Supporting a Healthy Lifestyle Cancer is a word no one wants to hear when it involves his or her health or a loved one. Cancer seems to be affecting more and more individuals every year. The American Cancer Society stated that there were 1,660,290 reported cases of cancer nationwide in 2013 and 27,080 cases in Alabama alone, excluding basal and squamous cell skin cancers and situ carcinomas excluding bladder cancer. What is cancer? The National Institute of Health defines cancer as,“a term used for diseases in which

abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.” It is so important to keep one’s body in good health to promote the best health possible for each individual. Unfortunately, some cancers are genetic. Genetic cancers imply that no matter how hard an individual tries to prevent a certain cancer from occurring, their body is at a higher risk of developing these imperfect cells due to their genetic make up. General ways to prevent cancer include staying away from things known to cause cancer, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, and being watchful for precancerous
conditions that may arise. Carcinogens are always present in our environment, but it’s our responsibility to limit our exposure to these harmful factors. Carcinogens are known to cause cancer by making our cells divide quicker, which can lead to possible changes in our DNA. These harmful factors may be excessive exposure to pollution, ultra violet light, radiation, chemicals found in our work place or home environment, things we eat and drink, or bad habits we have like using tobacco. Our health and bodies are always a work in progress. Supporting a healthy life style is a great place to start when aiming for a cancer free life. Start by keeping a healthy weight, eating a diet full of fruits and vegetables
and limiting processed food items, maintaining a healthy mental state, and get annual screenings for common cancers like breast, prostate, skin, and colon cancers. Basic medical physicals are also needed yearly to ensure the body’s functioning at it’s maximum potential. All of these are essential lifestyle modifications are in most individuals direct control and can not only prevent cancer but improve one’s quality of life. The Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the creation of its Educator of the Year recognition program. Educators play a vital role in the lives of Shelby County children, impact our communities every day and help develop the workforce which our Shelby County businesses and organizations will need in the years ahead. As such, the Chamber is launching this recognition program to celebrate excellence in the teaching profession and inform our community of the exceptional quality of instruction delivered throughout Shelby County. All nominees will
be recognized and two recipients (elementary and secondary educator) will receive a one-time financial investment to assist their continuing development. Also, the Chamber is pleased to announce the creation of its Student of the Year recognition program. Shelby County students are our potential business and community leaders and will comprise a significant portion of our workforce in the future.
As such, the Chamber is launching this recognition program to celebrate student excellence in the classroom throughout Shelby County. All nominees will be recognized and two recipients (college track and career track student) will receive a one-time financial investment to assist their continuing development. The Chamber will recognize all nominations and announce the recipients at the April 30 membership
luncheon which is sponsored by America’s First Federal Credit Union. All Students and Educators must be nominated by their principal. Greater Shelby Chamber Announces Green Business Designee The Greater Shelby Chamber recently launched the Green Business Program and is excited to congratulate David Schlueter of Buck Creek Stained Glass on being approved as a Designated Green Business. The Chamber’s Existing Business & Industry Work Group reviewed the applicant and collectively approved this company at the January meeting. The Green Business application is based on a point system in the categories
of Waste Prevention, Recycling, Purchasing, Energy, Conservation, Transportation, Water Conservation, and Pollution. Each applicant has to receive a minimum of 20 points total to be designated. The purpose of this
program is to recognize Shelby County businesses that are committed and engaged in environmentally responsible operations and practices, also known as ‘green’ business practices. If your company is engaged in green practices and

Congratulations to Jimese Harkley for achieving Ambassador of the Month. Jimese is the Community Relations Liaison for America’s First Federal Credit Union. America’s First is a full-service financial institution that is committed to supporting the community and serving local schools and organizations. The credit union conducts financial education workshops and provides products and services to help improve their members’ financial lives. Jimese was born and raised in Birmingham. She is a graduate of Jacksonville State University and a current student at Birmingham School of Law. Jimese was a 2013 Birmingham’s Finest Honoree for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Alabama Chapter. Small Business Week Salute — Save The Date! The Chamber’s 2014 Small Business Week Salute sponsored by Regions Bank will be held during the week of June 23-26. Last year’s event saluted the impact which small business has on Shelby County’s economy and recognized 21 nominees for our inaugural Small Business Person of the Year in three categories. The
Chamber’s Small Business Work Group has been working on making this year’s event even more worthwhile and beneficial. Nomination packets for “Small Business of the
Year” in several categories — based upon size of the company — will be available soon. We encourage any Small Business to consider participating in this worthwhile opportunity. All Small Business of the Year nominees will be recognized at a reception in their honor on June 23, as well as at the Chamber’s Small Business
