recorded at the present day
Another characteristic which captures our attention besides the historical value of the valley is the image of fog blanketing over the grapevines of Val Nure and the highlands. River valley fog formation is a common phenomenon along Po valley especially during the late summer and fall months, when the nights get longer, and temperature gets cooler. TOWER La Toretta SLOPE

03 Thawings No Man’s Land type : location:
Urban Regeneration Ponticelli, Napoli
date: 2020.07 website :
http://underthevolcano.eu/
THAWING NO MANS LAND “Thawing, in its core idea, is for us to try and make as little new as possible. Ponticelli as a district is a periphery, filled with the presence of absences where the feeling of being out of scale is unavoidable. The goal of the project is to make this periphery not a copy of, but an alternative to the center of the city, that means that both are very different and match different lifestyles, yet both have the same goal of ameliorating life for its citizens. A strategy has been used to activate and prioritize the existing patterns of citizen’s behavior and the development and 86
Portfolio | Tan H.L
enforcement of the potential of the existing urban morphology. Therefore, it consisted of a process of being very sensitive, soft and compromising, and moreover, very gradual and systematic no matter what the environment is. This led to a conceptual idea of having our design area divided into three parts: the tunnel, the courtyard, and the linear park along with the third landscape as one, where the user would, respectively, experience and learn, interact and socialize, and discover and appreciate the third landscape. Therefore, the language being
used in our design goes from rigidity to slowly being flexible through organic movements to completely being independent or plastic. The site is tucked between two distinct ends, the historical center on the west, and the Ponticelli future green strip on the east, and what binds these two and the three layers of the landscape is a journey directed by an organic and wriggly playful line and a linear park, where the user will find himself in an act of selfdiscovery. The start of the journey from the historical center is through the tunnel, with an emphasis
on education, learning and community sharing. Thereafter, you reach to an upper ground where you find yourself either at the start of the linear park or at the courtyard. Both are places of socializing, filled with play and leisure doing areas, that bring about a sense of community and happiness. Finally, you arrive at the end of this journey, welcomed by the third landscape, a beautifully carved piece of nature that has been left as a precious memory of the past.
Ri-Formare Periferie,Milano Metropolitana
87
THE TUNNEL The Tunnel is conceived as an unpredictable series of systems, in continual transformation, permanently reorganizing and rearranging itself through processes of rotation, expansion, retraction and closure, all the while maintaining a cohesive system. From the historical centre, one can enter the tunnel through the grand Plaza that extends the public life quality to the underground life of a closed art gallery followed by a series of open workshops, cafeteria, theatre spaces and performance area for the underprivileged and the citizens that will help reactivate the otherwise unused tunnel. The spaces are well lit due to the organization of volumes and open air gallery as can be seen in the detailed plans and sections. The axonometric view clearly explains the successive rhythm of spaces and flow of activities from the busy street of historic centre to the journey towards ponticelli strip.

This journey leads you to the linear park as well as connects to the wriggly landscape route which connects to other spaces of the project. The juxtapose of different textures for the display of street art with a backdrop of greenwall and a minimalist ramp hanging on a single support system further enhances the Tunnel.

THE COURTYARD The courtyard is conceived as the heart of the project. In the existing scenario this space was used as car park we envisioned it as an interactive People’s yard. On the street front intervention, we designed the ground floor as a welcoming space for citizens. The open to sky courtyard is converted into a skate park designed around various green areas. We have tried to adopt sustainable pavement methods and local materials, the permeability of which allows the earth to breathe as can be seen in the detailed plans and sections. We proposed sustainable materials as cladding on existing building facade/ for sun-shading purposes that will allow with time for plants to grow and acts like passive cooling façade for the indoor spaces. At the same time, we have considered some sustainable measures, such as wastewater/ and rainwater circulation system and selected some plants with better water retention performance. Thus this residential block is an attempt towards encouraging circular economy for a better urban life.

On the street front intervention, we designed the ground floor as a welcoming space for citizens. The stilt level of the residential area is converted into a series of playful recreational outdoor space for kids and senior citizens to spend quality time. The open to sky courtyard is converted into a skate park designed around various green areas that connects to the plaza which takes you to the car park or the tunnel.

In addition to the restoration of the original landscape, we also renovated the facade of the old residence in a minimalistic and sustainable way. We proposed sustainable materials as cladding on existing building facade/ for sun-shading purposes that will allow with time for plants to grow and acts like passive cooling faรงade for the indoor spaces.

THE LINEAR PARK The linear park is a connecting strip that acts like a backbone which links the whole journey. It is designed to cater different facilities like kids play area, food stalls along with various pavilions all contributing to the users and the life in that area. Apart from this the linear park functions as a water management system. Water can be collected from various parts of the site and get cleaned through bioswales located all along the park which then gets stored at the water treatment area underground. The park winds up as a spiral viewing platform overlooking the beauty of the third landscape, bringing in a sense of appreciation for the wild nature which is tucked in between the clutches of the human habitat. This culmination of the journey is conceived as the beginning to the fore coming designed ponticelli strip.

THE THIRD LANDSCAPE The third landscape is maintained in its original form, the vegetation with different heights and different colours maintains the biodiversity in its best form. We have proposed a cafĂŠ at the beginning of the strip to add value to the existing food manufacturer at our site. This end of the journey through our site is in one way a beginning to the future Ponticelli green strip from North to South.
