NEXT Medical Group Office 15,000 Sq. Ft. | 7 Weeks | Fall 2017 | Steelcase NEXT Competition | Individual Project | Revit Described as preserving a “diverse mosaic of sub-alpine and alpine ecological communities” and ecosystems, Mount Rainier serves as a backdrop to the Seattle skyline, providing nourishment for the people, plants, and animals that inhabit the region. The peak boasts major titles within the natural world; Mt. Rainier is the highest volcanic peak in the contiguous United States, contains the largest alpine glacial system outside of Alaska, serves as the origin for five watersheds that drain into the Puget Sound, is home to thousands of plant and animal species, and, as a park, is designated as 97% wilderness. In the way that Mt. Rainier causes species and ecosystems to converge, the NEXT Medical Group, located in Seattle, Washington, provides its patients and employees with an environment in which to thrive together. Through the designation of five spatial zones that symbolize the different “ecosystems” within the space, the NEXT office empowers the user to choose how and where they want to work, putting employees and patients in control to create a space that promotes increased happiness and confidence and encourages mutual participation. The work café symbolizes the “peak,” providing nourishment to its users and opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles and, ultimately, a healthy workplace.

Social Media Satellite Office for Yik Yak 4,200 Sq. Ft. | 3.5 Weeks | Fall 2016 | Individual Project | Revit Yik Yak is a company that wholeheartedly embraces both individuality & commonality among individuals, encouraging users to be themselves & find their “herd.” In the way that a herd functions as a family, so do Yik Yak’s users & employees. The Yik Yak interface serves as a means of connecting individuals whom might not otherwise cross paths, even when within a five-mile radius, & connects individuals through anonymity. The themes of connectedness, locality, & building community are integral to Yik Yak’s values as a company & drive the needs & purpose of this space. By fostering a comfortable, communal, & collaborative environment, this office aims to facilitate better connections & relationships amongst its employees. Marked by fun breakout spaces, individual work zones, and “communities” of workstations, the office offers a variety of different work settings, focusing on comfort, degrees of enclosure, & user choice, encouraging workers to define how they work.
WHO IS YIK YAK? Yik Yak’s mission is to make the world feel small again. Its founders, Tyler and Brooks, wanted to create a way for people to instantly connect with everyone around them, and so Yik Yak was born. What started on one campus has now grown to over 2,000 campuses across the US and is expanding internationally. Yik Yak is a location-based social network that prides itself on being “hyperlocal” and helps you connect with the people around you, linking you to people within a five-mile radius of your location. By letting you share news, ask questions, offer support, and interact freely with others who are in the same place at the same time, Yik Yak acts as a springboard for discovering, meeting, and connecting with people in your local community. Yik Yak helps you find your herd.
"THINK TANK" SAY HELLO TO DEREK. His favorite thing about working at Yik Yak is the fun atmosphere and the employee perks. He loves the collaboration that occurs in the “think tank” & its close proximity to the kitchen, where employees enjoy free snacks & coffee all day.

Building on three key principles that Yik Yak’s platform embraces, the office is structured to support a range of activities and purposes. Community: Yik Yak’s theme of community is reinforced through the main breakout and ideation spaces, which foster meaningful connections among people, whether it be through socializing, sharing ideas, or just hanging out. Locality: With the goal to connect people that are geographically close to one another, “Locality” sets the foundation for Yik Yak’s community. By grouping desks into “communities” that house people from various fields of expertise, employees are exposed to a range of ideas and are able to learn from one another, as well be a part of a smaller community within the Yik Yak family. Individuality: Yik Yak embraces individuality and teaches us to appreciate our differences, while also acknowledging how much we have in common with the people around us. Individual work spaces allow employees to choose how and where they work. Social Media Office 17
PRIVATE BOOTHS SAY HELLO TO JUSTIN. Justin is especially inspired by how companies brand themselves, and Yik Yak is no exception. This is his favorite spot for focused, heads-down work and to observe Yik Yak’s brand in action in this vibrant popart mural.
SAY HELLO TO BEN. When he isn’t hard at work, you might catch Ben in an intense game of ping-pong. He embodies what it truly means to work at Yik Yak: grind hard, put the herd first, and have fun in the meantime. His favorite spot in the office is the conference room because the table doubles as a pingpong table.

