THE BENEFITS OF SELF-CARE There are so many of us taking care of other people and other things to a point we forget about ourselves. Being a wife at 14, becoming a mother at 15, I never really knew what self-care was. How could I when I was still a child myself. So now with me being 41 years old I’m just honestly beginning to TRULY understanding and practicing self-love. So many of us are now realizing and willing to accept this truth about themselves. On a day to day basis what is it that we all do, taking care of our responsibilities, being care takers of our kids, spouses/significant others, and sometimes our parents. We’re taught that if we only focus in ourselves, we are selfish. Where do we fit that self-care in? Most times NEVER, let’s just be honest. “It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself and to make happiness a priority. It’s Necessary.” Mandy Hale

your

I’ve learned that being selfish is not always a bad thing. I now know and understand it doesn’t mean I don’t love you less or you don’t matter because I’m taking a moment to take care of me. If I don’t take care of me, how can I take care of everything and everyone else. For me, self-care is just taking a small amount of time to love on me mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. What are some of the things you can do for self-care ? Meditate and go within Journal, Express yourself with no limitations Cry… yes I said it cry. Release Vocalize self-affirmations Take a bath, get you a Calgon moment Go for a walk and Reflect Get your hair/nails done Get a massage Date yourself There are so many other things you can do but the most important part is just doing it. Take time out for you and be perfectly ok doing so.

Meet: E'Tiana Larkin

Client Centered Consulting LLC

Contributing writer- E'Tiana Larkin

My woman-owned, black-owned business launched January 8, 2021, amid a global pandemic with the mission of helping one group of individuals, black business owners. Although I had been toying with the idea of starting a consulting business before COVID, I saw a great need due to the rise in individuals starting their own business while being quarantined. So, “my why?” includes sincerely wanting to see black-owned businesses doing well and prospering. Often, individuals jump into business just to have the title of business owner or entrepreneur but they don’t necessarily understand that there is a significant amount of work that goes into starting and maintaining a business. Sometimes approaches can be very rushed, skipping research on marketing, operations, and customer service. Some tend to think getting a logo, a social media page, and an LLC constitutes being a business owner and that’s all it takes but it takes so much more than that. I am here to assist with the “more” because I’m so tired of hearing “See, this is why I don’t support black-owned businesses”.

This is where Client-Centered Consulting (CCC) can assist with business owners pain point(s). Our mission is to help entrepreneurs overcome the challenges of setting up and building small businesses. In other words, we allow entrepreneurs to focus on their customers while we take care of the rest. Our services include: - Business Plans - Website Design - Logo Design - Business Strategy Calls - Business Mentoring - Social Media Templates - Customer Service Assistance - Business Building and Planning Packages

Being a business owner has allowed me to connect with so many awesome individuals. I offer free 15-minute consulting calls and even if the call doesn’t result in the use of my services, I am flattered the person thought enough of me to reach out and seek my assistance with their business. Also, during these interactions I get to learn about the potential client’s services, and I will refer others to their business who are seeking their good/service. Another success of CCC is the education I provide to individuals. I love talking with business owners about processes and systems that can help their business. I enjoy being able to provide advice that takes their business to the next level. I get excited when clients explain to me how the information I provided to them has pushed them to get started. I am very passionate about business which is why I received my bachelor's and master's both in business administration. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to pass on the information I learned to others. Obstacles I currently face include facing a major transition period in my life. In May, I uprooted my entire life and moved to Charlotte, NC. I am now tasked with meeting new people and working to create brand awareness in a location. Fortunately, there are Facebook groups specifically for small business owners that have been instrumental in helping me to connect with business owners that are in the area.

Social Media has also been another challenge. I don’t enjoy having to be online posting and engaging with customers every day. However, I understand that it is a huge part of growing a business and reaching a broader audience. I also understand that more than three billion people around the world use social media every month. Which makes it even more important when connecting with customers, increasing brand awareness, and boosting leads and sales. Eventually, I will outsource my social media but for now, I am working to stay current on updating my pages and using different platforms. Overall, my experience in business has been one of continuous improvement for sure. Daily, I continue to learn, grow, and push myself beyond my comfort zone. I knew going into business wasn’t going to be easy, especially a business where you are teaching business owners who may think they have it all figured out. But it has been rewarding when you get to see the wins or see the results of the client finally launch their business. Some of my future goals include, ultimately, having a team of individuals who assist with this work. If their vision aligns with mine, I know that many hands make the work light. Additionally, I would like to open a business center, where individuals could stop in and get assistance with their businesses, attend business-related workshops, use the space as a co-working space, or record for business promotional materials or podcasts. I want to be a resource for everything business, and I am committed to educating my community on all things business.

INTRO In 2019, I was working for RIT’s Gear Up Program, a college readiness program where I helped high school students in the Rochester City School District (RCSD) navigate their high school experience and form a post-secondary plan. As an RCSD graduate myself, I saw so many things in the field of education that I was not particularly proud of. It was then, I decided I wanted to have a bigger seat at the table in the field of education, so I applied to Canisius College’s online Master's program for Educational Leadership and Supervision.

Once accepted into the program, the difficult work began. I felt as if I had a learning curve because my background was not in education. Education was a second career for me. I struggled with acronyms and found myself researching terms on top of classes per semester, I was also working full-time, a mother of two teenagers, a radio host, and a partner. However, with all of this, I still managed to get all A’s for 3 semesters. Midway through the program, I was completely over it. I was not getting the support I needed from my field advisors and my passion for education was waning. This affected my grades and my work ethic. Toward the end of the program, I wind up failing 2 classes which were equivalent to flushing $4,000 down the toilet. I was at a point where I did not want to finish this degree because, in my last class, I would have to pay $2,000 out of pocket. After having a pep-talk with my now fiancé, he informed me that I would not get with him and become a quitter. So, I paid for the class and completed it with an A.

Administration, and in May of 2021, I completed my Master’s in Educational Leadership and Supervision. I thoroughly enjoy learning and being in the classroom and eventually, I do plan to obtain a doctorate. I was compelled to share my story because I was a teenage mother who had 2 kids by 21. I knew education would be the only way to change my situation. Therefore, I focused on building a life for my children and being someone they could be proud of. My advice to young people that I have worked with over the years has always been to invest in yourself and your future. Whether it’s learning a trade, going to college, or even going to the military, do something that your future self will love you for.

My name is Ann Jones. I am the owner of Body Beautifull apparel LLC. If you notice there are two LL in Beautifull because I am catering to the sexy thick girls and anyone who wants beautiful clothing. I currently hold my Associates in Fashion Design and Bachelors in Business Administration. Body Beautifull Apparel Exist for the sole purpose of creating a clothing line that's made of quality fabrics and great craftsmanship. I started this company because I am a full figured woman who was going to stores and not being able to find beautiful, trendy and fashionable clothing for myself. The fabrics were horrible and old fashioned. So I created a style that is slightly different from others. I do not want to shop in the same retail store where I have 50 percent of looking like another woman when you go out or even to church in the same outfit. I like to stand alone in my fashion and create garments for the woman who seeks the same thing. To be sexy but classy at the same time.

You can find me on all social media platforms FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok at Body Beautifull Apparel or my personal page Ann Brantley Jones. I can also be reached @ www.bodybeautifullapparel.com or go to bodybeautifull-apparel.myshopify.com
