MT. RAINIER, SEATTLE
Described as preserving a “diverse mosaic of subalpine and alpine ecological communities” and ecosystems, Mount Rainier serves as a backdrop to the Seattle skyline, providing nourishment for the people, plants, and animals that inhabit the region. The peak boasts major titles within the natural world; Mt. Rainier is the highest volcanic peak in the contiguous United States, contains the largest alpine glacial system outside of Alaska, serves as the origin for five watersheds that drain into the Puget Sound, is home to thousands of plant and animal species, and, as a park, it is designated as 97% wilderness. In the way that Mt. Rainier causes species and ecosystems to converge, the NEXT Medical Group, located in Seattle, Washington, provides its patients and employs with an environment in which to thrive together. Utilizing Steelcase’s research on the “Resilient Workplace” and the ecosystem of spaces that drive it, the office balances palettes of posture, presence, and privacy to ensure comfort amongst all guests and employees, regardless of age, gender, or ability. Through the designation of five spatial zones - nomadic, resident, resource, meeting, and social zones - that are evenly dispersed throughout the space, the NEXT office empowers the user to choose how and where they want to work, putting employees and patients in control to create a space that promotes increased happiness and confidence and encourages mutual participation. The workcafé symbolizes the “peak,” providing nourishment to its users and opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles and, ultimately, a healthy workplace. A ceiling feature that connects high-energy and high-collaboration spaces throughout the office further emphasizes underlying connections between the spaces and the individuals that inhabit them, visually linking the different "ecosystems" within the space and aiding in wayfinding. The color palette is derived from the natural colors of Mount Rainier's landscape, which consists of mountain peaks, glaciers, forests, water sources, and vast wildflower valleys.

RECEPTION & WAITING AREA
A bright, open reception and waiting area instantly welcomes patients into the NEXT Medical Office. Optional iPad check-in is intended to cater to those who prefer a quick, digital interface over face-to-face interaction. The reception desk is adjacent to the resource center, allowing ease of access for employees to reach printers and necessary supplies. While waiting, patients can choose to sit in comfortable lounge seating, get work on mobile laptop tables, or pass the time in the Patient Education Center, attached to the waiting area. This zone consists of rentable health, wellness, fitness, and self-help books and videos, allowing guests to immediately implement a healing regime, if necessary. Giving patients comfortable options and more ways to feel comfortable while waiting aims to abandon the intimidating doctor’s office of the past and boost patient and employee well-being, office efficiency, and overall satisfaction.

The material palette is derived from the natural colors of Mount Rainier’s landscape, which boasts a range of ecosystems and environments, including mountain peaks, glaciers, forests, water sources, and vast wildflower valleys. Earthy hues of blue, green, and gray, accented by soft yellows and pinks aim to bring the outside in and, when paired with wood accents, achieve a nature-inspired atmosphere that Mount Rainier so effortlessly provides. Each of the materials selected was chosen to be low-impact to the environment, further reiterating this space’s commitment to health, wellbeing, and sustainability. Below are some of the material considerations that went into selecting these materials:

Additional seating for family support active participation, making them a part of the conversation. Whiteboards allow for quick & easy notetaking.
TYPICAL PATIENT ROOM
The Steelcase Pocket mobile worksurface supports connected care, from task to task and space to space. It moves with clinicians to bring people, tools and technology together. It can be used for charting, for video conferencing with medical specialists, & more.
The Steelcase Via wall system allows for future flexibility in the office (conversion of consult rooms to exam rooms as more space is needed, and vice versa) and provides the integration of technology and writable surfaces throughout the workplace. Paired with the Condeco Connect screen, booking rooms or viewing appointments is within a single touch.
The Steelcase Empath recliner is specifically designed to reduce stress & minimize the possibility of injury for patients & clinicians in healthcare settings. Empath brings clinicians eye-to-eye with patients to encourage communication, teaching and learning. With both essential and advanced features, it adapts to a wide range of uses in patient rooms, exam spaces, and more. The Steelcase Folio collection allows for great flexibility in the medical office, providing adequate storage for supplies and making exam spaces more efficient.

BEHIND THE DESIGN The custom ceiling feature, designed over the areas of “highest convergence,” represents the underlying connections between organisms within an ecosystem. These connections, while they cannot be physically seen, are integral to the functioning of an ecosystem and if a link is broken or removed, it can have adverse effects on the rest of the ecosystem. These areas of “convergence” occur in the reception (patient to patient), the staff education zone (doctor to doctor), and the workcafé (patient to doctor). The ceiling feature serves as a visual representation of these underlying relationships, in addition to serving functional purposes in controlling noise over these zones of increased interaction.

The Steelcase NEXT prompt outlined two major requests: provide a range of work settings to accommodate varying work preferences and to encourage movement throughout the day and integrate technology throughout the design to accommodate meetings, focused work, and virtual communication, as well as create spaces for parttime, full-time, and mobile workers. These factors truly drove the design of the space and finding Steelcase products that met these needs was easy, as their products are designed for flexibility and the future. These are just a few of the products that were integral to achieving these goals:
NEXT GOES DIGITAL The NEXT Medical Group prides themselves on patient satisfaction and making their services widely accessible to people of all ages. They want the patient’s experience to reach far beyond their appointment and continue even after they walk out the door. By developing an application that manages appointments, patient history and information, office events, and a wealth of medical knowledge and lifestyle tips, patients - especially millennials - are able to build a real relationship with their doctor and with the NEXT community. Through the mobile app, patients will be able to view available appointments and schedule them, receive online chat support with a doctor for minor ailments, view their patient history and billing information, educate themselves with the medical database depending on their injury or diagnosis, find recipes and healthy living tips, and check out upcoming community events, fitness classes, and health seminars happening in the NEXT office and the surrounding Seattle area. With “NEXT Step,” NEXT puts medical care and support in your pocket and allows you to decide your “next” step.
Take the NEXT step.