SWITCH Galleries + Apartment 6,000 Sq. Ft. | 6 Weeks | Fall 2017 | Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library Competition | Individual Project | Revit Inspired by the ideas of an architectural “switch,” a device that modulates and articulates movement and is itself transformed through movement, visual artist Sarah Oppenheimer experiments with materiality and the unconventional manipulation of standard materials. She challenges the way we perceive space, scale, imperfection, and deconstruction, driven by genuine curiosity and a passion for interior intervention. By encouraging Oppenheimer’s same sense of curiosity and interaction with art, Switch Galleries - located in the “Rust Belt” city of Troy, NY - gives guests a unique gallery experience, unveiling the shear possibilities of architecture - not only of the building and its spaces, but also of its microtechnologies, such as rotating glass panels and walls, or architectural elements such as doors, screens, ramps, or columns. By creating a dialog between the building and the art, and again between the art and museum-goers, Switch facilitates a conversation about the ability of architecture to encourage movement and creates a free flow of energy and feedback between the space and its users.
RECEPTION A custom ceiling element is used to create movement and draw the user back towards the first-floor exhibit space, a concept that is reinforced by the intentional use of yellow throughout the building. Utilizing a “charged” palette of electric yellow, contrasted with black, white, & gray, the palette responds to the energy & intervention encouraged by the idea of a “switch.”

LIVING ROOM Bridging the comforts of home with the aesthetic of an upscale New York City loft, the apartment seamlessly incorporates aspects of the lively gallery spaces. Utilizing the same materials, color scheme, and repetition of architectural elements, namingly the “canopy feature (represented here by a black wall and ceiling wrapped in warm wood and echoed in both the first & second floors), the space brings familiarity, while also offering a certain level of flexibility.

Grab bars in each bathroom aid in maintaining balance and preventing falls.
To comply with universal design standards, both bathrooms provide a 60-inch turning radius for wheelchair accessibility.
Slip-resistant tiles reduce the risk of falling, promote universal design, and allow for “aging in place. Sinks with clear-knee access and lever-handle faucets allow for ease of use and accessibility.
Both bathrooms feature roll-in showers (able to be used by someone in a wheelchair), equipped with seats, grab bars, and hand-held showerheads.
KITCHEN Inspired by the minimal and transformative nature of Oppenheimer’s pieces, the furniture throughout the gallery and apartment reflects mid-century modern style and custom millwork in the apartment can be converted to support different tasks, all while complying with universal design standards. An adaptable coffee table from Duffy London quickly transforms from living to dining in a matter of seconds. SWITCH Galleries + Apartment 27
Los Angeles Native American Tribal Library 13,000 Sq. Ft. | 4 Weeks | Spring 2017 | Collaboration with Jessie Bean | Revit Inspired by Native Americans and their interdependence on the land and with nature, this space emulates the natural forms of the Southwestern United States, where the largest population of Native Americans resides. By incorporating principles of biophilic design and mimicking the fluidity and movement of naturally-formed canyons shaped by wind and water, we focused on connecting modern Native American culture back to their roots within nature. Custom installations throughout the library convey our concept by creating movement within the space. These features implement the use of textures and layering and evoke senses of refuge, prospect, and wonder within users. Through our design decisions, we return visitors to a native place, while simultaneously meeting the needs of modern-day libraries and tribes.
1. Custom Workstation: This piece was designed to emulate the curves and layering that occur in naturally-formed canyons. It meets both standard and ADA requirements for both height and accessibility. 2. Mezzanine: The curvilinear form of the mezzanine mimics the fluidity and sweeping gestures of canyon walls and creates an interesting aesthetic experience. 3. Ceiling Feature: A custom layered ceiling feature frames the central seating areas and makes an otherwise cavernous space more intimate. 4. “Kids’ Cave:” Evoking the same sense of shelter and refuge while incorporating a fun and playful element, this space encourages the use of technology and offers individual reading nooks. 5. Prospect: Inspired by the “14 Patterns of Biophilic Design,” the mezzanine level offers two moments of prospect and reflection to observe the features and activities occurring below. These locations are destination points within the library and serve as landmarks within the space to aid in wayfinding. 6. Relaxation Booths: Located near one of the locations of prospect, individual booth seating evokes a feeling of shelter for users. Deep shades of purple aid to the calming environment.

WORK + SOCIAL SPACES The hallmark of the space is a sculptural ceiling feature that can be viewed from below and above (from the mezzanine). It serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, aiding in acoustical control within the main social and collaboration space.

"KIDS' CAVE"
RELAXATION BOOTHS The library provides a variety of spaces ideal for any user. Whether you are reading a book, working on a group project, or need tutoring help, there is a space to support your needs. Personal relaxation booths allow users to have privacy and room to spread out, while also providing prospect and a panoramic view of library activity below.
The ability to host large community events was a top priority in designing this tribal library. A large community meeting room provides flexibility in layout to accommodate a range of events, from forums and town hall meetings, to receptions and social events, to celebrations and displays of Native American culture.
